My wife and I share one computer, 2 user accounts. My pc is connected via line out to my stereo installation, music plays all the time when I'm at home. In Windows 7 when switching users, the music kept playing (foobar2000), but in Windows 8 it stops (mutes). This is annoying because my wife often logs on to check mail, etc..
View 2 RepliesOn the screen where you choose which user account to log in to, I've noticed the user avatars/icons are sorted in "last used" order. This is extremely annoying because it forces you to actively look at the icons instead of just alway clicking on the same place on the screen. (Compare it to if the digits buttons on your cellphone switched places e.g putting the 0 first. Confusing.)
How can I prevent this, ie to have the avatars in a fixed position always?
If iTunes is launched with User A account, when I switch to user B account on the same machine, iTunes music is stopped and I would like music continue...like in Windows 7....
Is it possible to indicate to iTunes to not be suspended when user switch and continue to play music in background ?
using windows 8 and I don't know if this a common problem but I like listening to YouTube in the background when I'm doing stuff in the foreground. However whenever I go and minimize Google Chrome it mutes that window

In windows 8, it appears that we have one option to switch from a user to another which is "sign out". The "sign out" will be closing all the application open.
I'm wondering if there is an option in the windows 8 such that one can switch from a user to another but to keep applications open.
The user account is automatically logged off from my PC Windows 8 though the antivirus program is still running. Thus, I have to reenter the password to check the program running status. How to prevent user account to be automatically logged off in windows 8? I have already selected Never in the option of Put the computer to sleep.

I have Windows 8 home with IE 10. I want to DISABLE selective browser history deletion (open history, right-click-delete certain websites). I don't have gpedit.msc but I believe it falls under the "Prevent User from deleting websites visited" or something along those lines. I found a registry key edit "CleanHistory" and I have changed the value back and forth from 0 and 1 but it still hasn't stopped me from being able to selectively delete. I found the registry key on multiple websites so I imagine it's supposed to work but it just isn't. User error, perhaps?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI created a new user account on my PC (running Win 8.1), and the mute button on my wireless keyboard does not work on the new account. Pressing the mute button causes "Mute" or "Unmute" to appear on the screen briefly, but the sound does not mute or un-mute. The volume up and down buttons work, and if I log into my old user account the mute button still works there. It only doesn't work in the new account.
View 1 Replies View RelatedF4.I really disliked the fact that a slip of the hand that results in me pressing F4 means closing a window, so I went to BIOS mode and added the prefix of 'Fn +.' So I pressed F4 to try it out and it performed the exact same function. So naturally I tried pressing Fn + F4 and it did the same thing. I'm pretty irked that F4 = Fn + F4.
So the question of the day is: how do I prevent F4 from closing my window? I don't want to disable it completely because I want to attach another hotkey to it (ex: F4 = go back one song for a music player.) If I wanted to do that, I would've used Sharpkeys.
I like to watch videos on my left monitor while using windows 8 apps on my second. The only problem is that as soon as I interact with the monitor I'm watching the video on the app on my other monitor closes and it goes right to the desktop.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI run this copy of Windows 8 Professional in a virtual machine and every time I leave that VM for just a couple of minutes the OS starts using up an enormous amount of HDD that significantly slows down my host machine. It turns out that Windows 8 begins what they call "Scheduled scan" when there's no user input:

and as soon I switch back to the VM with Windows 8 the HDD "hogging" stops. Obviously this is very annoying!
In light of this, I'd like to ask how to stop this background scanning?
PS. I tried going to the Action Center and schedule maintenance for 3AM or something remote but that doesn't seem to have any effect.
Windows 8. When the monitor turns off on my laptop, it locks the computer and when i wake it i have to enter the password again, i wish to disable this option not to be have to enter password every time i wake the laptop.
I searched a solution and the closest thing i saw is "require a password when waking the computer" the problem is if i disable this option there is no password even when waking from hibernation/sleep.
I wish to keep password protection when returning from hibernation/sleep but not when the monitor just turns off. Is it possible?
Regularly, when using keyboard shortcuts a Keyboard Shortcuts panel appears automatically. I can't find a way to close the panel out.
The only way I can close it is to shut the computer down.
Is there a way to open the panel, manually, if needed, and then close it?
If not, is there a way to prevent the panel from appearing at all?
Edit: The panel is displayed every time I use a keyboard shortcut.
Solved: To make the panel hide, press Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Right-cursor-key.
How do I ensure that nobody can slip in a Windows 7 or 8 disc and reinstall windows on my laptop? I have a BIOS password, but in the boot priority order it doesn't list my disc drive as an option.. Only "Windows Boot Manager"... So I'm unsure as to whether someone can just stick a disc in and reinstall windows.
Reason being is that I had my laptop stolen two months ago. I had tracking software on it (Prey), but the theif never connected to the internet, which is required for the software to work. Which leads me to assume that they just formatted (my win 7) laptop and reinstalled windows straight away. So I'm learning from my mistakes, and wanting to do it right for my new laptop.
I wonder if there is a way to prevent tiles from dragging on the start screen? Hard to believe MS left this out! I often drag or swipe across the start screen and move a tile wo/ intending to. This happens often on the touch screen of my Samsung slate. Not sure if it happens as easily with a mouse.

Meaning, the below trick, does nothing and Windows still installs drivers for several devices after you uninstall them and restart:

my HP laptop keeps turning itself off. It doesn't shut down, just turns off. It isn't running out of charge according to the thing(cant think of what to call it) that shows me how much charge it has left, the charger does have to be plugged in for it to turn on again. It also doesn't seem to be overheating. No warning messages or anything.
When I load back it up again it takes a lot longer than usual, it's not updating.
For a bit more annoyance when it does load up Google Chrome wont start until I restart.
Not so bad if it breaks now as the warranty only has a few months left.
Yesterday while I was sleeping, a thunder struck nearby my house while my PC was running. After that I immediately switched the PSU from 1 to 0 without trying to shut it down properly. Since then I cannot shut down my PC without switching off the PSU. To tell you exactly what happens, I press the shutdown button in Windows 8.1 normally, after that it shuts down for around half a second, turns back on for half a second and then again turns off for half a second. After that it powers back on. I forgot to mention that my integrated network card on the motherboard died after the lightning as well. My MOBO has some kind of electrostatic discharge protection as well. Last thing, when I booted up my PC for the first time after I turned it off by switching off the PSU, it said "Setting thing up for you" like I started Windows for the first time.

Today I thought I'd set a picture for my user account.
Nothing happens when I click or double click on the user account icon in the control panel.
I then went to check if our other pc was the same but that's fine.
I did notice that on mine instead of an icon of two people the icon is that of a folder.
I have tried accessing it through "Godmode" and it says it can't find it and also all the icons for user tasks are a blank piece of paper.
Windows 8 seems to detect my Xbox 360 and it automatically installs the SmartGlass app. While I quite like what SmartGlass can do, I have no need for it. If I uninstall it, it will just auto-install again next time I use my 360. How can I prevent this from happening?

My power settings say, while on battery, dim the display at 2min, turn off the monitor at 5min and put the computer to sleep after 15 minutes.
Is there a way to instruct Windows 8 that at the 5min mark, when it turns off my display to conserve power that I can avoid it going to the lock screen and then requiring my password? So, just turn off the display, but don't lock the computer?
I still would like the lock screen image to display if I hit WindowsKey+L. And I still want my computer to lock after it's been asleep (past the 15 minute mark), so the group policy stuff to "Do not display the lock screen" will not accomplish what I want.
I was wondering, am I able to use the Applocker to prevent this from occurring? I can sadly not give a screeny of this... because if the message appears, there seems to be no way to get rid of it, but making a new local account?

It "fixed" only when I reinstall the language that I cannot switch into or when I re-log into windows.

I don't do a lot of heavy gaming but I do play Minecraft. I looked at the specs of that laptop, it was Core i5 processor at 1.8/2.7 GHz 4gb ram and nvidia GeForce graphics card dedicated with 2gb. Will these specs be enough to run Minecraft without any lag? Also, why did it say 1.8/2.7 GHz? Which one is it?
I have a SSD and tried to switch to AHCI without having to reinstall. A guide suggested i had to do to device managers and then select my IDE items, select manually install driver and install the driver for AHCI
Well now i can't boot windows 8 anymore. I get an error message before the loading is finished, and i don't even have the time to read it my computer will instantly reboot and do the same thing over and over again
Setting the BIOS to AHCI will just cause another error. Windows8 won't boot and will tell me i need to repair it.
Automatic repair from install CD isn't useful. I don't have any system restore point.
