View 1 RepliesI'm not exactly sure when this problem cropped up since I don't use it often, but when I type "cmd" in Modern UI and right-click on the program, choose Run as administrator, I'm dropped to the desktop and nothing happens. This also happens if I list programs installed through the Modern UI and right-click on Command Prompt.
However, if I go to windows/system32 and right click CMD and choose Run as administrator in Desktop mode it works fine. I also installed Stardock's Start8 to return the classic start menu and when I type cmd there and choose Run as admin it works fine, or if I right-click the Start button and choose Run cmd as admin (not exact wording) it works fine. The Run as admin problem only seems to affect the Modern UI mode.
How this can be fixed? It's not that there aren't workarounds, it's just I prefer things to work as they're suppose to. I've checked my user credentials as well as the UAC settings and everything looks fine. How to fix this short of "re-install Windows".
As far I know all MS windows 8.1 updates are installed, but the problem is I don't get the context menu when I right click any tiles in Metro. So I can't remove or re-size anything. When I right click it only give me check mark in right side the box.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Win 8.1 on a Yoga 2 Pro convertible laptop with a 3200 x 1800 res screen. Although my DPI scaling is set to 250%, the Modern UI tiles and text (Start screen) are still too small. In addition, many of the apps show text that is too small, as well.
This Eightforums article showed a terrific registry hack to adjust this in Windows 8. Unfortunately, the article warns that it does not work in Windows 8.1.
Any way to increase the text size of the Modern UI? As it is right now, it's unusable.
I just had a user come in with a problem with IE on her desktop so I thought I would see if the Modern UI browser would have the same problem. When I went to her Start/Tile screen, all she had was the white tile with the blue "E" which took me back to her desktop IE. Could not find the blue tile with the white "E" which on my Windows 8 is my Metro/Modern UI browser. Is there a way to put back the Modern UI IE? I went under all applications and it wasn't there either. Why would it be obliterated from her system in the first place?
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust installed Windows 8.1. Both my monitors have a resolution of 1920 X 1080. Both have DPI set accordingly. My right hand monitor is fine, my left is fine when running the desktop and desktop apps. However, whenever I run an app on the second screen, it seems to be larger than normal (zoomed in). I think this is a DPI issue, and Ive tried tweaking the registry but to no avail. I have all the latest drivers. The start menu only displays 4 rows, yet when i move the resolution down to around 1600, it shows 5 rows.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWindows update has been really messing with my pc lately. I ran update and when it installed the updates my integrated mouse ended up not working. I rolled back update and installed the updates one by one and the one I ended up not installing was the camera codec pack. Now the problem I am having is that my touchscreen won't work. If I talk to HP support they do the most basic thing they can and then when they can't fix it they tell me that I have to ship it to them because hardware is broken.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat would cause my windows 8 PC when i restart it to log into modern interface like it suppose to but then immediately drop to the desktop once loaded there?.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThere are some times when I close a ModernUI app using a method that may not be common, in this case, the Windows Task Manager.
So I would load a ModernUI app, for example... PC Settings. I would then load the Windows Task Manager (the built-in one, not a third-part task manager such as Process Explorer by SysInternals). I would then find the program's task and then right-click on it and choose "End task". The full-screen window disappears as you would expect it to disappear but here's where the bug shows, the icon for PC Settings still stays in the Task Bar. I have to hover over the icon with my mouse, let Aero Peek appear, and then click the X button there to have the icon disappear from the Task Bar.
This also happens when I close an app when the app is windowed using ModernMix.
Sometimes I have to close an app this way because it locked up. I mentioned PC Settings because this seems to be an app that leaves its icon behind on the Task Bar when you force close the task in Task Manager.
This doesn't always happen, it seems that at random this bug will happen. It's like the taskbar isn't informed of the closure of the ModernUI app.
I was wondering if it was possible to run the Metro/ Modern UI apps on the dektop screen in a window? It seems the new office does this and I really liked it. I find it extremely annoying using a fullscreen app on a 24" screen on my desktop PC.
The new Windows literally kills windows. I don't get why they would do this to desktop users.
I'm on Windows 8.1 and I can't find this (metro/modern UI settings). Had made all of it pink at some point in the past, and don't use it much. Now I want to change it to a different colour because I plan to use it.
I open "Computer Settings" from the "charm bar", and for people making videos about it on Youtube, they have "Personalize" as the first option you see.
I can't find it. Clicking on Personalization inside the Modern UI opens up the regular Control Panel which doesn't have the modern bits in it.
When I do manage to open Personalization, it has only avatar, desktop and lock screen.
Just to clarify what I mean, I want to change the colour that's cerise/pink in the picture below.
I installed an update this morning (the little action center flag in the bottom corner of the desktop told me to), after which my start screen displays nothing except the background, whenever I search for anything it says "This app can't be searched". Nothing relating to the start screen can open, so I pressed 'Windows + r' to get myself to desktop. I can open IE in desktop but can't view in start. System Restore failed and no matter how many times I try it will not work. When I look through Control Panel at the recently installed updates I can't find the one I installed this morning. next step is to do a system refresh - but there's a catch.
I can swipe in to bring up the charms bar (that's what it's called, right?), and I then click on settings. At the bottom i select "Change PC Settings", but along with every other part of Modern UI, nothing happens. As far as I know, from this menu that I cannot open is the only possible way to do a system refresh/reset, thus I am stuck with an inoperable operating system.
When i try to play a video from SBS On Demand or Tenplay I get the message the video failed to play retry and when i do retry that message appears again, note but i have tried those apps on nvidia cards and they work perfectly.

For most of the apps, you cant delete them by generic methods, unlocker has to be used.
xbox video and xbox music apps are not getting updated (frozen in "pending state" all night long).

This is a simple executable shortcut that you can pin to the taskbar or use on the desktop to enter the Start Screen, the only reason I made this is for use with Tihiy's StartIsBack as he enabled the Right Win Key to enter the Modern UI Start Screen instead of the Desktop Start Menu, unfortunately I don't have a Right Windows key so this seemed like a good solution instead of having to use the Charms Bar.
It is just one line of code that I made with Autoit and I added a Windows 8 logo Icon
Send("{RWIN}")
Also I would just like to mention that I did not come up with this idea, there was already one very similar but it was set for the left Win key and that was useless for me, original mod can be found here [URL]
t's very simple, in a Metro app, move your mouse on the top of the screen to show the title bar, then move your mouse quickly to the bottom of your screen, and BAM

Is it possible to install Metro or Modern apps offline? If so what is the best method?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to make it so Windows 8.1 does not show any of the Modern Apps in the taskbar?
For instance, I like to keep NotePad8, Weather and some others running, but I don't want them taking up Taskbar realestate since (as far as I'm aware at least), those Modern apps will remain open until I close them for good by moving to the upper left part of the screen.
I suspect there's probably something I could do in the registry, and if there is, maybe someone could attach a .reg file for me.
I'm also attaching a screencap of what I'm talking about.
Skype-Modern App
Ok, I'm using the Modern Skype app and I want to change my picture.
So I click on my user pic and I am taken to My Pictures folder.
But I don't wanna be there, so I "Go Up" to the Users Folder and click/open Play. But I do not see App Data listed.
What I would like to do is browse to this specific folder without leaving the Modern Skype app.
c:UsersPlayAppDataRoamingSkypePictures
Why? Because that is where the picture I wish to use is located. I am well aware that I could drop out of the Modern interface and copy/move the file from there to the My Pictures folder.
Is there a way to disable tab restore in the immersive version of IE 11 on win 8.1 spring update?
I always end up with many open tabs from past sessions and it gets harder to find the right tab.
Alternatively, is there a way to "close tabs on exit" ?
I want to delete the app cache in my Modern UI apps. How is this done? I've tried clearing the store cache but I don't think that's the same thing.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to 8.1 earlier this evening and was greeted by an extremely unpleasant error in that all of my Metro apps have now become non-functional, including the Windows Store and the PC Settings apps.
I have spent the last 2 hours trying numerous solutions to the issue, none of which work. The only remaining option seems to be to try "refreshing" my Laptop, but this is not an option as I do not own any Windows 8.1 Installation media. I used the $15 Windows 7 to Windows 8 upgrade offer a few years back, so I don't even have an original Windows 8 CD.
I also really cannot download an ISO as I am currently on satellite internet, it took me nearly two days to download the 8.1 update so I would rather avoid doing that if possible.
I've checked my file permissions, I've tried all of the Powershell commands suggested here and here, none of it has worked. When I attempt to do the powershell commands I get the following error:
Code: Add-AppxPackage : Deployment failed with HRESULT: 0x80073CFE, The package repository is corrupted.error -1121: Windows cannot process a deployment operation because the package repository database encountered anESENT error. Use the Reset Your PC feature to recover your PC.
[Code] .....
There has to be some way to fix this without formatting/refreshing.
I'm using Windows 8.1 and it's modern internet browser (which opens in full screen etc etc), just because it's fast (I tested it, faster than anything else) and looks great. My problem is not THAT big, but if there is an solution I'd like to hear it.
How can I pin this modern browser to my desktop, or taskbar (down there y'know) as a shortcut?
I've been reading some threads that say
- it CANNOT be done,
other threads that say:
- IT CAN be done with some Registry Editing or something,
and some say
- it CAN be done with Metro App link (I tested it, great app but won't include Explorer)
Is it possible to do it with regedit? And if so, I'd like to know how and what is the exact path to create a shortcut (I'm not THAT good with reg editing)
In Windows 8.1, Modern UI app processes continue to run after I've closed the actual apps. I don't know if this behavior is intentional or not, nor do I know of any way to prevent it. I know in Windows 8.0, just about all apps stopped their processes after you close them. So why the persistence now in Windows 8.1? Caching/speed improvement? Is this unique to my system or is there a setting that can stop this behavior? I'd test part of this myself, except I don't currently have access to my other systems at home.

On my Dell Latitude 10, when viewing HTML5 YouTube videos in full screen on IE10 in Modern mode, I can't bring up the playback or screen size controls. Tapping the screen shows the title of the video and the share and info icons, but nothing else. I can pinch to zoom the video, and can drag it around a little and see the actual page for the video underneath, but I haven't found a way to actually close full screen mode. When I switch to the Flash version of YouTube everything works as expected, i.e. tapping the screen brings up the controls at the bottom of the video.
A co-worker has a Surface Pro, but I haven't seen how YouTube behaves on that yet to see if it's a problem specific to the Latitude.
I have an older Dell laptop with no secure boot that has Windows 8.1. I shrank the partition and installed Linux for a dual boot setup. Normally I install the GRUB2 to the root of the Linux partition so I don't "see" the Linux installation at all until I use easybcd to create a boot menu item. Easybcd wipes out the pretty blue GUI boot screen and you end up with the black and white "legacy" menu. This was all expected.
Now the weird part. Sometimes when I boot the computer I get the black and white boot screen and sometimes I get the modern GUI boot screen. I prefer the black and white boot screen because the modern boot screen does a second reboot when you select a linux installation.
My friend recently bought a Windows 8 (Pro) Tablet and I suggested that she should use skydrive, but there are two unexpected behaviours:
1)On the Mordern UI I try to access files saved in the skydrive, but this only works with an internet connection.Without I only got an error/warning message that I need a connection. Why there are no data sored offline? This is a no go!How can I change this?
2)On the Desktop I don't found the folder where to store the skydrive data.I think this is a problem in connection with no (1).
Is there an app or a way to move/create shortcut tiles on Start screen for Wireless section for Modern UI settings. I just bought TF810 (YUPI!!!) and would love to have quick access to those parts of the system (sort of as in WP 7.x/8).
Battery level shown on tile/start screen (it is only shown in detail on task bar) would also be useful. I keep searching for it but no luck so far ....
I have 3 user accounts.
1. Administrator
2. initial user
3. new user
So the initial user is the one you are forced to create when first setting up Windows 8.1. It's a local user meaning that I set it up without signing into a MSA.
In both the Administrator and the initial user, all the WinRT apps/tiles work. Like the weather will show up and everything.
Whether I change the Initial User to Standard or Administrator, everything still works fine. Of course, the Administrator can't open WinRT apps which is standard and normal. And the initial user can't use apps without signing into MSA. But it all still works perfectly fine.
The problem is with the new user. The new user is meant to be in Administrator mode because it's my main account. But whether I set it up as Standard or Administrator, it's the same thing. None of my WinRT apps work.
Even when I sign into my MSA with the new user, it's still the same thing. It synchronizes to my OneDrive online. It recognizes that I'm completely signed in online. Yet it's still the exact same thing with the WinRT apps. None of them work. Even when I try to open up the Windows Store. It just continues to try to open, but doesn't go all the way through. So whether I'm signed into my MSA for the third user or not, it still gives the same problem.
I ran Windows Update, and it worked perfectly. Everything is up to date.
I wanted to know if is it possible to switch between modern ui (as it is by default) and desktop apps, all in the same left pane in Windows 8.1?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI offten play game online, and my network is not fast. So when I playing game, it's usually "lag". I think it is because the modern apps (mail, people, weather...) and other background services auto connect to internet. I can stop or turn off these background services, but I don't know how to turn off or prevent modern apps do that to improve the network speed.
