Maintenance :: Ubuntu Windows 8 Dual Boot Performance?

Jun 27, 2013

I decided to dual boot ubuntu 13.04 with Windows 8. I had a dual boot setup before with Windows 7 and didn't have any problems.

Since this latest dual boot Ubuntu has been running fine however Windows 8 has become really sluggish. It now takes a few minutes to boot when before it was able to boot within sceconds. Once opening a program it crashes and freezes up the entire system, basically making windows unuasable.

There were no problems with windows 8 prior to the dual boot so I am not 100% sure why this is happening.

I backed my system up before install ubuntu so I can easily get everything back if I have to formate everything.

Setup Installation :: Dual Boot Windows 8 And Ubuntu On Laptop

Aug 25, 2013

I have been researching installing Ubuntu alongside Win 8.on my daughters laptop. I already boot Ubuntu & Win 7 on my desktop pc, but I have read some horror stories about installing Ubuntu with Win 8., mostly in regard to the uefi boot system in Win 8., as well as, its a laptop as opposed to desktop.

I have been told that i must enter the bios first and disable secure boot. Most of the tutorials I have read are very complex. Then i read a tutorial from this website, dated 2011 that appeared to be simple, and similar to my own Ubuntu/Win 7 installation, however it was dated 2011.

Dual Boot Windows 8 And Ubuntu : Windows 8 Guides

The only difference with my intended installation is that I will use a dvd as my Pc does not have a USB Boot option.

Setup Installation :: DUAL BOOT With Ubuntu 12.10 - Windows 8 Not Booting

Sep 13, 2013

I have a big problem since 9/9 and I just can`t fix it.

I have a dual boot system and use Windows 8 as my main OS and on the other ssd I have ubuntu 12.10 installed.

My issue started because I completely forgot that I had ubuntu installed on the other ssd (didn`t use it anyway) and tried to raid the ssd...so now I can`t boot anything and I do need to restore my Windows 8.

I have a usb recovery disk which allows me to use cmd but I don`t know how to use to recover my Windows 8 so that`s why I am here.

I ran diskpart on cmd it it shows both disks and both are ONLINE.

Ran chkdsk /f but i keep getting an error and chkdsk does not run

I have asus P8Z77-V LX UEFI Mobo
Intel rapid Smart technology (RST), Intel Smart Connect Technoly is disabled.
CSM is ENABLED ( it was AUTO) and boot device control to UEFI and LEGACY OpROM.

Secure Boot is disabled and I changed the OS type to OTHER OS and also tried WINDOWS UEFI MODE. The setup mode is EZ MODE.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Dual Boot Ubuntu 12.10 On 2 SSD Drives?

I currently have a machine installed with Windows 8 pro 64 bit installed on one Samsung 840 pro SSD. Works great. I recently added a second Crucial m4 SSD and would like to install Linux on it... I am having major issues doing so mainly because of UEFI... and when installing Linux it does not see Windows 8 installed on any drive therefore making it rather difficult to install both OSes.

Setup Installation :: Dual Boot Win7 And 8.1 - SysPrep With UEFI GPT

Jun 27, 2014

1st partition is Win7 SysPrep and the 2nd partition is Windows 8.1 Sysprep. I install Win7 and press Ctrl-Shift-F3 to form SysPrep, same as Windows 8.1 in 2nd partition. I made this becuase I've 25 Dell new Windows 8.1 Computer which are UEFI. I want to clone it to the other 24 Dell computers.

CASE 1 : 2 different partitions with 2 different Windows :
---------------------------------------------------------------
If I install both Windows like above, when Sysprep Generalize Win7, it works fine. But if I SysPrep Generalize Windows 8.1, it's fine also, but never can boot again back to Win7. The start boot option is like this :
Windows 7
Windows 8.1
If I choose to boot Windows 8.1, it's fine. If I choose to boot Windows 7, it ever boot to Windows 8.1. It means nomatter I choose to boot which Windows, it all goes to Windows 8.1 ?

CASE 2 : 1 partition for Win7 + Win81.VHD :
---------------------------------------------------------------
I install Win7 (C and press Ctrl-Shift-F3 to form SysPrep.
I create a Win81.VHD in Drive D: , imagex Windows 8.1 install.wim in it. Also press Ctrl-Shift-F3 to form SysPrep.
Sysprep Generalize Win7 is OK , SysPrep Generalize Windows 8.1 is also OK. But after that I can only boot to Windows 7 fine, when choose to boot Windows 8.1 , it always restart and back to the boot menu ?

Bare Metal Restore Of 8.1 In UEFI Secure Boot Mode

Dec 20, 2013

I built a new PC running 8.1, GPT, UEFI secure boot mode, everything. I'm now at the point where I'm ready to start migrating my data to it, but before I do that, I need to get some backup software that offers me the option to boot from a recovery CD and restore from an image file backup stored elsewhere. Until I've wiped this install & restored successfully, I don't consider it a usable machine. I already have this setup working on my Win7, but for some reason that software is not working with 8.1.

So I'm looking around for something new, and I'm on a trial of Paragon Backup and Recovery Home 12. It says I can create a WinPE disk (and I must use this, since I'm using Intel firmware-based RAID) that will allow me to do a bare-metal restore. The takes me to a link on their website for something called the "Paragon Boot Media Builder." And there's documentation on it, but I can't find out how to download it. If I Google downloading that, a bunch of pirate websites show up & not much else.

Setup Installation :: Samsung Won't Boot Install USB In UEFI Mode?

Apr 2, 2014

So I've searched, and I've tested, and now I'm about to turn my laptop into a frisbee and never buy a Samsung PC again. In short, I bought an ATIV 7 whose previous owner had downgraded to Win7. I wanted to put Win 8 on and I have a volume license as well as the OEM key so I burned the ISO (actually 2 different ones) using every method I could find (ImgBurn, Rufus, Iso2Disc, Win7 Download tool, etc.) It became clear that the USB needed to be formatted FAT32 with GPT filesystem, however in UEFI mode it shows the USB but won't allow me to select it - it just flashes. If I set it back to CSM and UEFI I can make a USB boot, but even if I use diskpart to clean the drive and convert to GPT it will fail to install because it detects I didn't boot in UEFI mode.

Here's the deal. When I'd installed it earlier this week in CSM and MBR mode, and then converted to UEFI it worked fine. So....I tested several recovery programs we use at work to make sure they'd restore it okay via bootable media. Paragon, Aomei, Macrium, Lazesoft - all boot media failed. ONLY True Image 2014 DOES ACTUALLY BOOT in UEFI mode on my laptop. The only thing I can figure is that the way WinPE 5 or 5.1 (whatever it uses) is set up on it agrees with my laptop. So how I can modify the Acronis recovery media or create similar WinPE media that might actually boot on my laptop.

I'm not even sure how to check what kind of ASUS my laptop is, but I'm fairly certain it is compatible with Ubuntu. If I can, I'd like to avoid using external hard-drives and CD's because I don't have easy access to either.

Can Turn Windows 8 Installation For UEFI Into BIOS CSM Mode

May 31, 2013

On my computer there is a pre-installed Windows 8 which works fine for UEFI boot (Secure boot not necessary).

Now when I switch in UEFI setup at boot time the UEFI mode into the CSM (BIOS) mode and restart then Windows 8 is not starting any more.

As far as I find out an UEFI-based Windows 8 can only boot with UEFI mode enabled.

So my question is: Can I turn an existing UEFI based Windows 8 installation into an CSM/BIOS based installation (=a Win8 which boots successfully even when I enable CSM in UEFI setup) ?

If yes: How do I do that?

Cannot Install Windows 8 In UEFI Or Normal BIOS Mode

Jun 2, 2014

I cannot install windows 8 in BIOS or UEFI mode.

it's getting boot and install only in EFI mode. after trying to reinstall it won't allow me to select the disk partition, as it gave me the error "

Windows 8 cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks." i tried all the given solutions on GOogle. even i cannot recover or refresh using windows 8 environment. many times it gives me BSOD. cannot vonvert to MBR as it says it cannot be done on virtual HDD.

tried many things nothing works, need to install windows 8 after every 1 or 2weeks, many a times my BCD data gets corrupt, and windows wont start. Also tried many things to repair this, but only thing that works is reinstalling windows 8.
That gpt or MBR error was solved by selecting UEFI:CD drive. in boot options by pressing F12 after inserting the disk.

Setup Installation :: Windows Boot Manager - Deleted UEFI Boot Option?

Mar 24, 2014

After creating a UEFI bootable USB thumb drive with Rufus (using Windows 8.1 Enterprise ISO x64), for a Dell Optiplex 3010 (configured as UEFI only, no CSM, latest firmware version, Windows 8 installed), I didn't see a USB boot option, so I tried to add one manually. Unfortunately I erased the existing boot option (boot manager) by mistake. Although there were two boot options for PXE booting, the machine will not start anymore, even when there is an active WDS server on the network.

I also see Led's 2 and 3 lighting up, meaning according to the manual 'hardware ok but bios possibly damaged/corrupt'.

I understand I cannot start the machine from a bios boot disk because of GPT partitioning, and the UEFI USB boot disk I made might be corrupt (as it didn't show up as a boot option), however I don't understand why it won't boot from the PXE network card, as these boot options are still there.

ASUS K75DE Windows 8 And 7 Dual Boot - Boot Options Grayed Out In BIOS

Dec 15, 2013

I just got a refurbished ASUS K75DE laptop, and it came with Windows 8 on it. I am wanting to run a dual boot with Win7, so I disabled fast-boot just fine, and went into the UEFI BIOS and disabled the secure boot.

While I was there, I did like I have always done and set a BIOS boot-up password. I then proceed to boot to my Win7 installer USB Flash drive, but I was running low on battery power so I aborted the install and shut the computer down to try again later.

Now however when I get into BIOS to select boot priority, all options are grayed out except for system time and a few other non-essentials. At the bottom of the first BIOS screen it says "User Level : User" and I can't seem to find a way to reverse this issue. So now I'm stuck, can't boot to anything but the HDD because it is first by default.

Setup Installation :: How To Install In UEFI Mode With Bootable DVD

Sep 15, 2014

I have original ISO file from MSDN website - it is Windows 8.1 Update 1 Enterprise (x64) MSDN version with Slovak language interface. I create a bootable DVD (Verbatim DVD-R 4,7GB) in program ISO2Disc. This ISO I would like to install on to my system , more details about my pc - see my system specification. My motherboard is MSI Z77 Mpower with latest version UEFI - BIOS 17.12

I have a few question about installation a new windows 8.1 in uefi mode:

-what a bootable media is better ? I think USB stick or DVD disc
-what the function in the BIOS I must turn on or off, I mean the fast boot or memory fast boot
-UEFI mode is better then LEGACY mode ?

I have a bootable DVD Parted Magic , it is good Partition Manager. I must change MBR format to GPT - only GPT is supported format for UEFI , is it rue ? So , now i should format all disc inside my pc (secure erase for ssd disc and wipe for hhd). I can create NTFS partition with GPT format and aligned to 1204MB for all solid state discs and HDD. I can do this ?

Setup Installation :: Recover Legacy Boot And Remove Old Entries From UEFI Boot

Aug 21, 2013

First, some context: I have a Dell Inspiron 15R SE that came with Windows 8.

I've managed to get a working dual-boot system with Ubuntu 12.10. I can't remember exactly how I done that, but I remember that I had to disable secure boot. I think that the boot configuration those days was:

Secure boot: DisabledLoad legacy option rom: EnabledBoot list option: Legacy

This "configuration" worked perfectly for 6-7 months.

Then, one day (last week, can't remember the exact day), when I was using Windows 8 the computer crashed. I hard-rebooted and got this screen:

After executed boot-repair from a Ubuntu LiveCD dozens of times I've decided to eliminate Ubuntu temporarily and focus to get a system with Windows 8 working nice.

Then I used my recovery DVDs to recover the system. Yup, Windows has booted. But when I restarted first time I got the same error. Then I, digging a solution, pressed F12 after a reboot and got here:

The highlighted option allows me to boot into Windows 8. So I went to boot options (F2) and changed the following configuration:

Load legacy option rom: DisabledBoot list option: UEFI

Now I can boot directly to Windows without need to press F12.

But my objective isn't complete. I want to erase all Ubuntu entries from the seconds image and restore the legacy boot from the first imagem (because they worked before).

I did two things:

I erased all partitions related to Ubuntu (root partition and home partition).I created a Windows recovery disk (not a system recovery disk).

I used the recovery disk to run the automatic recovery procedure (I forgot the exactly name). I've runned it at least 10 times with no success. Then I went to command prompt to try the famous triad: bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot and bootrec /rebuildbcd. Still, no solution.

find a way to activate the ''fluid ligns animation'' on the TV afer one minute of inactivity on the labtop while listing to music.

Setup Installation :: Remove Ubuntu Boot Option From OS List

Feb 2, 2013

I had ubuntu within my windows 7 earlier. Later when i installed windows 8, i formatted the partition ( E: ) in which ubuntu was installed, since the wubi uninstaller was not working. Still when i start my system, it shows ubuntu listed in the boot list. I tried to load it once. It gave an error. There is no error when i select the default windows 8.

Now i checked the boot option in the msconfig as per the thread, but only windows 8 is listed there, no ubuntu. But still it is listed in the boot menu. I tried the disk manager, the only partition without NTFS file system is the one with status "healthy (OEM partition)". I dont know whether its a ubuntu partition. And there is no option to delete it also. No other ubuntu partition. I want to remove the ubuntu boot option from my os list. How to do it?

UEFI - How To Boot From Windows DVD

Sep 21, 2013

I have very little experience with Windows 8 until now. I am having an issue trying to run System Refresh or System Restore from the System Recovery Environment booted from the Windows disc. When I try to run it from the disc I already System Refresh says that the drive is locked. I tried System Restore and it said no OS's were found. I went into the CMD prompt and went to c: and can see the drive just fine.

Steps tried: running fixboot, fixmbr, rebuildbcd commands from CMDrunning dskchk /f (which forced a dismount)

I then read something about a non UEFI bootable disk couldn't access a GPT partition, which I think is the case here. So then I tried oscdimg to make my iso UEFI bootable (twice) and the UEFI Boot Manager still only shows 'Windows Boot Manager' at the boot menu. I even tried downloading an iso that was already UEFI incase I did it wrong and it still doesn't see it.
