How to change names of the folders in navigation pane in Windows 8.1 x64 under This PC category? I want to change the names which are shown in File Explorer, not actually change locations.

I have followed all the steps in the tutorial on removing Favorites from the navigation pane.

The right-click solution does not work because "show favourites" option does not come up when I right click. The second solution using the folder option is not possible because there is no option to check or uncheck I have even tried with th bat. file, but no change took place.

The only option seems to be double click (how quaint) or the triangle (3.1 lives!!). Fyi I'm using server r2 2012/classic shell pounded back into win 7 /rant/ god U SUCK ms the feature would be known as "Run Win 8 with legacy shell" the file explorer is straight out of 8 from what I can see.

Now my File Explorer Navigation Pane Favorites feature is completely missing and cannot be restored, regardless of what I have tried.
I have tried:
1. File Explorer ribbon / View tab / Navigation Pane / Show Favorites = ON
2. Folder Options / General tab / Navigation Pane / Show favorites = ON (also have tried Restore Defaults)
3. Recreate "C:Users<my user name>Links" folder and create a link inside it.
4. Run the "fix_empty_favorites.reg" file

9. Added. Right click on the Navigation pane and Select "Show Favorites" to be ON.
... and of course, log out/login AND reboot multiple times after all of the above.
The Favorites will not appear on Navigation pane.
Often, but not always, the navigation pane in file explorer makes quick up/down motions and in doing so collapses the folder tree in the Library section. As a result I cannot navigate in the left panel (navigation pane) of file explorer as I am not quick enough the click on a sub-folder before the tree collapses. I have the same problem when navigating an "open file" dialogue box which can make opening a file impossible. This happens mostly when disk activity is high such as when search is indexing or my virus scanner is doing its thing.

View 6 Replies View RelatedSince I upgraded to 8.1 (x64), I am unable to hide custom made libraries in the navigation pane. The default libraries can be hidden/shown. Does a custom library have a registry entry? I'm sure its visibility is controlled by a simple value.

I recently connected a SATA HDD to my computer to retrieve files from another computer (mother board died). Now I have multiple entries on my navigation pane for My Computer and C Drive. I have attached a screenshot of my Nav Pane: Click on Prints Phil, This PC and S3A7083D005(C) all get a list of the same (desktop, favorites, documents etc). C Drive got itself renamed to a string of numbers and This PC did not exist before either. My computer's name was Sneezyphil.
I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 two days before I plugged in the SATA HDD so there was no previous restore point unless I reinstall Win 8.1 - but looking at your threads on that issue, might multiply my problems.
Is there a way to re-manage my Navigation pane?
The Navigation Pane on the left side of Windows Explorer has six major categories from top to bottom as follows: Favorites, SkyDrive, Home Group, This PC, Libraries and Network. When I open Windows Explorer, the cursor is positioned on the Library Category. I would prefer the default cursor position to be on Favorites. I assume that there is no easy way to make this change, at least without editing the Registry somewhere.

I've just jumped to Windows 8.1 from 7 and am trying to work out how to unclutter my windows explorer navigation pane.
The bit in question is the "This PC" - it used to just have my c:drive and other network drives, but now it has all these other network devices (security cameras, and sonos amps etc) plus also Desktop, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos folders (which are sort of duplicated under favourites).
Is there a setting somewhere to not show all these extra items, and just go back to showing my C:drive and mapped network drives?
I have a directory in which I have a large number of genealogical records, 756 to be exact. The files are numbered FIN_1881_001_001 to FIN_1881_001_756.
Due to an error when saving these files, I need to change these 756 file numbers to FIN_1891_001_001 to FIN_1891_001_756.
Is there any easy way of doing this without having to change each file name individually.
Is it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed? I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:
projabc (sub-folder)
projabc.txt (file)
projabc.bat (file)
amongst other projects. I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.
I'd prefer to have details for all folders. It looks like I found a solution for the annoying auto changing of folder types:

But I also want the view to stay details even if I change it in explorer's view menu to look at something. In this case currently the setting is immediately saved somewhere and next time I get that view. I want it to show details the next time I visit it...
(I have also disabled thumbs.db and desktop.ini via registry settings.)
I am running Windows 8 64-Bit on a new Advent Monza T100 laptop.
I am unable to make changes to Program Files (x86) which is very annoying as this means I have to install programs to my desktop.
When I try to move something into Program Files (x86) I am greeted by the usual 'You need permission to perform this action' message.
I have tried to Take Ownership of the folder using advice from many different forums, however my problem seems to be unique because I am not able to change the ownership from TrustedInstaller to Administrators.
When I click 'Change' the window transforms into this...
1. my win 7 laptop went "poof"
2. got new computer (but they only have windows 8) am using the desktop part of the computer & installed a start menu so it "looked" reasonably like windows 7.
3. installed windows live mail on new computer since windows 8 has a weird email program.
4. had win 7 computer backed up, so had all my windows live emails safely there.
5. copied all the old win 7 emails into the NEW win 8 live email program
6. everything worked great,, could get new emails & all the old ones were there.
7. worked around the NEW live mail, by changing names of folders, deleting some emails etc. so the folder list was NOT the same as when I moved them, ( I have tons of folders under my inbox 13 years of saved emails)
8. looked in windows explorer at the folder where the emails were supposed to be saved.
9. but,,,,,,,,,,,, nothing was changed,,, it still was all the old names etc.
10. for example, I changed a folder name (IN live mail)from dog to cat, & deleted cow.
11. but looking at windows explorer it was still dog & cow was still there.
12. opening live mail,,, it was the changed folders cat.
13. so I do not get it..
14. why didn't the folders in windows explorer CHANGE to reflect all my changes in windows live mail?
15. I need to keep backing up this folder , in case something else goes "poof" To use it for restore.
Is there a way to stop the UTC being added to file names? This practice is causing havoc with my RootsMagic family tree media references.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIn Windows 8 Explorer ( have they changed the name of it ) you know, the file manager. In the left side, the top of the "tree" you have Desktop, Downloads, etc ....
I created a folder when the pc was new called Jack's Stuff. Later, much later, I decided I didn't like the name with "stuff" ... so I changed it to Jack's Place. Instead of the typical My(fill in the blank). So it changed there. But following through the tree to it's origin down finding it through USERS>Jack ... etc. It's still in all cases called Jack's Stuff. Now this is not typical for XP and before that. I jumped right from XP to Windows 8.
Why didn't the name change everywhere and not just at the top of the tree? Is there a way to insure the name changes everywhere if you rename a folder. Oh, I tried going through USERS>Jack and changing it but I forget right now but it didn't work out completely kosher.
Win 8.1 has added a piece in brackets to files on my new PC. Now none of my slide shows work because each jpg has this bracketed info in the file name. I have tried overwriting the files with originals from a backup but these too are changed. Can I stop this happening? Is there a bit of code to delete the bracketed part of the many thousands of files affected?
I have loads of Nero nvc files that I can no longer open because of this name change.
When two or more documents of a program (microsoft word, for example) are used then the word icons are grouped in the task bar. When the mouse pointer is put over the word icon then a little window appears with the document names. This is useful but sometimes is not fast enough.
Is there possible to display the word document title names as extended icon names. Then it wouldn't be necessary to put the mouse pointer over the icons to choose the desired word document because the document names would be displayed in a task bar like two separated icons.
I installed 2003 outlook and word (outlook editor) on my brand new Win 8.1 netbook and when typing the "TO" and "CC" lines the names show up but when pressing enter they will not be accepted. I have to enter the first couple of letters of the names and then press the "check names" icon and go through the list even though the one I wanted was the one that showed up on the auto fill line singularly.
I know the auto fill does not go to the outlook contact book but rather remembers the names as they are "sent".
I have used outlook for years on both Win XP and Win 7 (various 32+64, Pro, Ultimate) and now with Win 8 it will NOT work the same way. My brother has the identical netbook and is running Outlook 2007 and it performs the same way - will not allow enter to complete the autofill. Whatsup over there at MS?
My program and features list is emptied by malware but all programs are working normally. how do I re-entry the deleted (not uninstalled) programs' name in the control panel program and features?

View 4 Replies View RelatedOn my windows 8.1 PC whenever I plug in any USB pen drive the thumbnail for the device is always an image of a Sandisk Cruzer Titanium as is the identity when I go to the safely remove hardware toolbar.
The Sandisk probably was the first pen drive I plugged into the machine when new but surely it should be picking up details of subsequent devices or at the very least showing generic details.
I keep finding files with names such as 3977C900 or similar on my system. The file type is called "File" and contains 0 kb. Why these are being created and how I can stop it ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn Win 8 Windows Explorer, the preview pane seems to be able to display previews of all file types I really use except the type I use most-- eml email files. Is it possible to get the preview pane to show a preview of an eml file?
I have noticed that if I simply manually edit an eml file's extension from eml to mht-- it will be displayed in the preview pane.
I have hundreds if not thousands of eml files saved to disk. I really don't want to change all of them to mht because that eliminates email functionality of the file. Meaning, I would not be able to double-click the file, open it and respond to or forward it as an email message.
I have Windows 8.1 and just noticed this behaviour after reinstalling Adobe Acrobat Pro XI. Say I have a document called A.pdf. I want to rename the file so I right-click, click rename, and type B.pdf. The file still appears in the folder as A.pdf and when I double-click it to open it, I get an error from Acrobat: "There was an error opening this document."
This only happens with PDFs, not with DOCs or TXTs.
This seems bad, and I'm concerned something is wrong with the way the OS is behaving. Can't delete the many too-long profile directories in backups. Is this symptomatic of some future failure?

View 1 Replies View Relatedi currently can not access the available Wi-Fi networks menu. when i attempt to open the available networks pane from either the taskbar, or the settings charm, explorer restarts. i receive no error. I think the problem originated a couple of days ago. on that day, i logged on and the resolution was wrong; Windows had just completed installing an update. since then, i've reinstalled the graphic, network, and audio drivers. i've also uninstalled the latest Windows updates, as well as try and use system restore to go back about a month. no results. the only thing telling is i get an error in safe mode that says "The instruction at 0x389fac1c referenced memory at 0x0000000. The memory could not be written." i recieve this error when i attempt to open the Network connections menu from the taskbar like usual.
