View 3 Replies View RelatedSince an update a few days ago my mouse is taking about 2/3 minutes to appear after going back to my PC after it has been left for a while.
I have checked all USB ports, used another mouse but it still has this problem, Once it gets itself going it is fine.
My DPI is currently on 250% and I like it this way. The problem is that the elements of my windows seem too big now and take up too much space.
If you open "My PC", the bar with "Name", "Type", "Available Space", etc is too thick. Is there no way to decrease the size of this bar and perhaps strip the entire layout like in good old XP? I don't need Groups/Categories twirl down menu, my current directory address/location, back&forth buttons, etc. I just need it simple and compact.
Few tips or tools on manual customization of windows layout? I tried googling but I only found out how to manually resize scroll bars Scrollbar - Change Width Size in Windows 8 ...
Windows 8.1 and my setup.
Every game I open has a separate red and blue 3D appearance. I will attach a pic. The warning in corner is new, tried turning shadows off, no luck also tried a different monitor and different resolutions = same results.

I have my installation of Windows 8.1 desktop taskbar set to never combine, use small icons and locked. With XP I could pin a program to the taskbar, click it once and the program would open. Click the program icon a second time and a new instance of the program would open. With Win 8.1 if you click the icon the second time the window simply minimizes. How can I restore the old XP behavior. I realize that I can right-click on the icon after one instance is open and open another instance of the program. However, that is an additional step that is a pain in the butt.
I should add that I use the latest version of Classic Shell and have look through the settings and don't see any that can change this behavior.
I quite often place files on my Windows 8 desktop while im working on various stuff and have a problem with icons I cant fix, for example: I have a number of PDF files currently on my desktop and my pdf program is foxit. I DONT WANT TO CHANGE THE PROGRAM ICON, just the icons of the files it makes. I had the same issue on win7 and i know I can change folder view options to "show icons and not thumbnails" but unfortunately that screws up my image icons.
In windows 7, "types" and "nirsoft files type manager" allowed you to change the file type icon from the thumbnail to whatever icon you wanted. These 2 progs plus another I've tried don't work in win 8pro?
Where did the desktop colors applet disappear to? It's under personalize under Windows 7 but it's not there under Windows 8.

From the desktop view I simply want to look down and to the right to see the "Sunday, September 8, 2013 - 2:17PM" I see now ... but have to move my mouse over there and hover over it first. Why would I want to have to do that?
It wasn't possible in XP (that I know of) not without having to expand your taskbar to twice the width. (And let's face it, there is nothing quite as intimidating as a big huge fat thick taskbar.)
I had 8.1 installed, and did the update from 8/12/2014 and now I can't change my date and time from the desktop, it gives me the following message;
You are attempting to open a file type of 'System file' (.cpl)
These files are used by the operating system and by various programs. Modifying or editing them could damage your system.

Windows 8.1 is becoming a real hassle to deal with
I recently built my own PC (I5-4670K) and installed Win 8.1 64 Bit OEM Builder. Installation went fast and easy. Updated all my drivers/win updates in the past 2 hours. Windows 8.1 is activated.
When I go to Taskbar and Navigation properties -> navigation menu -> "Show my desktop background on Start " and "Search everywhere instead of just my apps when I search from the Apps view" are BOTH GRAYED OUT.
When I go to Personalization to choose images for my background nothing happens. Not even windows desktop backgrounds or anything in my picture library gets recognized.
Changing fonts by modifying the UITHEME.DLL temporarily using ResourceEditor.exe? Attempting to figure out a way to modify 8.1 fonts by utilizing registry tweaks, I happened to stumble upon this modification. I was able to make the modification, lost "aero" temporarily, edited the font titles via registry by changing the HEX entries, restart, fonts changed (along with colors), and then removed the tweak to the .dll, aero back.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a number of special fonts (all are .ttf) that I installed, and some that came with software for use with the programs. All of these fonts worked fine when installed on my Windows 7 64-bit computer.
I have installed all of these fonts on my Windows 8 64-bit computer, and some of the characters on the fonts do not show. Windows has substituted other characters in place of these.
Yet when I open the font in a third party program like Font Creator, all of the characters on the font appear true.
Is there a setting in Windows 8 that I need to adjust so the characters will show as they are supposed to?
When I run Windows 8 in the native 1600x900 resolution of this monitor, text all over the place becomes very fuzzy. I had to drop it to 1440x900 to have smooth text.
Any way to fix this? One of my Windows 8 PCs at home runs at 1600x900 and the text on it looks just fine. Does it have something to do with the video driver?
Customising user folder icons has always been a bit tricky. All user folders apart from the desktop and contacts user folders can be changed via the customize tab in properties when the user folder is accessed from my computer (i.e. not from the desktop).
To customise the desktop and contacts user folders requires a registry change. For Windows 7 this is explained here User Folders - Change Default Icon - Windows 7 Forums, and the necessary .reg files are also provided. This method actually worked for me too in Windows 8. However, after the newest updates, the icons I had added this way have disappeared, and so has the customize tab which I had added via the .reg files available on the page mentioned above. Repeating the reg change would not make a difference. The newest updates must have changed something in the Windows 8 registry to that effect (through those updates all other user folders also lost the custom icon I had previously added, but I was able to easily restore them, as the customize tab of these user folders didn't disappear).
Hence my question: how to now change the folder icons for the desktop and contacts user folders in windows 8?
Since all my other user folders are customised in a particular style, leaving the default icon for the desktop and contacts folders looks a bit weird...
is it possible to change the start menu's font size and/or tile size without impacting the desktop's icon and text size? from what i can tell the "make text and other items larger/smaller" is global, i.e. it can't be used independently in terms of the start menu and desktop...

I know they don't slow up staring time in this version of Windows but they wreck your font selection in word processors. The 'hide' command is already on but it does nothing, they still show up in the font selection.

I have pasted some English alphabet OpenType font files into control panel / appearance and personalisation / fonts but they do not show up in the fonts folder. If I try to paste the files again it tells me "the gotham light file font is already installed - do you want to replace it?"
So if the font files are installed why can't I see them in the fonts folder?
I have tried unchecking "hide fonts based on language settings" but that does not seem to work. The fonts do not show up in Microsoft Word or Adobe CS6 and I get the same problem on my Windows 7 machine.
I installed a pack of 10000 (ya) fonts. Now I can't change fonts on any program, when I use the drop down menu for fonts, the program just crashes.

I was running Windows 8.0 with WMC and then I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and now my WMC's plugins (I have HD TV Recorder & Media Browser) are both unusable because I can't see the text anymore - it is just a blank place where the text used to be - I know these programs are otherwise working because I can navigate among the titles and see the background images so I know it is working, but I can't use them.
