I am getting a Windows 8 tablet and want to set up Gmail on the Windows 8 mail app. I don't have a Microsoft account.
Should I sign up for a MS account using a Hotmail address, or using my Gmail address? What is the advantage in using a Hotmail address in order to access my Gmail. What are the pros & cons?
I'd like to be able to view/send email but not download it onto my tablet, as I use Live Mail on my main PC and want all my downloaded email on that computer.

Win 8.1 .... Switch to a Microsoft account on this PC. The password you entered is incorrect. Try again.
Can make the password visible, it is correct. Running no version of webroot. Restore the computer to a time when the password worked, it never has even though it is correct for signing into my account on the micro website. Changed my password and still no success.

I am a system administrator in a large enterprise environment and we are doing a rollout of Windows 8.1. In our image capture we somehow captured a setting that is disabling users from setting up a connected account with their domain account. I am relatively sure that it is in my unattend and I can fix it for machines going forward but I really don't want to have to reimage the machines I've already deployed.
When I go to connect an account, the "connect to a Microsoft account" option is grayed out and the "some settings are managed by your administrator" message is displayed at the top. This is NOT a group policy object that is applying. The machines are in a test OU and there is absolutely no policy applied. I have searched all through local policy and even did a search through the registry for "account" (that took forever) but have been unable to find any registry key or local policy that would be causing this issue.
What setting might be causing this? I have 30+ machines already out in the environment and the user experience is going to be terrible if I have to reimage them all.

I have Windows 8 installed on a local account and wish to sign in from my Microsoft Account but only as & when required not all of the time. Shawn's tutorial "How to Sign in with a Different Microsoft Account to the Store in Windows 8" covers the procedure which should apply.
Attempting this offers only the "Sign In" button however once clicked the spinning circle appears for a fleeting second before the pointer is returned to the button once more, further attempts loopback in the same manner.
I can only surmise that this is happening because I have undertaken a customised install using Kari's excellent tutorial "How to Relocate User Profiles to another Partition or Disk in Windows 8" where the User Profile concerned is "D:User" and not "C:UsersUser" this being my longstanding preference from previous Windows installs from XP to 7.
I have tried the mklink /j route to link both C:UsersUser and D:UsersUser with D:User but with no success.
Is there a registry key containing the profile path which is used by the store sign in which requires modifying to my customised path of D:User?? .....or is something else amiss??

Win 8 Pro x64. I had to use my Administrator account today and then returned to my named Local/Admin one. Now, when I go to reboot, Windows gives a message that "Other people are logged on to this computer. Restarting Windows might cause them to lose data." What I don't find is a way to sign out of that Admin account. Is there, short of disabling it? Seems sort of a Catch-22.

Now that we learned how to bypass the 8,1 login hijacking; is there a way to bypass LIVE account sign-in nonsense when using Metro Essential apps (Mail, People, Calendar) at this point?

Updated to 8.1, created a couple of users accounts - but unable to sign into these accounts. Clicking to sign in, simply shows (a few seconds later) - 'Signing out'. No errors or similar reported and nothing obvious in the Event Log of the Admin user.
Have tried a variety of accounts - with passwords, without, child accounts, etc - same result.
Any accounts existing prior to 8.1 seem to work okay.
Safety Scanner and SFC check found no problems. A bit more testing found that if I create a new Administrator user, then this user can be logged onto and works fine. Whereas the Standard or Child accounts still won't logon. Accounts created using a pre-existing 2nd Administrator user (i.e. pre 8.1) show the same behaviour.
Logged on as Admin1 (my account).
Created W-user2 (child user) - unable to logon
Created test-user (std user) - unable to logon
Created test-21-1 (std user - created 21/10/13 after sfc check) - unable to logon
Created Admin3 (admin user) - Logon successful
Logged on as Admin2 (pre-existing 2nd Admin account)
Created standard2 (std user) - unable to logon
Created child2 (child user) - unable to logon
Created Admin4 (admin user) - Logon successful
So, it looks like only new Admin users can logon. A pre-existing Standard user account can still logon (as before).

Two days ago I received quite a strong new Win 8.1 computer (with SATA drive). I have opted for a LOCAL user only without a password.
The boot process was extremely fast: the computer turns-on to the blue log-in screen in few seconds; and then pressing Enter the signing-in process was almost immediate.
Then, a bad thing happened: I was lured by Microsoft to sign-in with a Microsoft account. Then, signing-in to my computer with this MS account (and password) took ages; I mean, something like a full one minute the computer was trying to sign-in until eventually succeeding.
Understanding my mistake (why would I want an MS account?) I decided to disconnect from my Microsoft account, and return back to my nice local user.
But now, the long waiting time to signing-in (even without a password, and with an automatic log-in) still remains: I wait like 25 sec when the blue screen and the white dot circulate repeatedly until my account is signed-in.

For the last 2 days, I can't get logged into my computer.
My computer (running windows 8.1) starts up fine, and I get to the screen where I select my user profile and enter my password. I only have 1 account set up on this machine, and it uses my Microsoft Account log-on information. I enter my password correctly, and it starts to "appear" as though I am getting logged in. I receive the "Welcome" and the dots go around in a circle as it is loading. After about 5 minutes, it goes no where and then the enter passwod pops back up. I can not get past this screen, It just keeps going around in circles. I have also tried using the PIN instead of password, same result. Sometimes I receive the message "the user profile service failed the sign-in".
So far I have tried resetting my Microsoft password, and have done that successfully. I can access my Hotmail and all that fine from other machines. I also took the computer and hardwired the internet to it, thinking it might be something with the wireless (although if it is wasn't seeing the internet I would think it would tell me that).
I seem to remember a few days ago the computer telling me it was updating when I shut down, so maybe that is causing something. I am stuck and don't know where to go from here.

I just bought a new laptop and the problem is, I cannot switch to a Microsoft account. It either gets stuck at the "preparing your account" window or would say that there are network problems. This has been happening since I bought this laptop, which is about a week now.

How to skip Microsoft Account login?
1. During installation while configuring the user account it will as for a Microsoft account Login - Enter anything@anything.com and blabla in the respective fields - press enter.
2. It may ask for a Security Code to verify because the account doesn't exist or confirm it is yours.
3. You will be able to "see" Create Local Account. Just click on it and enjoy.

I've got a very annoying problem with Windows 8.1 x64 . Ever since the 8.1 update Micorosoft has been pushing logging in via Microsoft Account rather than a local account. Though the Micrsosoft account provides some benefits (copy desktop, OneDrive etc) it also has some pitfalls
My problem is with the languange preferences / keyboard layout :
I've got 3 systems which are US international keyboard and 1 system with an UK keyboard. All systems boot with US int. keyboard, when on the laptop i change to UK, all systems boot with UK. When then I change with both languages installed to US again, next reboot the laptop defaults to US.
Though I like synchronizing accounts, keyboard lay-out should be able to be opted out and be a local setting. I can't make it work properly with JUST UK on the laptop and US int on the other 3 systems.

When setting up Windows 8 64-bit Pro on the page titled "Sign in to your PC" I choose the sign into my Microsoft account as opposed to "Sign in without Microsoft Account". Big mistake. It created a username called dwmad_000 which is part of my email address used for that Microsoft account.
To amend this username to one of choice, I changed the name in my online Microsoft account and also from C.Panel created a local account. I now have both in Windows Explorer but the default one is always dwmad_000.
How to get rid of dwmad_000 or change it permanently to First Name Last Name and sycn the 2.

I've installed Windows 8.1 Home Premium on my parents laptop and I'm now trying to set up their email account.
It is a non MS account which Windows 8 doesn't seem to allow me to create. I've searched for a solution but they seem to require the Local Group policy to be edited and as far I've researched home premium doesn't include the management function to do so.
Does this mean if you are using Windows 8.1 Home Premium you are tied to using a MS mail account.

I recently updated two of my computers to Windows 8.1 and One thing that seems to be a public nuisance is having to use a Microsoft Account to have a syncing onedrive folder. This aside I have been trying to get File/Printer Sharing working between a file server and a client.
With my previous W7 setup I would create custom groups for access to certain file sets and it would all go off without a hitch, the same is true with Windows 8.1 and local accounts. The issue comes in when I try to link a MS account to said local account, at this point it seems to ignore the group permissions. Below is a diagram of the setup and the expected/actual results.
Code: = Windows 8.1 File Server =- Added localuser test1- Added user to administrators group- Link test1 to MSAccount- Verified user is still part of administrators group- Give Administrators Read-Write permission and Security on the relevant share and files= Windows 8.1 Client =- Added localuser test1- Added user to administrators group- Link test1 to MSAccount- Verified user is still part of administrators group
With this setup, if I try to write a file to the share in question, I get an access denied, but if I instead explicitly give test1 Read-Write access to the share then the user can write files as expected. If I unlink the MSAccount from the localaccount then the share works as expected with out the user-explicit permissions. Finally, after I have tested the localaccount is working, if I link the accounts back to the Microsoft Account it once again stops working. It seems like MS screwed the pooch on this one and completely broke it's own group policy permission compatibility.

Is there a way to reset a microsoft account?Several times I have formatted and reinstalled and each time when it asks whether I want to use the settings already assigned to my profile or not...and selecting No...it still seems to be bring things over like the wallpaper etc.
So to be clear, fresh install....during final stages, it asks to create a login or sign in using a microsoft account which is what I do. When I do this, it asks whether I want to use the settings already on the profile...I say no I want to set it up as a new PC and yet still wallpaper comes back (Sony vaio wallpaper)
I'm just thinking if the wallpaper comes back..what else does? So I want to know whether there is a way (apart from closing the account and recreating it) to reset the profile so nothing is attached to it.

My Win 8 installation, upon a power on startup or restart, booted to the Start screen without going through the process of logging in. I don't recall how I accomplished that. I just upgraded to 8.1 and it insists on logging into my MS account and requires I enter my account password.
How do I get 8.1 to avoid that step?

Windows 8 creates a roaming profile in the C:Users directory using xxxxxx_000 subdirectories for each Microsoft account which is created.
Apparently, these subdirectories are only temporary directories that are recreated each time a user logs on to Windows 8 via these accounts.
Is there a way to make sure that these profiles are completely deleted when the user logs off from his Microsoft account?
