Network / Sharing :: Trying To Change Public Network To Private
Apr 13, 2013
I'm also trying to change my public network to private.
"Hit Winkey + R to open Run prompt and type gpedit.msc" When I follow this I get an error message saying that gpedit.msc can't be found. I'm running win 8 on a Lenovo Think Pad.

When I upgraded from 8 to 8.1 my 8 network got change from public to private under 8.1. I need it to be public and I can find no way to do that. Is it possible?
I tried setting up another network via Network and Sharing Center but after choosing Set up a New Network the window does nothing. It said it might take 90 seconds to for the new devices to appear. Well it has been closer to 90 minutes and still nothing.

Since I've got windows 8 nobody was able to connect to me via hamachi, though it works when two others who have windows 8 connect to each other, so i was looking for what was different, and apparently it doesnt let through any data when it's set to "public network".
The problem here is that usually you change it by clicking on the network symbol, right-clicking your network and turn sharing on or off, but hamachi makes up another network which isn't listed in the primary interface. I've tried many things already and I'm kind of looking for a direct cmd-Command which allows me to change it quickly.
So, basically, I try to change a network-setting from public to private without using the "normal way to do it".

I am trying to change my wireless network profile from public to private, but cannot for the life of me figure out how...
Network Location - Set to Private or Public in Windows 8
^^ Those instructions no longer work on 8.1, and when I go into PC Settings > Network > Tap my network I see no options to enable sharing. I don't have Pro on this particular tablet so I have no access to gpedit.msc nor secpol.msc. What the hell do I have to do to change it? Other than this one ridiculous fault, I think 8.1 is far better than 8 (so far anyway.)

I went back through the last few pages but didn't see something similar. Using 8.1.
Just had to setup a new network. Switched it to private and wanting to require password requirements for log on. However, when I turned on my IPod to test it out, my IPod connected without me getting a password prompt.
I'm know I'm missing something, just not where. Checked both the PC settings screen, as well as the Network Screen under the Control Panel.

So i downloaded LogMeIn Hamachi and accidentally put it onto private network, so now everytime the program is working i cannot connect to the internet outside of the hamachi connections. Now i can switch my Wi-fi connection to to public/private by clicking networks, right clicing the one i want to change and clicking turn sharing on/off. But hamachi is not in this list, it is in the network and sharing network centre, were i cannot find how to switch it to public.

I am trying to share a folder over a local network so I can access it from my Android device. I am using ES filebrowser to access the computer. I have included my user creds when connecting but the only share available is the Public folder on C:, while I have other shares on a different (external USB HDD) drive that give me errors.
The error I get from ES is (Login fails) This may be caused by: WLAN is off; SMB is out of network scope; IP is invalid; Blocked by firewall; SMB service is off.
I have tried connecting from another windows pc using the same credentials and am able to view all the shares.
After creating new shares on local drives it seems the only shares that are unavailable are ones created on the external drive.
Also, trying to connect to this drive on Ubuntu gives: Unable to access location - Failed to mount Windows share: Invalid argument.

I'm trying to connect to a public open hotspot on my desktop that requires authentication by a web browser. I'm currently getting limited connectivity and I am not prompted that extra information is required (Like I am on this windows 7 laptop)
The windows8 drivers on my usb wireless adapter are all up to date. Troubleshooting says that I have a DNS problem, that the address doesn't exist. I've it with automatic and manual 1st 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 I've also tried disabling ipv6. It's so easy to connect on any other device, first issues I've had with this wi-fi, so It's safe to say it's a issue my end.

I recently bought a new laptop (Lenovo T440s, Win 8.1 Pro w/ update 1, Intel 7260AC). I've tried connecting via wireless in multiple locations, and haven't had any problems except in one location, which is at my office's public access WiFi. I can get onto the network and get internet access on my win7 laptop, and on my Surface 2. With the new Lenovo it appears that I've connected to the wireless network, but have no internet connection. When I initially select the network I get connected, and can open a web page. But then it switches to a "limited" connection and I no longer have access.
Windows defender/firewall is on. No other security things that I know of (I deleted the Norton trial that came with it).
There is a screen that comes up when I log on with any device that asks you to accept that you will not download porn, steal the firstborn child, etc. I've bookmarked the page and been able to push the button to agree, but I still lose the connection shortly after that.
I don't have the internet connection anywhere on the computer (this isn't just a browser issue).
I've tried reinstalling the wireless driver. No luck. I have the most recent version (17), and I've also tried installing the Intel PROset/wireless software as noted in this thread (BT Public Wifi works on Windows 7 but not Windows
8.). But quite honestly I'm not totally sure what to try doing after that is installed. I ran the diagnosis tool, and got a failure on the ping test (No Response: default gateway, DHCP server).

I purchased a new ASUS laptop a couple of days ago and have been trying to use the hotel wifi where I am staying to do the various updates and installs that new computers require. Unfortunately, while I can connect to my tethered cell phone, I cannot connect to the hotel.
I have another computer on hand that has no difficulties connecting to the hotel wifi, so I know the problem is in the new computer somewhere.
Network adapter is a Broadcom 802.11ac
Actions so far:
-Updated Windows 8.1 to current
-Attempted to reinstall drivers (uninstalling first) - Drivers are up to date and identical to the ones on manufacturer's site.

some public wi-fi services require a sign on (even if free) -- for example in the UK in most Weatherspoon's pubs there is a free wi-fi service -- _the cloud_ I think it's called (the underscores are part of the name). You register once and then it works in almost every Weatherspoon's pub I've ever been in - if you can log on.
(Weatherspoon's pubs while not the best do have on the whole the CHEAPEST beer in the UK and some actually have some good Guest Ales --rare for a Corporate type of chain whatever people think about that particular organisation -- probably learned more POLISH in one of those places than even on a trip to Poland !!!).
Now - especially on phones sometimes the logon message disappears quickly so you can't get connected to the wi-fi even though the phone says "Connected". -- The same happens on a laptop.
Is there anyway to get the logon screen back again without re-booting or disconnecting from that wi-fi service or re-booting a phone. This only seems to happen on PC's with IE10 and above. (Happens on W7 and Windows 8 laptops) and phones where the logon notification can disappear so fast you miss it.

Something about 8 is diff than 7 with regard to setting up Network, and Type of network. This seems to default any new network connection to "Private", whatever that means. In order to share in a Homegroup I need the network type to be "Home".

I have already tried by right-clicking network, but HAMACHI network doesnt appear in the list as it is a virtual device.

So Right now my wifi network shows as "Wireless_Home_Network 5"
I don't have any other wifi networks saved.
How do I get rid of the "5"?
I changed routers several times which is why I'm at "5", but the SSID and password were always the same, I don't know where this "5" is coming from?
Under my network profile it says "Wireless_Home_Network". So again, I don't know where the "5" is coming from?

My internet provider is BT and they have a couple of public wifi signals that I use when I can't get onto my Home Router, I can use their public wifi on my old Acer windows 7 laptop but I'm having a lot of problems with using it on my new Windows 8.1 Dell Laptop, I can connect to their public wifi and it loads the login page fast but then I can't load any other page. Sometimes it works for a bit but then stops out of nowhere or it will only load some of the page and then just stops loading it. Sometimes it disconnects me and other times it won't let me connect to the network at all. I can use it on my little sister's laptop which runs windows 7 and it's a lot faster than on my new laptop and I never had these problems on my old laptop.
I have a Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop which has an Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 adapter built in but I can't use their public Wifi with it so I use an external wireless adapter dongle since I can get faster speeds when connected to my Home Router and it picks three different BT wifi signals but I'm having this issue with all three of them.

Lately, my metro apps (except Store) have not been able to connect to the internet. Also, what do I lose when my network is set to public?

Is there a way to setup network profiles or something so that when I bring my Surface Pro to work and connect to the wireless network there it will use the static ip address I have but when I disconnect and then connect to my home wifi it will go back to DHCP? On my MacBook Pro I can go into the network settings and change the location profile I have setup for networks but I don't see anything like this for Windows 8.

I've got a Lenovo all-in-one 64 bit PC. When I click on Change PC Settings in the Settings charm the 'Wireless' option is missing. It appears exactly as expected on my laptop - also a 64bit windows 8 machine.
(My bluetooth mouse and keyboard are working as is my wireless LAN connection, so it's clearly working but I can't change anything).

This morning I installed an optional update from Windows Update. It was Ralink Technology WLAN 802.11 wireless LAN card.
Since then, when I try to print to my wireless network printer, the network would disconnect then come back on after a while. The update shows up in Update History as successfully installed but not in the installed updates. System restore is of no support here. The network configuration page shows normal. The web does not appear to be affected. I made a new network connection for the printer but it did not work.
Is there a way to reverse this update or should I uninstall the 802.11 LAN card and let windows re-install anew.
The printer is a HP Officejet Pro 8600e

Here are my settings on my Windows 8 Computer:
This is the error I get on my Windows 7 computer:
What's up with this? On a related note, is it possible to share this folder with a specific PC, rather than "Everyone" on the network?

I am having trouble with ICS on win 8. On my old laptop (win xp) I used to be able to share my 3Connect dongle internet to connect to Xbox live. I recently got a new laptop with win 8 and whenever I share this internet connection I can never connect on my Xbox (the network to internet part fails). When everything is connected up and shared the Ethernet says 'Unidentified Network' which i believe is the cause of the problem. I've read i may require a driver update but i cannot seem to find one.
My Laptop: Toshiba Satellite C855-29N
what to do, maybe i am not setting up the connection sharing properly?

I've been trying to set up an old Savin 9033 printer through the company's router, but I couldn't find the network it's set up on from any other computer.
So I pull up Network & Sharing, see that Network Discovery is turned off.
I check it, go to click on "Save Changes" and nothing happens. I click it a few times and it kicks me back to the previous page, nothing saved. No password prompt or anything.
I double checked that all the appropriate services are running (DNS Client, SSDP Discovery, UPnP Device Host, Function Discoveryr Resource Publication, etc.) and made sure Network Discovery was allowed through Windows Firewall.
