Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.x Copying From NAS To UAC Folder Error
Nov 4, 2013
I have a Synology DS213+ NAS which is running well. Since upgrading to Windows 8.x I now get an error every time I try to copy/move a file or folder from the NAS to a UAC protected directory, i.e. C:
The error is: "Location is not available. P: is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure that the device or drive is connected..." it goes on.
Anyway, if I copy the file to the desktop first, or another non UAC folder, its fine.
I am aware of Windows 8.1 causing some other issues with the NAS so I have disabled SMB2 and Large MTU.
I have witnessed this exact same problem on someone else's 213+ and Windows 8.1 so I know I am not alone.

I am trying to share a specific folder on my Windows 8 computer with my Windows 7 computer. They are both on the same network connected to the same router. The Windows 8 computer is connected through ethernet, while the Windows 7 computer is connected wirelessly.
Here are my settings on my Windows 8 Computer:
This is the error I get on my Windows 7 computer:
What's up with this? On a related note, is it possible to share this folder with a specific PC, rather than "Everyone" on the network?

Under Win 8 Pro 64-bit, I discovered the following oddity: When I try to mount an ISO image using the Windows' built-in mounting function, it works when the the ISO is located on a local drive, but NOT if it is on a network drive (linked to my NAS). The latter case yields an error saying that mounting failed without further explanation. (YES, the Iso file type is associated to Windows Explorer and YES, there is a spare drive letter after the local drive letters; actually my local drives are from B: (DVD) to D:, and the network drives are between F: and Z:, so that a mounted ISO receives a virtual drive at E: .
Qny better solution than installing third-party mounting software like DaemonTools?

I like to disable to protection that prevents me from copying files from a mapped network drive directly to Windowsetc. I need to copy the file to a local drive first and I find that annoying.
I've already disabled zone security warnings and the open file warning but this one I can't seem to find.

On my home network there are Windows 8-A, Windows 8-B and W7 machines. There is no problem networking among these machines except from Windows 8-A to W7. The shared folders on the W7 are displayed on Windows 8-A but if I attempt to click-open any one of them no ID/PW is asked for and the following message is displayed:
"You do not have permission to access . . . . . Contact your network administrator . . . "
Windows 8-A <--> Windows 8-B OK
Windows 8-B <--> W7 OK
Windows 8-A <-- W7 OK
Windows 8-A --> W7 NG
Windows 8-B and W7 are logged in by the same ID and password, but Windows 8-A is logged in by a different ID and PW. I can open any folder of the W7 from Windows 8-A *if* Windows 8-A is logged in by the same ID and PW as for W7/Windows 8-B.

I found that my two Windows 8.1 laptops will not copy the entire contents of any folder to my Iomega network drive. Only the folder alone is copied and none of the sub-folders or individual files. I can copy individual files separately, but not the whole folder sub-folder, and files together. I have no problem doing this with my Windows 7 desktop PCs. My network drive is connected directly to my Apple Airport Base Station router.

We just purchased a new office computer and it came equipped with windows 8. Everything seemed to set up wonderfully as I connected back up to the server we have here in the office that is running Windows 2008 Server. I set up my printers, I mapped the network drives I needed.
The problem I am having is that the mapped drives seemed to be "read-only." I can view and open all files, but I cannot save or create new folders on the drive. I have not changed anything on the server, as far as user settings or permissions because everything was working smooth on the former computer that ran WinXP.
I have checked the "manage your credentials" to ensure I have the proper Windows Credentials loaded. Below you will see a screen shot of what I keep running into.

Windows 8.1 PC, For some reason if I click on any pc or device in the network folder in file explorer it comes back with <xxxx> is not accessable.
I can access folders on these same inaccessible pcs from the homegroup folder in the same file explorer, just not the network folder in file explorer
(3) other PCs in the same workgroup are not having any issues accessing these PCs via the network folder in explorer. These PCs are all running windows 7. Unfortunately I don't have a second windows 8 pc for testing.

Sys: Windows 8.1 Pro clients attached to MS 2003 server domain. (yes I know its best to have a higher win server version with 8.1, but i do not have that currently)
Ok, so the problem is that roaming profiles and folder redirection work but on only SOME of the windows 8.1 clients!!!!
How can these both work fine on only SOME of my essentially identical workstations?
I realize that I need different Profile types for the different OS's. I have applied the V4 registry edit and created a V4 default profile in my sysvol directory on the DC so that the workstations get a proper V4 starting profile.
All PC's are in same OU container.
My GPO's for roaming profiles and folder redirection have not changed from my XP workstations, Windows server 2003 domain controller.
So I create a new user, and log into one of the Windows 8.1 client machines on my local lan. Wow, profile works, V4 created in the profile share, redirection works perfectly. So I log out. I then remote to an identical PC across my wan. Log in as same user and it works fine, get the redirected desktop, and profile. But now the fun begins. I log out to complete the profile "swap" back to the server. I try to log back in and the disaster starts. (Yes, I have triple checked my permissions on all shares etc.)
I get the "DESKTOP cannot be loaded error". Logs show REDIRECTION SUCCESSFUL for my desktop!!! What the?
I have received the "redirection gpo not applied till next login" log, but it is intermittent. Its like the OS does does not know it nose from its butt! How can my desktop be redirected successfully and I get a message that my DESKTOP IS NOT AVAILABLE?
So I go back to my local lan machine and try logging in as this same user, IT WORKS FINE OVER AND OVER AGAIN!
How I can get my roaming profiles and folder redirection to work normally with my Windows 8.1 clients on my MS 2003 domain server?

3 computers connected in LAN, with a shared folder/drive. Suppose I have access to the WIFI on the same network.
I have access to the router also(means I can type in browser, 192.168.1.1 and can login). Then in DHCP hosts I can see the connected computers ip address.
Then how will I access the shared folder? I don't know the server name. How will we find out the server name?
I don't know the name of shared folder also. How will we find out the shared folder in the network?

I have several computers on my local wireless network:
- Windows 8 Pro
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP
- Mac OS X
Right now to copy file from one to another I use USB Flash key which is pretty time consuming, especially if I have to do it 100 times a day.
So I was thinking, is there any way to share a single folder for read/write access among all those computers?

I have a PC with Windows 8.1 and a Mac with Mavericks. I have a folder on the Mac that is shared with the PC. When I'm on the PC and I try to open a file that is shared by the Mac, such as an ISO file (a disk image), then I get a message saying that I cannot open the file, or the file is in use (it depends on the app/filetype). I have the same problem when I open a video file. Strangely, text files and PDF files are just fine. And if I copy any of the problematic files to the local Windows disk, then I can open them just fine.
The specific error messages are:
- AVI files opened in VLC: "Your input can't be opened. VLC is unable to open the MRL."
- ISO files opened by Windows Explorer: "Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file."
This only started happening after I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on the PC and Mavericks on the Mac. Mavericks upgraded its SMB version from SMB1 to SMB2, so perhaps that is related?

After discovered that my C:Users folder was shared by default, I right clicked the folder and unchecked "Share this folder" in Advanced Sharing under Share tab. I also went into Control Panel - Folder Options - View and unchecked "Use Sharing Wizard". However, as soon as the computer restarts, the C:Users folder is back to being shared again. "Use Sharing Wizard' under Folder Options remains unchecked after reboots. I am using Windows 8 Pro.

I have to PC's that belong to the same homegroup. When I go to explorer, there is a delay before the other PC shows up and yet another delay when I select to browse that PC. If I close and go back I'll often get this error code and then there are time when I get the code on the first try. These PCs are running Windows 8.1 Pro and powered on 100% of the time. I noticed this nonsense while on Windows 7 as well.

Could not reconnect all network drives error at boot? I get it most of the time with a wired Ethernet connection. I've done a lot of searching and tried different things but nothing seems to work. This started a few months ago, was not there initially with Windows 8, 8.1 or 8.1.1.
With XP, you could do this to fix it:
Control Panel
Folder Options

Uncheck "Automatically search for network folders and printers"
This is no longer an option in Windows 8 (I think it disappeared with Vista).

As the title says, I'm getting a box saying "An unexpected error has occurred" whenever I try and access the properties window for my ethernet adapter. An unexpected power outage earlier in the day rendered my Windows 8 installation half messed up, leaving most of my drivers corrupt, so I had to attempt a refresh today, which solved most of my problems.
Unfortunately others like this have been cropping up since the refresh. I've looked for other possible solutions to this problem, and none have worked so far. Re-registering DLL files solved nothing, a system file check didn't do anything, and making sure I was in the correct user groups didn't solve anything either.

I need configuring file history. I want to have it store files on a shared folder in a local hard rive but I want that folder to be inaccessible to other computers on my home network.
Now its fairly easy to set up a shared folder on a local drive and store file history there but the problem is that other computers can see all my files. I tweaked the sharing permissions on my folder so I removed the 'Everyone' user and put in my user name (which is an admin) and set the permissions to full control. Despite setting the permissions to only my user account, other computers are still able to open the shared file history folder and view and edit its contents.
I can't disable file sharing all together because then it would defeat the purpose of what I am trying to do and also I have another computer on my network store its files on my computer through file history.

Delay in being able to access a network share? Upon going to Network and clicking on the desired computer, I get a network error; it cannot find the destination machine.
After about 30 seconds of trying and trying again, it lets me in.I go into Network:
Then I try again after a minute or so:
All my shares have their security set to allow full access to EVERYONE and are shared through your usual share and specify permission. I don't bother with Home group as this 30 second access denied routine makes the home group unusable.
I have a few other computers on the network and they all do the same thing to every other computer.

I use SkyDrive quite every time. For each file, I copy to my Windows explorer folder of SkyDrive, I have to individually right click each file and select Make Available online only. I want the explorer to do this for each and every file I copy to the folder so that I don't need to waste time to do it all by myself.

Having a strange issue with Onedrive. If I drag/drop files into my "local machine" onedrive folder it automatically syncs up with my onedrive account in the cloud. So the same files are both on my home system and in the cloud. That works. I can log on thru my browser at the onedrive site and log on, copy and download files...upload thru the browser and it will also show up on my local harddrive....so that works too.
The issue I'm having is if I use my metro tile screen, click on onedrive app, it opens up, I can see all the files in my onedrive account.....however if I right click while in app, then click upload it opens up my folder, I can pick the file I wish to upload and click "add to onedrive" nothing ever gets uploaded. No error message or anything, just nothing happens when using the app. No files ever show up or get uploaded. I can also pick a file using the onedrive app (from the cloud) and click download (to my local system), it allows me to pick the destination and hit OK, but I get an message " the file couldn't be saved" no matter where I decide to put it. So while onedrive is working for the most part if I bypass the windows 8 metro app, it is not working inside the app itself.

I currently am running windows 8 pro on my main computer, two days ago I had left it on for an hour or so and when I came back to it I had no internet conection and the error message I get says there is something wrong with the drivers.
I tried for a while to fix it but had no look. The conection im using is wired and the symbol in the corner has a small yellow triangle over it and says no internet access.
After getting fed up of trying to fix it I plugged in my old computer which is running windows 7 and the conection worked fine all night.
I turned on my computer today and it was working fine still and then after leaving my computer alone for an hour or so I returned to find the internet symbol in the corner with the same yellow triangle over it saying no connection and troubleshooting said something about no ip address.
The only thing I think my main computer was doing when I wasnt on it was updating AVG then when I returned it had no connection. My windows 7 computer also uses AVG but not sure if AVG has anything to do with the problem
Ive tried uninstalling avg and making sure other firewalls are off and also reinstalling drivers but had no luck.

I have been trying to remote into my Windows 8.1 desktop from outside my home network using the RDC program for Apple.
The basic setup from within the home network works fine. I turned on the port forwarding and DNS stuff on my ASUS router and that worked fine from within my homework network. When I go outside my home network, it get to the certificate message and then throws a tsl1_alert_internal_error and dies.
