Maintenance :: System Managed Paging File Seems Low

Jun 15, 2013

My son's Windows 8 laptop has 6 GB of RAM. His paging file resides entirely on the C: drive and is the "System managed size".

His paging file is set to 960MB. Doesn't that seem very low? It's even less than the recommended 4,067MB.

Seems to be quite large and recall when previously set to system manage the paging file was only about 2GB.

Maintenance :: Paging While Still 24GB Available RAM

Jun 15, 2014

Lately I've been having these annoying popups telling me I'm running out of memory, but I really don't understand it. I have 32GB of RAM and I'm currently using a little less than 8GB of it.

The popups don't indicate that I'm running out of virtual memory (paging file), but I do get system events saying e.g. Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: Watch_Dogs_3dm.exe (8104) consumed 3199815680 bytes, uTorrent.exe (4380) consumed 237621248 bytes, and explorer.exe (3992) consumed 148795392 bytes.

My pagefile is managed automatically and is about 4GB in size currently. With so much spare RAM, I really don't get why Windows is using my slow disk (3 disk stripe, not that slow, but still). I put in enough so I can run games without closing my virtual machines, browsers, etc. I barely ever use over 24GB so I still have plenty room for the occasional spike.

I know I can manually set my pagefile to 64GB if need be, but I bought RAM to be used. My disks should only be used for storage, not for paging.

Maintenance :: How To Create System Image Backup And Move Hidden System Partition

Nov 5, 2013

I am trying to create a system image backup and I keep getting this error message

[COLOR=#FF0000]'Threre is not enough disk space to create the volum shadow copy on storage location. Make sure that for all volume to be backup up, the minimum disk space required for shadow copy creation is available. this applies to both the backup storage destination and volume included in the backup. Minimum requirement for Volumes less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabyte of free space. for voulimes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended at least 1 gigabytes free of disk space on each volumes if volumes size is more than 1 gigabytes (0x80780119)"

I am backing it up to a external HDD with over a tb of free space but I understand its not letting me perform the backup because the hidden 100mb hidden system partition is full...if i create a larger partition how can I copy that system partition to it? if that is possible....

Maintenance :: Windows 7 File Recovery And File History Both Active?

Feb 9, 2013

I don't know how I did it but I got both Windows 7 File Recovery and Windows 8 File History active at the same time. I upgraded from Win 7 to 8 Pro and transferred settings so win 7 file recovery was already active, when I tried to turn on win 8 file recovery I got a message saying I cant because win 7 FR was active. So I deactivated win 7 FR then activated win 8 FR, for giggles I went back and turned on win 7 FR and it worked. Now I have both active, from what I have read this was not possible. Did I break my OS or am I just lucky?

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 File History File Duplication?

Oct 30, 2013

In Windows 8.0 File History, it had the nasty habit of duplicating your library files on your backup ( in my case, my external USB backup drive ( Replica 2 Terabyte ). By DUPLICATING, I mean they get copied over and over and over again... This happens to ALL of them, even though you have not touched the majority of them for YEARS. (File History is suppose to copy them over the FIRST time, then copy a new copy with a new name (old name plus date) if you edit the file in any way). I turned of file indexing on ALL my drives, except my C: drive, to see if that would stop it ( this is recommended in many threads on other sites ).

Task Scheduler - System Cannot Find The File Specified

Jan 4, 2014

I tried using a batch file to run ccleaner at log on. But it always takes forever when it cleans Firefox. So I made a batch file to just delete the Firefox temp folder. And I unchecked Firefox in ccleaner so ccleaner ignores Firefox.

Here's the batch file.

Code: RMDIR 5bngz3ew.default /S /Q

I put it in the task scheduler. When I run it it says it cant find the file specified (0x80070002). I set the task to run with highest privileges. But every time I run it it gives that error. I don't know why its giving an error when it deletes the folder. So it works fine. I just want to know why its producing an error.

Windows 8 BSOD NTFS File System

Jan 19, 2014

I've had my Sony Laptop for under a year now, and it was working alright (with the occasional problem such as BSODs), but today after having hibernated the computer (never shutting down/restarting) for a month (because I went on holiday), I finally was forced to shut down by Windows update. However, when I booted up again, it signed me into a temporary user account. This had happened to me before, so I didn't think much of it, I tried to do a system restore, but came up with the error: 0x80070005. I tried different restore points, but they all yielded the same results.

Then I tried doing an sfc /scannow, which said nothing was wrong. I also scheduled a chkdsk /f/r for boot. Unfortunately it got stuck on 28% for over an hour. So I turned the computer off. When I turned it back on, I was unable to sign in: "The user profile service failed the sign in user profile cannot be loaded". So I restarted the computer. This is where it got really bad.

As soon as the computer boots up, it shows the loading signal then instantly goes to the Windows 8 BSOD saying that there was a problem with NTFS File System.

Now each time I boot up, it does the exact same thing. What do I do?? I haven't had this laptop for long. The laptop is still under warranty, am I able to get it fixed under warranty.

Error - Need Permission From SYSTEM To Change This File

Apr 27, 2013

So My computer has been acting up. I downloaded a "free" antivirus that turned out to be a virus. It just slows my computer up and hasn't fried anything yet, However i was able to download AVG and stop any major issues from occurring. Now I am trying to delete said "free" antivirus, yet i keep getting this message. "Need permission from SYSTEM to make any changes to this file." I have no idea what that means especially considering I am the SYSTEM as far as I am concerned with this computer. Somehow my firewall and antivirus had been disabled months ago and I know I didn't do it. This was a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I have been fighting to keep my computer alive.

Activate ReFS (Resilient File System) In Windows 8

Jan 9, 2013

ReFS Activator_1.jpg

The program allows you to activate the ReFS (Resilient File System) in Windows 8. Supported versions of Windows 8 are RTM (build 9200), Release Preview (build 8400), Consumer Preview (build 8250), both 32- and 64-bits.

You are using this software at your own risk, we do not take responsibility for any damages to your system, but we do not believe it can harm anyone anyway. If you want to be able to remove the ReFS, before its activation, create a restore point.

Debugging :: BSOD Scanning Computer For Virus Now EFI File System Gone?

May 15, 2014

I was scanning my computer for virus's 2 days ago when the computer locked up. So I shut it down and restarted it. I got a BSOD saying NTFS_FILESYSTEM. I restarted the computer and same error. I then loaded up Parted Magic to run Clam AV and started that but when I went to look at the program Parted Magic I noticed that my EFI System Partition has no file system and is blackened out. I do have a Acronis backup unforturnatly it's 3 month's old but it's better than nothing. I also have tried using a Windows Recovery thumb drive to fix the startup issue. I chose the "Fix Startup Issues" option and it started to do something and said it would take hours but then all the sudden it restarted and when I tried to run the Startup fixer it said it couldnt do anything about it. Is there a way to rebuild that EFI System Partition? I would like to fix it but at least anything I use Parted Magic to get my personal documents and things onto a external drive for a backup and then do a fresh install.

System File Check - Corrupt Files Found But Unable To Repair

Aug 20, 2014

My laptop is running ok but I have noticed that certain programs have been taking a lot longer than usual to install/update (e.g. iTunes) but they always do. Then the last few days AVG Antivirus has been wanting to auto-update the software (not just the virus definitions) but each time it would freeze during the ''configuring'' step and subsequently cause every other program running to freeze and stop the opening of any other program - although I could still move the cursor so not a complete freeze if that makes sense.

So today I removed AVG with the removal tool and tried to do a fresh install but now I get a failure message immediately telling me ''MSI Engine: failed to initialize the package''.

How to go about fixing this and ran system file check which said corrupt files were found but it was unable to repair some of them. Here is the log:
