Jan 30, 2013

How to enable my 4GB Memory Ram on my Windows 8 32bit? When I check my system info..

4GB(2.92 usable)

Is anything here knows how to enale all 4gb memory as usable?

I'm really disappointed when i discover that this is how the result be when i upgraded my memory from 2gb to 4gb..

Otherwise the 1gb un-usable memory will going to be useless!

Maintenance :: Enable Direct3D Acceleration For 32bit Apps In Windows 8

Aug 28, 2014

The Direct3D acceleration for 32bit Windows applications is disabled. I need to enable this so that most games and Direct3D using Windows Store apps start working again.

How it went:

Previously, Microsoft WDDM v1.0 drivers were installed (from Windows Update) and the system had no problems. Everything was working, well, almost everything. That was when I installed Minecraft. As I launched it, an error popped up saying 'pixel format not accelerated'. I researched on that and found out that it was an OpenGL issue. I downloaded and launched GPU Caps Viewer and found out OpenGL v1.1 on my system, whereas Minecraft needed 1.4 or more to run. I further researched and found that the Microsoft's WDDM v1.0 drivers supported the maximum OpenGL v1.1 (well, at least for my GPU). However on Intel's official site, it said my GPU CAN support OpenGL v1.4. And also on Minecraft forums someone said that Intel's drivers were needed for older GPU's in order for Minecraft to work. So I looked at the Download Center, but the latest drivers for my GPU were for Windows 7 32 and 64bit not Windows 8 [URL] .....

Upon thinking that at least Windows 7 drivers would work on Windows 8 if not XP's or Vista's, I downloaded the Windows 7 x64 drivers. They installed without an issue. Restarted my PC. Checked GPU Cap Viewer again, and voila! OpenGL version 1.4 was displayed. I re-installed Minecraft and it worked like a charm! Also checked another OpenGL animation software Blender and it was also working . But then I noticed something. Some Windows Store games and apps were exiting as soon as opened them. Also all the desktop games I have e.g Warcraft showed some Direct3D or DirectX related error. All of these applications were 32bit.

I then opened up "dxdiag".The 64bit version said "Enabled" for all three as you can see below:

But when I opened the 32bit one, first it said this:

And then on the display tab, Direct3D acceleration was disabled:

What have I tried:

1- As seen from some tutorials around the web, I went to Advanced Display settings but no troubleshoot tab was found:

So yeah, no moving the slider to right side to give 'Full' Direct3D/Hardware acceleration. Those XP days are long gone.

2- As stated above, I have updated the video drivers to 'Intel's' latest version. ( Also tried the second latest version just in case).

3- Updated the DirectX through web setup. It now says that newer or equivalent version is already installed. Also installed DirectX 9.0c (June 2010) all to no avail.

4- As referred by many people, I have checked this link: direct3D acceleration is not available in Windows 7 - Microsoft Community (look at the answer)
There is no "SoftwareOnly" registry key that I could change from 0 to 1.

5- Note that this problem persist only in 32bit Direct3D using applications NOT 64bit. The driver works well for the 64bit apps.

Now from what is stated above, it is clear that this issue caused by Intel's driver but it may also be a Windows problem too. And I think I am currently running out of options here. WDDM drivers are nice but wouldn't it be great if you could have OpenGL v1.4 along with Direct3D enabled? So I could run things like Minecraft. As a side note, a year ago I had Windows 7 32bit installed having latest Intel's drivers and with Direct3D enabled without an issue. Now this problem either could be because of Windows 8 or drivers.

Maintenance :: Memory Usage Is High At 78%?

Jan 3, 2014

I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.

I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.

What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communications Service...I think it's not related to any process by itself, but its nearly ALWAYS at 100%.

Finally, memory usage is also pretty high at 78%, but I guess this may be because 4Gb is not too much for this computer. I'm hoping to upgrade to 8 soon. Out of the 10 processes consuming most memory, 9 is Google Chrome (how's that even possible?).

Maintenance :: Physical Memory Usage Never Exceed To 31%

Jun 28, 2013

No matter what I try to do normally my physical memory usage never seems to exceed 31% even if I'm doing something that means the processor is flat-out. However, I gave the system stressing tool 'HeavyLoad' a whirl and it did deplete all the memory (eventually), but in terms of whether I'm watching 5 HD videos or working on Photoshop it just will not budge.

Maintenance :: 85% RAM Usage On Idle - Large Cached Memory?

May 13, 2014

It seems as if my computer is using way too much RAM for some reason. I currently have 6GB of RAM installed. As soon as I start my computer up, I'm greeted with this warning:

So I decided to open up task manager and see exactly how much RAM I'm really using:

No process is using up any amount of RAM to come close the above number. The most RAM using is 70mb or so from Google Chrome while typing this post. Clicking on the performance tab of task manager gives me this information:

I haven't downloaded anything recently. I had this exact problem a few weeks ago and a system restore fixed it but I'm not wanting to wait on the computer to restore again or for this problem to just come back again. I'm running Windows 8 on a Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332.

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 High Memory Usage From Startup

Mar 7, 2014

I have a new laptop windows 8.1 (64bit) 8gb RAM i7 processor which should be sufficient for the software I use. However on start-up my memory is already at around 80% and stays like that.

The most seems to be caused by servicehost (network restricted) (11) another program is IAStorDataSvc (32bits) even after i updated Intel Rapid Storage it still seems to take some memory. (My system settings are in Dutch but I guess it's pretty much the same as in English).

What could be the cause of the massive memory use?

High Memory Usage - 7.2 Of 7.9GB Of Ram Is In Use

Ocassionally my computer will become so slow it's almost unresponsive, when I check task manager it says 7.2 of 7.9GB of ram is in use. Even rebooting it, it will come back with high memory usage, sometimes rebooting it, it goes back to normal

Most of the time it is normal and fast, I can have Chrome open and have 10 pages open and usage is about 1GB, but what causes this to happen occasionally when I'm just surfing the internet?

I have Win 8, Intel 4670K, Z87, 8GB DDR1333.

High Memory Usage While Idle?

Apr 7, 2013

I just bought a brand new Lenovo U310 Touch and so far I absolutely love it. The only thing I noticed that struck me as odd is that when I look in Task Manager it shows that I am using around 60% of my available memory, but there are no processes taking up anywhere near that much. I also have a desktop I built and its memory usage is nominal when idle so I know this isn't a "standard feature" or anything.

EDIT (5/4/13) - Finally figured it out, it was the ExpressCache program, used a couple tutorials to isolate where the memory leak was and from there I found it was in the running files of ExpressCache, I just went to Uninstall Programs, hit "Repair" on the program and now everything is all nice and happy, no more memory leak.

Hardware Drivers :: How To Reduce Hardware-reserved Memory Usage

Jun 8, 2013

I used HP Pavilion G4-2216TU, 2Gb DDR3 RAM, Intel HD 4000, and Windows 8 Pro 32 bit, x64 processor.

The usable memory only 935 Mb, fewer than hardware-reserved that take 1,1 Gb of memory.

Is that normal ? that hardware-reserved took more memory rather than usable?

I've check the BIOS, no remapping setting that I can use for. can I remapping / reduce those hardware-reserved usage in such other way ?or how can i increase my usable memory close to installed RAM ?

I've not done any change or upgrade since I bought that new laptop, and its seem memory-load is too busy (I've check with the performance-monitor).

Maintenance :: RAM Usage Never More Than 80%?

Jun 18, 2014

I'm playing watch dogs which needs 6GB ram on a 4GB ram PC.

I run compact tray meter and one thing I notice is that the ram usage never goes more than 80%. In fact, whenever it loads stuff from the HDD ( I could see HDD usage 100% and stuttering in my game), RAM usage decrease to 77-78%. VRAM is kind of healthy at only 52% of 2GB used.

I want to know why not all 100% of my RAM is used? Hardware reserve is only 145MB.

And why is the minimum system requirements for watch dogs a GTX460? I mean, I got a 645M, I can play it, my friends with a 640 and 630m can play it fine, our GPU temperature is just 80"C even after hours of playing.

I have Windows 8.1 x64 installed. In the task manager, it shows me that 35% Memory is used. Now, when I add up all the Memory MB's within the task manager it goes to around 1100MB maximum.. On my machine, I have 8GB RAM and it also shows the same in the system about window since I have the 64-bit windows installed.

Doing a quick calculation of (1200/8000)*100 = 15..So, my system memory should display 15% used. Then why is it still showing around 37%? I have also tried running virus scans but have no infections as such... Also, one of the biggest memory hoggers is the 'Service Host: Local System'.

Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 - CPU Usage Always TOTALS 100%

Mar 6, 2014

I've been on 8.1 for some time now and just noticed that my CPU usage is always showing up in Task Manager as 100%, no matter what combination of programs are using it. No single program seems to be the culprit for hogging it. The usage values bounce around like crazy, but the column total is stuck at 100%.

I don't notice any lag or slowness as a result like I should if the CPU WERE at 100% load. It's an older Core i7 Quad in a Dell Precision M6500 laptop.

I am quite OCD about things running in the background unnecessarily and have disabled a lot of startup items.

I put a screen cap here, but it isn't perhaps a great example since SnagIt APPEARS to be hogging the CPU to do the capture, but I can assure you, it is not this intensive. If I quit that, some other random process just takes 30%+ and others keep filling in the gaps so that the total is always 99-100%. Very strange. If NOTHING else is going on, Task Manager will shoot up to near 100%.

Is Windows 8 supposed to have a System Idle Process?

The other thing is that this machine's fans are NOT running full blast to keep heat down like they would if it were under full load. Is something just not reporting right?

Maintenance :: High RAM Usage Not Adding Up

Apr 7, 2014

I'm using the same programs as my old system which also had the same amount of ram (2x4GB 1600MHZ) and the usage was very low.

This PC was only built 4 days ago the current ram is 8GB (2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance Pro, 2133MHz, CAS 11-11-11-30, 1.5V

The first two days that the PC was built I noticed the idle usage at 88% and if i ran a program it would hit 100% and pretty much freeze the PC so it's not an error in the display.

Mobo is MSI Z87-GD65 and I'm running Windows 8.1 with no updates.

Probably not anything to do with it, but i'm running beta amd video drivers and it's showing my card as 5GB, I'm planning to uninstall beta drivers and run updates. Just wanted to know of others opinions.

Maintenance :: Windows 8 / 8.1 100% Disk Usage?

Apr 27, 2014

I encountered a problem a few weeks ago after I refreshed my laptop when it started refreshing the desktop constantly to the point where I couldn't do anything. After the refresh, the desktop was back to normal, though I noticed my disk usage in the task manager was constantly at 100%. I've been troubleshooting this problem by upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1, I've run chkdsk.exe /f /r, I defragged the disk, ran a virus scan, etc. The only thing that is disabling the service 'superfetch' and/or 'Windows search', though the problem can still arise after doing so. Every now and then the disk usage goes back to it's regular 2-8% but then randomly shoots back up to 70-85-99-100%. It's causing some occasional slowdown.

Here's a screen cap of my resource monitor when it's at 100%:
