Maintenance :: High RAM Usage Not Adding Up
Apr 7, 2014
I'm using the same programs as my old system which also had the same amount of ram (2x4GB 1600MHZ) and the usage was very low.
This PC was only built 4 days ago the current ram is 8GB (2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance Pro, 2133MHz, CAS 11-11-11-30, 1.5V
The first two days that the PC was built I noticed the idle usage at 88% and if i ran a program it would hit 100% and pretty much freeze the PC so it's not an error in the display.
Mobo is MSI Z87-GD65 and I'm running Windows 8.1 with no updates.
Probably not anything to do with it, but i'm running beta amd video drivers and it's showing my card as 5GB, I'm planning to uninstall beta drivers and run updates. Just wanted to know of others opinions.

I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communications Service...I think it's not related to any process by itself, but its nearly ALWAYS at 100%.
Finally, memory usage is also pretty high at 78%, but I guess this may be because 4Gb is not too much for this computer. I'm hoping to upgrade to 8 soon. Out of the 10 processes consuming most memory, 9 is Google Chrome (how's that even possible?).

I bought new lenovo ideapad Z400 touch 2 month ago with Windows 8. Last week i upgraded to win 8.1 and recover back to win 8 , since then i have some problems.
When I have the Task Manager open, I notice the disk usage climbing to 50, 75, 100 also the CPU , even though there's scarcely any disk activity going on, the laptop's fan is working harder and very noisy , my processor's speed and heat are jumping high without any programs on.
I tried almost anything, checked for viruses, disabled unnecessary startup programs, clean boot, but it still the same.

Today I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. For some reason, after upgrading, my hard disk usage is always hovering at around 60% usage and my CPU usage is always hovering at around 50%. This is when the PC is idle. When I was using 7, the disk would rarely jump over 30% usage and the CPU would never go above 7% when idle. The sound of the hard disk constantly working away is doing my head in, not to mention it's at around 50 degrees as opposed to 45 degrees previously.

In window 7 it uses maximum 2gb of ram when transfering big file, say an example a movie size of 8gb. now in windows 8 it seems it uses 6-8GB its as if file is transfered into ram first and then slowly copy into targeted disk. just what is going on here and why microsoft decided to do this? if power goes out then all the files is gone and the entire process is actually slower imho.
Is there anyway to disable this? or revert it back to similar what 7 had?

Basically when I start my laptop everything is good for a while when suddenly the CPU usage goes high because of System Interrupts (~25%) and System (~12%). I have tried using LatencyMon to track down the problem and it used to give me alerting messages but now it gives me messages that are all green and nice ("Your system appears to be handling(...)").
NOTE: My drivers ARE up-to-date, but I am not sure my BIOS is. I don't really know how to update the BIOS though, it's a really weird model I have here, that has become obsolete.
*update1* Upon thinking that it might be the wireless driver or the network driver I disabled both, but it didn't drop the CPU usage
*update2*Now I get disconnected from the internet randomly... it may be the wi-fi driver after all

So I booted up my pc this afternoon, but notice with my monitoring software, my cpu activity was going nuts.
I opened task manager, and sorted by cpu usage, and " Store Broker" was using app 35% of my cpu just sitting at desktop. I ended it in task manager - what the heck is this and why would it be running?

Over the past couple of weeks I have been getting high disk usage on my computer, causing it to run extremely slowly.
Just after I took the attached screenshot, my System went down to around 6MB/s and the "Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)" jumped to around 16MB/s Looking in resource monitor the main things causing the high read speed are:
'rundll32.exe' and 'ccsvchst.exe' and one just called 'System'

I recently installed Windows 8.1 on my Inspiron 7520 and I noticed that during the startup the disk usage is around 98/99% of my Samsung SSD 840 Pro 120gb.
I saw a lot of posts where the users complain that, during this high usage of the disk, apps don't open, the system freezes around 5 minutes and after that, there are random high usages, even on idle. But in my case this high usage lasts only few seconds (around 30s), I can open some apps with no problems and never happens again on idle, only if I restart Explorer.exe. If I restart it, it happens all again.
My question is : Is it normal? The high usage only on startup? My only worry is mess up with my SSD due this usage.
On Performance Monitor, the process which writes a lot is System. I disabled every 3rd party app on startup.

I have a new laptop windows 8.1 (64bit) 8gb RAM i7 processor which should be sufficient for the software I use. However on start-up my memory is already at around 80% and stays like that.
The most seems to be caused by servicehost (network restricted) (11) another program is IAStorDataSvc (32bits) even after i updated Intel Rapid Storage it still seems to take some memory. (My system settings are in Dutch but I guess it's pretty much the same as in English).
What could be the cause of the massive memory use?

My task manager is showing an unusually high CPU usage by the system, anywhere between 20-30% when the computer is idling. I've run the sfc /scannow utility and it found some corruptions, which were then fixed by the DISM utility. However the task manager is still showing that super high CPU usage and no amount of restarts is changing anything. I've attached an image of my task manager.

I have high usage on my laptop lenovo g580 using windows 8. check task manager and I see cpu memory and disk fluctuating up and down to 3% can go up to 100 at times. When I open google chrome. Watch video or play games. I hear my fan turn on and i think my hard drive and i check task manager and i see the problem happening. I did a virus scan and searched everywhere online. I couldn't seem to find a solution. When I am not using the pc its a stable 3 percent but my memory is at 37 which i barely have anything installed but 1 game and a google chrome.

I'm setting up a new laptop running Windows 8.1. I keep finding the Windows Media Network Sharing Service keeps starting up when the PC is otherwise idle and running at 90% + CPU load for long periods. There is no demand for media streaming when the process is running.
What is this process for? Can I disable it or reconfigure it to reduce the CPU load?

As soon as I start an application (Cadence Allegro PCB Designer 16.5 but I don't think it's relevant) my CPU usage gets to the roof and stays there long after I killed the application and I believe I every associated process. The CPU usage is so high that the battery will be drained after about 45 minutes (It usually last about 3 hours).
According to my task manager the responsible is "Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)". As a matter of fact, preventing the executable from accessing the network sort of solves the issue. I don't believe I need that executable to access the network but I'd like to understand what kind of network service can consume that much CPU (was actually affraid of overheating) and to know if there's a more appropriate way to solve this.

So I've been having this problem for days now, two tasks named Service Host: Local Service(Network Restricted) and Service Host: Local Service(No Network) keep using up ALL of my cpu, theyre usually accompanied by any app I have open, so my task manager is basically like this for example:
Service Host: Local Service(Network Restricted) 40% cpu usage
Skype 29% cpu usage
Service Host: Local Service(No Network) 26% cpu usage
If I close skype, the usage goes down to 2 percent for a brief second and then any other app I have open launches up instead of skype and uses up all of my cpu.
I've tried several virus scans and I've done my best to clean up the system but I still have this problem

Ocassionally my computer will become so slow it's almost unresponsive, when I check task manager it says 7.2 of 7.9GB of ram is in use. Even rebooting it, it will come back with high memory usage, sometimes rebooting it, it goes back to normal
Most of the time it is normal and fast, I can have Chrome open and have 10 pages open and usage is about 1GB, but what causes this to happen occasionally when I'm just surfing the internet?
I have Win 8, Intel 4670K, Z87, 8GB DDR1333.

I just bought a brand new Lenovo U310 Touch and so far I absolutely love it. The only thing I noticed that struck me as odd is that when I look in Task Manager it shows that I am using around 60% of my available memory, but there are no processes taking up anywhere near that much. I also have a desktop I built and its memory usage is nominal when idle so I know this isn't a "standard feature" or anything.
EDIT (5/4/13) - Finally figured it out, it was the ExpressCache program, used a couple tutorials to isolate where the memory leak was and from there I found it was in the running files of ExpressCache, I just went to Uninstall Programs, hit "Repair" on the program and now everything is all nice and happy, no more memory leak.

Lately I have noticed a high disk usage with the computer using task manager. Things that cause this spike is conducting normal operations just as opening an application or the web-browser.
I do not recall seeing any disk usage on task manager for the past few weeks except yesterday (perhaps I did but I do not remember). It appears to me as if those application are using the HDD as RAM even though there is space on the 8GB memory. So I am not entirely sure.
I would like to know if it is normal for applications such as Chrome to be using the disk space? And if so, what may be causing high disk usage?

I've noticed that when I leave my pc for some time and the screen savers come on, then the screens go blank (my machine doesn't sleep or hibernate) when I use the pc again I can see that during the time the monitors had turned off, the CPU usage was at or above 50% ? When I use the computer after that, watching movies, photoshop etc the cpu usage is much less than that!

I found out how to add a task to the Automatic Maintenance that runs each morning. I use Geekzone's EPG collector to fill in the guide on Media Centre and I though it would be nice for it to run as part of Automatic Maintenance rather than wake the computer up again later to do it's thing.
Here's how:
Create an XML files in notepad and paste this in...
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>
<Task version="1.4" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/windows/2004/02/mit/task">
<RegistrationInfo>
<Date>2013-02-01T19:34:03.9529687</Date>
<Author>johnofe-laptopJohnOfE</Author>
<Description>EPG Loader</Description>
[Code] ....
Save the file then in Task Scheduler, import the XML and it will appear. Edit it from there further if you want.
I got this from exporting a task that runs as part of Automatic Maintenance and edited it to suit.
the thing is, I still don't know how it works! I haven't been able to create a schedules task from scratch that runs as part of Automatic Maintenance.
Other than plagiarising existing tasks to get what I want, how it's really done?
I have what I want, and it works great being able to run all the things I want all at the same time at 3AM each day, as part of Windows' ritual. Even better, if I disable it from waking the computer, everything runs when I'm logged in and Idle. It's fantastic.

supply the required information to allow me to increase RAM from 4Gb to 8Gb. My 64 bit PC has 4Gb of RAM made up from 2 of the 4 slots containing Samsung Size 2048 MBytes Max Bandwith PC3-10700 (667 MHz). I would like to increase RAM to 8Gb and would like to know if I can use spare slots 3 & 4 and add 2 x 2Gb Modules - thus making a total of 4 x 2Gb = 8Gb total. Or is it possible to use slot 3 only and add a 4Gb module? Would adding memory require alteration of the BIOS?

I recently got a new laptop, first thing I did was delete most bloatware and such, and there really isn't a whole lot remaining other then OS and drivers. However, when checking the taskmanager recently I noticed it using 80-90% of the RAM. While being under very little use. Only thing was chrome taking up 200-300MB.
The laptop is a samsung 9 series, with 8 GB RAM, so I can't see how it should be having so much troubles when just running on lowgear. I checked and it does have 8GB RAM registered, and the performance view shows it using 6GB of 7,6. Considering there are plenty of windows 8s laptops with just 4GB I couldn't imagine this being normal?
Adding together what is shown by the task manager wont get me higher then 1 GB at most as far as RAM usage, is there any tool giving better information about what is all used? Could it be the quickboot system of samsung that eats up some or some sort of reserve that will let go of some RAM if other programs demand it?

I'm playing watch dogs which needs 6GB ram on a 4GB ram PC.
I run compact tray meter and one thing I notice is that the ram usage never goes more than 80%. In fact, whenever it loads stuff from the HDD ( I could see HDD usage 100% and stuttering in my game), RAM usage decrease to 77-78%. VRAM is kind of healthy at only 52% of 2GB used.
I want to know why not all 100% of my RAM is used? Hardware reserve is only 145MB.
And why is the minimum system requirements for watch dogs a GTX460? I mean, I got a 645M, I can play it, my friends with a 640 and 630m can play it fine, our GPU temperature is just 80"C even after hours of playing.
