Installed windows 8 today, took some time to get used to it but finally managed to all my programs working again. When you set taskbar icons to never combine, they become really low-res and ugly, and the system tray icons are always like this.
I always used Never combine option for the taskbar because I really prefer it that way. I am running a 1920x1080 resolution.
For some reason when I started up my laptop recently, all of the icons on both the taskbar and the desktop have turned invisible/disappear completely and I am unaware has to how to fix it. I have put a picture in the attachments that shows what the "icons" look like when they are highlighted and non-highlighted.
I've had windows 8 installed yesterday first on the desktop i couldn't open any window except of the explorer. After applying windows updates only the firefox window opens others just blink in the taskbar but can see nothing.
There are some times when I close a ModernUI app using a method that may not be common, in this case, the Windows Task Manager.
So I would load a ModernUI app, for example... PC Settings. I would then load the Windows Task Manager (the built-in one, not a third-part task manager such as Process Explorer by SysInternals). I would then find the program's task and then right-click on it and choose "End task". The full-screen window disappears as you would expect it to disappear but here's where the bug shows, the icon for PC Settings still stays in the Task Bar. I have to hover over the icon with my mouse, let Aero Peek appear, and then click the X button there to have the icon disappear from the Task Bar.
This also happens when I close an app when the app is windowed using ModernMix.
Sometimes I have to close an app this way because it locked up. I mentioned PC Settings because this seems to be an app that leaves its icon behind on the Task Bar when you force close the task in Task Manager.
This doesn't always happen, it seems that at random this bug will happen. It's like the taskbar isn't informed of the closure of the ModernUI app.
Some of my hidden icons on the task bar have extended menus in them. So I will right click on avast and then in that menu is an arrow for a submenu under update. I click on that submenu and it displays to the right and off the screen.
Was never an issue with windows 7. If it would extend off the screen it would move the submenu off to the left of the original menu. I have classic shell running as well, would that be the cause of the issue? Or is it a windows 8 thing?
I'm working with an HP ElitePad, a 10" Win 8 tablet with no mouse/keyboard. One of the pieces of software I'm working with is only accessable via right-clicking (press and hold) its icon in the taskbar and selecting to launch it.
The issue I'm having is that the icons are very small and I need to get this working for an end user who would endlessly be missing it.
How to increase the size of the icons? All I can find so far is the checkmark in the options to make them smaller.
My "Notification Area Icons" was not working right, so I opened it and checked the box "show all icons and notifications on the task bar" and it did.... Now my task-bar is crowded with all these icons and so I must put them back. The problem is, I have tried clicking all over the task bar but can't find the tool/option to do it.
The icons on the taskbar at the bottom of my screen become distorted. They'll generate copies of themselves, overlap other icons, and the start menu button disappears. Whenever I try to click an icon, it opens the icon to its left, as if the mouse needs to be calibrated. When I open the start menu, every time I scroll my mouse across a shortcut, it disappears. Poof. Just like that. I scroll my mouse over the icons a few more times, and usually, they'll come back, but if I scroll again, they disappear once more. Thus, I'm not able to open any programs from the start menu. Additionally, my background (which I normally have cycling through a folder of wallpapers) goes completely black.
This happens without warning; sometimes I'm playing video games and it happens when I alt-tab, sometimes I'm browsing the internet and it happens randomly, once I was just looking at my screen without running any programs or tasks and it happened. It will fix itself anywhere from a span of 2 minutes to half an hour.
In the lower right corner of my screen, there used to be 1 icon on the taskbar and if I clicked on it, a whole series of icons appeared above the taskbar. I have done something accidentally that puts all of the icons on the taskbar. There must be some command to consolidate taskbar icons or hide taskbar icons but Windows 8.1 has hidden them.

When I don't use my taskbar (When I'm using a program or AFK), stuff appears in my taskbar. First it's usually a folder (like a folder would appear in Windows Explorer, sometimes a bunch open up (stacked). Then application icons open (not actual applications, but what I associate with blank applications. When I click on anything on the taskbar, they disappear. When I woke up this morning, there were so many my computer was getting slow, and I spent over $1,000 on this 11 months ago. They appear over time (i.e. one after another, not all at once), so they build up after a while. Occasionally one will stack as if a second instance of it is occurring. In the picture, the stack of application picture has them all flat. It does that to them after you hover over them (and switch between them) for a while.
My laptop has an HD screen, 1920x1080 to be exact. Some of my desktop icons are out of focus and blurry, but others aren't. At first I assumed that those icons were not compatible with an HD screen or something, but then some of them fixed themselves. Others are still blurry.
I use start 8 on both my windows 8.1 desktop and my tablet. My internet speeds were okay, but I wanted more. Based on the speed tests that I ran, it appeared to me that I was on Comcast's performance starter getting download speeds of 7.37mbps and uploads of 15.65. So I called Comcast to see about an upgrade. The tech that I spoke with stated that I already had the faster that they offer. He asked me how many icons did I have near the start button, I had 5, he told me to unpin them from the taskbar and my speeds went to DL - 57.48, the upload stayed pretty much the same 15.64.
So I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on my Toshiba Satellite P75-A7200 laptop. I was previously running Windows 8, 64 bit and primarily just using the Desktop mode. I immediately noticed that the 1920x1080 resolution on Windows 8.1 made everything 10-15% smaller.
Ultimately I decided to refresh back to Windows 8, but the resolution issues remained. I've tried scaling to 125% but that's too large.
i know 1080 can't physically fit in a 720 resolution. The reason I ask is because my Vizio Blu-ray/Internet player automatically detects the display as 1920x1080 (the TV allows this, showing the resolution box in the corner and the picture being nice and crisp. It looks pixelated and letters are jagged in 720p).
My computer, however, only detects the TV in it's native resolution of 1360 x 768 (or was it 1366?). If my blu-ray player can pull it off, what is limiting my computer from doing the same? (The option to go to 1080 isn't available and a custom resolution in the Nvidia CP looks downright awful)
Just got a new Toshiba laptop and plugged it into my Emerson 32" tv/monitor and the top, sides and bottom expand beyond the scope of the screen. I have Windows 8 and have adjusted the screen resolution from the highest to the lowest but it does not make a difference.
1. Can't use snap apps as i've max 1280*1024 resolution..no solution?
2. I've xp on my pc... & i've purchased this upgrade using my brother's laptop.... now i've installed win8pro in my pc. So my question is will my bother can face ny problem regarding his windows 7??? will he receive any multiple notification kind of stuff??
I recently updated to Windows 8.1 (64-bit), and I immediately noticed that my resolution had taken a strange turn. Everything except the taskbar seems to be a lower resolution than before. This suspicion was only strengthened when I launched a game that I had running in 1440x900 windowed, and it didn't fit properly on the screen. I checked my display settings and used printscreen to check the resolution and both said 1920x1080, but when I used Puush to take a desktop screenshot, it came out as 1536x864, whereas before installing 8.1, desktop screenshots came out as 1920x1080. I tried changing the resolution and changing it back, but I'm still having the issue.
I have a Samsung 500t and after clean install 8.1 i notice the camera app does not hv any resolution setting so now my 8 mpixel front cam is limited to 2mpixel. wtf?? how can ms f up even such a basic thing? I mean if this is the way Ms is going about doing bizniz its no wonder they are losing to android. this setting was present in 8.0. iwas hoping for better camera app like the ability to turn flash on off on demand but of course instead of improving its regression...
I have a Windows 8.1 Pro, and Intel HD Graphics 4200 and Nvidia GT630M 2GB. But How I can get a smaller resolution than 1366 x 768. (So Like 1200 etc, etc..)
I have a gateway NE56R41u. With that aside, today i played the sims 3 when it has a warning about my graphics card or whatever, so i went to my screen resolution to see if i can fix the problem. Unfortunately, the place where i can choose what my resolution is greyed out, so i cannot change a thing. Heres a picture .....
I have a laptop with a 3200 x 1800 screen and the toolbars and menus of Illustrator and Photoshop are nearly illegible due to their minuscule size. Indesign displays normally, as does Lightroom.
On the adobe forums, two entries - Adobe Community: Photoshop CC on a High DPI display on Windows 8.1 and Adobe Community: Photoshop CC / Windows 8.1 HiDPI / Retina scaling support - suggest this is due to Microsoft not supplying required APIs (whatever these are...).
3200 x 1800 is still new, but over four months have passed since the posts on the adobe forums and the problem endures. Surely a giant such as Microsoft should already have that loophole closed? It is quite astounding that such an issue should even exist in the first place.
I installed 8 because when I first tried it I loved it, and realized that it was WAAAY faster than 7 in my usual routines and boot/shutdown times. I also like the new start menu, it's very refreshing and user-friendly (although I admit, in some aspects, it can actually be inconvenient). But anyway, on with the problem...
After a fresh install of 8, on my ASUS N53Jq, I tried to do the thing I do the most on my PC at the moment: game recordings on my HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition.
Everything, technically, went fine and the recordings were as good as they were when recorded with 7...however, due to these recordings I did, I noticed that now my PC only has two resolution settings: 1366 x 768 and 1024 x 768. And yes, I have the latest driver for my GPU...
Before I had many settings, including 1280 x 720 which is very useful for me to output into my PVR (so I can actually get a 60fps video...). I had to go to my nvidia control panel and add 720p as a custom resolution setting, which worked I guess but this is scaring me a little now...
Is this normal? Does 8 only set highest and lowest resolution? I'm betting it doesn't, and it's my PC thats the problem.
