Aug 24, 2013I have a 2GB GeForce 640GT video card. It has 2GB onboard and windows 8 is using an additional 2GB of ram for it. I don't do gaming or heavy rendering. Occasionally I use google earth and a few other 3d mapping apps. I don't see how any of these need 4GB of ram to do this. This 2GB of system memory is 25% of my entire system memory. This card, in an older PC used no system memory under Windows 7.
How can I reclaim this ram? If I cannot, and add more ram will it take even more of that?
nVidia says this is a windows issue and not a driver issue but I cannot find anywhere in windows to tune or change this.

Graphic Cards :: Can't Install Any Nvidia Driver (various Errors)
May 18, 2014Yesterday I was playing Dota 2 when suddenly I got a black screen and "display driver has stopped working and has recovered."
Right after, I tried to open the game again. There was no way of getting it working.
Any other game was also not working. The first thing I did was, of course, trying to reinstall the driver.
I tried to install the lastest driver (337.50 beta) and I got only "installer has failed". I also tried with many other older drivers and such, with no result.
Other things I tried:
Clean install (from custom install options)Hard clean install (Deleting all nvidia files before)Display Driver Uninstaller safe mode + reboot and install (same error)Install in safe mode (installer error)Register again WMI files (nothing changed). Take ownership of various folders containing drivers (nothing changed)Directly install INF files using devmgmt (gives error code 28) Changing some registry values regarding vbscript that fixed it for other people. Use Windows Update. "1 update was not installed" + error 80070002sfc /scannowRollback from devmgmtRestore to a early system point where it was working (couldn't restore, no matter what point I choose)
Nothing worked. It just won't install. Now I'm stuck with Microsoft base driver and can't play anything.

Event viewer shows nothing.
My system specs: CPU-Z Validator 4.0
I think it's probably a miracle if I get this working without refresh/reinstall Windows.

Nov 2, 2013Once I have updated driver for NVidia, Wn 8.1 does not start. Entering Safe Mode I could uninstall the update and everything goes back to normal.

Oct 11, 2013I have a notebook pc that comes with windows 7 from factory. I would like to install windows 8 in my machine. It has integrated intel hd graphics chip and separate nvidia geforce 420m graphic card. I heard switchable graphics are not working fine with windows 8. Is that true? BTW my system manufacturer isn't providing drivers that compatible with windows 8. Whatever windows 8 upgrade assistant says already installed drivers also compatible with windows 8 and individual hardware manufactures has windows 8 compatible drivers. So, what should I do? Windows 8 upgrade is useless for me?

Graphic Cards :: Cannot Install Nvidia GTS 450 Card No Output To Monitor
Jan 13, 2014So I recently bought a new computer. I was using the GTS 450 on the old one no problem not even a month ago. I have attempted to install it on my new pc. Switched out to a Thermaltake TR2 600W PSU which is operating just fine. I placed the video card into the primary pci slot and powered it with the 6-pin connector. Put everything back together and started her up. PC turns on fine, with even the fan going on the video card. But no video output. I'm stuck. What can I do? The drivers won't install themselves without the hardware.

Jun 5, 2014I will try to post a dump file the next chance I have in getting into safe mode. I have an Asus CM6870-CA010S with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 card. It has been running like a dream since I got it in April, then I performed the 8.1 update, and innocently updated the drivers. Bad plan. For the past week I've fallen into the labyrinth of uninstalling the card, subsequent iterations of the drivers, clearing registries, performed the "Refresh," all after reading the forums here, on Nvidia's boards, anywhere I can get logical info.
I finally found what I thought was the perfect recipe, uninstalling totally in safe mode, deleting the folders orphaned from uninstalls, cleaning the registry, disabling Window's automatic downloads for drivers and hardware... etc. I had solid uptime for an hour, and I'm not a gamer, and hadn't yet tested my main objectives- Photoshop and Premiere. But HD video was great, and I finally thought I had it licked. Then, black screen. I have no BSODs. The system seems to shut down so fast that it doesn't have time to make dump files, and WhoCrashed.exe keeps pointing to nvlddmkm.sys as the culprit when a dump is made, with either pagefile or IRQL not less or equal errors. I'm so done.
After trying virtually every solid recommendation I can find, I'm about to throw in the towel and either get a whole other brand of graphics card, or take it to the super expensive judgmental hipster repair shop. This post is my last hope, and I'll try to get a dump file the next chance it gives me enough uptime to collect one- and getting into Safe Mode with F8 is seemingly very random.

Oct 19, 2013I bought myself a Radeon HD 7770 a few months back to replace an old GeForce 9600GT. A few weeks after installing the AMD card, I was going through my programs cleaning out old files and decided to remove all the Nvidia stuff. I removed the drivers and stuff and upon reboot, my computer would no longer boot to the desktop. I ended up having to use system restore to get the computer working again...
Fast forward to yesterday. I upgraded from Windows 8 Pro with Media Center to Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center, and I started experiencing the same problem listed here: "Win 8.1 desktop right click takes 15 seconds!" I tried the same solution that was found and it did not work for me. My guess is it had something to do with the Nvidia driver software still being installed on my computer. So I again attempted to remove the drivers. At this point I couldn't even remove the Nvidia software as nothing happened when I pressed the uninstall button. I ended up having to reinsert the Nvidia card, and reinstall the drivers, in order to uninstall the drivers. After I restarted and reinstalled the AMD card, the computer, like before would no longer boot to the desktop. All I would get was a mouse pointer that would appear and disappear every couple of seconds and a Number lock button on the keyboard that would be turning on and off at the same interval. If I reinsert the Nvidia card the problem goes away, but obviously I don't want to keep the old card in my computer.
My question is: Why would the computer boot with the Nvidia card when the Nvidia drivers are uninstalled and yet not boot with the AMD card when the AMD drivers ARE installed?

Jul 23, 2014I plugged in my new videocard and installed the drivers, but I have a problem. AMD Catalyst Control Center will not open. It's really difficult because I can not do anything to set. I can not set the picture and make wider, so get on all four sides of the black screen (see picture) I must necessarily be in AMD Catalyst Control Center. I've removed the drivers and reinstalled, but I can unfortunately not get in AMD Catalyst Control Center (settings).

Jun 8, 2013Trying to play need for speed, the game had black corners around it, it wasn't in full screen, so i decided to go to CCC and tried messing around with it's settings perhaps i could get the Full screen back and noticed that i had so many options/settings missing in it, like it wasn't as same as it was in windows 7, below is screen shots of it and my driver, I also tried uninstalling it and the AMD RADEON 6300M Driver and cleaning the AMD reg files and re-installing it but nothing seems to work.

Jan 6, 2014I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue - Using 8.1 on a notebook with amd Trinity APU [A6-4400m] - all the display related Fn Keys are defeated. The non-display-related Fn + keys work. I can use CCC to manipulate external monitors, brightness, etc ok but it is not a good solution.
Plug in HDMI to external monitor and I get, by default, both.. both set non-optimally. must manually defeat the onboard display, change settings on external, reset overscan, etc etc etc

Dec 31, 2013I had to recently refresh Windows 8.1 so I had to go re-download AMD Catalyst Control Center. When I did this, I opened it up and there is only around two category settings which are "Performance" and "Power" and this is with "Advance settings" turned on. I use to have around 7 categories of settings to mess around with. If I recall, one was called "VGA Display Settings" and it let me position my screen, which I direly need.
Where did all the other settings go?

May 28, 2014I have an HP Envy Dv7 with windows 8, running an Intel i7 processor with an NVIDIA graphics card. I have had this laptop for about 1 year. Recently I have had an extreme case of lag with anything that i do, whether it be turning it on, signing in, or browsing the internet. I also occasionally get a popup that tells me that my catalyst control center has stopped working and that windows will close the program until it can find a solution. I haven't run a virus scan because it would take days to get that far on the internet to run it. Should I factory reset? Most of my files are on a cloud so if it would work, I can do that. What should I do?

Jun 3, 2013The other day my son stepped on my laptop and messed up the screen. Now when it starts up I get red lines going across the screen, but can still see the bios info and the windows logo and spinning dots when Windows loads just fine, however when Windows starts I just have a blank screen. Obviously the screen was damaged, but it seems to display the lower resolution okay. I just can't lower the resolution in Windows since I can't see what I'm doing. Plugging in an external monitor doesn't work, there's no output there. Is there way to change the resolution settings if I take it the hdd and plug it into another computer as an external drive? The laptop is an Intel cpu and my other machine is an AMD cpu, so I don't think just trying to boot the laptop hard drive in the desktop would work.

Sep 15, 2014I am having trouble with my computer. A message pops up that Catalyst control center: host application has stopped working. And my PC will inform me when it is working. So I try to restart but it says that the host application is preventing the computer from restarting even though I know that it is not turned on. The problem is that it slows down my computer and even after I think I have solved it it goes back to not working.
The problem has caused me to not being able to use the internet. Also on occasion, when attempting to restart or shut down it took longer than 10 hours (I did not wait for it to complete I then manually shut it down). I have tried resetting it to a date where my computer functioned fine several times but it only solves the problem for a short period.

Mar 1, 2014My computer is hp envy dv6 7280sf notebook with 2 GPUs intel graphics HD 4000 and Nvidia Gefoce 630 M running windows 8 64x.
After making an free upgrade online for windows 8.1 which run successfully, both gpus were ok...
But after receiving a windows update with new drivers for intel graphics 4000 gpu , after install and restart , the computer freezes on blank black screen at windows startup with no mouse or anything only backlight.
So safemode was succeful but i figured that the update for windos update was the cause and graphics drivers were installed so i removed the drivers for intel graphics and itried to reboot the computer so the restart was succeful but the intel graphics card was unistalled and no drivers were automatically installed so i tried to download and install the drivers from hp and intel website for windows 8.1 however the install fails.
Automatic install from device manager failed both online and from computer and even from manual driver selection.
So therefore the install failed in safe mode , and the high def audio device ( on screen audio possibly) failed and the device was not recongnized (no drivers installed) so i'm stuck without anydrivers for the integrated gpu and the games are no longer able to run normally even if the nvidia card is on.
I tried downloading an installing Windows 8 drives but it failed to install also , for instance any new install of drovers seems to fail for me even for external usb hard drive.

Feb 21, 2014I'm building a system for cryptocoin mining, and am having a little problem with getting Windows 8.1 (home, not pro) to run the 3rd card (GPU) My equipment is:
Gigabyte 990 FXA UD3 MOBO
AMD Vishera CPU
2x4 gig Corsair Ram
3x Sapphire r9 280x Video cards
1000w Corsair PSU
Scandisk SSD
All parts are brand new.
Here is the problem... everything boots just fine and runs with 2 of the GPU's installed. I have the latest AMD 13.12 drivers, and the AMD APP SKD installed. When I add the 3rd GPU though, windows will auto detect it as a Radeon 7900 with the caution sign, AND/OR a r9 200 series card, also with the caution sign, most times BOTH. Then it randomly freezes the system. A couple of times I got it to run long enough just by luck I guess, to install the 13.12 drivers on the 3rd GPU, but then in a few minuites the system would freeze again.
2 GPU's run just fine, the problem only shows up when the 3rd card is installed, and it happens on any of the 4 16x slots, or both 1x slots on the MOBO. It doesn't matter if the GPU's are directly on the MOBO, or on 1x16 risers. There are plenty of folks running this set up with up to 6 GPU's, so I know it can be done, but I must be missing something somewhere in the windows set up.

Sep 5, 2013I've got a bit of a strange issue that I haven't had with previous OSes on this PC. I'm running a Dell OptiPlex 380 with Win 8 x64 at the office and I have to run 2 video cards for all of my screens. I have a GeForce 8400GS in the PCI-E slot and a GeForce 6200 in the PCI slot.
Previous to the Win 8 install, it worked fine. Booted exactly as I had shut it off. Now, with 8 - it's killing my PCI-E card presumably when it puts the screens to sleep when I leave for the day. So I'm coming in to all of my windows being moved to the PCI card's monitor (only one hooked to it) and I have to reboot to get PCI-E card to come back.
If I check the screen properties, I see only the screen hooked to the PCI card. I've changed the setting in the BIOS for the first video card to Auto and also tried the PCI-E selection and it's the same either way.
Why on earth would it default to the PCI card rather than the PCI-E card?

automatically shutsdown i don't know whats the reason is and that's why i am stuck at windows 8 till now although have 8.1 ISO but i don't want to install it as i have to erase my my windows 8 which came pres-installed so i will loose my genuine windows 8 .now i want to know what if i open the 8.1 installer and install it from a virtual tool like Deamon although it gives an option to keep files app setting safe but i fear that it would conflict with 8 and i would have to format my laptop then ok now to the major problem i just recently purchased Watch Dogs and installed it.I played the first mission and got busted so the mission failed and it began to reload and then a error pops up saying watch dogs have stopped working upon googling i found out that this is due to DUAl AMD Graphics so they stated that i should disable it but i cant find any option of disabling DUAL Graphics.
