The average monitor can display 25 lines of text in full screen mode. When you list a directory containing more than 25 files, some of the filenames disappear off the top of the screen before you have a chance to read them. What do you add to the DIR command to always prevent this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had to enter Windows 8 in safe mode with command prompt to do something. After I did that, I pressed alt+F4 to exit the command prompt, so now I have a complete black screen with a cursor that I can move. I want to exit the safe mode now, to reboot again in normal mode. However, there is nothing to click on, alt+F4 doesn't work, ctrl+alt+del doesn't work, etc. There are some things that do work (for example win+P to connect a second screen, but I don't need that...). When I press the power button, it just goes to sleep. So I just want to get out of this situation. How to bring up command prompt again or shut it down completely ...
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Win 8 with two monitors, and am having the issue where the Start Screen will disappear once I click anywhere on my desktop on the other monitor. my eyes completely removes the purpose of running Windows 8 on a multi-monitor setup.
Basically I want the Start Screen to always be up on my second screen, and always have the classic desktop up on the primary screen.
Always keep a list of disabled services as you disable them! I spent a dramatic amount of time referencing 2-3 resources for each service I disabled and have had no issues up until now. I disabled a few in a row without restarting and managed to forget which they were. this has caused two issues If I can't/don't - the end result will be me having to reset them all to default, go through them one by one again - AND STILL not know which was the one(s) that caused my problem(s) which will risk the same thing happening again.
1) I set an account picture to my Microsoft.net account for windows 8.1x64 (the one that pops up when you turn on your PC and have to enter your password right after the lock screen but before windows) and after a restart, it disappears and goes back to the default grey square with a white outline of an avatar)
2) all my installed programs disappeared on the start screen! It's literally blank. I didn't have much due to it being a fairly new install but they all disappeared including PC settings and metro store (the two metro apps I had left). I checked if the apps still worked (mumble for example because it also disappeared) and they did, but if you go under program data/start menu/programs etc, all the folders with the app shortcuts in them are gone!
I tried to reinstall mumble; and it reinstalled fine, but still NO folder w shortcut being placed in the start menu therefore nothing being put on the start/apps screen. What on earth could be doing this service wise?
I wonder if there is a way to prevent tiles from dragging on the start screen? Hard to believe MS left this out! I often drag or swipe across the start screen and move a tile wo/ intending to. This happens often on the touch screen of my Samsung slate. Not sure if it happens as easily with a mouse.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to from 8 to 8.1 last night and now my main account is not showing up on the front screen for me to be able to log into it. All the other accounts are there. I've looked in 'CUsers' and the folder is still in there, how I can reinstate it? I also had a look at the restore point so I could 'roll back' but there's not a point in there from before the update, I thought update always set a restore point automatically?

My power settings say, while on battery, dim the display at 2min, turn off the monitor at 5min and put the computer to sleep after 15 minutes.
Is there a way to instruct Windows 8 that at the 5min mark, when it turns off my display to conserve power that I can avoid it going to the lock screen and then requiring my password? So, just turn off the display, but don't lock the computer?
I still would like the lock screen image to display if I hit WindowsKey+L. And I still want my computer to lock after it's been asleep (past the 15 minute mark), so the group policy stuff to "Do not display the lock screen" will not accomplish what I want.
When I opened up my start screen this morning a lot of different apps appeared, most of them were performance and diagnostics apps. I used one to see if there were any problems with the memory on my computer, after it had completed and told me that their were no problems, all of the apps disappeared. Where the apps came from and why they all disappeared.
View 3 Replies View RelatedOn the screen where you choose which user account to log in to, I've noticed the user avatars/icons are sorted in "last used" order. This is extremely annoying because it forces you to actively look at the icons instead of just alway clicking on the same place on the screen. (Compare it to if the digits buttons on your cellphone switched places e.g putting the 0 first. Confusing.)
How can I prevent this, ie to have the avatars in a fixed position always?
My screen seems to have a grey filter overlaying it. See attached.
When i booted it in safe mode, the screen is showing the right vibrant colors. When i booted it back to normal mode, the screen is greyish but strangely the mouse is showing the correct white color.
I have googled across numerous website but none of them bring me closer to the issue. I have read the thread, Personalize Suddenly Greyed Out but this is not what i encountered. The options or buttons or selections did not grey out, it affects the screen only.
I cannot afford a system restore because i shared this laptop with my gf.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI sometimes experience crashes when playing some games, which is perfectly normal and I can understand that no program can ever be 100% crash proof, but I have noticed some really annoying behaviour during and after a crash.
With many games, when they crash from a full screen window they often cause the window switching behaviour to stop working, starting task manager to close the program is nearly always impossible because I cant switch to it. Any error dialogues, with important information, cant be viewed because all I can see is a blank black/white window, which cant be closed or interacted with in any way.
Often I find myself struggling to close a crashed app, and resort to logging off or even restarting sometimes.
Things I try that rarely work:
-Trying to even switch window.
-Trying to use task manager.
-Right clicking on the taskbar icon to close (doesn't close the app when pressed)
How it is caused and is there anyway to get rid of it?
Whenever I load up Starcraft 2 or TombRaider for example, games that go full screen on my PC, I lose my internet connection. When it comes to Starcraft 2, You need an internet connection to play. I don't know what to do and I've been trying to google up a solution without much success. I have Windows 8 Home Basic and a Netis WF-2117 Wireless PCI adapter.

In Windows 8, I opened for the first time a video, with the video app.
It opens in full, maximized screen.
In Win7, for example, when opening a video (with WMV) the usual minimize, maximize/adjust size buttons appear in the upper right corner of the active window.
I want to be able to click on, with my mouse, the maximize button (wherever it is) and adjust the size of my active window.
How do I do this in Windows 8?
I'm running with Windows 8.1 and still trying to get used to it, my issue now is that on some but not all videos on FB that I try to view in fullscreen it only last a matter of seconds before freezing up automatically going wacko back to the original posting and then scrolls on it's own...........

View 7 Replies View RelatedOn my desktop computer, when I try viewing youtube videos (and videos from some other sources) full screen, the toolbar across the bottom of screen in the desktop mode remains visible, blocking my view of (and use of) the player controls at bottom of the youtube player. All I can see is the seek bar moving as the video plays. If I put the toolbar in the AutoHide mode, then I can see (and use) the youtube player controls.
On my laptop with Windows 8, this problem does not exist. The entire player appears normally as if there were an "always on top" mode.
One difference is that the laptop had Windows 8 factory installed, while I installed Windows 8 over XP in my desktop. (That $39 deal offered at the beginning of the year was too good to pass up). Both computers have x64-based processors.
Computer comparisons:
Laptop: Samsung; AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon HD Graphics, 2.70 GHz; 4.00 GB RAM, 64-bit OS
Desktop: Homebuilt; AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor 5050e; ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics (with latest driver); 2GB RAM; 32-bit OS
Neither computer has the toolbar in the AutoHide mode.
On some sites with the desktop computer, when I move the mouse pointer toward the left edge of the player, the seek bar retracts and I can't grab it to drag it to the right. I don't know the if laptop also has this problem.
I have been trying to fix for quite some time now, ever since I went to Windows 8 my computer just minimizes to desktop for no apparent reason and I cannot figure out why. Seems to happen at no particular pattern, usually takes around 10 minutes before I am minimized to desktop. I even tried turning UAC off and all of the auto updates. what this is happening? The only workarounds I have is to run in windowed full screen which has a lower framerate on average.
Shift and f11 used to give me a full screen using windows 7. How do I do using 8?

I have two monitors and have my desktop going across both monitors the way I like it. However when you click on a windows 8 tile, the screen it brings up fills both monitors. its annoying because whatever I am viewing is centered down the middle of two monitors and trying to read it is awful. I want to be able to set the window size that appears after clicking a tile to be half a screen (only one monitor). How to accomplish this? I know you can go to desktop mode and it will be sized however I like it, but I need to change the size of the windows after clicking the tile.

Unfortunatly it's a cruddy Metro UI version and not a real desktop application. I had to use a tile manager tool called OblyTile v0.9.8 to be able to make a desktop shortcut because I don't a truck with 8.1 That tool is here btw: [APP] OblyTile - Tile Creator for all programs. - xda-developers
Now I want this app to run in a window instead of fullscreen. An app like this.. i don't get it.. why leave it full screen when you have to multitask? I'd like to run this in a custom sized window that I can tell to always stay on top of other apps.
