When in settings the "brightness icon" is not working, when clicking the mouse over the icon, the following message appears: (windows can't adjust the brightness on this display) Before it was working just fine.
I'm running Windows 8 and for the last day or so, the windows icon, bottom left of the taskbar, is not working - it is there, but white - I'm sure it was yellow or so before, and it doesn't work. My windows key is working fine, but I've gotten used to the icon - especially if getting out of, say, a game and wanting to go back to the main screen. Also the right hand top hot key is also not working. What do I have to do to get these back again? I've tried cleaning the registry etc, - would it do a system restore?
Later......Actually it seems to have sorted itself....after trying lots of things, I was doing an update, and got a message that there was a problem, and it was shutting down and rebooting. Anyhow it seems to be working again. Now I know - if it happens again, I'll switch off and reboot!
The small icon that sits in the system tray, bottom right, near clock, won't work, it should show 5 or 6 bars of signal strength, but does not....I am connected via a 3 ''dongle'' and everything is fine..
I notice a short flicker from desktop icons when you press the "win+d" short cut. Sometimes some application windows also flicker when you use this short cut.
I guess the reason is some kind of refresh for the icons, actually it seems to be the same behaviour when you use the context menu on the desktop (right mouse click) and use the command "refresh".
It can easily be seen when you are on the desktop with all it's icons and have a small window open and then press win+d a couple of times. The Icons refresh and therefore flicker. That should be smoothed out.I notice this behaviour in Windows 8, Win7, XP.
This is no problem with a similar command in OSX or Ubuntu.
I have gone into the control panel and tried changing the screen brightness but nothing seems to work. I am the system administer so I should be able to set all changes.
When I upgraded to win 8.1 my screen brightness went up and i can't control it. i tried re-installing the graphic drivers but it's not working. Also my battery backup has decreased from 3.5 hrs to 2 hrs only. What do i Do?
I have tried to change my screen brightness for the first time since downloading windows 8.1(about a month ago) and it is stuck a the lowest level. I have used the keys, the settings, and even the "Adjust screen brightness" button after clicking on the battery in bottom right of screen. I looked at my drivers and checked if my "Display adapters" needed to be updated, it didn't.
i have a smal probleem with My new Acer tablet. The brightness of the screen randomly changes. i did some googling and i learned the tablet is able to auto adjust the beightness. I found a sensor on My tablet and did some testing by shining on it with a pocket torch and saw with more light the brightness increased. How i want it off. I Tried switching off the adaptive settings bit it didn' t work..
possible ways to adjust one's screen brightness within windows 8 on a laptop?
for some odd reason the laptop only adjusts the brightness when on the battery and it does that intelligent adjustment crap(tried to find a more polite word....failed).
I have an asus laptop and i have a problem with increase and decreasing level of brightness.
my operating system is windows 8.1 and i download and installed latest version of driver that is compatible with my OS. when i early installed windows, i installed drivers and don't have problem with it. but now after months suddenly it happened to me.
i can see OSD that changing brightness, but i don't actually see any change
what the registry key (or other option) was for the incremental brightness steps.
I am trying to figure out if I can lower the amount that my brightness changes in each "step" or click of the brightness function key. I know for a fact my display supports changing the brightness in smaller increments (You can do it with the slider in the battery settings) I just need to figure out how to change the amount that Windows increments/decrements per key-press.
I've installed windows 8 and I was able to change the screen brightness without any issues. After installing windows 8.1 however, I wasn't able to change the screen brightness. I was only able to change it when using the standard windows graphics driver, but when using the AMD driver it won't work.
So, a few days ago the battery of my laptop died and when I charged it and power it up again I found that I can't change the brightness of my screen which I was able to few minutes before. I tried fixing it by going onto control panel>hardware and sound>power option, but it didn't work. It's just stuck. What can I do? Is my laptop broken?
I just yesterday finished my new computer (16Gb RAM, i5-4470k, GTX 770, Win 8.1, etc.) and I just today realized that I cannot change the screen brightness. The button is grayed out and says "Unavailable" which I know cannot be possible.
Now, i have done my research and people say that the fix is to update your drivers through the Device Manager, and I have tried that to no avail. I have tried all possible combinations of "Display Adapters" and "Monitors" drivers. None work. I have been restarting my computer after every change .
One thing that I might add is that a lot of people remedy this problem by reverting their Intel Integrated drives back to an older version, but I do not have an option to change it's drivers. It shows up nowhere in the Device manager.
My eyes are burning as I am typing this and I would even go for a third-party brightness program (if that even exists).
Obviously there is no doubt that the n150+ or any Samsung note/netbook have had problems with not being able to control their devices brightness on Windows 7. This is because any driver after the OEM driver would change a particular number in the registry(regedit)
There were two fixes to this problem in WIndows 7. The simple way was to install the original VGA driver. The other was to change a specific number to 84 in the registries.
I have tried both and still can't adjust brightness with the fn keys. I've installed Easy Display Manager which is the software required to use fn key functions. Sound works automatically with or without the software.
I've noticed that whenever I unplug my charger my brightness dims down to a point where I know its on, but I can't use it. Usually I have to put my computer to sleep and turn it back on to get it to fix. Also, the brightness wont adjust in anyway when its on. I've tried the function keys and the setting in the side bar. I have a toshiba laptop running windows 8.1 . I also have recently completely wiped it thinking it was a virus of some sorta with no change.
I recently updated to 8.1 and I can't change the brightness, I have tried a lot of things. All my drivers are working fine. Playing games with this brightness setting is pretty hard.
Lenovo IdeaPad N585 Display Adapter is AMD Radeon HD 7310
brightness goes to minimum as soon as i start my system and then i can't increase it using any settings . I can increase it sometimes using keyboard , but that is temporary . Also whether it is plugged in or not , that thing doesn't change the problem.
I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 and I have installed all the updates provided by Microsoft but it seems like I cannot change my brightness in my laptop although it was working fine in Windows 8..
I have old Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. It had windows xp sp3 and I upgraded it to windows 8 Pro. After upgrading I noticed the brightness icon on the settings had unavailable written on it. I am unable to change the brightness setting. When I point the mouse on top of the brightness icon, it reads Windows cannot adjust the brightness on this display. Also the functions keys on the keyboard for brightness don't work. Is the problem with my Quickset Driver ?
Other than this issue the laptop is working fine. The audio is working.
I have a Lenovo Flex 14 - win 8.1 (64 bit).I have restored my pc and after the recovery the option to adjust the display brightness has "disappeared". The option is no longer in place in the charms bar or in Power Option and the adjustment keys (F11 and F12) are not working either.
I have a new computer , HP recline 23 . OS is Windows 8.1 . It came out of the box with Windows 8 , so I had MS store update to 8.1. The screen is set very bright , OK for day use but too bright for night use .
My problem is that I can't adjust the screen brightness. After clicking on the charms menu and clicking on settings , the brightness icon is greyed out . It says windows cannot adjust brightness on this computer. I tried the various locations where the brightness slider may be but all the relevant screens show no brightness slider.
I don't know whether win 8 had the brightness control before upgrading to 8.1 ( I mention this because several people complain that after upgrading to 8.1 , they loss brightness control amd regained it by rolling back the driver )
I tried the update driver option but it says my driver is already updated. The roll back option is greyed out ...
BTW the display adapter shows two adapters : Intel 4600 and Gforce GT730 . How do I check which one is being used?
I have an Acer Aspire 8930G with Windows 8.1 x64 and Windows 7 x86 as a dual-boot. I use 8.1 as my everyday OS and only boot into 7 to play older games that only work with a 32-bit OS.
Ever since I installed Windows 8, I have not been able to adjust the brightness of my screen. Note that this problem started since I installed 8, not 8.1, and before I put on the copy of 7 as a dual-boot. When I use Fn+left/right (the brightness keys on my PC), the brightness slider appears on-screen and goes up and down, but the brightness of the panel doesn't actually change. Using the Charm doesn't work either, nor does adjusting it through the Control Panel.
I have tried fiddling with my Power Options in the Control Panel and disabling adaptive brightness. I have tried several different driver versions for my GPU, a GeForce 9600M GT. None of this has worked.
In Windows 7, however, the brightness controls work fine. If I want to adjust my brightness for 8.1, I have to boot into 7, change the brightness there, and then boot back into 8.1, where it will keep whatever brightness setting I was using in 7.
Is there some messed-up thing in the Registry? Is my GPU's firmware maybe just not compatible with Windows 8? I took a look at TechPowerUp's repository of GPU BIOSes, but it appears I already have the most recent one.
Since updating my HP Pavillion 64 bit to Windows 8.1, I have been unable to use an HDMI cable or reduce the computer brightness. I figured it would be a simple fix: restore to before the update, and wait for the bugs to be worked out. However, every time I attempt to access the control panel to perform a system restore, the entire OS freezes. Update: I tried to power on my computer just now to no avail. Stayed on the HP loading screen for 30 min.
since I updated to Windows 8.1. My screen is stuck on dim. It's not dim enough to be unusable, but it's dim enough that I wish I could turn the brightness up. If I use the hardkeys on my keyboard to turn it up or down, the bar will go up and down, but the brightness won't change. Same goes for using the settings charm brightness bar and adjusting via control panel. I've tried updating my display and video drivers, and messing around with the battery "power plan" settings, but after all that it still won't change.
I've recently picked up a Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus (first windows 8 experience) and have come across a display issue whenever the laptop gets unplugged, namely that the colors become incredibly dark as it the contrast takes a dive.
Here is a recreation.

I have: Turned off adaptive brightness, told it to never dim the screen at any time for any reason under any battery plan, and still, right-on-the-dot, at exactly 1 minute, my screen turns off.
I have gone into the control panel and tried changing the screen brightness but nothing seems to work. I am the system administer so I should be able to set all changes.
Well I've had my laptop for almost 5 months now, however I did break it and got a screen replacement yesterday. Ever since then my screen seems dim. I've altered all the settings (as explained on other threads) but I still can't get to the centre of the problem. I had no trouble altering my brightness before my screen replacement so I do presume that the screen that the shop fitted wasn't the correct one and therefore a cheap option.
