Audio :: Input Jack On Computer Not Working
Jul 23, 2014
My Dad used to use the laptop that me and my Mom share, and he did something to the settings on the computer (I don't know what, or else I would have fixed it myself.) which allow you to use a USB mic, and he disabled the microphone jack on the computer.
I really want to find out how to change it, because I'm planning on doing TF2 livestreams, and I need the mic to do so, and if I can't find a way to fix this, then I'm going to either have to use one of the crappy USB mics we have, or I'm going to have to convince my Dad to let me use his 300$ mic.

I updated to Windows 8 today, and everything seemed to be going well until I tried playing music through my headphones. They worked fine on my iPhone, but once I plugged them into my laptop, no sound came out.

I ran windows updates today.

I have read a number of threads on this issue. My HP running windows 8.1 with IDT High Definition Audio CODEC consistently tells me that my headphones are unplugged in both the front and back audio ports of my desktop. I thought getting windows 8.1 on my new desktop would enable me to have audio. Apparently not so far.
I restarted the computer. I reinstalled the IDT drivers. I checked that they were up to date. I tried the troubleshooting method through windows that kept telling me that the headphones/speakers were unplugged. Okay, that's not true. The headphones work. Devise manager had no yellow exclamation marks.
So what's left to do? Buy windows 7 for $100 and reinstall it on this computer to so I can have sound and an operating system that's not infuriating?
I don't think this is due to some virus I managed to get in record time with minimal use of this computer. So what's next to do?

I am trying to record from a cassette player on to my hp envy h8-1500z. I have a cable going from the headphone jack on the player to the blue line in jack on the pc. I have gone to the recording devices and have the line in jack enabled. That is as far as I can get because it says it is not plugged in? I have plugged it into the mic jack and it recognized that. I have tryed updating the drivers to no avail.

So today I got a new acer laptop with windows 8. The laptop only has one audio/microphone input in it. When I first plugged the headset microphone jack into the singular input, it asked what device it was. I selected headset and moved on. Later, I could not find my headset mic in my audio devices/microphones. I could only see the computer default internal microphone.

Well, things went on until noon yesterday, but suddenly My PC takes no audio input or gives any output.
I have tried reinstalling driver, checking mute button, checking Cables etc, none of the audio devices work on my PC which work in other devices.
On opening realtek audio manager and playing auto test, Nothing plays, and going to control Panel -> Sound, and playing the test tone, I get this error:
Just as an additional info, I reinstalled AVG Internet Security 14 yesterday, and probably the audio was working till then. Once AVG was installed and the system got restarted, a system Update was triggered automatically, if that has got anything to do with my problem.
P.S. I could not use system restore as well, I get the following error:
Also, I come to know by googling that The Audio and System restore problems come in combos frequently.

I only just bought a new computer with Windows 8.1 on it. (SO not impressed with this OS.) Anyway, I'm trying to set up all my externals. I have an external microphone I use through a Tascam US-200 audio interface. It has the ability to record in stereo and I have done so for some time using Audacity on my old computer running Windows 7 with no problems.
I checked that the Tascam system has been tested with Windows 8. No problems there. I installed the drivers and audacity and set everything up. However, I'm still only getting mono sound instead of stereo when I attempt to record. I've double checked that the Default Format for the input device is set to 2 channel, 16 bit, 441000 Hz and that Audacity is set to take in a stereo input. No joy. I can record sound but only in mono.
P.S. After repeated attempts I CAN get the system to recognise the stereo input... for less than a second when first turned on. Something is getting through but for some reason it just doesn't keep.

Windows 8 device (Dell XPS 12 i7 running Windows 8.1 Pro). I like the touch input when it is flat in tablet mode, but when I plug a USB mouse into it when I am at my desk, I want the mouse inputs to be treated exactly like finger inputs on the touch screen. For example, scrolling by touching/clicking anywhere in a window or the ability to flick things using my mouse like I can with my finger. Simply using the mouse makes everything behave like it did in Windows 7: Clicking and dragging selects things instead of scrolling in Office 2013. I don't want this, I want it behave like Android does when I plug a mouse into it: Just like a finger was there.
I have looked everywhere for such a setting, but I cannot find one. How can I achieve this? I want all mouse inputs to be treated exactly like touch inputs.

Recently I decided to go ahead and update to the Windows 8.1 version of the Realtek HD Audio Driver. I procrastinated because it told me I'd have to uninstall the original audio driver and I knew it would take a while to do everything needed. It didn't work that after uninstalling the original audio driver, then restarting like Windows told me to do, I kept getting error messages that forced my computer to restart until eventually my computer let me log in and install the updated audio driver.
However, with the updated version of this driver I had the same issue I got with the original one only much much worse. The original Realtek HD Audio Driver that I had on my computer made music and videos sound absolutely awful when headphones were plugged in. I found out that this is because the driver automatically puts on so-called "enhancements" whenever headphones are plugged in. This was a very simple fix, simply go to "Sound", then under "Playback" you click on "Speakers", then go to "Enhancements" and check the box labeled "Disable all sound effects." Then sound through headphones would return to normal.
Well, with the Window 8.1 version of this audio driver, I can do the same thing, but it never stays that way. Every time I plug in my headphones, it resets back to having enhancements. The strange thing though is that it says the enhancements are disabled but when I reactivate the enhancements(No difference in sound quality) then deactivate it again, suddenly the sound through my headphones is back to normal.
Did the audio driver not install properly? Is there something I can do to permanently disable the audio enhancements?

I updated to 8.1 because supposedly, it was to offer features similar to win 7. Instead, it's even worse than win 8. Now, the sound quality on my laptop is lousy because the Dolby Audio driver receives an error message and isn't working. I went to Lenovo (I have a Ideapad N Series 580) and followed these instructions from Lenovo and microsoft, which unfortunately didn't work. I'm still getting the same error message. I wish I had never heard of windows 8.1! Many have had this same problem after installing 8.1. This instructions are from Answers.Microsoft, but didn't work.
Open Device Manager. (Right-click on the Start button and choose Device Manager).
Expand the Sound, Video and Games Controllers section.
Right Click on the Conexant Smart Audio HD item and choose Uninstall.
Still in Device Manager, click on Action>Scan for new Hardware.
The Conexant Smart Audio item will re-appear.
Right-Click on it and choose update driver.
Navigate to d:driversaudio.
When that's done, close Device Manager.
Open File Manager and navigate to D:driversAudioDolbyGUI and install Dolby Home Theater.
These instructions are from Lenovo and didn't work.

I installed the latest Gigabyte version of the Realtek HD Audio Manager but it still doesn't work. What should I do?
I have the codec ALC887

i've been having this problem since I THINK starting to use a HDMI wire. But now, i cannot get any audio from the audio jacks, they are detected, but no sound is produced and I just cannot figure it out. I've disabled the HDMI, installed, un-installed, re-installed audio drivers and pretty much any method and i can find thus far and nothing at all has worked. I'm a huge lover of music, and the is driving me insane!
Note: The speakers are fine, they work with my iPhone.

But if I disable Sound/Video Controller and then enable it, the audio comes back properly. But my problem is that every time I open the computer, I have to do this exercise if I wish to watch aan audio/video bit!

I have had this computer for about a year now and it recently started acting up. What happens is the audio begins to distort and than the computer freezes if I close something out. This only used to happen when a lot of stuff was running at once or a big game was player, Spore for example.
Recently it has been doing it more. Before if I skyped with youtube on while i played a game, you know big stuff, it would do this, but now if I have a paused youtube video or an ended youtube video on while I play minecraft it does the same thing. There is no error code or anything, I have to manually turn it off and on.

I've created a Windows 8.1 partition separate to the original Windows 7 install. The manufacturer, Acer says the model is supported for the Win 8 upgrade. I did it on a second partition and simply installed the W8 drivers from their website. It uses Dolby Digital Audio V4. It sounds poor on Win 8 though, on the occasion that I boot back into Win 7 the difference is like night and day. Any icons in the try, apps etc. appear to be properly installed and loaded in Win 8 yet the audio quality from the speaker and with a headset is still degraded.
