Is it ok and safe to run the old style win 7 gadgets under win 8 ??? There is a popular 8 pack that I have downloaded and used b-4 but I am not sure if I should install on a new win 8 computer that I just got.....

Is there a way to prevent this without having to press win+G all the time after showing desktop?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI hate going to the Start Screen, typing whatever it is that I'm looking for, and not having the search results immediately displayed for me like they were in windows 7. In Windows 8 I now have to use my mouse to go to the right side of the screen and toggle the search result between apps, settings, or files.
In Windows 7 I could type in utorrent and press enter on my keybord, if that's what i was looking for, instead of having to type utorrent.exe. And because it was the first search result it would then open the program (or file etc.) that I was looking for automatically.
I thought perhaps the run command was the input box I needed, but it wasn't.
I just updated to windows 8.1 from windows 8 a while ago. I would like to ask how to disable the old style right click on start screen?
I want my original 'right-click style' on windows 8. But by default it currently uses the classic-style, I'm going to provide a screenshot to let you see what I mean.
I accidentally reinstalled Windows 8.1 on a MBR partitioning style. I'm debating whether to start over and make sure I do it properly as GPT. I haven't installed any programs yet...is it worth it? (my MB is recent, supports UEFI, and im installing to an SSD).

But when I select the partition drive it said that windows cannot be install in that drive because the selected drive is GPT partition style. I have an XP style Quick Launch bar on my taskbar.* Every once in awhile, such as this morning, it disappears on startup and Sys Restore doesn't bring it back. It's located via %appdata%MicrosoftInternet Explorer and there's already a Quick Launch folder. Short of recreating it, is there a quick way to bring the whole thing back in one piece?

Update: Strange. I created a new Quick Launch toolbar, got rid of show text and show title, and all the links were there to be dragged to the left, only in alphabetical order, per the folder list. So problem solved, something learned. Though not sure why it disappears every so often.
As a Multi-Monitor user I'm currently plagues with 3 Problems concerning the Metro Style OnScreenKeyboard.
1. For most of the time it appears on the wrong Monitor - Not the one with touch capability thus forcing me to manually move it over to the right screen which, at best, is annoying.
It appears it's kind of bound to where the Start Screen currently resides but it would be a lot more useful if it could be tied to one screen.
2. On 2 of my Screens it takes up about - the screen space limiting their usefulness while on my other 2 about - which is more desireable - what triggers this behavior and how can I control it?
3. Is there an option to force the OSK to keep the last setting of which Keyboard I've used? It keeps reverting to the simple one when I'd like to use the Advanced one.
i had a bunch of images of a chest of drawers i wanted to sell. On my windows 7 PC all the previews showed the images sideways (landscape when they needed to be viewed in portrait). this is not a problem - expected behavior.
On the windows 8 PC all the images appeared portrait and in the correct orientation. images looked perfect. i understand that windows 8 reads the exif data and autorotates the images on previews and in the galleries. a neat trick.
On the windows 8 PC i put an ad on the website that i wanted to sell the drawers, and when i selected the images they previewed portrait in the file browser too. when uploaded the images all came out sideways (landscape) on the website.
this might seem like user error or a rudimentary problem at first, and trust me i have many years as a system admin under my belt, it is going to cause many problems of a similar nature for every user that touches it.
Windows 8 leads you to believe that your images are correctly oriented firstly, and then does not provide an easy way to adjust and save them even if you do know that they need to be adjusted. even in the windows photo viewer on the desktop (non metro viewer) you can rotate an image as much as you like with the buttons and it will not auto save it like it does in Win7.
In Win7 you could see that the image needs adjustment and its a good prompt for you to action, so you open it, rotate it, and it is automatically saved by the photo viewer so then whatever you do with it, it will be oriented correctly.
what i find absolutely crazy is that windows knows the image needs to be rotated, but does not save the image after it autorotates it, so it lulls you into a false sense of security.
I've recently noticed a Windows update that changes the way you close apps, amongst a number of other things.

This update was unticked in the 'Update and Recovery' section. Every other update had a checkbox ticked, this one didn't.
Other changes bought along by installing this update:
- New applications in the 'Apps' section of the Start menu are now highlighted with a greybox.
- Shut down options now in the start menu (and search, I'm not sure)
One extra thing that seems to be around depending on... something.
This one's related with Chrome. Usually when you start typing in the url box, your search terms are cut off with a rounded border going around. This box has disappeared with the latest update, but I have seen this happening in earlier versions of Windows.

So I uninstalled the app and when I tried to install it back I get the screenshot below.. So I tried Yahoo Mail, some games, some other apps.. Nothing will work. Mail finally said it installed, but it's not on my computer and the app store says it's already installed. I have my own custom built computer, if you need the specs look under the specs drop-down, it's all there...

For some reasons, unknown by me, i try to access multiplayer mode on my gaming apps that allows online access will not connect to the internet. It tells me that i am not connected to the internet when i am clearly connected to it. My internet is through router and it works fine; i can access my browser just surfing the web. Its just this specific thing that i desire to fix badly.

I tried to use location on the Bing weather app and it was over 100 miles out. Couldn't figure out how to solve this so uninstalled it.
Then I did something obviously stupid, I did a restore. I thought that by 'all apps' WIndows 8 did not mean programs, but it evidently does (a slight rewrite would make that clearer to those of us who don't identify all apps as including programs).
Ok, I had to reinstall programs, a nuisance but that's all. However, all my Bing apps are now gone.
They appear in 'Your apps' in the store as in my computer named DOUGW-PC but a search doesn't find them. Reinstalling doesn't do anything either. I can install new apps and they show up fine.
having installed and configured all the software I need, I felt almost ready and relieved to finally create a backup image of my system. However, I have just realised that most built-in Metro Apps have stopped working.
In detail, Weather, Maps, Mail, Skype, Calendar, Contact, Stocks (and probably few more) do not work, i.e., when I click-open them, there is the short animation in which the App symbol is magnified to full screen, and then immediately afterwards I am sent back to the Metro interface. However, the apps do still appear in the Metro Apps' taskbar on the left side of the screen. Re-Opening them from there leads gives the same result.
Very few apps work, like Skydrive, Photos and Store.
I can confirm that I neither had this issue with Windows 8 nor right after my Windows 8.1 installation, which is when I checked Metro apps for the last time.
What settings in the meantime have caused this disruption, I can only say that I have not done any real work with the computer since the fresh install but merely installed and configured everything to my specifications.
Just for the sake of ruling out some possible causes, I can confirm that: I have no third-party firewall or antivirus programs installed; that I have no nvidia or ATI/AMD graphics card, just the Intel HD 4000 onboard graphics; and that I use the most recent drivers everywhere.
I have already read Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter - Fix Apps in Windows 8 and gone through most of the points, except the refresh install, which I would like to avoid since this is a newly installed computer.
The following errors are reported in the application event log of Windows:
1) Event id 10: "Fehler beim Laden der Anwendungseinstellungen for Paket "Microsoft.BingMaps_8wekyb3d8bbwe". Fehlercode: 5" This is the original German message, translated to english this means:

I've had windows 8 for a bit, but since I've installed the OS not a single one of my windows apps will work. I've tried a lot of options and none fix it. I will open up a app ( windows store app or PC settings for example) and it will open and display the icon and blown up screen then immediately minimizes and will not allow me to maximize it. I'm so tired of it! I can't download any new apps or update my old ones let alone use any of them. I ran a basic trouble shoot through Microsoft and it came up at one point saying I need a Microsoft account. which is crazy because I've put in my CD key like 50 times and registered it when I put the OS on this computer . View 7 Replies View RelatedI really like windows 8 and stuff, but ive been having problems with windows 7 so i decided to install windows 8.1 and never look back, but it appears that ive had an issue for the first time ever with windows 8.x
So I was trying to make this game called blacklight retribution run on windows 8 (it crashes for some reason)
And at some point i was installing some radio apps for the metro interface and trying to play the game at the same time (my PC is pretty weak -3.1ghz AMD processor, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd and a radeon 3300 hd integrated graphics card)
So my windows 8.1 (with the latest updates) crashed with the all-cool-new-bluescreen-of-death and after that my windows store app renders its content as if its broken, here's what it looks like:
I restarted windows numerous times, but the windows store app still appears to be "broken" but other apps seem to work as they should.
I am new to windows 8 and I couldn't find a way to restore windows to an earlier point, I know a very straightforward way - reinstall windows 8.1.
I have a Windows 8.1 and a problem with my apps. When I try to open weather, finance and other apps, They show their start-up screen and in a couple of seconds they're gone - I am brought to my metro screen... Tried to reinstall the apps, but hadn't got any luck...
But wait, it get interesting: Even though the weather app crashes, I have a live tile option on for that app, and it shows me weather nicely.

When I try to download Metro apps from Windows Store, I receive an error message saying "Something happened and this app couldn't be installed. Please try again later. Error code: 0x80010108".
I Googled it and tried to reset Windows Store cache by wsreset.exe but it didn't work. It occurs to every app I try to install.
Is it possible to download free apps from Windows Store directly (without going through "Windows Store" icon/apps in Windows 8.1? I'm having a problem with Windows Store in my OS, whenever I try it, it just said no network connection, but I can surf no problem using FF/Skype etc. If I can go directly to Windows Store website and download the apps directly from there, it'll be awesome, but everytime I tried, it just goes back to my OS Windows Store.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows 8.1 pre-installed on a new laptop used mostly for business, and use a mouse, keyboard and graphics tablet. I find that frequently a "Windows Accessories" app Windows Journal for note-taking and handwriting conversion opens a new file for no apparent reason. I have had as many as 20 empty windows start) and want to disable this but can't find away to.
When showing apps as tiles, there is no "uninstall" option for Windows category items (Accessories, Ease of Access, system) as far as I can see.
In Control Panel / Programs & Features/ there is no Windows Accessories Item.
In the Settings/PC settings/Search and Apps/App sizes only a couple of these "Accessories" are shown (e.g. Calculator and sound Recorder) but most others including Journal aren't.
Is there any other way to disable or remove this app?
I am having issues with Office 365... and frankly I would never sign up for a subscription service, but I got a great deal since I am a student on a multi-year subscription. I don't think my issue is subscription related, but is related to the office products.
I am running Windows 8.1 with all of the high priority updates installed, on my Acer Aspire desktop system with a I3 processor, maxed out memory, an SSD for OS/programs, and the original HDD for most data. The system came with Windows 7, and was upgraded to 8 shortly after I bought it, then 8.1 when it became available. I believe that the Windows 8 was loaded from DVD I burned as part of installing the SSD, and was a clean install. I mention this all in case there is some potential unedrlying issue based on the upgrade path.
I am running Avast (paid version) which runs clean when I scan.
The issue is that every office program I have tried fails almost immediately, when I either open a document, or if I select a document in Windows Explorer.
I have uninstalled Office completely then reinstalled.
Then I uninstalled, removed application's directory, cleaned a couple of registry keys manually, then reinstalled.
I have only installed one app that I can recall since the last time the office products worked for me, and that is Quicken Willmaker 2014. I have printed my will, so I will be uninstalling to see if it matters. Since it worked, I don't recall any Office related updates being downloaded.
Whether or not that program removal solves the issue, I plan to download and try CCleaner...
One other possible issue. It has always been flaky for me, but my IE 11 seems even more finicky than usual... This might be unrelated, or in my head, but I thought I would mention it in case it is relevant. I have not noticed any issues with other applications or functions.
Anything obvious that I am missing or that I should add to my to-do list?
I updated windows 8.1 pro with wmc from store.I had NO problems, received no error messages, had no dc's, the power didn't shut off, the download didn't stop .. literally nothing went wrong. After update everything worked fine. All the apps are downloaded and were working fine.
But,After 2/3 months since updated, I suddenly noticed that every live tile / folder / app / game / setting etc. which were working fine, now not working.When I clicked on any tile, nothing happened. It just went to a blank green screen because my background color is green. It appears on the left upper corner as opened but doesn't run. When I click, I am send back to Start Screen or Desktop. Even Store and Windows Setting stopped working. So, naturally i started checking the web for answers, but couldn't find a solution to the exact problem i was having. I saw countless posts of people saying "Just uninstall / re-install the apps" but at first, I couldn't get my App store app to run. Again, it was just blank after several minutes of waiting. I was able to download it after using the search bar menu on the right side of my computer, and was able to start installing some apps.
So i thought that everything was going to be ok, but then I ran into another problem where some of the apps wouldn't install, and I received an error message with the code/number of 0x80070002.
So, at this point, only a few of my apps are working due to the simple fact that I was able to re-install them, but the others I can't re-install because of this error message.
FIRST SOLUTION:I found a thread online that someone had created with a simple fix to about 2-3 errors on the tiles. This is a simple powershell script to re-register some apps so that they can run again. This worked to fix my app store app and setting, but only that apps. The app update is still not working.
I have another windows live ID, and when I log in with that Id, all my apps works normally! I am out of sorts now.
After installing all available updates of windows 8.1, my checkbox for "Show windows Store apps on taskbar" simply disappeared from the taskbar properties. Moreover, the on and off option from Settings -> Change PC settings -> PC and devices -> Corners and edges -> App switching also seems to be forever gone. In other words when I open an app I can't close it (Esc isn't working any more or X option) and I can't see it on the taskbar
View 4 Replies View Relatedi'm running Windows 8 Home Premium.I'd like to increase my startup speeds, I already disabled as much as I can in Task Manager, msconfig, etc.In the Task Scheduler, it shows Metro Apps are taking CPU time at startup though. After much searching on the topic, I find very little about how to disable the Metro Apps from starting up. The main one I want to disable is "Mail, Calendar, People, and Messaging". I do not want to uninstall them, I just do not want them to do anything until I open them. It takes over 2 minutes of CPU time at startup for that one Metro App to fully load, and most of the time I never use it.
I have tried going into the Permissions of the App, and I disabled all of its Permissions to run in background of lock screen and everything. Still, it loads in Task Manager and takes CPU time.
