Any Harm In Doing A Force Power Shutdown?
Jun 6, 2014I had to do force power shutdown it while the whole system got stuck up following Prime95 stability scan when I customised blend settings for CPU 100% load along with 92% memory usage. Next time it was when the system freezed following CoreTemp startup (when I researched it through forums i could notice that the freezing issue is a bug in their latest version still persisting while running on win 8.1 OS). The last one was when I had to do when while shutting down normally I unplugged the usb connection from the port and system remained 'on' for unusually long time while screen had already turned off.

Mar 13, 2014My last computer died a week ago so I bought a new desk top tower. I'm well conditioned to using W7 but everything seems to have W8 or W8.1 on it now so I got one with W8.1. First, I'm bummed that I have to learn how to use a new OS. Some say W8 is a better functioning version of W7. It's different, plain and simple.
I installed Classic Shell to add some of the familiar features from W7 to my W8.1. That did work with some things but when viewing pics, there is no task bar across the top of the screen like there was ion W7. I was hoping that Classic Shell would add one there but it did not.
Is there any way to add a task bar across the top of the screen in W8.1 when viewing a picture file like there is in W7?

Unwanted Duplication Of New Files On Desktop To Picture Folder?
Feb 10, 2014When I delete either the original or the duplicate, the other file is deleted as well and, when I restore the single example from the recycle bin, both are restored.
My own solution is:-
1) Drag and drop the original file onto its duplicate into the picture folder.
2) Stop creating files on the desktop.
However, I wonder if there is a better way of doing this that would allow me to create files on the desktop again. I often use the desktop to convert RAW photo files, prior to filing them in the picture folder, which may have something to do with this.

Jan 10, 2013I've found a way to pin any FILE or any FOLDER to the Taskbar (as well as to the Start Screen) with no registry editing, no software, no scripts, or anything.
Just create a shortcut that leads to the file or folder, NOT directly, but indirectly by way of File Explorer -- which is a program and can be pinned anywhere. Taskbar - Pin or Unpin a Folder - Windows 7 Forums
Then give the shortcut a name, which may be the same as the file's name.
The shortcut will have a File Explorer icon, but you can right-click it, select "Properties" and change the icon (recommended -- if you put several of them on your taskbar, you won't want them all to look the same.)
Then right-click it again and select "Pin to Start" or "Pin to Taskbar." Afterwards you can delete it from the Desktop.
This works with .txt (Notepad) files too. And with folders. If you have Adobe Reader, it works with .pdf files.
It also works with shortcuts to CLSID's (see Brink's tutorial on "Shell Commands"), such as

I want to alphabetize all of the items within this folder but the best I can do is have it show me all the folders in alphabetical order and then all the files will begin and be shown in alphabetical order. What I am looking for is to have all the files and folders intertwined in alphabetical order and not folders and then files.

Oct 19, 2013Something is causing all My Documents files and folders to show up on my Desktop (along with what is normally there).They are not shortcuts.Properties show that they are actually located in My Desktop folder, but in My Documents, where they belong.
How I got to this state:
When I originally installed Win8Pro, I used sysprep to move Users to D drive, at OOBE.
I tried to reverse this, so I could upgrade to 8.1, but sysprep fails to get me to audit mode.
So I booted into Safe Mode with a new temp admin acct, and copied users back to C drive.
Then I used regedit to point all the profiles back to C drive.
Rebooted. Logged into my main account.
I then used Properties on all my Profile movable folders to move that content back to D.
All well and good until my Desktop fills up with files and folders, that aren't really supposed to display there.
They work the same and point to the same files if I access them normally through my account icon.
I've been looking for copy errors, haven't found anything yet.
Drag Files / Folders From One Directory To Another
Feb 18, 2014I am trying to organize the files on my system, and am consistently butting heads against this problem. It always seems to be the last file I highlight. In other words.. I have two directories open on the screen, and am simply looking to drag files/folders from one directory to another. To do this, you almost always have to highlight the folder you want to move, and doing this seems to put a lock on that folder. If I highlight more folders, it seems to be ok, except for the last one I highlight will always fail to copy.
Any way to prevent windows from locking files in this way?

Jun 9, 2014Over the years I've tried to save all my documents. This means that they have been copied from folder to folder and computer to computer (whatever was before Windows 95) probably mostly through external storage. However, some of these were saved directly to the 2nd internal hard drive D: of Windows 8 may be included, but I'm not certain.
I believe all of the folders are present, most of which are identified by date. However, many of the folders are completely empty. I cannot see a pattern as to which folders. This seems to involve mostly older folders, (and this may mean that it is more likely that they have been through a USB device) but not all of the older folders are empty. More recent ones are also empty. Otherwise, I cannot identify any specific documents, only that large numbers of folders are empty.
Folders Files Keep Changing Back To Default?
May 28, 2014I have recently undertaken to get my pictures folder all sorted out and I have got a couple of thousand pictures there. I have been trying to make individual folders within my folder in categories so that I can sort things.
The problem is that in each of these folders I have to keep clicking on "View" and then "Extra Large" over and over again. Isn't it supposed to stay like I put it without me having to re-tell it over and over? It keeps going back to the default size of the pictures.
tiring to have to keep on re-setting the picture sizes for the hundredth time.

Sep 15, 2014When my friend plugs in his iPhone wanting to download photos from it to the computer, a full screen Metro app opens, which I believe is the Photo app. But it just says Apple iPhone in big letters, and below that "There are no files or folders in this view". There are definitely pictures on the phone, and I had him take a few new ones just to be sure. In Autoplay, iPhone default action is "Import photos and videos (Photo)" so I am assuming this is the Photo app. I ran sfc /scannow, which found no problems, and DISM which said it fixed some corruption, and rebooted. But the issue remains.

Sep 10, 2013I have this annoying problem that just showed up recently since I've changed/upgraded laptops the past week.
I can't seem to access or rather run the files on certain folders for my portable drive. I've already changed permissions and made myself owner for the files but it seems it won't accept it and it's giving me off an error still saying that access is denied.
I've searched high and low on how to solve this but nothing seems to work.
- I tried the registry trick to "Take Ownership" and it didn't work
- Also tried various (advanced)security settings to allow/deny etc. No dice.
**Last option would be to reformat my portable drive and then just recover the emails again, will the permissions/ownership reset if I try to format the drive? Since deleting them is out of the option since I don't have "permission" for those folders/files.

Some folders won't open, is this a virus or a trojan on my PC? My PC seems to be running fine, starts-up and turns off fast.
This isn't just it though some folders have Desktop.ini in them. There's no unknown files running in the processor or anything either.

Jul 31, 2014I am running windows 8 on a dell xps pc. I have 2 large 3tb and 4tb external seagate drives. After a day or so they lose part of the connection. You can see the drive and folders a couple of levels deep but you can't see files. If you unplug and start again everything is there. On other machines it's not a problem. When you try to eject usb hardware it displays that something is accessing the device. So it's not the drive, it's a driver or something else.

Aug 9, 2012I have tried everything setting up Win 8 for sharing files over a wired network setup as a Workgroup. I set the permissions on the folder containing videos to Everyone has permission to read and write. Boxee Box can see the folders, but not the files. I am using BitDefender 2013 and I have disabled Firewall and Anti Virus.
Windows 8 was installed on top of Win 7 (where Boxee could see the videos). Is Win 8 different than Win 7 as regard to sharing and permissions?
User Files On 64GB MicroSD Card - Include Folders Into Relevant Libraries
Feb 19, 2014I have an Asus Transformer that comes with a 30GB SSD and 8.1 - so space is at a premium. I put my user files on a 64GB MicroSD card and was trying to Include the folders into the relevant libraries. That works well when I do it and the SD folder shows under e.g. Documents. But when I go back later to Explorer, it is nowhere to be seen.
Then I try to include it once more, but at that time it says that the folder is already included. Where is it hiding. The folders are accessible via the SD card though.

Nov 23, 2013I upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 and I can no longer see the files inside the folders on my networked drive. Before I upgraded I could see them, after the upgrade - not so much. The folders are fine, I can see them, just no files visible. There's no network issues as the files are visible from my Win7 machines and my wife's Windows 8 machine. All the standard default sharing and viewing settings are correct. Even if I put the direct path in File Explorer is tells me there's nothing there. I'm absolutely baffled. I have never seen this particular type of sharing issue before. I'm a pretty savvy Network Admin so the basic troubleshooting (and standard sharing settings) has been covered.
