Accounts :: Acer Laptop / Windows 8 - Password Not Accepted On Startup
Apr 22, 2013
I have Windows 8 pre-installed on an Acer laptop. I have a specific password that I use on start up. However, I turned off the computer without using a proper shutdown and somehow the password has been changed because the computer will not accept the password I have used from the very beginning.
Unfortunately, although I live in Vancouver BC most of the time, I am currently in Basel, Switzerland until the end of May and I believe any record of my Windows 25 character code is in Vancouver; thus, I doubt I'll be able to restore Windows until I get back there.
I've been reading your forums and I gather that getting into safe mode in the Acer in Windows 8 is not easy. I've tried doing it the way the documentation says to no avail. I am able to get to system settings but do not find any way to bypass the startup password code.
With all the fiddling around I have done, now the cursor arrow doesn't show and I have to use <Tab> to move around the screen to restart. I restart with the <Shift> key down and that gets me into a mode where I can troubleshoot.

I have my Windows 8.1 PC's password policy set so that a password is not required when waking from sleep/shutdown. I used to be able to wake the PC from sleep and not put in a password, and I could turn the PC on after a shutdown without having to put in a password either. Since last week, though, when I turn my PC on, it will boot to the Windows loading screen and after loading for a bit, it will jump into the login screen and immediately report a login error that the username or password is incorrect. This happens before I even get a chance to type a username or password. The fact that I have to type in the username and password is strange because I have the PC set to bypass that option.

I have Vista with shared files and folders but when I click on the PC shown in computers or do a run //pctosharewithneame
I receive a username and PW entry box.
On my Vista I do not log in with a PW. My account name is HOME and has no PW and it is set up as Adminwhch may be different than a machine admin-not sure.
I assume that would be the user name would be home. But Home and no PW was not accepted by the Win 8 machine for the Vista machine

My computer died on me so I have jut got an Acer Aspire XC100 which I am pleased with though admit I'm struggling with Windows 8 so I am reverting back to desktop as much as possible.
When I get to Microsoft welcome/ log in page I use the password I created on registration and it's rejected time and time again until eventually it's accepted, this happens with my Windows Live password too.

My computer recently began requiring me to use password at startup. I had previously disabled.
I went to NETPLWIZ as suggested elsewhere (Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup)
However, there is no box to uncheck that says "Users must enter username and password to use this computer." (see attachment)
What am I missing? I have also checked the Password Requirement on Wakeup in the Power settings and that shows "No" and the "Ctrl-Alt-Del" option is also not in place.

I removed the password login screen on my wife's Windows 8 laptop, so the laptop boots up to the Desktop with no login requirement. She no longer has Administrator privileges. Control Panel/User Accounts show a password protected Administrator user and Local Account Password protected Administrator user.
I want to run Chkdsk since her HD has a read sector problem but need full Administrator privileges to do so.
How do I restore the password protected Administrator logins?

I see the write-up on how to make a password reset disk on a USB flash memory stick. But is there a way to make a password reset disk on a CD?
WHAT I DID:
1. Inserted a blank CD in the optical drive.
2. Opened control panel and clicked "User Accounts". But in the left panel there is no option "Create a password reset disk". All I see are:
Control Panel HomeManage your credentialsManage your file encryption certificatesConfigure advanced user profile propertiesChange my environment variables.
Do I HAVE TO insert a USB stick to see the password reset option? (I don't have a spare USB stick to test with)

Have a question regarding "Local Account". I'm having problems connecting to the Win 8 laptop from Win 7 as it will not accept my sign in credentials. With that, am I to assume that this is because the credential aren't "Local", and thus this is what this is for???
It will not accept the "Microsoft" account I use to log into Win 8 laptop.
With that, if I choose to go with the "local account" can I easily switch back to the Microsoft one?

I set up the user account using my Microsoft email account. I would like to use a different password on my desktop vs the email password. My email password since it is accessible via web is strong 16 characters long, random characters password and changed often. I would like to change the desktop password to something I can remember, still strong, but I don't change it as often since you have to get physical access to my desktop.
I assumed once I linked to the Microsoft account I could change the password on the machine without it changing my email password.
Is this not possible? I would prefer not to have to lower the security of my email account just to accommodate Windows 8. Never a problem before as my email clients stored the password.

I have an Acer M5-581T laptop with windows 8.1 (windows 8 was already installed when this laptop was bought) and has been running fine since i received it. Last night I accidentally dropped the the right hand side of my computer about 2 or 3 inches but no more. I didn't think anything of it until this morning when i tried to start up my computer and was successful until when i tried to open an application on my desktop and my computer froze. Also when i started up my computer i heard a scratching or cracking sound in the right hand side and this continued for the nect couple times i tried to restart my computer.
So, after it froze I restarted my computer just by holding the power button and upon turning it on again after the Acer start up screen i got the message "No bootable device. Hit any key." in a blue box. Hitting any key did nothing obviously. After some research i was able to press F2 and open up BIOS but with messing around with the settings and even changing in secure mode from UEFI and Legacy BIOS doesn't seem to work. Pressing control+alt+delete doesnt work, it only restarts my laptop. I haven't really done anything like try to change my laptop from windows 8 to windows 7 so it is still windows 8.1.

I followed the steps here: Password Protection on Wakeup - Enable or Disable in Windows 8
It works, but after a reboot and stand-by after a certain amount of time, the option resets itself. This started 1 month or 2 ago.
Also, i notice that in one place it says password wake up is on and another place says it is off.

I just did a clean install of 8.1. The first install didn't ask me to fill a password. It just flashed the sign in with my picture and went into windows destop. With the reinstall I must have did something different when setting it up. Now, Theres a splash screen with some sort of windows default, with the time in big letters on the bottom left and a small icon I have to click on. Then it brings me to that screen with my picture, with my hotmail email address, and now I have to type in my hotmail password, then it goes into windows desktop. I do not want to do this. I want to turn on the computer come back a minute later, and theres my desktop. I found this website [URL] .... and tried the steps there but It seems there really isn't an answer for me and I'm a little gun-shy in doing whats in that page to allow me to log on to desktop without a pass word.
I really don't want to set up another user account and I don't want to be nagged by a new password and of course the famous you don't have administrator access in the future. I just want to turn on the computer wait a minute see my picture flash at me and then automatically to the desktop.

solution to make automatic log on on windows startup.
(like local account just as Microsoft account)
So I took the tutorial Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup .
And after doing the steps, I'm having the setting set up for using automatic log on.
After re-log to windows it still asks me for a password...
So how i make it work to automatic log in without asking the password?

Yesterday I did a few things on laptop, nothing special. Shut down the laptop, girlfriend tried to log in a few hours later and upon entering her password she gets kicked back out to the login screen.
Booted mini windows xp from hirensbootcd, checked registery and nothing fancy there in the winlogon strings.
I did manage to enable the guest account and add an extra administrator account. The guest account works (no taskbar tho) but everything else seemed to work. The freshly made admin account did not work, same story as my girlfriends account, enter password > back to login screen.

Win 8.1 Pro x64. All of a sudden SyncBack Pro is asking me for a Windows password when I go to change the backup schedule. I thought I knew it, but it and all the variations I can think of have failed and I can't find the paper I wrote it down on at the moment. I thought I was in a local/admin account as I was in Win 8, but UA shows this as a Admin account, PW protected. That's probably why there is no "Create a Password Reset Disk" option showing on the left or anywhere on my User Accounts page (vs. Brink's tutorial). See screenshot.

When I did a clean install of Windows 8, I simply left the password field blank. The computer is a single user and in Windows 8 mode it starts up automatically with no sign in or password required. Same when it wakes from a monitor shutdown. No sign in or password needed.
Will that remain the same when I upgrade to 8.1? Is there any way to force it to be that way?

I have recently set up a Win 8.1 notebook and from a cold boot Win comes up with a confusion by showing part of my email address as user (a hangover from a MS account) but, after saying that the username is incorrect, then allows me to enter my local account / network creds.
I decided that, since the machine could go on the road from time to time, I would reintroduce the need for username and password. I would like to tidy up this mixed-up situation by having to enter my local account details and not have this 'error' message from dear old MS pop up. Having part of my email address appear on bootup is hardly useful in terms of security.

Win 8.1 .... Switch to a Microsoft account on this PC. The password you entered is incorrect. Try again.
Can make the password visible, it is correct. Running no version of webroot. Restore the computer to a time when the password worked, it never has even though it is correct for signing into my account on the micro website. Changed my password and still no success.

I just bought a new Windows 8 Dell Vostro 5470 laptop. I signed in with my Live account, which I use on my main computer everyday.
I upgraded into Windows 8.1, and set up fingerprint authentication as well. I didn't have a problem signing in with it, nor with my 12-character password (which I used today on my PC to log in).
Last night I locked the laptop (from the ctrl+alt+del screen) and left it. By the time I got back, it went into hibernation or something. Meaning to say, it looked turned off. I didn't touch it until today.
When I turn it back on today, I couldn't sign in. Neither the fingerprint wasn't working, nor my password - but then on a closer look, I saw that I couldn't enter more than 9 characters in the password field! Restart didn't work. Reminder - my password is 12 characters long and I used it just the day before.
Disclaimer: this is a brand new laptop, nothing is installed on it. The only things I did with it were Windows Update, upgrade to 8.1, set up fingerprint log-in and surf the web a little bit. I don't mind totally resetting everything, I just don't know how to do it.

I got an issue with my logging Windows 8.1 account. When I log in it tells me that my password is incorrect and I should go to windows.live.com/refresh and I did. But when I change my password it tells me the same thing like it haven't even change nothing. I try using my Windows 8 CD that I have and I did an automatic repair and it tells me this.
"Log File E:WINDOWSSystem32LogfileSrtSrtTrail.txt"
At that point I try to change my way of solving this and I went to system restore. I choose the date time I want it to restore my system to see if that fixed anything, but nothing still. I know it has to be with my password or something with my account which is odd, because I never had to link my microsoft account with my PC (if that is the case) But at this point I am again clueless. I even try pressing the F8 when I restart my system to being able to access my computer in a safe mode but it doesn't do a thing.
