May 31, 2014upgraded to Windows 8.1 (from Windows 7) a few days ago and I really love flight simulation. I have noticed that while I am playing Flight Simulator X, my computer in general starts to get pretty laggy (Moving windows, typing etc).
I have an i7 2600 (oc 3.9ghz), HD6780 and 16GB of ram installed. I opened up task manager to find that 7.4GB of ram is being used out of 8.5. But it says it is only using 47%!
I might be reading this all wrong, but I believe this is the reason why my computer's performance drops when I use close to 8.5 GB of RAM.

Turned Off Monitor And Can't Turn It On Again?
Nov 11, 2012I installed the win 8 upgrade on my desktop yesterday. I have two monitors connected but only one of them was working, even though I upgraded the drivers for the graphicscard, I wasn't able to enable the other monitor. This is, however, not my problem.. As part of me trying to figure it out, I hit the "Devices" button in the menu and disabled the only monitor on there. I thought it was the one which wasn't working, but it turned out to be the one already working, so now none of the monitors are on and how to get them working again.
I'm guess that I'm looking for some sort of a keyboard shortcut to enable the monitor again.

Dec 7, 2013I just purchased a Dell Ultrabook that came with Window 8. I went to the Windows store and did the upgrade to 8.1. I've read a number of articles saying that encryption is turned on by default on a clean install of 8.1 but not necessarily on an upgrade. From some of the articles I've read, I should be able to see whether my device is encrypted on the PC Info page (see attached). I do not believe it is encrypted but I don't know for sure.
I've always used TrueCrypt on my previous devices but won't bother if my new device is already encrypted.

Oct 19, 2013It says it's been turned off and it's not monitoring the computer, I can't turn it on either unless I'm not doing something right. McAfee internet security suite was on the laptop when I brought, is it because of that? Should I just remove it?
Is windows defender good security on it's own or do I need more than just that? I've downloaded malwarebytes anti-malware?

Mar 10, 2014I'm running windows 8.1 on my asus x550 laptop,the issue is windows firewall can't be turned off, and when it is on it blocks everything including the browsers and also kaspersky antivirus 2014.
I use tiny wall instead of the default firewall,the problem is when I turn off the windows firewall, it switches off ,but comes back on automatically in about 2 mins and blocks all internet access again.So I decided to manually disable the service from, local services that doesn't work either,it says if I do that even tiny firewall will go off.

How can the action center tell me I am not protected while at the same time Norton tells me I am?

Jan 9, 2013I've noticed sometimes when I first powerup my windows 8 machine, it turns on, but I get no display on my monitor (has happened with 2 monitors). I am using the latest beta ATI drivers for my card. The weird thing is, pressing delete i dont even get the bios to appear, just a black/dark monitor screen. I am wondering if repairing the bootloader could fix this? How to repair the bootloader? I won't loose any of my data, will I?
After turning off, turning on the computer a few times, I finally get display and can get into windows 8, but it's annoying.

Dec 9, 2013My Windows Defender is turned off. I was able to click around enough until I found an area that told me that McAfee is controlling this. I don't want McAfee. But when I try to bring up or right click on Windows Defender I get a pop up that tells me it is turned off and it won't let me do anything.

Aug 11, 2013Recently my monitor stopped responding after being turned off (after 15 minutes). It didn't happen before. I don't know what to do. Should I disable turning off the monitor altogether? I lose all my work when this happens because the only way to get the laptop working again is to press the power button which restarts the computer although the settings are actually that it should go into hibernation when I press the power button, which it does if the display is working, but if it stops responding it restarts the laptop. No other keys work or do anything when this happens.

Problem:- Can't switch on wifi. The on/off switch is grayed out. While troubleshooting, it says, " wireless capability is turned off".
Solutions Tried:- Re-installed drivers provided by lenovo's website.
Re-installed drivers by windows update.
Reset settings in Bios to default values.
Yes the physical switch is on and the indicator light is glowing.
Fn+ F5 just toggles on/off airplane mode.
Disabled the option so that power management doesn't switches off wifi to save battery.
Other numerous solutions on internet.
The wifi worked flawlessly in windows 7. I even used it as a hotspot (via cmd method).
Maintenance :: System Restore Gets Turned Off Unexpectedly
Oct 25, 2013Reloaded my computer and downloaded apps...and 2 times I received a different redirect virus and the first thing it does is turn off the system restore and wipe out any restore points. Then, I am screwed...
I always uncheck all the extra stuff like toolbars apps like to get you to download. The last app that did this was the weather channel app.
My question is, how can I configure system restore to require a password to disable it which a virus may not look for? Or anything to keep system restore intact ?
It is too easy for these virus' to keep folks from restoring.
Some Desktop Icons Turned Into A Default Icon
Nov 9, 2013I got a nasty Malware program "WeCare" from the Imgburn Install (I think) and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to get rid of all the stuff it put in the registry. That seemed to work. I also ran CCleaner a couple of times. Again that seemed to work. However, now SOME of the shortcuts that I created for standalone programs - IBT, HWinfo, Prime95, SSDLife, and RegEdit show as a blank page with the upper right corner folded. I have also run into this issue on a W7 system but managed to force Windows to pick up an Icon from a different source. What file can I delete that would cause Windows to rebuild the Desktop Icons?
I found a .bat file that deletes the Icon Cache and rebuilds it. That solves my immediate issue...but...still curious on who or what caused specific Icons to go to default or whatever.

How To Enter BIOS When Fast Startup Is Turned On
Jul 31, 2014I have a desktop with Windows 8 upgraded to 8.1, I can enter the BIOS setup by pressing the DEL key only when the preceding shutdown is a complete shutdown (shutdown with fast startup turned off).
If the desktop is shutdown with fast startup turned on (incomplete shutdown), and Windows cannot be loaded during the subsequent starting. How can I enter the BIOS to select to boot from a USB stick?
Turned On Laptop - Cannot See Apps Screen Or Desktop
May 19, 2013Today when I turned on my laptop the screen was black, not showing a thing. With no options to solve this I rebooted the laptop by pressing the power button for a few seconds.
When I restarted the laptop it started and shown the username/password screen. I input my password and then a pop up window appeared with an error related to explorer.exe
I cannot see the apps screen or the desktop. The desktop is just a black screen with a grey bar. I can access windows explorer by clicking "windows key + E" but I cannot do anything else.
Now every time I start my laptop, the error does not come up, I input my password and I don't see apps screen or desktop.
No Taskbar Nor Metro View When Computer Turned On
Sep 29, 2013Suddenly i turned on my computer and wrote the password of my user then screen just turned black and nothing came up (not desktop view nor the metro view). Then i moved the mouse and i could see the pointer on the screen so i thought maybe i am on the desktop view (i still guess that's it) but the taskbar from below doesn't show up. I clicked on my keyboard "Windows" button which makes my laptop go to Metro View but it did nothing. All i can do is move the pointer around and use the task manager. Throught the task manager i can open folders, apps etc... but obviously my windows is broken and i dont know how to fix it.
I tried to create a new task (in task manager) "explorer.exe" that did not work.
Win 8.1 - System Time Incorrect When Fast Startup Turned On
Jan 15, 2014Windows 8.1 ... Noticed shortly after upgrading the Asus VivoTab Smart to Windows 8.1 (from Windows 8) -- that sometimes the system's date and time will be incorrect after a shut-down, turn on cycle. Sometimes the clock is as fast as three hours, but others much longer. Interestingly, if you go into PC Settings > Time & Settings and then toggle off the "Set time automatically" option, and then toggle it back on, the time and date are immediately corrected. However, the time would again be wrong after a shutdown. If the tablet is restarted, though, the time is correct again.
THE SYSTEM: Windows 8.1 (upgraded from Windows Store). Intel Atom processor.
WHAT'S BEEN TRIED: I:
1. Stopped the Windows Time service, registered it again and restated it. The issue remained. I entered the desktop and clicked on the time in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. From here I confirmed the time zone was correct and changed the date and time. That fixes the problem during the current session, but the time/date are again wrong on reboot.
2. Tried Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, the time is correct and stays correct.
3. Tried Clean Boot. In Clean Boot, with all non-Microsoft services disables, the issue returns and the time is wrong again.
THE BREAKTHROUGH THAT BEGS FOR AN ANSWER: While reading this thread, I read up on Windows 8's Fast Startup. Just on a lark, I went into the Power settings area of the Control Panel and turned off Fast Startup. Now the clock is correct. There's a downside , of course, to this in that shutdown and startup is notably slower.
The tablet now keeps perfect time -- but cannot have Fast Startup - which is a bummer for a tablet.
QUESTIONS:
1. Is this is hardware issue? Asus is offering an RMA -- but hate to add to a landfill when this is fixable with software.
2. Is there a way to check the BIOS clock on a Windows 8.1 tablet ? I believe it's a UEFI system....
3. Is there a way to fix this so fast startup can be used -- and have correct time?
4. Is this a known issue?
5. Is there a way to make sure the Windows Time service is activated in a Fast Startup.

Nov 5, 2013On PC, has a problem with the PS2 keyboard and mouse staying on after the PC is turned off...the lights are still on.
The only thing different when I had it was the keyboard and muse and the OS....I use a logitech G510 and a Razer DeathAdder, both USB and the OS was 7 Ultimate 64 bit. My sons system is running 7 Pro 64 bit and using an old OEM HP keyboard/mouse.

Feb 9, 2014I bought a computer in December from powernotebooks, but its a sager. I get random blue screens mostly when gaming but sometimes even when on desktop or surfing the web. When the Nvidia card is turned off, and the onboard one is only running, the computer will never crash, when I turn the NVidia on the crashes are almost immediate.

Windows 8.1 - Startup Apps Won't Start If Monitor / TV Is Turned Off
Sep 22, 2013My system os is windows 8.1. I connect to this system remotely regularly. When it is off, I turn it on remotely with WOL and it autologins into windows.
This computer is connected to a LG LED TV through HDMI port.
My issue is, whenever the TV is off, and I turn on the computer (remotely or locally), system boots up fine but the start up apps (those that I have put in Windows startup folder) won't start. As soon as I turn on the TV, windows will start running those start up apps. Needless to say that if the TV is on and I boot into wondows, start up apps start normally with no problem.
Whatever I tried has failed on me. I even tried to turn off windows 8 Fast Startup in power options but it didn't work. I originally had this issue in windows 8. So I installed windows 8.1 hoping that this issue would be gone but it has not. I tried windows server 2012. In server 2012, this issue does not exist and I have no problem with startup apps.
Network / Sharing :: No Internet Connection When Main PC Is Turned Off
May 30, 2013I am currently having an issue with my network. Basically, every time my main PC is shut off, the wireless will drop it's internet connection. Devices will still connect to the wireless, but there will be no internet connection.
This had happened before, about 5 months ago, and I had fixed it by unchecking the TCP/IPv6 in my network adapter but now the same issue has come up. My main PC is wired direct to the router, which is a D-link DIR-655. As long as my PC is on, then the internet will work fine. If it is off, then at some point the connection will get dropped and not come back on until my PC is turned on again.
Security :: Action Center Says Virus Protection Turned Off
Jul 26, 2013I recently had to do a factory restore on my system. I reinstalled Norton Internet Security using the existing product key I have. Today my action center says virus protection turned off;
I hit view Antivirus apps and this comes up
I click on Norton Internet Security then click turn on, this is what pops up
I click on yes, I trust this publisher to run this app, However nothing happens. It still says that Norton Internet Security is turned off. I went into Norton Internet Security, it says that my system is secure and even ran a full system scan for good measure.
Is there a reason why action center is saying that antivirus protection is turned off?
