Unable To Eject Usb?
Aug 31, 2012
I'm using win 7 64 bit and every time I try to eject my usb, a message show up informing me that something is still using it. I checked with task manager and find no such thing. I scanned my comp and didn't find any virus.Even if I just plug it in and do nothing, I still got the same problem. If I just yank it out or pick the continue anyway option, the data becomes partly corrupt.

I got a new Seagate 500GB HD (sorry about the wrong thread title). For the first two weeks or so, I could eject my HD through "Safely Remove" but since then I get the usual "Generic volume is still in use" message, inspite of closing all processes that might possibly be using it.I keep the HD connected to my PC virtually all the time, even when I shut down and reboot. But every now and then, I need to disconnect it. And to do that, I have to shut down the computer first and then disconnect it.Whenever I update Windows, I see that a temporary folder is created in the HD while the updates are being downloaded which has led me to think that a process uses the HD but I can't find out which one it is and how to terminate it properly. There are no problems when I use the HD in other computers.

It happened on my 2 computers, so it might be a bug:
When the system (through the USB icon) refuses to eject for some reason an USB stick, the icon disappears and doesnt come back even on computer restart. It comes back however when a new USB stick is put in, but not in regular "Customize" process or by itself.
It happened in 7057 build, I didnot check with the other builds.
Could anyone confirm this, too?

I often open content on my (Toshiba) portable hard drive from applications on the local hard drive. In WinXP, I didn't have any problems ejecting the portable drive once I was done and closed the application. ...To be clear, when I did get an "in use" error message, I would simply go into Task Manager and see what offending application processes were still running; once they were stopped, the drive ejected.
Now on Windows 7, the system will not let me properly eject the drive even though the Task Manager shows that I have no applications open on the computer. Each time I try, whether from the taskbar icon or the Devices window, it gives the message that the device cannot be ejected at this time because it's in use. As DaPiit said, this is really annoying because attaching and ejecting USB devices is something I do many times per day! The Windows 7 is not on my machine - I still run WinXP, and this more than anything else is making me REALLY consider finally switching to a Mac instead. (And I've been a Windows user for over 15 years...)
Is there some Windows process that needs to be stopped that I don't know about? I'm really reluctant to just "pull the plug" every time I need to remove the drive.

So I have a Dell studio, I use to run Ubuntu 10.04 on there and I re-installed Windows 7 on there. The problem is my disc drive has a button on the key board to eject the disc cause my I don't have the disc tray I have the slot on the side where you just slide the disc in, since I have re installed Windows 7 it has not worked so I was hoping someone could tell me how to set the button up to where it is the eject button. I know I can right click on the disc in computer and click on eject but if possible I would like by eject button to work properly.

Whenever I try to eject a certain external hard drive using the little icon in the task window, I get a message that it is in use. I am very careful to be sure it is not in use but still get the message. This is a data storage disc. I am not aware of any programs on it that may be running in the background. Is there a way to examine a disc to see just what is being used on it at any given time?

When I insert a disk, the OS reads it correctly, and I can do whatever with it. However when I remove it, Windows still shows the disk is inserted, and inserting another disk causes any program that tries to access it to hang indefinitely (including individual windows explorer instances).
After several hours of google and trying various fixes (including removing the drivers for the dvd-drive and ATA Channel 0-5, disabling windows native burn capabilities, uninstalling CyberLink PowerDVD 8 and Nero Express 9, and everything in this thread), I've got it so that the drive recognizes a single removal of CD/DVD and insertion of a new CD/DVD, however the second time it still gets stuck.
I'm on an Alienware m17x with a TS-T633A DVDRW.

Tonight my desktop stopped working. Up until tonight it was running perfectly as far as I could tell. The only thing that I had noticed about it over the last week or two is the power supply sounded like it was running a little harder/louder than usual and somtimes the noise it made would get louder and then lower and louder and lower sorta like an engine revving up and down but not to an extent that one would raise their eyebrows at it or suspect anything.Tonight I was in the process of visiting the AMD website with the intention of updating the drivers for my video card when the computer rebooted. This process occurred 3 more times over then span of the next 10 minutes..once right after windows had completed bootup and the desktop had loaded, and then 2 more times after bootup and I had logged back onto the Internet. After that final 3rd time I turned the computer off entirely. I clicked the on/off switch on the power supply off and unplugged it. I tried clearing CMOS by resetting the CMOS battery at this time. I then plugged the power supply back in and clicked the on/off switch back on. I go to turn the computer back on and now it will not post. No beebs, no video signal.
I am still getting power to all of the various fans and the DVD-RW burnner turns on and will eject and close. The only thing that I have noticed not working at this time (aside from the lack of post, and ect.) is that the blue light that lights up the on/off button to my mid tower and the hdd light is not working anymore.I have tried reseating everything in the computer twice now but the results are still the same in the computer still won't post anymore.

Does anyone know of a program that allows for you to single-click eject a USB hub and which will eject all the devices connected to it safely? As I understand you can set the policies of the individual devices such that you dont have to do the "Safe Eject" anyways. But Id like a way to just eject the hub instead of ejecting the 2 drives I have connected to it.

I've got a Seagate Free Agent Pro external drive (currently connected via eSATA), which solidly refuses to disconnect from the system, using the "safe disconnect" dance.
Whenever I try, after a pause I get the error message: "This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again." I have tried closing just about everything down, but the message still appears.
1) Is there a way to tell if my drive is actually in use? Can I tell which program is using the drive?
2) Can I force-disconnect the drive in such a way that any pending writes are completed? (i.e., not just disconnecting the cable and hoping for the best)
Before you ask, I did look for device-specific drivers on Seagate's web site. No luck. There's some disk management utilities to help manage backups and/or syncs, but no drivers.

Does anyone know how to make an eject button on the desktop for the CD Burner? My CD Burner's button is recalcitrant and I'd prefer not to have to start up my Nero to eject the disk.

I am running Windows 7, and I connect several external HDDs via a USB hub, leading to the PC on a single USB cable. I have recently installed Windows, and from the start, I have had problems ejecting the media. Here is how it goes:I plug in the disks, they are all functioning, they show up and can be used.I want to eject them so I can disconnect the cable. I go to the system tray, and must click the "show hidden icons" arrow to see the icon for "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media"; I click it and choose one of the disks to eject. Upon doing so, the disk ejects, and I remove it.At that point, the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon moves to the main system ray area (not hidden)--but from this point on, it does not work. No matter how I click or right-click, there is no pop-up menu, no reaction at all. Right-clicking on each drive in the "Computer" window does not reveal any option to eject the disk safely.

Very strange issue with certain compact flash cards being transferred to computer. I have 4 Lexar USB 3.0 CF card readers attached to a HighPoint 4 port USB 3.0 card. When transferring a 1000X CF card I have no problems. Certain cards like a 600X card will transfer fine but when it gets down to 10 files remaining out of over 600 it ejects and then an error pops up saying can't read from volume. In the meantime the card remounts!!! If I hit continue the card dismounts again only to remount. Very bizarre that it always does it at the very last 10 files. I haven't been able to narrow it down to which cards or types just yet. Kinda just started happening. I do have Diskkeeper installed and also Nero. Read some random stuff about Nero messing with certain volumes.

Running Windows 7 on Asus EeePC 1000H netbook. After coming out of sleep mode, I often lose my bluetooth mouse connection and I always find that Windows 7 will no longer release any USB drive that is plugged into the laptop.Deleting the bluetooth entry for the mouse and then adding it again seems to work, but its a PITA. I also note that when adding a bluetooth device Windows 7 always connects to the MS driver database and downloads the latest driver - so it appears to be a driver issue?Nothing fixes the USB drive eject problem but a shutdown. Both work fine prior to sleep mode.

I've had a Windows 7 computer for several days now. Every time I want to remove a USB from a slot, I do the 'Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media'. But it then tells me "This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the deice and then try again. Some of the USB's I just look at to see what was on them before trying to remove them. The last one was when I did a 'Datasafe Local Backup' When I tried to remove it, I was given the "this device is in use message...'.

I've looked for driver updates on Gateways website for my PS/2 keyboard. Alas there are none. I even had a live chat w/ support and they said since my computer was no longer under warranty I had to pay for extended cust. serv. He said it was an issue w/ the upgrade but refused to give me any more details. I've been in the device manger and checked for driver updates but it says the drivers are up to date. Every key but my Eject key works. Even the volume buttons right next to the eject button!

I have an ASUS N51Vf on which I just changed a defective hard drive with a new one, same size and specs as the old. After a clean windows 7 install all was working fine. I created a System Restore Point. No errors reported, restore point created.I then tried to restore all my data and settings with a back up I had on a external hard drive. This back up has been made with LaCie Genie Back up Assistant, a program with decent review online. After having finished to restore the back up, I was asked to restart windows, which I did. Windows restarted but then it failed to log in giving an error (which appears to be quite common googling it). A window pop up saying "Interactive logon process initialization has failed. Please consult the event log for more details."If you say ok the windows keeps appearing again and again. There was no way to access windows whatever mode (safe, normal and all the other boot option appearing when pressing f8) I choosed. Startup repair was as well ineffective (since there was no problem in the startup process itself.)
People online reported the only way to fix this was to check the event log files on another computer. So I installed Ubuntu on the unallocated space I left when installing win 7, I copied the logs files, I went through all the errors in the event viewer of another computer, particularly those in application.evtx, I copied safe version of winlogon.exe logonUI.exe and userInit.exe on windows/system32 through Ubuntu but nothing worked. Same error preventing log in.I then went into the System Restore Point nasty affair. As I previously mentioned, I created this point prior to restore the LaCie backup. The Restore point was there, accessible through the standard recovery options. What appears is this: standard final window of System Restore and I couldn't select any of this drive and proceed. So I go to the Command Prompt and I realize that windows has been installed on D:, not on C:, which appears to be the system reserved partition with 70Mb free. Something standard when you install Windows 7 apparently. Since my backup was made copying files from C: and I didn't care for the path when restoring my LaCie backup, I thought I messed up things attempting to copy to the wrong drive, even though no error was reported to me.So I formatted everything, reinstalled windows paying attention not to create other partitions. Clean install, all went through fine. I check on Computer what's the windows unit label, and it is C indeed. I didn't check for the presence of other partitions. I re-restore files from the LaCie Backup. At the end I try to create a new System Restore point, but a weird error tells me that I can't. Already suspicious, I restart, to find myself on the exact same position as before, unable to login, unable to restore (both same as previously described) and, moreover, checking through command prompt, win 7 appears to be in the D: unit again with the C: set up to be the system reserved!!

Unable to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." The dialog box itself doesn't show how big the file is or the download speed or the time left. I also keep getting a message saying a program has corrutped my program setting.
