As opposed to just the hard disk that the partition is on? For example, would I be able to create a small partition on my C drive then go into the BIOS and set it as my primary boot device?
View 8 RepliesI have a laptop that I have set-up with 3 OS's; windows 7 (to use), windows 8 (to learn), and Linux (to do everything else). The other day I noticed a few issues and decided I needed to remove windows 8 and Ubuntu in order to prevent a system crash (kinda ironic once you read the whole thing). When I installed Ubuntu and windows 8, I created a 45gb partition for them. Not a big deal. The problem is when I removed ubuntu/windows 8 and their partition, I forgot to set something with the windows 7 partition so it was the main boot partition. Now its trying to boot from a partition on the hard disk that doesn't exist. I know for a fact that the windows partition is completely functional and intact. It's a rookie mistake and I make no excuses. At this point I'm 90% sure I need to reinstall windows 7, which I can easily do as I have restore disks and multiple back-ups. I was just curious if there is a way to change this either through BIOS or using a USB/SATA cable to externally boot and access Windows 7 system files.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI forgot my windows password, so I created an Ophcrack ISI Image DVD. When I try this the bios shows my DVD drive in the list of bootable devices, and I select it, save changes, and exit bios, the computer then tries to boot from the hard drive (not the DVD drive selected) and obviously starts up asking for my windows password which I do not have. WHY won't the bios allow me to change the bootable drive to DVD?

But what it does say is "Reboot and Select proper boot device. Or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key". I am assuming, since I cant enter the bios too tell it where to boot from, Id just put in the Operating System disc and let it install itself. When it says "boot media" it means the Operating System right?

The BIOS boot priority is 1# Dvd Player and 2# Harddrive (so it detects both).It's also a SATA harddrive so I don't need to do anything with jumpers.Then when I insert the Windows 7 DVD it outputs the following error:reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected The PC is new and got build at a store so the only thing I need to do is install the software.

I just changed my PSU and upgraded my graphics card today. I tried booting it up and it came up with this message "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key."I'm pretty sure I got all the cables in correctly and I only have one harddrive. No externals.By the way, I don't have my windows 7 CD because I let a friend borrow it and I won't be able to get it back for some time. However, I do have a Windows XP CD if that helps in any way.

If I do not do this a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.." comes up, and just keeps popping up regardless of what I press! I would try using my boot disk but for the life of me I can't find it, and as windows 7 was already installed on this computer when we got it 3 year ago, I can't accurately recall if it came with one!I am no expert on BIOS, but I have read other problems similar to this one, and know that if I don't have the boot disk or the OS disk, I will need to know that at least.I am curious if the (Hard drive) is the issue. The BIOS tells me that anything in parentheses is disabled from corresponding type menu.

On reboot I sometimes get this message and have to reboot again. However, when I leave it on overnight (usually when it is downloading something big), when I wake up in the morning I am greeted with a black screen with the words:"Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"When this happens I simply press the power button a few seconds to turn it off, then turn it on again and it boots normally. (pressing a key only results in the message being repeated)What infuriates me is that it only ever happens when I leave it on overnight so I don't know when and how exactly it occurs but it almost always does. Like I said earler, it never does this when I am using it as it works fine otherwise. It just won't stay on overnight when I need it to.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have windows 7 pro as my default OS on a 1T internal hard drive. Some of my games won't work so I partitioned my hard drive 50 gigs, and have installed windows xp on that partition. Of course I inserted the XP disk, went into the bio's and switched the boot order of my computer to CD (for now). Installed xp, and it work. But when I restarted it, It just goes directly to XP, It doesn't give me a list on which Os to boot off of or anything. I went to start and typed in msconfig. and it only saw XP, although there were other things there i did not recognize.
So I inserted the windows 7 disk and restarted computer off disk and selected "repair" and I am back on 7, but I can go back on XP any time I want, (just simple insert the XP disk). Anyways when I'm in windows 7 and I type in msconfig in the search bar, it only see's windows 7 Os, current and default OS. So I have two OS on a partitioned hard drive, no boot selective boot up. And I cant access one or the other without the boot up disk. Is there a way to select which one i want to boot up?
I'm trying to install Windows 7 to a rebuilt machine but it won't run from the SATA CD drive. Message is' Reboot and select proper boot device ' The CD drive is first boot priority and the HDD is blank. The CD drive appears in the BIOS boot list.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi was on the internet and it seemed windows crashed everything said not responding then wouldn't load. So felt that i had no other choice but to switch off the PC as it had stayed like this for a long time, when i came to reboot i got a message saying 'Reboot or select proper boot device' I am using an Acer Aspire X3450 PC and don't have the recovery disk but i do have an Acer Aspire laptop with the disk, when i put that in the PC it loads up giving me the option to Restore but it wont let me select it or highlight it. So downloaded a copy of windows 7 as a torrent and burned it to a disk in the hope i could re-install windows. This will allow to go into options like startup repair but wont repair anything as it will only seem to recognise the OS on the disk. So i removed the disk and all that happens is the same reboot error. I can't re-install windows as it will not allow me to.

I have Windows 7 on my primary drive and XP on my secondary drive. I still use XP as I'm in the process of transferring all my program install files etc to an external USB then I will put them on windows 7. I was able to manually select which OS I wanted the system to boot into by simply pressing ESC button during POST and then the boot menu would come up. Press your down arrow on keyboard and then you boot into XP no problem.
It is worth mentioning since that I actually went into BIOS and enabled "smart boot" which brought that menu up automatically so I no longer had to press ESC. So, I go to boot into XP today (more files to backup etc) and keyboard is not doing anything. It boots into Windows 7. Now, I wanted it to boot XP as this is secondary and what I do notice is that when I press arrow down (to get to secondary hard drive line) the screen flashes like its registering an input, but, does nothing.
I even disabled smart boot option just to be sure and even borrowed a mates wired keyboard. Windows 7 installed it no trouble and I tried to boot XP with the wired one (my keyboard is wireless but it does work as I can get into BIOS) and even that failed. That then tells me that it is not hardware related and both keyboards work and let me access the boot menu. Why then is the boot menu locked? Don't want to have to keep swapping master and slave channels everytime I boot just to get into XP.
i dont know is i should to post this issues here but i need help w/ booting my system build i connected my optical drive and my hdd and when power up everything look OK until goes to the monitor I see this black screen with that message I trying several things but not success how I get off of that screen so I can go to the BIOS interface and work from there I was able to see the BIOs before I installed this two drivers l don't understand.

I have a asus x53e notebook that was on balanced on two corners to press in the charging cable ( not the problem ). It was knocked over and now when starting up i get the message on a black screen Reboot and select proper device. If i pressf2 when starting up i can get the bios screen but am unsure what happens after that.

Well then I restarted after the installation only to find that it hangs at "Verifying DMI Pool Data". View 9 Replies View RelatedShort version: Swapped HDDs, then got the error message in title on one of the drives. Tried mbrfix and bootsect via repair through Windows 7 CD, but doesn't help. Drive is still functioning.
Long version: I recently swapped some HDDs back and forth (one with Windows XP and another with Windows 7, but I did not try booting with both at the same time) and all of a sudden, I get the error message listed in the topic. The HDD is definitely still functioning, I can see it in BIOS and when booting with the Windows CD, I can use command prompt and browse the directories. I've tried mbrfix and bootsect. With bootsect, it says it is successful when entering the line "bootsect /nt60 all" and automatically finds the C:. However, when selecting repair through the Windows cd, the adrive does not show up and the operating system is listed as unknown local disk.
I've read through most of the threads with this same problem but either mbrfix or bootsect seems to usually fix it. I'd prefer not to have to copy the entire drive or reformat if possible, but I guess I will have to if I can't find any other solutions. Since bootsect was successful, does it mean the problem lies elsewhere and is not the MBR?
