I installed Windows 7 on a separate drive from Windows XP. On booting the computer the two operating systems appear but I cannot used the arrow or tab key etc to select the operating system. It defaults to Windows 7 after 30 seconds.
View 4 RepliesI have windows 7 pro as my default OS on a 1T internal hard drive. Some of my games won't work so I partitioned my hard drive 50 gigs, and have installed windows xp on that partition. Of course I inserted the XP disk, went into the bio's and switched the boot order of my computer to CD (for now). Installed xp, and it work. But when I restarted it, It just goes directly to XP, It doesn't give me a list on which Os to boot off of or anything. I went to start and typed in msconfig. and it only saw XP, although there were other things there i did not recognize.
So I inserted the windows 7 disk and restarted computer off disk and selected "repair" and I am back on 7, but I can go back on XP any time I want, (just simple insert the XP disk). Anyways when I'm in windows 7 and I type in msconfig in the search bar, it only see's windows 7 Os, current and default OS. So I have two OS on a partitioned hard drive, no boot selective boot up. And I cant access one or the other without the boot up disk. Is there a way to select which one i want to boot up?
I have messed up my dual boot of XP Pro and Seven
Seven was working well, but XP was playing up.
I did a restore from an earlier acronis image of XP.
XP now works again, but as you have guessed I have lost the dual boot menu to select Windows 7 when I bootup.
I know boot.ini does not apply with Seven.
Please tell me how to get my neatly tweaked Seven back on the boot menu,

The BIOS boot priority is 1# Dvd Player and 2# Harddrive (so it detects both).It's also a SATA harddrive so I don't need to do anything with jumpers.Then when I insert the Windows 7 DVD it outputs the following error:reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected The PC is new and got build at a store so the only thing I need to do is install the software.

I just changed my PSU and upgraded my graphics card today. I tried booting it up and it came up with this message "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key."I'm pretty sure I got all the cables in correctly and I only have one harddrive. No externals.By the way, I don't have my windows 7 CD because I let a friend borrow it and I won't be able to get it back for some time. However, I do have a Windows XP CD if that helps in any way.

Can I do what I want without screwing up my xp installation?

View 1 Replies View Relateddual booting windows 7 home premium x64 with linux fedora 14 on dual independantly dedicated drives. i am a college student with moderate computer (windows) knowledge but am doing software development and would like to play around with some linux for a class. i have no prior experience with linux and have minimal knowledge of operation. i am currently running windows 7 and would like to keep it as my primary os. i do not wish to share media files across drives or os's, windows does that just fine as is and i dont want to get into a third drive. my current drive is a 1tb wd black caviar hdd. it is also currently 2/3rds full and the desktop is about 6 months old so i would rather not partition the drive for a dual boot. i would think that there are some other advantages for the os's operating independantly off their own drives other than if one hdd dies i should still have the other with its os still ok. i have read some topics about RAID configs with dual boot setups with dual drives like this but am not very familiar with RAID. is there a RAID config that would be beneficial in this situation? i currently do not have a RAID card. my tower internals are not very accessible and i dont like the idea of disconnecting drives depending on which os i want to operate.

I would try using my boot disk but for the life of me I can't find it, and as windows 7 was already installed on this computer when we got it 3 year ago, I can't accurately recall if it came with one!I am no expert on BIOS, but I have read other problems similar to this one, and know that if I don't have the boot disk or the OS disk, I will need to know that at least.I am curious if the (Hard drive) is the issue. The BIOS tells me that anything in parentheses is disabled from corresponding type menu.

I unplugged every device one at a time (including all external peripheral devices) and tried to reboot unsuccessfully. I checked to make sure everything was properly attached multiple times. Sometimes I'm able to boot with the windows 7 disk....most times not so lucky. I checked my bios boot order and everything seems to be correct after reading posts online. I wonder if the CMOS battery can cause this or if their is some type of diagnosis tool or hardware malfunction causing this. I ran seagate tools to check hard drives..They are all working fine.

However, when I leave it on overnight (usually when it is downloading something big), when I wake up in the morning I am greeted with a black screen with the words:"Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"When this happens I simply press the power button a few seconds to turn it off, then turn it on again and it boots normally. (pressing a key only results in the message being repeated)What infuriates me is that it only ever happens when I leave it on overnight so I don't know when and how exactly it occurs but it almost always does. Like I said earler, it never does this when I am using it as it works fine otherwise. It just won't stay on overnight when I need it to.

I can't install my Windows Ultimate 64 bit edition on my RAID 0 Western Digital 500GB hdd's because on the boot screen my computer keeps telling me to "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device", I've done both those instructions, rebooted, reinserted, all of it, no solution. I made sure my boot priority is the drive first, and raid drives after. Still nothing. But this is the interesting part, last time I fixed this problem by using my previous computers dvd drive to install instead of the blu ray, it installed and everything was right with the world.
But I have since then thrown out the old DVD drive, and now have nothing to install with. So what I did in the past hour was used a freinds DVD drive to install and it did not work. When my System Config, is set to RAID, it calls both my blu ray and his dvd drive, ATAPI CD, when in IDE, it calls my blue ray a blue ray and his dvd drive a dvd drive. I simply want to do a clean(custom) install of my windows 64 bit on my two RAID 0 HDDs, I've checked the boot priority, I've put both hdds in RAID0 and I've also used someone elses dvd dive to try and install.
As currently configured, XP is on drive C:, Win 7 was added to drive E:, and the system is currently run as a dual boot. Attempting to boot without the XP drive present will yield a "NTLDR is missing" error very early in the boot process.
I have already tried the following:
(1) I moved the hidden Windows Boot Manager files (bootmgr as well as the associated Boot folder) from the XP drive root to the Win 7 drive root.
(2) After physically removing the XP drive, I rebooted to the Win 7 installation DVD, and used the "Repair Your Computer" option to pull up the "Recovery Tools". Then, using the command prompt utility, ...
(3) I attempted to write a new boot sector to the Windows 7 disk using the command: Bootrec /fixboot, - that yields an error though. The Bootrec /fixmbr claimed success, but ultimately did not make Win 7 drive bootable.
I had to reconnect drive C: just to boot into Win 7 again to write this. I do have files backed up, but to format and reinstall files would take many hours beyond just the time to transfer 400 GB of data, since I have dozens of purchased applications that need to be freshly reinstalled and validated as well. Basically I want my E: drive now to be my boot drive while the C: drive is reformatted and used for general storage.
Any idea how to make my Win 7 drive bootable? Do I need a partition program that is more adept at creating a viable boot sector, or is that even the problem?
I have a laptop that I have set-up with 3 OS's; windows 7 (to use), windows 8 (to learn), and Linux (to do everything else). The other day I noticed a few issues and decided I needed to remove windows 8 and Ubuntu in order to prevent a system crash (kinda ironic once you read the whole thing). When I installed Ubuntu and windows 8, I created a 45gb partition for them. Not a big deal. The problem is when I removed ubuntu/windows 8 and their partition, I forgot to set something with the windows 7 partition so it was the main boot partition. Now its trying to boot from a partition on the hard disk that doesn't exist. I know for a fact that the windows partition is completely functional and intact. It's a rookie mistake and I make no excuses. At this point I'm 90% sure I need to reinstall windows 7, which I can easily do as I have restore disks and multiple back-ups. I was just curious if there is a way to change this either through BIOS or using a USB/SATA cable to externally boot and access Windows 7 system files.
