I recently got a BSOD I looked up the error code and its linked to windows security essentials. I tried logging into my computer regularly but it will load the icons and blue screen. But I can run find in safe mode but it won't uninstall the program in safemode.

The laptop was having already microsoft security essentials (MSE) and mcafee antivirus plus software. Unfortunately, yesterday i was facing blue screen on death type of error (BSOD) error. On one forum, I found that it may be due to the mcafee antivirus software. So, I uninstalled the software as per suggestion.Why MSE was not able to detect this bsod error? Moreover, why mcafee, which itself is a anti-virus software, was causing this issue?
Morever, I want to install good free antivirus software. I am totally confused whether should I install the antivirus software or, the internet security software. Please throw more light on good free internet security software from longer perspective. (I just found that almost all free trials are only for 1 month only)? Moreover, why built-in windows firewall and microsoft security essentials (MSE) are not enough for detecting malacious software. Why extra internet security software or antivirus software is required ?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using Windows 7 x64 SP1 Pro on a HP Compaq notebook. Since I installed Windows and all those HP apps (some of them apparently required to access BIOS) I got this shortcut on desktop and I cannot remove it. Deleting it manually does not work and the shortcut does not appear in User/Desktop or Public/Desktop folders. Right clicking it does not show the usual menu but this so I cannot get the location of the file. Also, the Remove Icon option does nothing not even in Safe Mode. How to get rid of this? Some suggested to reinstall the app however this also does not work.

None had a satisfactory answer (besides the usual reinstall).Windows now fails to boot, after Win update automatically installed the update and insisting I restart. The update was Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.97.1113.0). Startup repair finds no problems. The BIOS recognizes the system drive and reports no errors.
I had done (before the update installed itself): repaired the "windows can't find the DVD drive" problem using the Microsoft "Fixit" for that problem it was successful). Also the external storage drive on a USB 3.0 controlled was dropped by the system at some point (hence my anxiety; all my backups, including a rather stale system drive image, are on that drive). I can access the Win 7 system drive with another OS on the machine (XP SP3).

I purchased a Windows 7 laptop that was already running Microsoft Security Essentials. Since I had a Norton 360 Premier subscription, I tried to download and install it.It won't work without uninstalling MSE, which I did. But it still doesn't work. MSE won't reinstall because it can find bits of the Norton install. I've run the Norton utilities for removal, I've spent 4 hours on the phone with Norton, and I've been going back and forth via email with the MS support guys to do a full removal of MSE and after going through registry edits, and turning off all microsoft products and hours of troubleshooting this - I *still* can't get it to work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedFor the last 2 days I have been trying to do a full virus scan with Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) and it gets hung up every time on WindowsSystem32CodeIntegritydriver.stl It will do a quick scan just fine but that is it. When it gets hung up on this file I try to cancel the scan and end up having to use the task manager to close out the program and then I have to reboot my computer to have MSE working in the taskbar. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, removing programs that were recently installed, I ran malwarebytes and that came up clean, I tried restoring to an earlier time and that didn't work, I tried safe mode and it did not work. I do not have a wireless mouse or wireless keyboard. Some sites suggested that might be a problem. I installed and tried Super Antispyware and that did not work properly so I uninstalled it. I do not know what else to do. I sure would feel better if I knew my antivirus program would do a full and complete scan. It is always the same file that it gets stuck at. I even tried putting that particular file in the excluded files within the MSE program and that didn't work either. It just kept trying to scan it. I have Windows 7 Home Premium with 64 bit operating system. With having our Church records, our business files and then of course my personal files/pics it always makes me nervous when something isn't working properly.

Whenever, I try to install the update, everything goes fine, and then suddenly goes blank and the desktop returns (but the Windows update screen had closed). When I open Windows update, it shows that the aforesaid update is not installed. And when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it and asks to delete it. I can't even open Microsoft Security Essentials manually from Program files. Things return to normal on System Restore. But the Microsoft Security Essentials appears potentially unprotected and asks for a full system scan. But before the scan is complete the Microsoft Security Essentials screen closes and the desktop returns once again. And, once again, when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have started my weekly scan with Microsoft Security Essentials when I have noticed some things:
- MSE stalled on a specific file which posed no problem in the past and the timer refused to increase even after 10 or so minutes.
- MSE has locked up my computer or slowed it down to the point where I have to do a hard restart. This never happened before
- Other programs have taken a major performance hit like Google Chrome for example. Even Windows 7's explorer has locked up time to time.
- System restore is not working since it stalled on the initializing phase for at least 30 minutes without significant progress, prompting a hard restart.
- It took a lot longer for the system to shutdown normally.
I have issues on the computer that I have not have before and I'm not sure why. Is there a solution that does not involve a clean re-install? I do not have the DVDs since the laptop has Windows 7 built in and they did not give me a CD.

The reason I use this setting is because even though I usually install the updates (because mostly they improve things), sometimes I'll see an update that I know I do not want to install. So I want to have control over which updates get installed.However, I ALWAYS want to install the latest "Definition Update For Microsoft Security Essentials", and since those updates are released very frequently, it's very annoying to always have to install them manually. I am currently in Safe Mode with Networking without issue.The owner of the computer says that something happened earlier today while he was online that sounds like some false antivirus popup, but he's unsure. Here are the symptoms in normal mode. Every application, from moving through them to opening and closing them, runs exceptionally slow - one to three minutes to open, at least a minute to open internet pages. I noticed that, when in IE, as the pages are loading the IE page disappears and reappears. I am not very familiar with Windows 7 so I don't know if it is related. The computer seems to be getting slower as the day goes on. CPU usage is very high.So far, I have disabled many startup items that were unnecessary. I ran CCleaner and cleaned up. MBAM was run in both normal and safe mode, full scans, and found nothing. This is also posted in Viruses and Malware, but I'm unsure where it should live.
