I was trying to limit access to my hard drive (D on the guest account, so i logged in as admin and went to security on properties and denied full control and users. But now even my admin account can't access the data drive. it says access denied. and the security tab is not there any more when i click properties. How can i fix this problem?

So I've been using my 64GB ssd as my windows 7 boot drive and i have a 1TB hdd as my data drive. Recently the my computer has begun to freeze up with errors like "explorer.exe" has stopped responding or "windows" has stopped responding and half of the time when i try to boot it says it cant find windows. This has lead me to believe that my ssd is dying despite being only a year old. I need to RMA my ssd but to do that i would be losing my boot drive for weeks. So I thought id try to create a system image so that i can simply put my boot drive on my hdd, but when i try to create the image it says that the image would be 711GB because its including all of my hdd (which contains all my user libraries and downloads). My question is: how do I make windows stop thinking that my hdd is a system drive so that I can create a reasonably sized image, or more generally: how can i easily move my boot drive to my hdd? Also, I've read some posts about using "easyBCD" to accomplish the latter but I'm not sure that's exactly what i need in this situation.
View 4 Replies View Relatedlocked myself out of the C drive. When i click on the drive i get the message "location is not available , Cis not accessible, access is denied". When i right click on properties, security,continue , i get -"cant open access control editor. access is denied". When i right click properties, sharing, adv. settings i get 'your administrator has blocked you from running this program". I am still able to run programs which have icons on the desk top. I am unable to restore in normal or safe mode. hope someone can help .

I have heard that you can ghost a file on the data drive into the x86 folder so that all new installs go there and then you still recieve most of the benefits of your ssd w/o clogging it up. I have an amd based system (dont know if that matters or not)
View 1 Replies View RelatedIve had this problem once before. I turned my PC on Yesterday, and my WD 500GB Hard drive (Number 3) was not recognised. Then I did a reboot, and the drive showed up again, HOWEVER, The drive has the Read Only flag in DiskPart and using the attrib disk clear readonly commands with the correct disk selected does not work. DiskPart just moans that It cant clear the attribute.
I doubt its a Driver Issue or a Hardware issue as It was working fine. All the tests in Ubuntu 10.04 (my second os) come up good and I can write to it, So Windows 7 has done something, Not sure what.
bought a new computer, shifted the external hard drive over, and it is locked - the take ownership trick doesn't work - who designed this POS system?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just built a new pc and when I run cmd as admin and do a chkdsk/f or /r, every time it says the drive is locked, and it will do the chkdsk on sys restart. I am 99% sure I used the same disc for both installs of win 7 x64. Is there something wrong with my install discs or something? Did the files I moved from the old pc have a virus or something in it? Are the drives locked because I didn't partition them correctly? How do I figure out why my drive is always locked?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 on my primary drive and XP on my secondary drive. I still use XP as I'm in the process of transferring all my program install files etc to an external USB then I will put them on windows 7. I was able to manually select which OS I wanted the system to boot into by simply pressing ESC button during POST and then the boot menu would come up. Press your down arrow on keyboard and then you boot into XP no problem.
It is worth mentioning since that I actually went into BIOS and enabled "smart boot" which brought that menu up automatically so I no longer had to press ESC. So, I go to boot into XP today (more files to backup etc) and keyboard is not doing anything. It boots into Windows 7. Now, I wanted it to boot XP as this is secondary and what I do notice is that when I press arrow down (to get to secondary hard drive line) the screen flashes like its registering an input, but, does nothing.
I even disabled smart boot option just to be sure and even borrowed a mates wired keyboard. Windows 7 installed it no trouble and I tried to boot XP with the wired one (my keyboard is wireless but it does work as I can get into BIOS) and even that failed. That then tells me that it is not hardware related and both keyboards work and let me access the boot menu. Why then is the boot menu locked? Don't want to have to keep swapping master and slave channels everytime I boot just to get into XP.
i have a lg xnote that i got given to me because they didnt know what to do with it. when i turn it on it comes up as "harddisk security" and "primary master" and asks for a password that i dont have. i just want to wipe it or something?

I have changed permission to full control..both under properties and also under hardrive management but the only thing I have not been able to change is special permissions.. i have also tried changing all inherited children too but these have not helped.. also .. The external drive already has this folder in place and the proper files and folders within D/S as I have been routinely backing it up for the last few years. However, now when I try to Copy Folder To the external drive, I get the error message that access to the J drive (external drive) is denied. As you can see from the pic below, the D/S folder on my hard drive is apparently locked. I don't recall locking it and how do I unlock it so that I can copy to to the external drive?

I have two HDD that used to be in a D-LINK DNS323. I have windows 7 on a laptop. I have a HDD to USB converter to connect the drive to the laptop. How can I actually read the data from the HDD. I can't put them back in the DNS 323 because they will be formatted. If I remember right the drives were 1TB with 500 MB designated as RAID1. Most data was on the RAID 1 volume.

So I purchased a USB 2.0 to Sata/ide hard drive adapter in hopes of accessing the drive to copy the users files off of the drive. I see the drive in disk manager and it says that the drive is healthy & encrypted so enter the bitlocker recovery key for the drive, butI get the following error: 'f: is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect.

View 2 Replies View RelatedGot a new PC (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) with a 1TB drive. I added an extra internal drive which happens to be one of my old 300GB XP drives (231GB free). There are some apps on the old drive (Photoshop 6.0) which still run & I'd like to use them. Can I run Windows Backup and create an image on the old drive even though there are 70GB's of apps & files on there already?? Does the backup wizard partition or format the selected drive in the process of backing up? Obviously I'd like to keep accessing that stuff if I can.
