Finding Folder View For CD-ROM?
Jun 21, 2012
I am trying to create a DVD-ROM and I want it to look the same on the desktop for everyone, so I want to be able to lock:
1. Folder view in icon view
2. Icon positions and size
Is there anyway to do this with the desktop.ini file or some other permanent way? The DVD-ROM is being authored on a Mac, so a hidden file like desktop.ini would be the best option here.

My problem is very simple; the little search box in folder view does nothing. Search from windows start menu works good, and WINDOWS+F also works.
The computer in question is a HP 2710p laptop with Win7 x64, and it works brilliantly. I'm assuming it has nothing to do with other software present, but Avast, Office, Matlab, SPSS, Teracopy, Tuneup Utilities, Dropbox, Winrar, and Steam are present.

It appears that if I open a folder in Windows 7 and change the size of the folder on he screen, all other folders in the same parent folder are now shown with that same size on the screen. I would like all folders to have their own size on the screen and retain knowledge of that size. How can I achieve that ?

This may be normal, but not normal to me. I just installed Win 7 a few days ago and am still learning after years on XP.When I open System Restore, I only get one restore option, and it's from last night. When I check the block for show more options there is no change even after I close/re-open Sys Restore.Doesn't the system create a new restore point on boot? Doesn't it keep older restore ponts? Also, I want all my files to open with large icons. In many of the folders I can't find a "view" option anywhere/anyway.

I am running winows 7 ultimate 32bit as a server, i have the c: drive shared to all 13 users on the network. All 13 computers are running windows xp pro. The problem that I am having is this:When i open up the shared c: drive on a windows xp computer, and open a folder to view files, it only shows 122 out of the 227 files.when i open up the c: drive on the windwos 7 machine, i can see all 227 files.when i open up excel or word, and open a file that is stored on the windows 7 machine, it will open fine, but when i try and browse for the file that is stored on the windows 7 machine, it does not show it.now here is the interesting thing:when i open up the shared c: drive on another computer running windows 7, (not the server) i can see all 227 files and have no problems.i have multiple folders, ex: mypics2008, mypics2009, mypics2010, mypics2001, mydocs2000, mydocs2010, all shared off of the c: drive on the windows 7 server. this problem started a few weeks ago, i was able to see all the files in every shared folder off of the windows 7 server through all of the windows xp pr machines a month ago, and all of a sudden in the past few weeks, i am no longer able to see all of the files shared off of the server.i have rebuilt the index on the windows 7 server i have removed and redone ALL security, and sharing settings i have checked, rechecked and checked again all the file sharing settings I am stumped, and i consider myself knowledgable with computers.

I've noticed that when I change a folder view to show large icons, for example, other folders change to that, too; or when I change the view to Details, other folders also change to that. I have to be forever setting and resetting folder views. Is there a way to get Windows 7 to accept a change to the view settings of a folder without propagating that to other folders unless I ask it to?

When I view a folder full of jpgs I select 'large icons' so I can see thumbnails. Then when I move up the tree to the folders they too are in 'large icons'. I change these to 'list' and my jpgs are shown in 'list' style. How can I select a folder to keep the view type I select as I did in XP?

I installed a program the other day that messed with my Windows Explorer. Now no folder will remember it's View options (Large Icons, List, Details), they all reset to their default.
As you can see it's nothing to do with Libraries. Neither the 'Shell Fix' nor editing the registry at
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClassesLocal SettingsSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellBagsAllFoldersShell
has fixed it.

I recently installed an old game. I'm running Win 7 Pro x64 and the game was for XP. I messed with the compatibility settings and I think something went wrong. The folder icons have changed everywhere but on the desktop. The desktop shows the regular aero styled icons. Everywhere else the folder icons are some dumbed-down picture that looks low tech even for XP. Its bright yellow and has no 3D effects. To make it even more frustrating, it only does this when the view is set to details, list, or small icons, which are the only views I ever use. What button did I push and how can I fix this?

For example I have a folder in my desktop with pictures, videos, documents, music, etc. I organized it by grouping by type, somewhere between large & extra large thumbnails, and a few other things. I want these settings applied to all other folders. I went to folder options and applied it to other folders. Nothing changed. My other folders, including my picture folder is still the same way it was. How do I apply to ALL folders? I know you can zoom in on thumbnails by hitting ctrl + mouse scroll wheel, but is there a way you can do it with a keyboard and not the mouse?

I am trying to set a default view for all folders, such that when I change the view in an explorer window, it will only take effect for the current explorer window, and will not be saved. Or even better, let me choose when I want to save a view setting as default for the current folder. I do not want to keep resetting my folder view. In Windows 98/XP it was possible.

I have several DVD's with 60,000 files on them. (these come from a vendor) When I try to open them it takes an hour before I can view the files. I think it is because it tries to index the DVD before it opens. If we open it on an XP computer, it just opens.

I finally got around to recognizing the use of the Libraries feature in Windows 7, and can't believe I didn't realize it earlier. Anyways, my question is, I have 2 folders in a Library with the same name (but point to different locations), basically they contain the same files but one resides in My Dropbox and one resides on my local HD. When I rename a folder in Libraries (to distinguish btwn the 2), it also renames that folder in the actual folder location. I was wondering if I could ONLY rename the folders in the Libraries view, without having it reflect on the actual folder name. Also, I was wondering if any of you have used the Libraries feature as an Application Launcher (ie. creating different Libraries for Programs, Games, etc.), and would like to know how that works/worked out.

When I backup to an external USB drive, Explorer shows the 2 folders created (WindowsImageBackup and MYNAME-PC) as having 0 bytes, 0 files and 0 folders when right clicking those folders and looking at Properties.
Yet, if I right click the drive icon, Properties shows the drive with 15GB of used space.
Is this normal? I'm not using third party software for the backup.

Vista allowed the contents of a window to be sorted by name, date modified, etc in any view -- but it appears Windows 7 drops that menu bar for all views other than "details" view. I can right-click within the box to sort, but it's very inefficient. retain that detail bar in all views?

You know how when you make changes inside a folder or any directory under windows 7 using explorer, updates, new files downloaded, any changes will reflect in that folder listing/view instanteously, without you having to hit the "refesh" button on the address bar to see what changes took place in that folder. My problem is with the new Fantom Drive ext USB HDD I bought. Anything I do inside that drives folder hiearchy of files. Like downloading new files from firefox, or unraring a bunch of archives; all changes will not show until I go manually hit the folder refresh button every time. Why is that not automatic? Like it is with my main internal C Drive, and my other ext usb LaCie HDD.

In former WinXP I could slowly (!) double click on a folder name on the left side of WinExplorer in the tree view. The folder name could then be renamed. In new Windows 7 the slow double click trick does not work any more. Ok, I could select "rename" from the context menu. However I prefer the slow double click way. Is there a way to enable this feature in Windows 7 as well?

I just got my new computer with Win 7 64bit and while looking at the folder settings I couldn't find the nifty feature that used to be called "Remember each folder's settings of view." in Vista. Does it no longer exist? Is there a way to have this function? It would be a bit of a bummer if not. It's not very convienent to have all the windows open on top of each other.
