Changing The Way A Desktop Folder Looks?

Nov 23, 2012

In Xp Pro I was able to turn the navigation pane in the desktop folders without effecting the way windows explorer looks. In Windows 7 home 32bit, any changes made to the desktop folders also effects windows explorer. Is there some kind of a switch that will keep the desktop folders changes from effecting windows explorer?

Changing Name Of User Folder

Apr 16, 2011

I recently set up a new Windows 7 machine and, when asked for the name to be given to the users folder, I let it use the default name USER. I set up an account with my name on it but the folder name is still USER. It's locked and Rename isn't listed in the options menu displayed when I right-click it. How can I change the folder name?

Changing The Folder Template?

Apr 11, 2011

As Windows7 has a feature "Automatic Folder Type Discovery", it will automatically change the folder template of a folder to match the file type of the last file added or saved in the folder. Of course, you can change the folder template to one of General Items, Documents, Pictures, Music and Videos manually. Here is my problem, for example, I have three folders: A, B and C. Folder A is located in D:, B is a subfolder to A, and C is a subfolder to B. (D:ABC)If I change the folder template of A, from General Items to Pictures, for example, the folder templates of both B and C will also be changed to Pictures. AND, if I change the folder template of C to Documents, the folder templates of A and B will be changed to Documents too. There seems to be a bond among the three folders, if I change the folder template of any one, the other two will be changed automatically. At first, I thought the "Automatic Folder Type Discovery" might cause the problem, but after I've disabled "Automatic Folder Type Discovery", the problem is still a problem.

Folder View Options Keep Changing?

Nov 29, 2011

I've noticed that when I change a folder view to show large icons, for example, other folders change to that, too; or when I change the view to Details, other folders also change to that. I have to be forever setting and resetting folder views. Is there a way to get Windows 7 to accept a change to the view settings of a folder without propagating that to other folders unless I ask it to?

Changing Folder Preview Icon?

Apr 8, 2012

I used IconPackager to change icon on my computer. It works great but I have a problem with folder thumbnails. When normal folders icons are simple and black the folder preview use the orange Windows 7 default icon. It looks silly.I know that I can disable the folder thumbnails. I can do it but then also images thumbnails are disabled and I don't want that. I need the images thumbnails. So my questions are:1) How to disable folder thumbnail without disabling images thumbnails?...or...2) How to change the folder thumbnail icon used to generate previews?

Changing X64 Default Installation Folder(s)?

Feb 5, 2012

I just upgraded from 32 bit to 64 bit windows 7, I have two harddrives, a 40 gig for my os (C and a 1 tb for everything else (D. That's how it was on the 32 bit system, but now on 64 bit, there are more folders to mess with (Program Files and Program Files x86). How do I tell windows to install to the bigger D: drive and not fill up my small C: drive? Also, the programs that were already installed on my D: drive, will they need to be moved to the x86 folder, reinstalled, or can I continue to run them from their current location?

Windows Folder Icon Changing On Rename

Jun 29, 2012

I am having very bizarre behavior with the folder icon changing when I rename a folder. On my C: drive, I have a folder named mydata. I created it using Google Drive, and renamed it to mydata. The folder at first showed the Google Drive triangle icon, and now shows the recycling arrows on folder icon, showing it needs updating. So far, so good.

I now created a separate folder on my C: drive named "mydata backup". Upon creation of the folder, it gets the google drive icon (recycling arrows). If I create a folder with any other name, it gets the standard folder icon. If I rename a folder to "mydata anything", it immediately takes on the google drive icon! If I rename it to "xmydata anything", it goes back to the normal folder icon!

I doubt that Google Drive is changing the icon, since in theory it doesn't know about a new folder or a folder rename outside of the folder it controls, so I assume the icon change comes from Windows 7 itself. Has anyone seen anything like this? If not, I will go to the Google Drive people and see if they have an answer.

Changing The Owner Of A Folder Back To System

I get an access denied error when I try to open my CDocuments and Settings. Although I am the owner of the computer I was denied permissions to open the folder. So, I changed the owner of Documents and Settings from SYSTEM to Fasih(HP-PCHP) and this is me. Still I cant access. Also, I wanna revert the owner back to SYSTEM, just in case to prevent anything stupid. So I retraced the steps and now.. I cant change the owner back to SYSTEM (strange).

Changing The Temporary Folder When Burning In Mastered Format?

Sep 11, 2010

I went to the "recording" tab in my DVD burner's properties, changed the drive from C to D. Now there's a folder called "Windows Burn Temp Files" in my D drive. But the problem is, while burning, files are still being copied over to C in a temporary folder there. Shouldn't it be copying to D:Windows Burn Temp Files instead? Example, when I cut paste some files from D drive on to the DVD drive before burning, it should be instantaneous, as the temporary files should also be shored in the same drive, D. But this is not happening.

Changing Default Installation Folder To Separate Drive?

Sep 4, 2011

If you have a small but fast (or maybe not so fast) drive that you would like to ONLY run Windows off of and a larger separate HDD that you want to use as the install drive for all programs. In my case I have a 50GB SSD and a RAID0 array of 2TB. With space being limited on the SSD the best option for me is to install everything to the RAID array and leave the OS on the SSD. Mind you, you don't have to be running a RAID array to do this. That's just how my system is set up. You'll probably be better off just using a larger single HDD for stability reasons. And if you are doing a fresh install you should give this tutorial a look: User Profiles - Create and Move During Windows 7 Installation So the first step is to open REGEDIT. Simply click the Start Menu, type REGEDIT in the search bar and hit ENTER.Next look for the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" Once opened go to "SOFTWARE". There are two folder in this directory we will be editing. Note that the second folder "WOW64" is only for 64-bit users. If you are running 32-bit then the "WINDOWS" folder is all you will need to make changes to.Now from the "WINDOWS" folder you want to select "CURRENTVERSION". Simply click the folder itself not the arrow next to it. This is what you should see in the main window to the right of the directories. Now my registry settings have already been changed. Note that my secondary drive is "D:". Originaly everything here was set to "C:".

Once this is finished the 32-bit users are finished and can restart their systems. 64-bit users have one more step. Now you want to go to your "WOW64" folder. While I just realized I forgot to cut a snippet for this step it's fairly simple. Once in the "WOW64" folder you once again want to click the "CURRENTUSER" folder and observe the main window to the right.Just like in the "WINDOWS" registry you will make the same changes. Once you have implemented your drive your registry should look like this. Now restart your system. Though there is a chance you are completely finished I highly suggest running a command prompt session and typing "sfc /scannow". This will allow your system to scan for any conflicts in the internal settings and fix them.

GP For Permanently Changing Shared Folder Offline Permissions?

Jul 11, 2012

've got a problem getting offline folder permissions to stick after restarts in our domain. Here's what I do:Go to MC>shared folders>shares>C$ (as an example)>properties>offline settings> and then I change "only files and folders users specify..." to "All files...". Apply and done.It works like a champ for what I'm trying to do (enable Restore Previous Versions of files to actually work- I learned that RPV fix from another thread here at seven), but after each restart the settings are restored to default. I'm assuming there's a group policy I can implement that'll auto-set those permissions permanently but I can't find any 'offline' shared folder permissions options anywhere

Screensaver Won't Load After Changing Theme Of Desktop

Jan 20, 2012

I'm having a problem with my screensaver and I don't know why I can't get it to load. I had it working just fine until I accidentally changed the theme of the desktop. I changed it and it went to some high contrast theme but I changed it back soon after. I noticed when I went back to my original theme, the screensaver was set to none. I left it alone and it never went to screensaver like it was suppose to.

I tried changing the settings to see if that would work but it refuses to move from none. The window will let me set the screensaver but the overall theme still says none on theme. No matter which theme I set it to now. The registry still has screensaver enabled, all permissions are properly set and double checked, there are no wireless mouses or keyboards that are hooked up to my computer. Its windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Changing Themes Via The Ones Pre Installed And It Might Change My Desktop Wallpaper?

Jan 13, 2013

So in the last month i noticed some of my folders i keep on the desktop change form the newer slicker icon of a folder back to the typical windows yellow folder. Then more and more until all of my folders where like that. Then all of sudden some sounds started to go from a normal contemporary notification sound to a dull sound from XP or older. Then about a week ago the "bar" if you will changed from a typical Win7 style back to a XP one where its dull. And its like that everywhere.

I have tried icon programs at first to fix the folder issue and unless i wanna do it one buy one its sucks and i just want them back to a normal win7 folder nothing fancy.I have tried changing themes via the ones pre installed and it might change my desktop wallpaper it never changes the "bars"Also tried other non microsoft theme programs with the same results.

ALSO i scanned my pc with Malwarebyes, CCleaner, WinASO, AVG and cleaned all up and so on rebooted all the same.Thought i may have installed too many apps or at least big apps (photo/video editing) and i uninstalled a few with no difference. So then i decided to check out my ram. So i make a bootable disc of a memory scanner. Ended up getting into the millions of errors with the ram i had and i stopped it before it was done with the intentions on getting ram and not waiting until scan was done to tell me i had 500 trillion errors lol.
Bought new ram installed it started her up and BAM .... same thing.I have not scanned this ram as my wife uses it while im at work and when im home i do alota 2nd job stuff on it so i dont like having it offline long.

Changing Path Of Default "User" Folder To Another Drive?

Apr 11, 2011

I am currently running Windows 7 64-bit off of an 80 GB SSD while storing the majority of my programs (and documents, videos, etc.) on my 1 TB other drive. I am quickly running out of space on the SSD and I think it has to do with the fact that it keeps my saved game files there in the User directory while some saves stay on the F (1 TB) drive. Is there a way to transfer/redirect the profile so that it defaults to saving in a User folder on my F drive?
