Windows Security Suddenly Needs Network Password?
Jul 1, 2011
My Windows 7 PC is asked for a Network Password (Windows Security Dialogue Box) on a home network when trying to access files on my XP machine on a two-PC home network. This was never been asked before. Windows 7 did a Windows Update last night and rebooted my computer. UserNames and passwords did not work. I did disable this feature from other recommendations... Local Policies > Security Options > Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only. My XP machine can access files on my Windows 7 machine and does not ask for a password.

his morning when I booted my computer, I was asked to change my password because it will expire in 14 days. My husband and I are the only users on this computer and we have never, in the past, setup a password and have never had to type in a password to logon. If I ignore the message I can continue to logon to Windows. Why am I suddenly getting this message? How do I disable this, before the 14 days are up?

I attempt to connect to my wireless broadband connection but when i click 'connect' a windows security pop up arrives stating that I need to provide a username and password for 'Network authentication'. I dont have these nor do I believe that I have ever included these perviously. This action has only recently appeared and I cannot 'bypass' it. I have other computers linked to the same wifi connection and these are operating just fine (the problem computer runs Windows 7 and is the only one with Win 7). So at least I know that it is not the internet connection itself.Maybe not of any importance but this problem only occurred after the unit ran out of battery power and has not been able to access my broadband service since the subsequent recharge.I have visited Win 7 Network centre on the computer to attempt to establish the problem (it recognises I have one) and been through all the troubleshooting options but no resolution.

I have 2 laptops - the hard drive for one of them is now suddenly asking me for a password.I never set any password on it
1. I set the BIOS password on one laptop (which has a dual boot)
2. I made a backup image of the Windows OS on an external drive using that dual-booted machine
3. I then installed that backed-up image on the other harddrive using the same machine - and that caused the password....

I'm trying to diagnose this problem from 3000 miles away over the phone. I am *very* versed in WinXP, but not at all in Windows 7. As such, I am not looking for a perfect solution at this time, but merely some hints to maybe point me in the right direction, or what the next logical steps in diagnosing this might be.Brand new Acer D55 with Windows 7 home, bought and configured around Christmas 2010. It was working fine until the middle of April, when suddenly (during usage, i.e., not overnight or after a reset), the Acer dropped off the wireless network while other computers remained on the same wireless network, and continue to remain even now. This is the only Windows 7 computer on that network. All others are XP. Here is where I came in.
I have been troubleshooting remote wireless woes for almost 10 years, and am quite good at it. My first instinct is to have someone plug the computer into the router directly with an Ethernet cable, thus temporarily getting the computer back online long enough for me to VNC in and find out why the computer's wireless connection died. This has ALWAYS worked. I have never seen a computer, that when plugged physically into a functioning router, didn't come online. So as you can probably guess, the computer didn't come online. The computer has McAfee security installed, and I have seen AV/firewall suites cause problems in computer usage before, but I have never seen one prevent a computer from jumping online.
The biggest concern at this point for me is why the Local Area Connection is failing. But regarding both Local and Wireless connections, here is what I have tried: Physically plugging the computer into the router.- System restoring to 4/16/11, and then again to 3/24/11- Deleting the stored Wireless connection on record, and adding it back- ipconfig /release, /renew, various netsh commandsNot knowing anything about Windows 7, and knowing that I am troubleshooting this remotely

I recently read the Wired article(s) all about the death of the password, and became inspired to attempt to improve my personal security measures. I recognize that simply making a better password is like putting a band-aid over a leak in a dam, but I feel like band-aids are all I have, so I'd better make due. I have looked into online encryption/hashing software, but am wondering if there are any I can trust (and if I should even bother pursuing) or if I should attempt to make one on my own.

My laptop, a Gateway MT6705, started running painfully slow as it was my test computer for software before I installed anything on my gaming rig and messed her up.So, to remedy this, I decided that a clean install would do wonders. So far, it works. However, I had quite a few networks and network security keys saved, and now I don't have any. I'd really hate to go through the trouble of going to each respective place to get the keys again (since most are about an hour away), so I was wondering if there was any way to recover them.I'm using WirelessKeyView, but it isn't recovering anything except my home network.

I have had my HP Pavilion dm4 for a year and a half now, and when my school gave me a copy of Windows 7 Enterprise (it came with Windows 7 Home) I installed it and all the necessary drivers, and everything's been running smoothly - til now.Tonight all of a sudden my Internet connection showed that it was connected but had "limited connectivity" - aka no Internet. So I restarted my router - no luck. Then I restarted my computer, and my F12 wireless button showed orange - meaning that wireless capability was turned off entirely. It wouldn't turn back on even if I pushed the button, so I went into Control Panel and did some diagnostic thing and it forced the wireless capability back on and it worked again. For about an hour. Then the button went orange again and the diagnostic couldn't turn it back on.So, I went into wireless connections and disabled and reenabled the actual connection rather than the adapter, and it worked again - for about another hour.I don't think it should be a driver problem seeing as I can make it turn back on for certain periods of time and it's worked fine until now. Does anyone know what to do?

I've always thought of networking as one of the black arts.
4 PCs - One Vista, 2 Windows 7 Home Premium, 1 Windows 7 Ultimate. All see each other. All have appropriate folders shared.
Try accessing A from B and I get "Enter Network Password (to connect to B)". I never set one up to start with, so why is it asking me for it. How do I access/change something I never set?
Try accessing B from A - I see the PC, and the folders I want but trying to access them results in "You do not have permissionto access folder names Contact your network administrator - who he? Obviously me but I don't know what the answer is!
Trying similar things with the other two PCs in the mix results in various permutations of the same problem.
I have tried all the various links suggested through Networking and Help, but most of the actions seem to be boxes to click to make the PCs try to sort themselves out. When it fails I can't find a manual way of trying to sort it out.
Any suitable tutorials that may help? Couldn't see any.

A few days ago my computer (an ASUS Eee Netbook) suddenly stopped being able to connect to the wireless network in my apartment, seemingly for no reason whatsoever. It had been working fine earlier in the day, I went out for about an hour (didn't even shut the computer down), returned home and was unable to connect to the network. The computer can locate the network and continues to attempt connecting to it with no luck. I can connect to other networks without any trouble. It has never done this before. I've rebooted the computer several times and performed a System Restore, but without any success. I'm hesitant to reset the router as this is a shared connection with the other people in my apartment (who as far as I know aren't having any trouble with the connection).
