Feb 12, 2013i was downloading a film and accicdently sent a file to open using WMP, now all my programs have gone wrong. int explorer,google chrome, AVG, chess titans etc everything is now trying to open in WMP. I've checked properties and all the target types have changed to WMP, have not got a clue what ive done. ive tried using REGEDIT but this also tries to open in WMP. ive downoaded reg fix for windows 7 but this hasnt worked either. ive done a bit of research on the web for similar problems but none of the solutions seem to be working for me. i am able open int explorer by going to 'open with' which i was not able to do before, but this just changes all the icons to int explorer.
i dont want to have to reboot because ive never done it before and i dont have a back up for the operating systems.
Windows 7 Media Player Crashes Upon Opening?
Dec 2, 2011Ok, I'm trying to watch my CBT Nugget videos for CCNA as I have been this week. I watch them on my desktop, which has a locally attached external HD with the videos sitting on there. I come to my laptop and access the external on my desktop via network share. This has been working pretty much all week long, until today.Now, when I try even playing 1 file, without trying to add them all to a playlist, it opens and it starts playing, but it crashes as shown above.

Dec 22, 2010How can I make Windows Media Player stop updating media every freaking time I start it up? It always hogs up massive amount of CPU power and goes into (Not Responding) for a min while updating.I only add media files to the Windows Explorer Library so I can get indexed searches. I don't even use WMP to view files or anything. Just to burn some music CDs sometimes.I've tried deleting the files from the WMP library but the next time I open it up, it scans and updates all my files again! Is there a way to completely purge the WMP library and make it not update ever? I've unchecked every option that seems to make it scan and update but it still does it.Basically I want to UNLINK the Windows Explorer Library from the WMP Library.

The Random Freezing occurs since July/August 2011, it occurs when I used Skype/Gaming/Browing videos streaming, since thats the major things I do.I had formatted my laptop and installed a new copy but Doesnt help. The probelm had already occurred 2 months.So I bought down to ASUS since it was under warranty.
Ram: Tested ok
HDD : Tested ok
Firstly, the system was running fine, so they did a format but when I bought it home, the freeze occured, Then they changed the hard disk even though it was tested ok, but the freeze occurred.Followed by the whole motherboard was changed, and yet the freeze occur So I was told not to install and drivers, using the generic drivers that were already installed in my system + the latest ATI driver, it was working fine, for 2 days, However I noticed after the windows update where SP1 was installed, my system starts to freeze again.

Feb 7, 2012Windows Media Centre keeps opening up all the time, every few minutes or so. But it's always if I'm doing something. Just closed a program? Windows Media Centre opens. Just saved something? Windows Media Centre opens. Minimizing Firefox to get ready to open something else? You guessed it.But if the computer is idle it won't happen. There is also nothing else apparently wrong with the computer.I never use Windows Media Centre so I wouldn't even mind getting rid of it but I don't know if Windows Media Player relies on it which I do use for certain video formats from time to time. So unless someone says otherwise, I'd rather just disable it as opposed to removing it.

And I have Foobar (portable) as the default program for .mp3.Usually the icons on .mp4, .avi, .mp3 files get updated with the icons of the assigned media players.But on this PC it's not working. They're still the same icons as if WMP was the default player.Does it have to do with the Standard user account? (Because on other PCs I run from an Admin account and I don't have such problems.)

Jul 25, 2011I'm in grave problem here. I just installed windows 7 x64 a few days back. And initially I installed the 32bit version of k-lite codec pack for my windows media player. The media center worked fine then. It was loading my ffdshow and ac3filter along as I checked it.But then yesterday I noticed that the same pop-up od recommended/express install of WMP came again. Initially I thought that it must be some bug or something, but then when my MKV and AVI files didn't work in WMC, I realized that somehow WMP x64 got triggered, and now it is using the x64 bit of WMP in WMC. And I just wanna revert back to 32-bit WMP in WMC.

I copied a DVD from a friends LG Portable Super Multi drive (her computer is XP - in case this might be important?)to my external HD. Something from my Norton popped up earlier regarding GEAR software, but I did not understand it and so dismissed it, at the advice of a friend...I am not so computer savvy. Since then I cannot even access my Windows Media Player.

Apr 30, 2012I just installed a clean install on my 64bit machine with Windows7 Pro. Media Player is nowhere to be found. Searching the drive discovered hundreds of files that are not executable and have the registry naming system in them, also found several .dlls but no executable. Microsoft's site simply says that it is installed with the OS and there is nothing about how to add it. I did look through all the add windows features and did not find it. I also tried to find the .cab file on the install DVD to see if I could manually install it, but I could not find that as the file structure of install discs has changed since I knew how to do this before.
