My computer suddenly tells me it can't open my pictures on one of my user accounts by asking what file do I want to use to open it or to go online to search for an opening file. I tried to start a new user account, and I'm told I need to tell what file I want to use to complete and open this account.

I imported my photos from my SDCard to my PC using Picasa 3, and everything was going smoothly... until I tried to take a look at the photos! all of the photos that I've imported using this method for some reason all became greyed out! Viewing them on Picasa3, all you can see is a grey rectangle, in place of the photos. However, when using the windows explorer folder, i can see that the photos were imported correctly (it's not just a grey box, but the actual photos), but when I try to open it (using any program: Paint, Picasa3, etc), it is still a grey rectangle instead of the photos. I tried to upload the image and send it via email, and I get the same result. In my mistake, I chose to "delete the uploaded photos after uploading" option..it's my vacation photos from Croatia I'm not sure if there were any errors when I imported it... i stepped out for a bit while I was waiting for it to import. I looked around my SD card, and looked at the "Lost.dir" folder, and copied all of what's in there.I did use Glarysoft to recover the images, and I'm using a Windows 7 laptop as my computer. Also, are there other alternatives? I did save the lost.dir with all of the photo files in it, both in my SD Card, and on my laptop.

I have tried it with Firefox and IE, both do the same so its not that, and I have done it on numerous sites, so its not the site?

Since then whenever I want to upload a file that is larger than 300kb to our EDMS server (web based), I always got timeout. I installed windows virtual pc with windows 7 x32 (I didn't installed any software on it except firefox 4) and tried to upload the same file, I still got time out. I was using Internet explorer 8, firefox 3.1, and firefox 4. They all gave me the same result.

I've always wondered if running a manual automatic update (XP, Vista, 7) while you have auto updates turned on would slow things down? Often times I'm updating manually and then the icon pops up saying it is downloading or there are updates ready. Does Windows Update detect if there's already an update going or will it re-download the entire update?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter I reinstalled it, and went on to update the W7 SP1 a strange noise came out of my machine just as it began installing it, and then it seemed like my hard drive crashed, so the PC became unresponsive and I had to shut it down by holding in the button (it tried to recover files when I started it up again, hence my hard drive problem theory).I've since reformatted my machine five times and the exact same thing happens, everything, including hard drive works perfectly until I get to installing Service Pack 1.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI swapped out the MB, CPU and memory in my rig. I did not reinstall windows 7. I was pretty impressed that this worked as well as it did but I have one nagging problem... The network upload speed has suffered a lot. It's not just throughput but the initial "connecting" handshake seems to take a while. For instance, if I go to one of the speed test sites the download is fine. It starts up immediately and is steady at around 20mbs. When this is complete it takes between 10 and 20 seconds for the upload test to start (just says connecting)... and only uploads at .5 to 1mbs. Historically this has been immediate and much faster? After much searching I found that disabling windows management instrumentation in msconfig restored my upload network connectivity. In a speed test the download didn't change, but after that was complete the upload started immediately and was around 5mbs.I disabled/re-enabled this several times to make sure that I got the same results. Is there any way to "fix" WMI without wiping/reinstalling? That's my last resort.
Other info
MB upgrade was from a ASUS p5qse2 to ASUS p8z77-vlk
CPU went from Q9550 to I7 3770K
Troubleshooting went in this order:
bounced router/modem
bypassed router
reinstalled network adapter
disabled/reenabled windows firewall
disabled wmi

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy Windows 7 desktop will not enter automatic or manual sleep. In both cases the computer does an "unsuccessful shutdown". I have to cycle power to reboot the computer. Restart and Shutdown work normally. I have enabled automatic sleep with both Power Options, powercfg, and BIOS.
Powercfg -energy reports no unusual errors rather than the usual USB devices not entering suspend state. I believe I have performed most of the steps outlined in the tutorial by Brink in the Vista forum "How to Troubleshoot a Vista or Windows 7 Sleep Mode Problem".
Just found out Win 7 SP1 was not auto-installed in a netbook and a home PC today, even though both machines were set up to auto-update. The SP1 was sitting in the Windows update notification. Is this normal? Also after manually installing SP1 (i.e. click OK in Windows update), some old updates started to pop up and asked to be installed. I suppose they were for the SP1. Is this normal?

View 7 Replies View RelatedThe speed test on my 2 Windows7 machines (PC and netbook) have recently started to show a fine download speed but when measuring upload speed the dial moves up to 400 and then gradually sinks back to zero over the next couple of minutes. It doesn't register any final upload speed. I can upload files to emails up to roughly 200kb but nothing any larger. However my old laptop with XP has none of these problems. Hard wiring makes no difference and it's not the router, because the XP machine works fine with the same router that uses the Windows7 PC.I've uninstalled Adobe Flash and re-installed it for the Windows7 machine. No change.
