I newly reformatted my laptop and reinstalled with a new licensed Windows 7, replacing Windows XP. When I close the lid, OR, put the laptop into sleep mode, it does go into sleep mode, but - pushing keys or moving the mouse will not bring it out. I have to hold the power button in for 10 seconds to shut the laptop down (hard power down). So basically, I can never put the laptop into sleep mode.

I recently formatted my computer (yesterday, to be precise) but I have some kind of a problem I had before. My system starts the hibernation process after 30 minutes of inactivity and sometimes, like, if it's 4 or 5 hours (during night) without being activated, it simply doesn't wake up. It means my monitor display is black and cannot load. I have to reset it.I'm using Windows 7 64 bits and my system specs are displayed on my profile.

Hibernate file is enabled, PC appears to go to sleep and then hibernate correctly at timeouts, but shuts down instead.
When restarted it does not Resume Windows but starts up to the "Windows didn't shut down correctly" screen which offers "Start Windows Normallly" or one of the Safe Modes. Same thing happens when Hibernate is triggered from Start Menu, or by Shutting the Lid.
I've always wondered if background tasks continue to run while the PC is in sleep mode or hibernation. Are there actions that I can take to wake it up? What happens if I'm running a scan and the PC goes into hibernation or sleep mode?
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently (for the last few months), I've been having a problem where if I sleep/hibernate my laptop (Dell XPS 15), whether that be by shutting the lid or manually, upon waking I receive a BSOD after 5-20 minutes. The message presented is a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FALIURE. Interestingly, until the crash my USB ports also stop working completely.I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium x64, which is NOT the original install, but a new one made from a retail CD. I installed this straight after getting the laptop (July 2010), and had no problems until mid-March.

1-Erunt requires that you turn UAC off for ERUNT and not to use it automatically. ERUNT has not been updated since 2005.
2-System restore and Norton = must Norton turn tamper protection off to restore.
3-system restore = do not use safe mode(good back up) but you cannot restore afterwards.
I have 2 questions, assuming the above is true;
1= does registry backup cause more trouble than imaging.
2-Acronis and Macrium are good but is Win 7 back up restore as reliable with 64 bit? It is limited but I am concerned about the reliability as oppsed to the other two.
I had an older computer that had XP on it so I installed windows 7 and it ran OK, but slower than when it had XP. To go back to XP do I just do as you normally would and use my XP disk and format it and install and when it calls for the previous operating disk stick my windows ME disk in.

Once it does, it will go back to where it was. I was running Windows Update and it did it then. It is so weird to see it part way through an update download and have it go back to the sign in.I've tried the following:
1.I reset all setting to Never so that the computer should never go to sleep.

I recently put together a new computer and used my old hard drive in it. Ever since then I get random crashes, blue screens, windows errors, and hard drive failures. I want to know if I wiped the HD and reinstalled Windows 7, then put all my programs, folders, and settings back on via restore from my external hard drive will it fix those problems,or will the restore make them come back.

- When asked to reboot > reboot
- Go to start > all programs > windows update > on the bottom left in that screen you see Installed updates, click it Now search for the Internet explorer 9 and possibly the language pack
If you have the language pack installed deinstall this First (no need to reboot, continue your work) and then deinstall Internet Explorer 9, reboot. Now you have your Internet Explorer 8 back. Possibly updates will need to be installed.

My C drive is 500 GB. I am backing up to aninternal hard drive. I had 170 GB to be copied but when it finished it onlyshows to be 43 GB. On the hard drive also when I put the backup DVD disk in therom and go to properties it shows ZERO on the disk. You can look at the backside of the disk and tell something has been copied to it can someone explainto me where I went wrong. I am using an internal 1 TB hard drive to back up to.If the 43GB back up is correct how you can verify that it has copied all 170GB. According to Windows help section you need a hard drive of at least thesize of your original C drive.
