When i start windows, i cannot open any programme nor install a new programme. A box of WINDOWS MEDIA CENTRE is open all the time and all the programme and data and changed to be open with Windows Media Centre.

Now that I have a few more programmes installed, Word, CorelDRAW etc, what is the correct way to save the files? At the minute everything I save goes into one file called My Documents. Should I somehow be saving files for different programmes in different areas.
It's not to bad at the minute as I only have a few files for Word and CorelDRAW. Most of my work is still on my older XP system.
The images of all desktop shortcuts have disappeared and are not working a long with all of the programme links in the start menu. An error message did appear when originally clicking on a link but now only asks me to 'Choose the programme you want to use to open this file'.
I have read forums about similar problems but none of the solutions have worked. I have also tried system recovery but it wont allow me to restore to a point before the problem occured.I tried restoring to factory settings with the installation disk and installing a windows link repair tool but the problem has remained.
i was wondering if anyone knows or have an idea when Windows 7 will be available on the EPP or Employee Purchase Programme?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi got home put the game into my laptop (2 week old dell inspiron with windows 7) & the usual window didn't pop up like it has with all of the other disks i have put in my laptop (including other dvd's). I then went in to open it manually but it is not recognising a disk. Firstly i know it is not that there is a problem with my laptop as all other disks work on it & secondly it cannot be the actual disc & i have actaully returned 2 thinking that they were faulty, i am now on my 3rd. -I installed Malwarebytes, Avira and Regseeker to take off this virus but it won't allow me to install the programs.
-It won't open anything with a ".exe" file extension.
-I tried opening programs and installing the AVs in Safe Mode but the same "error" message came up as in Normal Mode.
-The Message says: "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Install a program to fix it."
-EVERYTHING worked fine yesterday and early this morning. Nothing in registry was messed with and no options were changed.
i need the stuff on this computer and it isn't backed up so a total reset of the computer is out of the question. the stuff on this computer is worthless to everyone else in the world so why would a malware be on this computer?If i could get the AVs installed and running, I know that I could fix it from there.

However, when i rebooted by computer the interface of windows 7 was different and i every program i open is messed up and text does not show in any program. even the "password" screen to log into my account has a different styled text. Since then, we have found that we can't open any non-Windows inherit programs. Windows did an update, but it didn't help.We can open documents, pictures, notepad, calculator - all the things that would have come with Windows 7, but if it is a program that we have installed, like Chrome, AVG free or AdAware, we can't open it. I double-click and nothing happens.Likewise, when I try to uninstall programs. I tried fixing the issue by removing Azureus, but I get the message that it doesn't look like it can be uninstalled and asks if I want it removed from the programs list.I have successfully gotten ZIP folders to open and use REG files (which is how I got ZIP folders to work), but that's it.

Whenever installing a program lately (can't remember how long -- I've been ignoring it for a while), Windows doesn't respond when I click the .exe installer file. But as soon as I hit Ctrl - Alt - Del and open the Task Manager, Windows suddenly wakes up and installs the program without a hitch. I don't have to do anything in Task Manager; simply opening it is enough. Also, the computer hasn't crashed in this state. If I want to open another already-installed program and use it, I can without any problems. It's just that it completely ignores my command to run the .exe file until I threaten it with Task Manager.
The first couple of times, before I thought of opening Task Manager, I'd double click the .exe file several thousand times, as you do, wondering why it wasn't doing anything. Then, when I opened the Task Manager, it'd try to install the program several thousand times. Now I know to simply double click the .exe file, then hit Ctrl - Alt - Del, and voila, the program is installed.
What I want to know is, why doesn't Windows install the program in the first place?
FYI, the programs I was having trouble with were (from memory) Dropbox, Skype, memoQ (translation memory software) and a few others I can't remember. I doubt that the programs were the problem though. I'm pretty sure this is a Windows problem.

I'm in safe mode right now and no such problems are currently present. This is a newly built computer and the OS is installed on an SSD. After installing Windows I installed drivers from three CDs in the following order: graphics card, sound card, mobo/chipset. No problems appeared to occur. I think prior to installing these drivers Windows was okay as I recall looking up why my internet wasn't working(turned out I need the LAN driver from the latter driver CD)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a fairly new HP Desktop PC. I'm running Windows 7 Home 64-bit SP1. Yesterday I noticed that iTunes won't open when I double-click on the shortcut icon on my desktop. I restarted my computer, same issue. I restarted in Safe Mode, same issueI did notuninstall/reinstall because I also can't open my Spybot-SD. Same thing happens. The process is listed in Task Manager, but the programs just don't open. I have not trieduninstalling/reinstalling the programs because I tried doing a System Restore back to early February. The System Restore was successful but the problem persists. Also, Windows Media Player opens, but it opens weird, wherein it freezes on a white square for a few minutes before finally loading. Also, my DVD burning software, DVD Flick, opens but first it freezes on a yellow square.
It's hard to Google this problem because of all the programs involved, and I'm sure there are more programs that won't open that I'm just not aware of yet. I didn't do anything that I can think of that could've caused the problem (and if I had, the system restore would've fixed it). So I scanned my PC for viruses with Symantec and I also scanned for malware with Microsoft Security Essentials and both scans came up clean. Not being able to use iTunes presents a problem because I can't update my phone or make changes to my phone at all.
