Jun 8, 2012Could someone tell me why my Windows 7 software freezes up a few minutes after start up.Everytime I start my Computer and get into my mail or internet Explorer the screen turns foggy and the shaker keeps running for ever, so I have to do a cold shut down a couple of times before I can get any satisfaction?

This brings back the 'old' desktop and settings.Each time this happens, I have to reinstall my printer & set to default, reactivate various program icons, etc.This is becoming very tiresome as today was the 3rd time this happened.

Nov 20, 2011Has anyone experienced no sound with Windows 7? Running Home Premium 64 bit on an Acer Aspire 5742G. A bit of a search indicates sound issues when people upgrade to 7 from XP etc, but this laptop came with 7 installed already. And there has been sound...sometimes. But more often than not, just no sound.
Troubleshooting doesn't reveal any problems. Apparently everything is "working correctly". So I suppose it could be a hardware fault. Oh and the volume is turned up and not muted
Win 7 Home Prem (64) UPGRADE To Win7 Pro (64)
Dec 10, 2009I emailed Microsoft support this question and got a useless answer back; they just sent me a link to download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, which basically told me what I already knew (that my system is capable of running Windows 7).
So I called them just now and the so-called "tech support" person wasn't much of a help either, she didn't seem too bright and didn't know much about the whole upgrade process, giving me conflicting information. So, I hope someone on here can answer this for me.
I recently bought a new laptop that came pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Then I found out that Home Premium does not have "XP Mode" capability, so I used the Student Discount offer to buy Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (full version not upgrade) from Microsoft's website for $29.99 (what a bargain!). Can anyone tell me FOR SURE, whether I can do just an upgrade (where all my manufacturer's pre-installed applications, drivers, and all my currently installed applications and settings are preserved) or if I MUST do a clean install (reinstalling all of these applications, etc.)?

Oct 28, 2012To start, I have Windows 7, on Sony Vaio laptop. I have been working on the issues with the malware removal team, but now machine looks clean, I am still having issues. When starting the computer and going to the task manager, I can watch explorer.exe start at about 18K memory usage and then grow constantly until it is running with almost all of the computer's physical memory after about seven min. I cannot get the context menu to show up after a few min by right clicking on anything. I had been experiencing "freezing" while playing Eden Eternal (an online role playing game) before that, which made me consider malware and seek help here at BleepingComputer. The freezing has ended, last time I played on that machine at least, but now there seems to be some issue with the explorer.exe taking all of the memory. I haven't been using the machine since I don't trust that there's not something running in the background that shouldn't be. In resource monitor there were "connections" that had "-" for both the name and the PID, but I don't know if that was the malware of if that's normal somehow? Issue with explorer.exe seems to be limited to only one user account, and not the other one. That is to say that if I log on one of the other accounts explorer.exe behaves normally, as far as memory usage.

Jun 12, 2011I'm reimaging one of my home systems that I intend to use as a "sterile" system (I will visit very a very limited selection sites on it, such as banking sites). I'm considering establishing the network location as "Public" instead of "Home", rationale being this would help prevent cross infection from other computers on my home network if they get a worm or virus. I do have friends that come over and hop on my network sometimes and who knows what contamination their systems have. Is this being overly paranoid? Will it cause annoying problems for this sterile system or other systems in my home network? I don't intend to share anything on this system with other computers on my home network. Seems to me that this ought to be the recommended setting for any computer always ... you can always share files using a USB drive if you really need to. Thoughts? Again maybe I am being overly paranoid. Back in the day there used to be worms that would look for ways to hop from system to system over the network, maybe that's much much harder these days. I do have a router between the DSL modem and my home network and I do run Norton Internet Security on all my systems?

Oct 6, 2012i am having a problem with my memory getting tied up / used up and not being able to access it again until i reboot.
machine: dell xps studio 8100
os: win 7,
processor: i7 2.8
ram: 16gb (max it will take)
video: ati radeon 5700 (running 3 monitors)
versions: as far as i know i am running current versions of everything, including video drivers, flash, chrome, etc. (i've tried running chrome with both the build in version of flash and the system version -haven't seen a difference)
browser: i nearly exclusively run chrome / canary with auto-updates so am at the latest builds.what seems to cause me to use up / run out of memory is after i play videos (Internet, netflix, etc.), the memory seems to get used, but is not returned to the system, even if the browser is closed and re-opened.right now for example things are working fine; i rebooted my system a couple hours ago (but have not played any videos). i have adobe lightroom running, picasa, chrome and canary (currently 4 web browser windows open with 52 tabs open). task manager currently shows me using 8.20gb of ram, that seems pretty reasonable to me.
normally my system will keep running properly (if a program is closed, memory is freed up) right up until i start to play any videos (Internet, netflix, etc.) then it will start using up more memory. (of course i expect it to use more memory during playback) however, even if i restart the browser, the memory does not get freed back up. for example, just prior to the reboot, with everything closed, i was using right around 8gb of ram. once i rebooted, i was using 1.something gb of ram prior to opening any programs.however, once i start playing some videos, i never seem to be able to get my ram freed back up again unless i reboot the whole system. this is not just a problem with how much memory the system shows as being available, i frequently actually run out of memory. (task manager will show me as using around 15gb and then everything starts swapping out like crazy).

Ive downloaded countless driver programs which tell you what sound card you have and not one has detected it. IVE ALSO downloaded drivers for the Windows 7 version of my sound (Realtek AC97) and ran windows updates and NONE worked. ive ran the troubleshooter on the sound thing...STILL not detecting any sound card. i tried changing the audio in BIOS from auto - enabled....nothing.

Chkdsk High Memory Usage / Memory Leak?
Jun 1, 2009I find that if I run chkdsk and watch the memory usage in task manager it jumps by about 50MB every 2 seconds or so until it either finishes or hits around 3.2GB at which point my physical memory shows 99% used (I'm running 4GB), and the system of course slows to a crawl.f you just run a quick chkdsk on your boot drive you may not notice it, but try running something longer like chkdsk /r on a flash drive or chkdsk /f on a bigger internal drive (but not your OS drive as this would require a reboot) and watch the memory usage climb. I have duplicated this on both systems I have running Windows 7. My XP machine (checking the same USB flash drive) uses a much more normal amount of memory for chkdsk (20 - 30 MB).

Increased Memory Usage With Added Memory?
Nov 5, 2011I just built a new computer and started with 8GB of memory. A few weeks down the line I purchased another set of the same memory because it was on such a good deal and had great reviews (newegg). It also was working well for me, so I figured maybe more could be better.
I haven't noticed any decrease/increase in system performance except Alt-Tabbing has recently got slower. Also, Windows 7 was sitting tight on 1.3gb to 2gb of memory usage prior to the extra 8 (now 16) being added. Even when gaming, it went up to like 3gb. Now that I've added the extra it's going up to 4.5gb or better. Also, is it possible to speed up my alt-tabbing? It seems to have a good 3-4 second pause in it instead of being immediate like it was.

gSkill 16gb 1866 memory (BIOS shows it at 1866, too)

Mar 26, 2011My 2 year old $400 Acer laptop that has win 7 32 bit home edition locked up while surfing last night and I cannot get it to open.I tried safe mode it hangs up on the starting windows screen. I hit F8 and tried the launch start up repair function to no avail.When the laptop locked up the screen went off white like someone was trying to IM me and nothing opened. I pulled the battery out to shut the laptop down since I didn't like the look of what was happening and none of the buttons or other prompts would work.I have a current version of McAffe and was using Firefox.

Just a few days ago I've started to have an issue where after my computer is running for a couple hours all processes continually increase the amount of memory they are using until I get an out of memory error. Sep 19, 2011I generally have about 6 or so home pages that can change quite frequently, and since upgrading to IE9 it has been much more difficult to manage them. The Home icon is not always present, depending on which shortcut I use to open IE9. And the down arrow next to it is generally not there. I've tried turning on the Command Bar, which helps but takes up more screen real estate than I'd like, because I have quite a few items in the Favorites bar. Is there anyone that has found a better way to manage the homepages?

In addition, the HP store which sold me the laptop installed 4gb of RAM neglecting to tell me that the 32bit version of 7 only supported up to 3. At any rate, I am hoping to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bit edition.But while there is a glut of information online about how to upgrade from Starter, there is little to nothing about Home Basic. Do I have to buy a full copy of 7 Home Premium 64 Bit? Can I buy an Anytime Upgrade that is meant for Starter and apply it to my computer?

Oct 8, 20125 month old Dell XPS 8500 Win 7 64 bit Pro as main computer connected by Wired Adapter, Upgraded Gateway 5632E also running Win 7 64 bit pro as second connected by Wireless. Both running Kapersky successfully. no network problems for 5 mo.
Both were successfully linked using homegroup. Had to take Gateway to a remote location to do a business demo. While there had to link to a local public WiFi. While connecting made mistake and left homegroup.
When Gateway returned to homebase a few days later it was fine, had no problems finding wireless but could not see or rejoin Dell machine homegroup. It would let me set up a new homegroup.
Went to Dell box and found 1) homegroup no longer existed, 2) router and network and wireless printing no longer found - Red X on the taskbar) even though internet was still working fine.
Took nearly a week of trying differernt fixes, on adapter- off adapter- different adapter reboot network, router, even updated router firmware (Yes I went through every ipconfig reset, renew, redecorate etc. I've used netsh functions to try to get evrything to reset. Changes services.msc settings per other posts. Finally in desperation, deleted every sub key in the registry related to network locational awareness and got the Dell to find the network, let me set it up as a "home" network and then even see the invitation to join the Gateway's homegroup.
Then I hit a wall- when I try to join- Win 7 says I can't join the homegroup because the network is not a "home network". Of course troubleshooting is useless and goes into an endless loop. Have searched in desperation for any way to make Win 7 return to a clean slate so it can sense that it really is on a home network without success. Applied the fix-it and hotpatch for when Win 7 gets stuck in public mode. No joy. Deleted the hide wizard subkey as suggested elsewhere. No Joy. Gut feeling says problem must lie in the NLA or peer networking somewhere but where?
Does anyone know of a method or set of steps (short of a clean reinstall of Win 7) to completely clear every thing the OS knows about my network and force it to acknowlege my network is a home network? Is there a registry hack that will clear the problem?
I know I could abandon the homegroup and do conventional file/print share but I am concerned that using that solution won't last as whatever is screwing up the homegroup could eventually screw regular sharing and then I'm back to reformating/reinstalling. I'm just about ready to join the Apple folks so I never have to work on Windows again.

ESET antivirus + Outpost firewall Every time I shut down the computer, I get an error like this:The instruction at 0x72f151d3 referenced memory at 0x72f151d3. The memory could not be written.Sometimes they will auto close, others I will have to force the shutdown.The thing that seems interesting is that there's a pattern to the memory addresses.When it's a software exe crashing, it's always 0x7xxx51d3.When it's explorer.exe crashing, it's always 0x7xxx87bc.

My question is how much memory can this architecture actually see? its 32bit, so shouldn't it only see a max of 4? in the my computer properties, it tells me i have 8, but a bunch of programs tell me i have the 3.25.
Do i need to move to 64x? and what happens with the drivers for my custom built pc? will i be able to find them? (most of my disks wont install 32 bit drivers on Windows 7 beta) i cant really do the vista driver backup with driver max, because i use XP

while installing 7 H.P. it gets to completing installation then freezes up after computer reboots a warning message appears stating windows 7 has failed to install and resume after reboot, and then the same warning message appears.
I tried the roll back installation option and a message flashes on and off to quickly to read.
and Vista will not come up to start over.
any Ideas on what to Do?
