WinXP Pro Workgroup Network & Windows 7 Home Premium: School Dilema?

Mar 25, 2011

I am working as the all-purpose tech at a small school for kids with learning disabilities (no operating budget for IT) and we are in the process of upgrading parts of the network[Disclaimer: I did not setup this network, but I am heavily considering getting rid of everything and rebuilding it from scratch.]Setup:Right now we have an XP Pro Workgroup network with 4 Workgroups (Admin, Classroom, CompLab, Workgroup). We have about 50 computers (40 of them are Dell Optiplex GX 270s running XP Pro SP3, close to identical Hardware configs; the remainders are teacher's laptops and such).

We have 3 new machines (ADMIN workgroup) for the 2 school administrators and the administrative assistant. They are ASUS Essentio Desktops Model CM5570s Running Win 7 Home Premium. (You might start to guess where I'm going with the issues I'm having.)We are running a xerox WorkCentre 7346 w/ accounting, and have a few other printers scattered throughout the network.[Edit]The only machines not running XP Pro SP2/SP3 are the 3 ADMIN machines, my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1545), one laptop running Vista, 3 Macs, and 3 other laptops running Windows 7 [/Edit]Problem:The crux of the problem is with the 3 new machines working with the pre-existing XP Network. One of the new machines replaced our Administrative Assistant's old XP machine which hosted some files that the teachers needed to access (report cards, test results, etc.) When we put in the new machine, the teachers were no longer able to access these files across the network.

Most of the teachers are accessing the new machine (ADMIN1) on the ADMIN Workgroup from the other workgroups (CLASSROOM, COMPLAB, and WORKGROUP) are having issues. When attempting to access the new machine (ADMIN1), the pop-up error comes up:\ADMIN1SharedDocs is not available. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. <br><br>The network path was not found."I believe this to be a permissions and policy issue due to the limitations of Windows 7 Home Premium. We aren't able to fully integrate into the network from the Windows 7 side (tell me if I am off on this)Alternatively, we are getting the error when trying to access the CLASSROOM workgroup from a machine on the CLASSROOM workgroup of:"CLASSROOM is not accessible. [yada yada yada] . <br><br> Not enough storage is available to process this command."

This error pops up on a number of machines on the various workgroups trying to access their own and other workgroups and/or machines. This is most likely due to the 10 connection limit of XP Workgroups which I really want to solve by installing a server w/ SBS 2003 (we have the machine, not the OS, and not installed. . . yet.)Granted there are quite a few problems with the network and the way it is setup, I still have to make things work.We don't have a domain controller and I haven't been able to figure out how they set up the network in the first place, although I have managed to restructure some of the network. I have also begun to create a drawn out network map of infrastructure and after that I'm going to work on the arduous task of mapping out user permissions (which if you don't already know is one of the most time consuming things to do manually)

Network File Sharing With Windows 7 Home Premium - Guest Access Allowed

Dec 24, 2011

Is it possible with the non-Windows 7 machine's shares set to something besides "guest access allowed"? I've tried a few tweaks on my Windows 7 desktop and my Kubuntu 11.04 Linux-running laptop. Nothing has worked. Unless access to a shared directory is set to guest on the laptop, the Windows box keeps asking for a legitimate password, whenever I attempt to 'open' them.

Both machines have the same log-in strings for both basic log-on and Samba. Or do they? I'm presuming there's no separate logon/password required for Windows 7 Home Premium when it comes to file sharing, but as a late Windows XP Professional user (both SP2 and SP3), I'm not taking anything wholly for granted. Any Windows build since the dawn of XP that installs without gpedit.msc is bound to be lacking in other ways, imco.

Home Premium Repeated Loss Of Network

Dec 13, 2009

I've got a Shuttle SK22G2B (AMD Socket AM2) XPC kit that I recently transitioned from the RC 7300 'Ultimate' Windows 7 edition to a paid Windows HP version. Installation was smooth and basic functionality seems to work fine.

However I now have a persistant loss of network connectivity mostly connected with large file UPLOADs, it has happened after long absenses where I don't really have a connecting event but more often than not it happens during a sync with my dropbox.com account or with my windows home server (on the network).

I try to let the Network and Sharing Center repair the connection but that fails, when I try to reboot it usually hangs during the shut down process and requires a reset to get it running again.

This did not happen over 3 months of heavy Windows 7 RC7300 use with EXACTLY the same hardware. When the XPC is showing no connectivity I have full internet and intranet access from my Win Home Server (wired) and netbook (wireless) on the same router.

AMD 64 X2 4400+

2gb crucial RAM

500gb Seagate SATA hdd

ATI Radeon HD4300 vid card

Win 7 Home Premium (32bit)

Onboard NIC - Via Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter, driver v 1.12.0.0 (7/20/2009) - latest version available

D-Link DIR 655 Wireless router fw 1.32NA, 07/09/2009 - latest version

Partition The New 1TB Drive For Dual Boot Setup With Windows 7 Home X64 / WinXP Pro (32-bit)

Nov 11, 2010

The motherboard died on my 3-year-old Compaq, so I just ordered a new computer that comes preloaded with Win7Home Prem x64. It was from Dell Outlet so I couldn't choose the OS. I've been using MCE (XP pro 32-bit) for several years and love it.I'm worried about program and hardware compatibility with Windows 7 x64. I don't use very graphics-heavy apps like CADD, Photoshop, etc. I only plan to do a little video editing with my .avi clips. I also have an older version of Replay AV that I use to record live streaming radio. I don't want to buy a new scanner (Canoscan LiDE 20 - no x64 drivers!) so here are my options:

A-Partition the new 1TB drive for dual boot setup with Windows 7 Home x64 / WinXP Pro (32-bit). I would buy the XP Pro OEM Branded DVD.

B-Install my old 200GB SATA Seagate Barracuda 7200 as a second drive and run XP programs and scanner from that.

C-Buy Win 7 Pro 32-bit OEM Branded discs, remove Windows 7 home x64, and do a complete new install with the new discs, and hope that my XP programs work with XP Mode. (new i5 processor supports virtualization)

Cant Upgrade From Vista Home Premium To 7 Home Premium

Oct 22, 2009

I successfully bought the upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium N, downloaded and extracted it and now I want to install it.

When I choose UPDATE in the intallation dialog it tells me that I cannot upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium ???

Every website from Windows and other people tells me that it IS possible and even the Windows 7 Update Advisor told me that I should not encounter any problems upgrading.

Has anyone of you yet encountered upgrading problems of compatible Vista/7 versions?

Or any other idea what I can do to solve the problem?!

I know that I can make a clean intall of 7, but this would be a pain..

Upgrading From Vista Home Premium To 7 Home Premium?

Apr 17, 2012

Yesterday I was messing around on my brand-new laptop, and I was stupid enough to try a keygen to get Ultimate (I had HP). Surprising. It worked but the copy wasn't genuine obviously. So then I rebooted, pressed F8 at boot. An ran Toshibas recovery to try to get the computer to its out of box state. I got stuck at initializomg (either that or I was impaptient) so I turned off the laptop. Then when I truer to boot I got bootmgr is missing. I have an old vista Hp disk so I installed that for the time being. So my question is, how do I get it back to the original state? I do t have any important data or anything.

Winxp Cannot See Win 7 On Network Places

Aug 11, 2009

I have been round in circles checking settings, and cannot figure this out.

I have wireless network set up at home, and file sharing.

I have 1 win 7 computer and 2 XP computers. I have no prob from Windows 7 getting into XP shared files on network and sharing printer, etc.

My prob lies when I try from my XP computers to see the Windows 7 computer in the network places. It is not there. I can see it in workgroup computers, but can't do anything with it. I try to add it in network places, but it cannot find it by browse or direct typing.

On Windows 7 computer I have it marked to share, have passwords turned off, I have tried to create a homegroup and have removed the homegroup, cause I cannot figure it out.

I am able to access Windows 7 shared files from PS3, so don't understand why I can't from XP. help?

Win7 / WinXP Network Issues

Jan 5, 2010

For all the apparent attention to backward compatibility that MS says they put into Windows 7 I find that a Mixed Windows 7 / WinXp network is really problematic.

I am able to network Windows 7 MyDocuments without too much problem, though not as easily as a Windows 7 / Windows 7 or a WinXP / WinXP network. I am finding it impossible to connect to a second disk on my Windows 7 computer from an XP machine on my network. I can "see" the 2nd drive but am prevented from connecting ("blah, blah is not accessible, contact network administrator...").

One thing I have noticed from perusing this forum is that some people are having problems connecting from XP to 7, while others can not connect from 7 to XP. No consistency that I can see, which is cause for pause in my books.

The sharing permissions are set on the drive.

I hope the problem is mine and not systemic, because if anything is a Windows 7 deal-breaker would be it. Multi-computer organizations are not going to migrate their computer to Windows 7 en-mass, rather one computer at a time.

Any illumination on this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Workgroup / Network Sharing Mac OS X

Oct 10, 2009

I cannot get this to work for the life of me. I have searched this forum, and others.

-I have set the workgroup identically on my windows 7 machine and my 10.6 MBP.

-I CAN smb to my windows 7 machine successfully.

-Neither my windows 7 or mac os x recognize one another in their respective network "browsers"

-With iTunes open on both machines, it successfully recognizes the libraries.

I am not a networking genius, but I'm fairly literate if someone could help me out, please.

This could be a whole separate issue, but even when connected to my windows 7 machine through VPN, the machines don't show up on their respective network "browsers"

Network Streamer Cant See Workgroup But Can Connect

May 1, 2009

I have one PC running 7100 and a Popcorn hour media streamer. Both connected to a router via cable.

Since i upgraded to 7100 from 7077 my PCH now cant see the workgroup in its network browser window but it connects to the shares i have set up on it from my PC.

All three devices have been rebooted many times over that past few days (the PC goes off at night, as does the PCH).

Ive not changed anything on the PCH and nothing on the PC although maybe something was reset when i upgraded. It wasn't a clean install but then it wasn't the previous time and i had no issues.

The PC can see and access the PCH without any problems.

Ive never had to mess with the windows firewall before to get this working but im now thinking maybe i need to.

Any ideas what can have happened. I know i should have done a clean install but as both devices are seeing each other (sort of) starting again is a last resort.

Through various trial/error I have determined I can't access the workgroup from both the Windows 7 and xp on either streamer. In other words, both streamers should be able to access workgroup on my network and neither can. I have tried resetting the router, both pc's, streamers etc. All files/folders set to share. I am not an expert but it seems since both streamers can't access my workgroup, the problem might be with windows.

Vista Home Premium 32bit To 7 Premium, 62% BSOD

Nov 2, 2009

The original OS was Windows XP 32bit SP3. I upgraded this system to Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit SP2 with no issues.

I then went to upgrade the system to Windows 7 Premium. I chose the "Upgrade" install and not the "Clean" install. I've checked the updater to confirm that all my system information was adequate. I uninstalled the ATI Catalyst Controller, iTunes, etc. that it wanted me to. Oddly enough, the ATI Catalyst Controller was the most recent driver that supports Windows 7.

I checked online to see if the hardware was all supported by Windows 7. The Sapphire Vapor-X video card was not compatible or compatible... it simply wasn't on the list of either. The X-Fi Extreme Gamer said it was NOT compatible... yet, I had a driver for Windows 7 and the Windows 7 Application checker said that my sound card was ready for Windows 7... thus a discrepency.

I went on with the installation. I get to the last step where it resets the computer at 62% and I get a BSOD for about 1/3 of a second. It goes by too quickly for me to capture it. It then restarts the computer instantly with the result of "Upgrade was not completed successfully. Restoring prior OS yadda yadda". I've gone through this about 5 times now trying different things.. keeping the Catalyst controller installed, uninstalling the video card, removing the sound card, etc. Nothing seems to work.

It was recommended to me that I do a clean install... however, I have read that many others have done a clean install and theirs STILL doesn't get past the 62%.

Is it my hardware? Do I need to buy MORE hardware now that 7 is out that is on the compatible list?

Home Network Set But Windows 7 Says Can't Join Homegroup, No Home Network

Oct 8, 2012

5 month old Dell XPS 8500 Win 7 64 bit Pro as main computer connected by Wired Adapter, Upgraded Gateway 5632E also running Win 7 64 bit pro as second connected by Wireless. Both running Kapersky successfully. no network problems for 5 mo.

Both were successfully linked using homegroup. Had to take Gateway to a remote location to do a business demo. While there had to link to a local public WiFi. While connecting made mistake and left homegroup.

When Gateway returned to homebase a few days later it was fine, had no problems finding wireless but could not see or rejoin Dell machine homegroup. It would let me set up a new homegroup.

Went to Dell box and found 1) homegroup no longer existed, 2) router and network and wireless printing no longer found - Red X on the taskbar) even though internet was still working fine.

Took nearly a week of trying differernt fixes, on adapter- off adapter- different adapter reboot network, router, even updated router firmware (Yes I went through every ipconfig reset, renew, redecorate etc. I've used netsh functions to try to get evrything to reset. Changes services.msc settings per other posts. Finally in desperation, deleted every sub key in the registry related to network locational awareness and got the Dell to find the network, let me set it up as a "home" network and then even see the invitation to join the Gateway's homegroup.

Then I hit a wall- when I try to join- Win 7 says I can't join the homegroup because the network is not a "home network". Of course troubleshooting is useless and goes into an endless loop. Have searched in desperation for any way to make Win 7 return to a clean slate so it can sense that it really is on a home network without success. Applied the fix-it and hotpatch for when Win 7 gets stuck in public mode. No joy. Deleted the hide wizard subkey as suggested elsewhere. No Joy. Gut feeling says problem must lie in the NLA or peer networking somewhere but where?

Does anyone know of a method or set of steps (short of a clean reinstall of Win 7) to completely clear every thing the OS knows about my network and force it to acknowlege my network is a home network? Is there a registry hack that will clear the problem?

I know I could abandon the homegroup and do conventional file/print share but I am concerned that using that solution won't last as whatever is screwing up the homegroup could eventually screw regular sharing and then I'm back to reformating/reinstalling. I'm just about ready to join the Apple folks so I never have to work on Windows again.

Windows Network Location: Public Versus Home At Home?

Jun 12, 2011

I'm reimaging one of my home systems that I intend to use as a "sterile" system (I will visit very a very limited selection sites on it, such as banking sites). I'm considering establishing the network location as "Public" instead of "Home", rationale being this would help prevent cross infection from other computers on my home network if they get a worm or virus. I do have friends that come over and hop on my network sometimes and who knows what contamination their systems have. Is this being overly paranoid? Will it cause annoying problems for this sterile system or other systems in my home network? I don't intend to share anything on this system with other computers on my home network. Seems to me that this ought to be the recommended setting for any computer always ... you can always share files using a USB drive if you really need to. Thoughts? Again maybe I am being overly paranoid. Back in the day there used to be worms that would look for ways to hop from system to system over the network, maybe that's much much harder these days. I do have a router between the DSL modem and my home network and I do run Norton Internet Security on all my systems?

I click on it like normal but this time i get a message saying 'The user profile service service failed the logon' 'user profile cannot be loaded'. It then refreshes the page and returns me back to the logon page and if i press enter the same thing just keeps repeating itself. Other option on this page are the shutdown/sleep/restart option and a little box in the bottom left corner called ease of access with various options, but none that seem relevant to the situation.

Windows 7 Home Premium Won't Log On At All

Jan 22, 2012

I came to my laptop about five hours ago and have not been able to do anything with it since. I had it in hibernate and as I flicked the lid up it shut itself down - I assumed for updates. Nothing happened.I turned it on, started windows normally as it hadn't shut down properly and waited for the log on screen. It hung on "Please wait" for about five minutes with the circle going round and round and round, then nothing, just the home page no user no password no log on. I turned it off and turned it on again while Google'ing for answers. Seeing as I haven't been able to log in at all a lot of the answers I haven't been able to try, so far I have tried: to boot normally and end up with the hanging screen.booting safe mode, it loads files, finishes with windowssystem32DRIVERSCLASSPNP.SYS then restarts and I'm back to square one.booting in safe mode with networking and command prompt - same as above. F8, repair, system restore, tried all points with errors:System restore failed to extract the file (C:) from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during system restore (0x8000ffff) [code]I downloaded Windows 7 about 18 months ago from a student offer while I was at university - I was sent a CD/DVD and put it somewhere very safe, so safe I don't even know where it is!If it is any help, I also hear a ticking noise from the laptop when it gets to the start up screen just as it begins to hang, it then stops and I end up having to turn it off or it restarts itself.
