Vastly Inconsistent Bandwidths Across Multiple Windows 7 Machines

Sep 25, 2011

I recently started a subscription with Comcast for a 50mb Down/10 mb Up high speed internet service.I am using 3 different websites to analyze the download speed of this connection on multiple computers (speedtest.comcast.net, speedtest.net, speakeasy.net/speedtest).The issue is, the 50mb download speed works for some of my machines but not for others. The following machines receive the full 50mb (or higher) download speeds when checking with the above sites: [code] When I try this with my other Windows 7 machines, I get results of less than 10mb down. These machines are: [code] These tests were conducted with direct hard line hookup to the modem, no router.I know for a fact that the service is working at full capacity, since I get the full download/upload speeds with the 3 machines. But I cannot figure out why the other two are more than 80% slower. All of the firewall settings are identical across the Windows 7 machines. I tried starting my my ASUS machine in safemode, to see if some particular process was slowing things down, but the slower internet speeds remained.I was hoping that someone might have some idea what is causing this, or maybe some idea of what to compare between the two machines. While I am fairly computer-savvy, I don't know a lot about networking.

Multiple Machines Slaved To One Monitor Surface

Mar 14, 2012

I have a suspicion this isn't even remotely possible.but I'm interested in this concept, so I'd love enlightenment from the knowledgeable elite that frequent this forum.I'm interested in running multiple monitors, let's say 6, but having a second machine power 3 of them. Now with software like Synergy or Input Director, all you really get is a network-based peripheral seamless sharing effect. What I would like to do is to run a single monitor surface over multiple machines. i.e. it would be like slaving the second machine's graphics cards to power extra displays, but the data for said displays would be fed to the master machine.

Windows 7 64, Slow, Inconsistent Internet Access?

May 15, 2011

(In summary - cant get the download speeds I am expecting on my new computer - and sometimes cant get connected to the Internet at all)I am having trouble browsing the internet - but the trouble is the "symptoms" keep changing. So its very hard for me to diagnose the problem.Basically - my browsing (download) speed varies from 0.5 mbps to 8 mbps and sometimes will cut out all together for prolonged periods. Typically it stays at about 2mbps. I am used to having a steady 8 mbps. I thought it might be an issue with my ISP - so I set up another computer next to my new one and ran speed tests simultaneously (one right after the other). The old computer was consistently getting ok results whilst my new one was not - so I think its unlikely to be an ISP issue. There were no other computers on the network at the time.

I thought it might be hardware related (it is a new computer) so I ran one of those linux live discs on my new machine - and again got good results - whilst when I returned to windows - I get poor speeds again. So this leads me to think it is not a hardware or a wireless network issue. (Linux wasnt running as much stuff as win 7 was). What is especially frustrating is sometimes it works fine on windows and sometimes it doesnt - and there doesnt seem to be any obvious cause. Also since it keeps fluctuating its very hard to tell if what you do is fixing it - or if its just naturally reverted back to normal. Further - sometimes I can be getting half my normal expected speed (4 mbps) but as I dont use that much bandwidth I wont notice until it drops below 2.nd in what may be a completely different issue sometimes I will get zero downloads speed (but wireless strength remains high) - if I go to system config and type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" this "seems" to fix this issue - but not the slow speed issueIts my first win 7 computer.

Its a samsung RV511 with Windows 7 home premium (64 bit edition) Norton security preinstalled. I have installed chrome and 3ds max. I have installed all the windows updates and all my hardware drivers are up to date. I am connecting to the internet through a wireless router. I set it up initially as a home network - tried changing settings to "work" didnt seem to do anything.

Windows 7 is up and running again, though the amount of space left, is still identical as it was before increasing the partition.

Windows Computer management shows (graphically) the new size (now 34.18GB) where in the same screen, just above the graphical presentation, the old partition size is shown (24,36GB). The latter is also show if I use explorer.

Monitor Display Numbers Inconsistent

Nov 11, 2010

In Windows CP Display Settings (and in Nvidia CP) my left/main display is 1 and right is 2. In Windows CP Color Management the left is 2 and the right is 1. I would ignore this except that at least a couple applications now open on opposite displays. One is a monitor color calibration program (which also identifies them reversed) and the other a Raw Image Converter. And I don't trust that the calibration program loads the profiles separately. This happened after I reinstalled Nvidia video drivers trying to fix random bsod from firefox and IE8 - which seems to have worked.

Sudden Inconsistent Wireless Connection

Jun 23, 2012

I've tried connecting my computer directly via ethernet and I still have occasional issues with my internet. Previously, I was using a wireless setup and the connection would drop every so often, so I tried changing the router, changing the channel, resetting everything, but nothing helped, and this problem was consistent on multiple computers. So I finally moved my router 3ft from my computer and still had connection issues, so I connected my computer directly to my WRT54g router which made things slightly better, but I would still get an occasional dropped signal or slow connection, and the yellow exclamation would come up. Now I'm connected to the modem directly, and its better, but I still get an occasional slow down or disconnect. What do you guys suggest? As I've simplified the system, the performance has gotten better, but not 100% from what it used to be. Are there things that I can check/do on my computer that may help? Everything (router, modem) seems to be working fine, the lights blink like they always have, until the connection drops of course, but could there still be an internal issue with the router or modem?

Laptop GPU Overheating GPU Fan Speed Inconsistent?

Jan 15, 2013

Haven't had a problem with my laptop in a long time, but having an issue. Specs in "My specs"My computer was getting real sluggish and I realized it was quite hot.Usually, my laptop blows out hot air as it is a gaming laptop, but it doesn't seem to be doing that. I looked in speedfan, and couldn't see any speeds for my computer, but the gpu was hitting 80C. topped out at 82C and I turned it off. Fan was not blowing out air at all...So I took of the bottom panel of the laptop so I could see the fan and the fan was moving every now and then. at 70C, the fan was not even moving and it started heating up again.... the fan didn't turn back on while it heated up to 75C so i turned it off again. The fan is moving slowly when it moves, but it is like it isn't being controlled as it should.

Also tried to blow out dust, took off heatpipes/heatsink and reapplied. I am travelling so I don't have thermal paste, but thermal paste looked good still. I had reapplied thermal paste recently so it still is in good shapeDownloaded MSI Afterburner and it seems the Fan speed is not changeable in there... its up to 75C again Any suggestions on what I can do to check the GPU fan speeds or reset the control for it so it spins back up as it should?

Wireless Adapter Inconsistent At Finding Networks

Dec 5, 2009

I've been having a problem for a while now with my wireless adapter. I know it's not the router because all of my roommates are able to use it fine and I usually can't see the connections at school or any public place.

The problem is that most of the time there will be no networks to connect to according to my computer (connection symbol has an x on it), even though there is. I have upgraded from Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit) to Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit). When I first (clean) installed windows 7 it worked fine for 2-3 weeks but now it rarely can find networks and when it does it may only be for 2 minutes.

I've tried reinstalling windows 7 and it works for a few hours and then goes back to not working properly. I've tried reinstalling the drivers not no success and I've tried upgrading to Intel's specific windows 7 64-bit drivers to no improvements. I've called Dell and their limited technical support couldn't help me.

My Wireless adapter is an:

Windows 7 Machines Can't Get Network But XP Can

Nov 6, 2009

I've recently installed some windows 7 machines on our network and they don't seem to be getting valid network configs. It sees the correct DHCP info and DNS servers and you can ping the gateway and other computers on the same subnet but when you try to ping other subnets or out to Google it won't go.

You can see local computers on the same subnetwork and even view webpages on the server on the subnet but everything else network wise outside of the subnet doesn't work.

We have a subnet firewall and it is set to allow everything on the trust side out on any port to any computer. I've even made a rule that let everything in from the outside (untrust) on every port to these windows 7 machines and they still don't get an identifiable network.

My windows XP machines work perfectly though.

Has anyone else seen this?

Multiple Users On Multiple Windows 7-64bit Systems?

Feb 13, 2013

We have three medical clinics and the front desk staff float from clinic to clinic depending on their schedule. I only started here a few months ago and I am working on upgrading their Dell xp systems to Windows 7 systems. The problem begins to crop up when say a user named Sally will come in and sit down at this system for the first time.. Well, she needs to login, click on outlook icon, let it find her exchange PST and copy settings to her user profile, then she launches the application for the scanner that she uses to scan in ID's and insurance cards for every patient coming in.. The scanner is set to default settings and needs to be tweaked on color depth and double sided, etc.. Then after that, she needs to launch her Medical EMR application.. and then choose various options in the citrix client, ..TL;DR - Each user needs to spend 20 minutes resetting the defaults at this updated system.
Well this is fine except, I am planning on updating 2 front desk systems at each clinic, the user Sally will need to do all these things EACH time she finds herself sitting down at a system I just swapped out the previous evening. My thought is this, put a single system down in one clinic and let it sit a week giving most of the float users a chance to work on it for a day, setting all of their preferences etc.Once I get a bunch of them with user profiles on the local drive, grab an image of that drive and just deploy that to each system I roll out..Couple issues I am running into:First would be that I would have to register each Windows 7 copy with a new serial, which I have The next issue is, we have a mis-mash of Dell optiplex systems. 330's - 380's even a couple 320's..

Ad Hoc Networking / Internet Access Issue Between Windows 7 / WXP Machines

Aug 18, 2012

1. my machine is a Getac B300 with a Windows XP Professional 32-bit/Windows 7 Professional 64-bit dual boot.

2. My wife's machine is a Toshiba U500 with Windows 7 Professioanl 64-bit.

Normally, I use the U500 as a hub: I connect it to the internet using a 3G-enabled Sony Ericsson Elm that I control through Sony Ericsson PC Suite 6.011.00* (I have an unlimited connectivity plan.) As soon as the U500 is connected, I set up a WEP-encrypted ad hoc network and connect my B300 (regardless of which system I happen to be booted into) and my wife's iPhone.** I can do the same if I choose to boot into Windows 7 on my B300 and use that as the hub.My question however, is as to why I can't get this whole setup to work out with Windows XP. I normally use the exact same way to connect to the internet (Elm and SE PC Suite), and I've attempted to set up an ad hoc network when I'm booted into Windows XP (through Windows and through Intel Proset), and I even managed to get the U500 and my wife's iPhone to connect to the network, but neither machine would get any internet access, even though I made sure to turn on Internet Connection Sharing for the connection. So I'm beginning to wonder if it's even possible to get it to work with XP (as opposed to 7) being the hub.

Can't Connect With XP Machines

Jan 26, 2009

I have a home network with 7 or 8 XP machines. All are on the same workgroup. All share EVERYTHING. All have passwords. All are logged in with an ADMINISTRATOR account. All can see each other on the network. They all talk to each other just fine. All the GUEST accounts are turned ON.I loaded Windows 7 on a machine, and turned on sharing for drive C: I gave everyone ALL permissions. I also went into the Network and Sharing Center. I had no idea what a "HomeGroup" was, so I went a few more menus deep and found the Workgroup setting. I set that up with the name of my workgroup. From the Windows 7 machine, I can see all the XP machines on the network, and they can see the Windows 7 machine. But when I try to view anything (drive C: , for example), I get the "you might not have permission to view this network resource....". I get the same thing when I try to log on to the Windows 7 machine from the XP machines.Since I can't log on to my XP machines, I also can't connect to, and use the printers attached to them.I basically want a big, open, flat network. No security at all between machines. What do I need to do?

Can't See NAS On XP Machines On Network

May 16, 2009

So I have a network with 3 computers, a readynas, and multiple network printers.

Two machines have 64 bit RC 1, one has XP.

XP machine can see both Seven machines, and NAS.

64 bit machine one can see everything as well.

64 bit machine two could see everything when I did the first install of RC. I reinstalled to fix some boot manager issues, and now it cannot see the XP machine, nor the NAS from windows explorer. I can connect to the readynas through it's IP address in a browser no problem, I have full internet and networking between it and the first 64 bit machine.

No homegroup is set up on either seven machine. The network is set to Home. Drivers are installed for the Ethernet properly, latest drivers.

I looked through settings and everything seems to be gravy. What am I missing. Nothing changed between the two installs except 18 hours of time.

Can't See/connect To Other Machines On Network When VPN'ed In

Dec 27, 2011

I have VPN service running on my Linksys DD-WRT router at home, so I can VPN back into my home network when using unsecured wireless internet on travel. I also have remote desktop port forwarding to my home machine if I want to just remote desktop in without using the VPN. However, often times I will VPN in, then remote desktop to my machine. Lately, I can VPN in, but can't see any other machines on the network so remote desktop to the machine's 192.168.x.x address on the local network doesn't work. I used to be able to do this and I'm not sure what has changed. The home machine runs Windows 7 and the laptop I use on the road for VPN'ing back in runs Windows XP. why after I VPN in to the home network I can't see any other machines on the network anymore? I have a folder shared on the home machine that I'd like to map to my laptop once I've VPN'ed in but can't do that either since it can't see the machine.

I've got all the sharing options enabled on the Windows 7 machine as well as the XP machine. Network discovery is turned on as well. No clue what has happened with this. The DHCP pool is 192.168.1.2-150 and the VPN pool consists of only 2 addresses of 192.168.1.160 and 192.168.1.161.

I am using "home" network but not joined a homegroup. Network discovery is on. File sharing on. Contrlled by username and password NOT by homegroup.

I also think I have it set to send LT and NTLM ntlm v2 is applicable in the local security policies. The windows 7 machine has a static ip set.
