The windows 7 Home premium 64-bit currently installed is upgraded from vista. The upgrade key and disk are available as well as in the HD. The current goal is to upgrade from an Q8300 to a i5-2500K, with the appropriate mobo (asus P8P67 M-Pro) and ram (8gb ddr3 g.skill 1333), what are the necessary steps/advice when doing so w/o purchasing a new OS?

I have been told in the past I cannot replace one and not the other due to my CPU/Motherboard being 1366 pin which is no longer in make.
I am having to install a new hard drive on a friend's computer. The thing is though, he doesn't have the install disc or even the sticker with his Vista code on it. So I wanted to know if it is possible to install a copy of Windows 7 OEM onto the new hard drive (nothing else in the computer has changed--same mobo, RAM, etc). Is this possible or will the mobo have issues with a new Windows OEM?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a legitimate copy of Windows Vista with key codes etc and I have a legitimate upgrade disk for Windows 7. I had Windows 7 installed on a previous system build which had a HD crash and now I am starting again from scratch (wiyh backed up data).
Like a dolt, I installed Wondows 7 before I remembered it was an upgrade edition. I've looked all over the MS site and don't see a method I can use to Activate Windows 7 from this point. way to use my legitimate Windows disks and keys without having to wipe the drive, install Vista and then install Windows 7 yet again.
It's aggravating to have legitimate software and not be able to use it without needing to trick the system - surely there is a way to not have to start all over?
I've installed the Windows 7 upgrade from Vista onto my C drive - I was careful about making sure I didn't do a custom installation because I wanted to keep my files and programs. After the installation - my programs are still installed, the file folders are still there, but the folders on my D drive are empty. My music, photo, video, and document libraries are completely emptyOther threads have said to look in the Windows.old folder but there is no Windows.old folder on my computer. I had a few folders with documents on the desktop that are intact - so why would it delete some files but not others?

1.) MSI Mobo, AMD 4200+, 2GB RAM, etc. (Look in my stats for the desktop)
2.) HP 6735s, AMD Turion X2, 2.5GB RAM, 256MB Dedicated Radeon HD 3200.
The MSI ran Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I had everything I wanted on there so I didn't want to do a clean install. Once the Seven upgrade finished, it was fantastic. The only program that I already had that didn't work was Daemon Tools. However AIM still worked, and you can't install AIM from Windows Seven.
Now on my laptop, it came with Vista, but I wanted Seven. So I did a clean install, because I didn't want all that HP garbage that comes with them. Now I have an issue with sleep. When my PC goes to sleep, and I wake it back up, it runs ok, but then when I go through certain tasks it hangs.
Sometimes if I awake it with my wireless off, it won't come back on, it won't recognize plugged in add ons, and when I go file searching it hangs, like if indexing is messed up. I am considering, rolling back, getting Vista all the way to SP1, downloading AIM, and whatever else I need, and just upgrading it like I did my PC.
Also, the third PC which is a Dell does not perform as well as it should, but does fine in Vista.
I am not a Windows expert, but from deduction, I can conclude that Windows Seven stability is greatly enhanced when it is upgraded from Windows Vista.
Going through an upgrade to Windows 7 (Ultimate x64 from Vista Home Premium x64) and saved the media center setup for last before I move my files back to the original locations. However, I am having problems with the TV setup. I have made no hardware changed during the upgrade and have been using the Hauppague 2250 WIN TV HVR-2250. I reinstalled the WMC specific drivers for Widows 7 and went through the process, and to summarize, no go. Setup manually and went to a channel to check this and got the message "Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly. Restart Windows Media Center or restart computer." I am just connecting the OTA antenna and pulling the local digital signals (no cable) so it is just limited to that signal. Here is where I think the problem may have originated.During the setup, I relocated all default user profile directories to another partition (away from the standard system drive) through the registry. I am assuming that doing this, I moved the file location where the source file is directed to this partition and WMC is still looking in the "default" location for the video source so I will need to edit the registry to change the default location to the new user profile location.
How I drew this conclusion:I went ahead and installed WinTV v.7 because i wanted to record some old VCR footage through the s-video connection. Was having similar problems where the program was reverting to the default location (the "C" drive), and it was not picking up the TV signal. I changed the default location (to locate the "buffer" and "data" file in the program to the new user location and that straightened everything out for that program. So the assumption is that WMC is experiencing the same problem and i need to modify the default location in the registry to redirect WMC.
1. Are there multiple registry edits that need modified or is there a single location where these edits need to take place.
2. Since you do not have an option to edit directly in WMC, if I make these changes in the registry, reboot & restart the WMC setup process, will the setup process automatically revert to the original ("C" drive) location or will these changes hold through the setup process and I can go through the automatic setup process without problems. (Or do i have to go with the manual process).
recently went from the pre installed vista on my HP dv6920ea laptop to 7enterprise.
When i put in a cd or usb key there is no autorun box that appears now.
Also ive lost the pre installed cd / dvd burning / copying program. Where might i find that again?
So I'm trying to upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit. I boot it up, do the clean install, works like a charm for a while, restarts a couple times. And then it just goes blank when the username screen should load up. I've tried repairing the OS, reinstalling Vista and then reinstalling 7 again. I dunno what else to try at this point. But every time I open up a video on my WMP it starts to play then stops. The PC then opens up a SV Host program that uses up 80% of the processor. So I have no video playing and my PC won't hardly work at all till I cntrl alt del and close the SV host.
What can I do to make this OS work correctly? The PC is an HP m9500z.

When I play anything that uses flash, the program will freeze up and have to be ended. After this point, the sound on my computer is completely gone until I restart the system. Additionally, I cannot access the volume control panel or anything that deals with the sound settings after this particular event occurs. My problem with following these instructions is that I do not have 'Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones' in the list of playback devices. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to go from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7. The 32 bit Vista was installed by mistake. My system can handle a 64 bit OS. Now I have finally found the time to upgrade. But the 64 bit installation DVD can't be read from my OS. I have tried setting up my CMOS so that I can boot from the DVD but I have run into some issues. First of all, when I look at my keyboard during the boot procedure, I noticed that the little light which indicates that one row of buttons are to be used for F1 - F12 keys, the little green led light goes on and off. Sometimes, during the boot process, it is on, sometimes it is off.
The CMOS procedure tells me I can hit F12 and set the boot order. I can hit F12 but when I go into that menu, I notice my keyboard is dead. The CPU does not accept any commands from me. So I need to power off and power on and try again. The CMOS procedure tells me I can hit DEL and that launches the whole CMOS utility. There I can set the boot order so that the DVD is run first. But when I save and exit, I notice my keyboard is dead again. This time, the screen is showing things being set and loaded and I am prompted to hit any key to show I am sure that I want to boot from the DVD.
I hit the Y key and I hit the spacebar, but it becomes clear that my input is ignored since my keyboard is being ignored. And the ol' Vista OS is loaded. Is there any way to set things up in the VISTA OS to force a boot from the DVD? I guess I can load the OS in save mode and format the C drive, but if I do that I might risk having a dead computer since the CMOS does not seem to be trusting enough to boot from the DVD drive even if you tell it to.

However, when it restarted, the screen is now changing from red to bright green, to blue, to gray, darker gray, gradient white/gray, black, and repeat. Is it supposed to do this? It seems like the hard drive is still active as the indicator light flickers, but I haven't seen any tutorial that mentions this happening. I'd previously had Vista Home Premium 64bit installed, and everything was fine apart from loading speeds, odd crashes etc. I bought a student edition copy of Windows 7 Professional (64bit) from software for students.com. I did a check to see if the pc was good to go with a windows 7 update tool, and had no errors. Also checked if it was compatible going from home premium to professional. And all was good on that front.
Ok, so I bought the bootable disk, and put it in the pc ready to install. All goes well until the last part where it copies over files from previous windows, and then the display goes from normal to a green/yellow. White is no longer white, more a yellow, and all reds and blues all become a wash of greeny yellows too. The installation completes, and no driver updates for either graphics, display or windows updates remedies this.
I've tried printing screen and emailing to my iphone, and the display is perfect! I've reinstalled twice, and again all colours are bang on until the same point in the install, and then it reverts to the yellow/green display. I've now just tried a clean install deleting the old partition, and surprise surprise its gone green/yellow again. It can't surely be the monitor if all boot up screens and during installation is displayed correctly can it? Same goes for drivers.
