Oct 30, 2009By default, to upgrade you have to start the install from a running OS. Is it possible to boot from the DVD and perform the upgrade if for various reasons your current OS won't boot properly?

Triple Booting Upgrade
Jun 25, 2009I'm planning on taking advantage of the price cuts announced today and would like to run W7 home Premium. I am currently triple booting with partitions for XP, W7-RC, and Linux. Would installing an upgrade version of W7 overwrite or otherwise disable the XP system, or would I need to purchase a 'full' version? I want to be able to keep that as is for the other member of the household.

Apr 24, 2012I upgraded my pc components and now it will not start at all. As far as I can see all the bios settings are correct. On first start up a message come up first saying no disks found, then when I click onto the bios menu i have AHCI mode enabled and it detects SSD and CD drive absolutely fine. First I tried booting from original SSD with windows 7 already installed. Kept getting BSOD every time I get to windows loading screen.
Then after reading on forums people were re-installing windows back on to the SSD, but when trying to boot from the cd drive(yes its a bootable disc) nothing happens and it just goes to the windows repair screen then does nothing after attempting to repair. i have tried removing the SSD so only the cd drive is visible but then it comes up with the message "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key"
I have removed graphics card and tried on board graphics.
I have tried barebones.
I have tried new cables.
I have cleared Cmos + update
My Components:
Mobo: AsRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 (NEW)
CPU: intel core i3 processor LGA1155 (NEW)
Memory: Corsair Dominator 4GB 133mhz (TW3X4G1333C9D) (OLD)
PSU: Hyper 630w (OLD)
SSD: ocz sata 2.0 120gb (OLD) 1month old

All the old components were working previously.
Difference Between Running Repair Install From Windows Or Booting From Original Disk Then Selecting Upgrade Install?
Feb 20, 2011Per microsoft I need to do try a repair install from original disk. Is there a difference between running repair install from Windows or booting from original disk then selecting upgrade install? Is one or the other preferred? Directions say both attempt to preserve installed programs, but not all drivers, and both require reinstalling all the 60 or so windows updates released after my disk. so no differences there.

And if so, how exactly can this be done? I have a laptop running Win7 and ideally would like the option of trying, or being able to run, Win 8 without losing the original and familiar Win7 OS.Some websites say this is possible and suggest partitioning the hard drive (C) and installing Win8 in a separate partition. But it is not clear whether this requires a complete, separately-purchased original Win8, or whether it can be done using the Win8 upgrade (as in theory I assume the upgrade would normally use, or overwrite and replace, the existing original Win7 OS).As a separate but related question, I would also be interested to know - if a dual boot installation is indeed possible using the Win8 upgrade - whether the Win8 OS can be installed and run from a separate external hard drive connected via USB, rather than from a partition on the C drive.

Attempts to install Vista with Win 7 RC running or booting from the Vista disc lead to error code 0x80070103, insufficient free space. My HDD has > 450 Gb free space in 2 partitions. Do I need to reformat the HDD in order to install Vista over Win 7?

Nov 30, 2009Customer dropped off a laptop telling me that his Windows upgrade had failed.
It's a new HP DV6 that had Vista pre-installed on it.
I've taken a look at it, and there's a "Windows.old" folder on the root of C:, which is of course a back up of all his data.
There's also a batch file inside the folder with the following inside of it:
"REM Dummy file for NTVDM"
I'm wondering if there's a way to "continue" the upgrade / merging process? He has asked me to re-install all of his software the way he had it. So i'm hoping there's an easier way to continue where he left off.
I know Windows 7 creates a "Windows.old" folder when upgrading from XP. Not sure why one was created for a Vista to Windows 7 upgrade though.

Dec 24, 2012I have a pc with Windows XP pro 32bit retail version. First I have made an image, just in case. Then I have upgraded it to windows 8, 64bit by using the retail upgrade DVD and clean install. However, I found out that my motherboard is so old (5 years old) that there are no drivers for win8 and after asking ASUS they said that the motherboard is not supported any more and that there will be no new drivers for it. I tried using win7 drivers but it did not work and without correct drivers a lot of things does not work (in particularly hdmi port).What I want to do now is to revert to my image (windows xp), buy a Windows 7, 64bit upgrade retail DVD and upgrade windows xp to windows 7 for which there are drivers for my motherboard.
1) Can I use windows xp retail (whose product key has already been used to upgrade to win8) image to upgrade to windows 7 retail? will the activation of windows 7 succeed? I want to use clean install again since i upgrade from 32bit to 64bit
2) If the answer to question 1 is a yes, how does microsoft prevent users from using the same windows image file to upgrade different pc's? I mean, theoretically, I can make an image of pc1, copy it to a hard drive of pc2 (even if it will result in erroneous installation due to different specs) and upgrade both systems by using two VUP product keys which are cheaper than one VUP + one retail product keys
3) Can I use windows 8 upgrade DVD which is not used any more to upgrade another PC?
Upgrade Key - Use The Upgrade Anytime Through Windows
Feb 27, 2010I purchased Windows 7 Professional through the Ultimate Steal.
Downloaded it, put it on a disk also.
It will go through the start of the setup and copy files etc, and then it will give an error and say to install from a current version of windows I need to use the upgrade anytim through windows.
But when I go to upgrade anytime it asks for an upgrade key, but all I have with the purchase was a product key and it says that I can't use the product key.
any help?

Jan 6, 2013I have four physical drives in this system. Until last month, I was booting from a drive with three partitions, C:, D:, X:, where C:contains Windows 7 Pro; the others are data. The other physical drives are also data (not bootable). I added an SSD and cloned C: onto that drive with Acronis Trueimage. In order to get it to boot, I had to add an entry to the BCD on what should now be the old c: and keep that as the boot drive in my BIOS. I'd really like to NOT be reliant on that spinning drive to boot, so I found EasyBCD. Booted from the SSD, I told EasyBCD to designate c: as the boot drive.When I tell the BIOS to boot from the SSD, I get a Disk Read Error. So I go back to booting from the spinning drive.

I managed to give the USB the first option for booting, nevertheless, the machine doesnt respond to boot from the USB
What might be the issue? What should the USB contain to be bootable?
W7 Only Booting With DVD
Oct 27, 2009I guess the problem is related to the setup and installation process I'll leave it here, feel free to move the thread though.
I downloaded Windows 7 from DigitalRiver, made a bootable .iso, burned it and started the setup. I then formatted C: where Vista was located and had Windows 7 installed onto C:.
It works perfectly with the DVD inserted, but whenever I try to boot without the DVD the Bios says something like:
file:/windows/system32/winload.exe
status: 0xc0000428
Info: windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file
What I did now was to go to the setup and open up a command line and then I did chdsk /R which said the partition was NTFS, could not be locked and that it was read only.
Then I did ScanOs which gave me 0 installations found. Afterwards FixMbr and FixBoot which were "completed successfully" and last but not least RebuildBCD which said 0 was fixed but it was again completed successfully.
Long story short, nothing has changed. Still the same error.
Plus: After that message in the bios I can press either esc or enter. Enter will then get me another screen where I can choose the OS I'd like to boot and it only says Windows Vista there but that selection takes me back to the initial "digital signature blabla" screen.
So, is there still a little part of Vista left somewhere that messes up the boot process or what's up?
Booting From Usb How To Do It
Jan 7, 2010I have an acer laptop that i upgraded from vista to 32bit windows 7 which was installed a few months ago through my USB because my cd drive doesnt work. Now I am getting the unmountable boot volume blue screen error so I am trying to boot the installation from my USB. It gets past "windows is loading files", then it goes to starting Windows with the logo... but after that I get a black screen with just the mouse arrow.

Oct 15, 2009Ok so i have created a VHD of my system (dual boot of xp and Windows 7) using Disk2vhd. It's now sitting on my USB HDD which i am able to create a new VM in XPM using that as a HDD. Turned on the VM and everything looks fantastic. Selected windows 7 boot and it booted fine. But when i go to boot Xp it just load and then goes black.
I think this is a restrictions on XPM not allowing to boot to a Xp VHD, Y/N?

What is going on!? BSOD While Doing Nothing Or Just After Booting
Sep 2, 2012I've got a new copy of windows 7 (32 bit version) I have got 4 GB ram only 3,25 in use (like I had on the XP version, running on the same PC) and after I boot up the PC I just look at the desktop, play with some random games, create and delete folders, do some little stress to the RAM or sometimes just doing nothing. The only boot that works is safe mode and its variants. Things that I've done in the past 7 days:
- I checked RAM integrity - no errors
- Everything is up to date (drivers, everything) - it BSOD'ed even with a fresh copy of Windows 7
- I use wireless if that is a problem, found some errors about it and will post them after this list
- Enabled services and disabled them VIA msconfig (toying around I found out that it WONT CRASH with any internet service on normal mode)
- I checked Windows 7 compatibility and it's 100% compatible
- Tried to update BIOS but I don't think it will solve anything anyways
- Used dozens of registry cleaners (CCleaner and lots; lots more) - still nothing
- Put a second HDD on my machine with Windows 7 same version, it still crashed, but on the other machine the second HDD works great.

Dual Booting - XP/W7
May 15, 2009I have this machine that was dual booted with XP and Win 7. Everything was working gravy. I put up the RC on the machine and now I get NTLDR erros when trying to get into XP.
Physical setup is as folows:
Sata Drive with three partitions (XP, Storage, Storage 2)
IDE drive with One partition (Windows 7)
Boot order is Sata, then IDE.
The boot loader comes up and I can get into windows 7 no problem, but when I choose the XP I get NTLDR errors.
I redid the boot loader with easybcd, but I still get the errors, I've copied NTLDR and NTDETECT.com on just about every drive except my card reader (haha).
Can someone walk me through getting XP booting again? I tried doing the /fix mbr thing but I can't remember the password for the XP install to get into the recovery console.
How To Format PC Without Booting Anything From CD Or USB
Jan 1, 2012I have a Windows XP PC which I want to completely delete everything and throw it in the garbage. Problem is the CD-rom drives do not work and I can't boot from USB (no option in BIOS).... I've already deleted personal files from the computer to the recycle bin and used Eraser to securely delete it. Sep 11, 2009I just finished a new computer for the office. The internals are an MSI x48c platinum, 6gb corsair DDR3, intel Q7200, 1.5TB Barracuda and a Geforce 9400GT.
The day after I installed the 7100 RC, the computer would lock up on startup and I would have to restart, but i had to put it through windows repair before it would restart and come back up. When its up, I can restart all I want. But when I shut down, it hangs up on startup again. I tried to keep it in hibernation, but it doesnt come out of hibernation, and sleep doesnt work at all.
I have tried system restores to the very beginning, and it just comes back. I am thinking that it is some hardware doing it if its not a faulty install, but I have updated all the drivers, and even the bios. The log has VSS errors, kernal-power 41, avg (have since uninstalled it), and search errors.
any suggestions?
