Windows 7 "update" Killed Blu-ray Playback On Acer Notebook
Jul 17, 2011When I was running Vista Ultimate x32 on my Acer Aspire 7720-6395 notebook, the Blu-ray playback ran fine. However, as soon as I "upgraded" to Windows 7 Ultimate, the Acer Blu-ray playback software running under Acer Arcade Deluxe was disabled.I ran the Windows 7 upgrade advisor before I paid the $184 to Amazon.com for the "upgrade" to Windows 7 Ultimate, and nothing in the upgrade report indicated that Windows 7 would do anything adverse to my Acer 7720 notebook, much less kill Blu-ray playback. the Acer OEM Optiarc BC5500A Blu-ray optical drive checks out as fully functional, with up to date driver, and will play DVDs and music CDs fine under Windows Media Center. Unfortunately, Windows Media Center emulates Apple in not playing Blu-ray disks. I perform Windows updates regularly, as well as run Norton Internet Security, so I don't think that the killing of Blu-ray playback is an update or security problem.
When I inquired of Microsoft and Acer, Microsoft suggested that I address my problems with the Microsoft 7 "upgrade" killing Blu-ray playback to Acer, the manufacturer of my notebook, and Acer responded that my Acer 7720 notebook is out of warranty, so it's not their problem either.So, I did a trial of a commercial Blu-ray add-on software, Cyberlink PowerDVD 11, but that did not work because PowerDVD 11 is apparently not as efficient as the Acer Blu-ray playback software under Acer Arcade Deluxe is, or was, before the "upgrade" to Windows 7 killed it. Cyberlink PowerDVD 11 apparently requires a more powerful CPU than the T5250 Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and/or a more powerful GPU than the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS GPU that came with the Acer 7720-6395 notebook.
Hence, it seems like the only options that the Windows 7 Ultimate "upgrade" gives me, after having invested $184 in it, are:
1. Throw away the investment in the Windows 7 "upgrade" and my notebook, and buy a new notebook;
2. Ask Microsoft for a refund on my Windows 7 Ultimate "upgrade" and try and reinstall and run Vista again;
3. Wait for Acer and Microsoft to work out the problems with the Acer Blu-ray playback software operating under Windows 7 (it seems that neither Microsoft nor Acer is interested in doing that, however);
4. Wait for Microsoft to include Blu-ray playback in the Windows Media Center (I can't imagine why they haven't done this already); or
5. Upgrade the CPU and/or GPU hardware on my Acer 7720-6395 notebook to components that would allow me to run PowerDVD 11.
After Update, Laptop Reverted From Windows 7 To Vista?
Jul 22, 2012I recently purchased an Acer Aspire for the business & I was very specific at time of purchase that it must NOT run Vista as the accounting software I run is not compatible with Vista.
All went well for about a month & then the accounting software started to play up. I contacted their tech support people & they talked me through a few fixes however during these fixes we discovered latent COMPATIBILITY FOLDERS on the computer that simply should not be on a machine unless it is running Vista. I contacted the store I bought it from & they admitted that it had originally come with Vista but had been upgraded to run Windows 7 Home Premium prior to purchase. He told me to come in & they would remove the components that had not been removed properly during upgrade.
I was unable to go in that day but told them to expect me within a day or two at the most however before I could get back (the following night in fact) the computer ran some scheduled updates from Microsoft & when I went to use it the next day it was all sorts of wrong! It didn't even look the same (desktop) & files were missing or moved. When I went to online help I kept getting diverted to Vista help rather than Windows 7 help. I contacted the computer store again & they said that the update may have found these compatibility folders & freaked out & reverted the machine back to Vista.??
Anyway, I have lost loads of files that I had not yet backed up as I was planning to do this immediately prior to taking the laptop back to the shop so I had everything backed up & my accounting software won't work. The shop said they can restore Windows 7 but probably can't restore any lost data as they are only retail...
2. Is my data lost forever or can it be restored by a computer repair technician?

Oct 11, 2010Intel DP55WB mobo with Intel i5 750 CPU. I tried to upgrade from Vista Hme Premium to Win 7 Pro using Win 7 Pro Upgrade disc; received an error msg saying that upgrade procedure was not allowed. I fell back to upgrading using a Win 7 Home Premium disc. Because the Win 7 Pro upgrade disc cost more than the Win 7 Hme Prem upgrade disc, I do not understand MS's refusal to allow this upgrade to a more costly product. I know I may pay an additional fee to upgrade from Win 7 Home Prem to Win 7 Pro; and/or use the Win 7 Pro upgrade disc to achieve the same step-up, but that burns two Win 7 upgrade Keys to upgrade one machine.

However, the process dies here and the progress bar across the bottom of the screen never moves, even after an hour. Reformatted the partition and started over with same results. Multiple attempts always die after the first boot.

Like a dolt, I installed Wondows 7 before I remembered it was an upgrade edition. It's aggravating to have legitimate software and not be able to use it without needing to trick the system - surely there is a way to not have to start all over?
Windows Update Error / Not Search Or Update / Install Critical Items
Jan 30, 2011I'm out of ideas. I've been running Win 7 on this machine for more than a year without issues in updating etc. Now it will not search or update/install critical items. I'm running Symantec (even tried turning the firewall off without any success). I get an error code 80072F7C. When I run hijackthis, I get an error message that my system denied write access to the Hosts file. I proceed with the scan but am unable to produce a log file. I've included a screenshot from the windows update error as well as the error I get when trying to run hijack this.

After installing it, whenever my laptop tries to use the Nvidia card, I get a blue screen and the system restarts. I looked in installed updates to uninstall it, and it is not there. I did a system restore to four days before I installed it, and I still get the same effect. Lastly, I installed some older nvidia drivers that used to work using the clean install option, and I still have this problem.
Unable To Update Using Windows 7 Update (Code 8000FFFF Error)?
Oct 30, 2012A while back, after successfully downloading and installing some updates in the Windows Update, it prompted me to restart the computer to finish the update installation process. However, I continued to use the computer for quite some time before restarting it, and then when it tried to configure the updates on the start-up screen, it showed that it was not successful in doing so. In the past, I noticed that this would typically happen when I did not restart the computer immediately (or within a short time) after the updates finished and I got the prompt to restart. I would have to go to Windows Update and do it over again, and then upon immediate restart, it would always work properly. But this time, it did not, and I keep getting the 8000FFFF error message instead.
Also, now, every time I start the computer, it shows that it's "Preparing to configure Windows... Do not shut off computer" (presumably the updates that never got completely and correctly configured) in the start-up screen... gets to 35%..fails... shuts down (screen goes black)... restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, shuts down and restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, and finally it apparently gives up and says "reverting changes" and finally goes to the desktop.I've looked at the answers in several threads at the answers.microsoft.com forum that were started by people with similar problems, and also tried several of the Microsoft "FixIt" files on the Microsoft site, but none of them worked. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Sep 11, 2012Got a notebook with Windows 7 on it and all of a sudden it's started not booting up, I've tried running the operating system recovery, memory diagnostix and the various tools presented to me to try and fix the issue with no luck. It just sits at the black screen with the yellow bar running across the bottom and never boots up. Also tried safe mode but it just stops after loading disk.sys.Only way I can get on is if I reinstall Windows, first format all the drives then reinstall it - it works fine (boots up) but as soon as I shut down I can't get back on and I'm back to square one.Also tried an older operating system with no luck (it was running 7 for months before this issue).

Sep 14, 2012installing Win 7 x64 from a bootable USB I made with WinToFlash on a Asus X401A.I know the stick is bootable because it loads windows files but after I chose language and keyboard and press install it says: "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now."I know this is a known problem but I have tried all the solution I could find, Change from USB port 3.0 to 2.0, use Ultra Iso to write Win images to stick (Win 7 32,64, Vista 32,64) but to no avail.
Note: last night when I used WinToFlash for the first time to transfer Win to the stick, instead of copying the files manually after I format the stick, I managed to install Windows but the USB ports didn't work at all, I tried 3 different sticks and nothing and I didn't have any drivers on the HDD and with no way to transfer anything on the notebook I fuleshly decided to reinstall Windows but I ran into the same "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing" error.On top of all of that the previous installation of windows wont boot, it says " windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause" and Repair your computer from the stick doesn't work.
