Windows 7 has this neat feature where I can navigate into a compressed (zip) file from Windows Explorer. The icon appears like a folder with a zipper through it & I can just navitage.I can't edit a file in the zip folder directly. I have to first copy it out of the zip, edit it, then copy back into the zip. What am I missing here? If I can overwrite a file why not just allow me to edit it?
I am trying to zip a folder. I know that there is supposed to be an option where you right click send to and send the file to a zip or compressed folder. I can do this on my computer at work. However that option is not coming up on my home laptop.
Today when I loaded windows 7 I clicked on my account and after a slight delay a message appeared "preparing your desktop". When it appeared it was a new desktop and a message on the task bar stated "you can not access you files and folders". I have followed a few steps about unlocking locked accounts but my account wasn't locked. A few other things have been happening over the last week so I am worried I might have a virus.
I have my mbp for 9 months, snow leopard should find automatically every pc on the network but It never found my home desktop everytime, only some times.
but I could easily connect to it using automount maker or in finder with go -> connect to server. I haven't change anything (at least as far as i know) and now my mac can't find or connect to my Windows 7 desktop...!
my desktop see's my mac on the network and can connect to its shared folders but my mac can't see the desktop. my other laptops at home runing windows xp and ubuntu can see the desktop too, so i don't know what is wrong! workgroup is the same.
this is definitely a problem from my desktop as my mac can connect to other pcs too.
i have files and folders in my external hard drive- transcend 320 GB. but now it is almost full with the documents. i want to delete some folders and file but it is not possible to delete. How to delete my documents in my transcend external hard drive?
I am not able to copy files and folders to external hard drive or flash drive. I get the message 'you need permission" etc. But on the same laptop, in vista
I installed an old game R6Vegas2 to c:/games instead of the protected program files (default install location) the game it's self works fine, but it's a mod for this game that uses bat files, teknor6vegas2.exe which then injects it's code into the games .exe so I need to be able to edit the bat file and run it. So far all that happens is the dos cmd window opens and closes within2 seconds nothing else things that I have tried, disabled uac, taken ownership /full control copied a shortcut to the desktop (.bat file) and changed to run as admin all made no difference at all, in win xp it works without all this faffing around
Linksys/T-Mobile Hot Spot (wireless) ROUTER with Ethernet connections to 1) Home Phone, 2) iMAC PowerPC/OS X Leopard, 3) PC/Windows 7 32bit and 4) IOMEGA HOME MEDIA NETWORK HARD DRIVE (herein "NHD").
PERTINENT SYSTEM STATUS:The NHD contains 1) a "BACKUPS" folder with sub-folders containing scheduled & unscheduled backups and system images from both computers and 2) specific folders e.g. MOVIES.
THE PROBLEM:Upon attempting to open the "BACKUPS" folder on the NHD from the PC, a WINDOWS SECURITY panel opens 1) requesting a user name and NETWORK password to the NHD, 2) listing the PC name as a DOMAIN name and 3) a red "X" - Access Denied.
CONFLICTS & FACTS:1) As User/Administrator, I have not set any "folder" security/passwords, 2) I can open, view, edit and delete any of the other folders on the NHD from the PC and can open, view, edit, delete ALL folders from the iMAC 3) I have NO domain setup, only a WORK GROUP name, 4) Network access protection is OFF.
UPON SELECTING "BACKUPS" FOLDER PROPERTIES ON PC: General Tab: ♦File Type > Share Network Tab: ♦Computer Name > the NHD ?? ♦Computer Type > Windows NT 4.9 Server ?? ♦Work Group > "WORKGROUP" (Control Panel System Info shows true Name) Security Tab: ♦Object Name > \Iomega-....Backups "You do not have permission to view or edit this object's permission settings." Previous Versions Tab: None
I have been wondering for a while, what if theres a game and i want to edit it's dll files or exe files? theres a game called amnesia and i want to add a extra button on the game's launcher, but i do not know how, i managed to download a couple programs that can do things like take the exe appart, or read some dll files but not with much success, if i take appart the exe i get 3 files, .text, .data, .rdata, and a folder called .rsrc with icons of the exe in it, i see the icons, sadly i havent found any way of opening the text or data files, the dll files ive managed to open, read and edit save, but then it doesn't change anything or if i modify the exe code it saves but then doesn't launch
i have some pdf document, and i want to delete some pages from it and want to make fonts of text smaller.it has 190 pages and i want to make text smaller so it could fit around 100 pages.
i use BitLord to download random stuff anyways the Downloads Folder Shows up like this : Now when i open Nero up it shows this Weird thing is if i hover over the folder from normal window it says the Downloads folder is only 800mb (as it is only showing me one item) yet from Nero it says the folder is over 9 Gigs. Im set as Owner of the folder and i have all permissions set for me however i am still unable to see these files outside of nero and i don't know why. When i go and try to change the permissions on the folders (the locked ones) windows says the files/folders doesn't exist...
i've notices windows 7 add all sort of new meta data for it's video files.which is cool, but for some reason i cant edit those details. they seems to be locked. How can i Edit video details??
my OS is windows 7 sp1 x64, and I have the following problem:
I wanted to edit an XML file in the folder C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingMozillaFirefoxProfilesdefaultsearchplugins
While I can edit the file, firefox will not recognize the changes that I made to the file. I tried to start my editor with administrative privileges, but this didn't help. I had the same problem before, with a file that was located in the programs folder. I was able to change it, but the program didn't recognize the changes.
I would like to edit the cover art of video files (especially WMV files). How can I do that? Are there any good editors that can edit the "icon image" of a video file?
Recently my music files [it might be with other types of files too, I haven't checked] have somehow changed the security setting so that I can't do anything with them, I can't edit the info in iTunes and I can't delete the files. About the only thing I can do is move the file. I have figured out how to fix this problem one by one with each file (going into properties, security tab, and changing the permissions), however, I've only been able to do this one by one and with each new file the same problem persists. Is there any way I can change some sort of setting or something that allows me to have full control over all files? I am the sole user of the computer, therefore I am the administrator.
I can't save anything. All my word files are read only.

this may be similar to some of the problems already mentioned but: we are editing images as we have done thousands of times before but today for some reason when we hit it he apply button the image file disappears. We can restore the file but everytime today we try to edit the properties of the file
I got a new laptop but it has windows 7. 1 of the extremely huge problems this operating system has is this absurd thing where you cant arrange your own files in the order that you want.Im not gna waste my time ranting on here as it wont make any difference, but it does astound me that microsoft would employ such thickos who were unable to create an OS that was capable of offering such a basic function! i followed the (this) registry-edit steps lastnight to enable free-positioning of my files (unawave. de/windows-7-tipps/disable-sorting-auto-arrange.html?lang=EN).I did it lastnight and it worked perfectly!I then turned my laptop off as it needed to install its daily updates, but when i restarted it i can no longer move my files around in my pictures/videos/or my music folders!Photo/video files in other folders can still be moved around freely, however as all my pictures and videos are saved by default into those 2 folders this causes me a huge problem!
i am enraged, i have been having this problem for a bit, i disabled uac, i gave my user account full access permissions on all files and it still says i dont have permission, my hard drive is almost full now and i cannot delete stuff so i just wanna lay into microsoft with the force of 1000 suns
note: the files i am having problems with arent even on the C: drive, they are on my shared partition (i use this partition for documents music etc and just about everything that is not windows only)
I recently obtained a number of large video files. They have several different file types (file extensions). Among those types are:
.AVI .MKV .MPG .MPE .MP4 .WMV
There are other types as well.I'd very much like to perform some simple editing on these files. The most common editing operation is to extract or "split" a large file into several smaller component files. In other words, each of thse large files contain several small files - all strung together. For example, there may be 4 or 5 video clips in each file. Instead of creating one file for each "clip", the person who created these files just concatenated them all together in one file. So, I'd like to "split" each of these clips out of the single file and create a number of separate files - one for each clip.In addition, I would very much like to be able to convert files of one type to another type.I don't know a lot about the attributes of the various file types. I've read about them in Wikipedia and so I know a lttle about the reasons these file types were created and what the various differences are among them. The main reason that I'd like to convert most of these files to a single file type is that I consider it kind of sloppy to leave these files in there original file types.I have used the app Irfanview in the past to perform similar conversions on "still" files such as .JPEG or .GIF files.
1) How easy or difficult is it to convert video files from one type to another?
2) Should I expect to find one app that can do both editing and conversions? Or should I expect to get several different apps - some to convert files and some to edit files?
I have two folders on an external drive both of which are empty. When I try to delete them, it says they are no longer located on this drive...try again. How can I remove these empty folders?
I've got a directory that contains several empty folders that I'd like to delete. When I attempt to delete the folders I get the error 'Could not find this item. This is no longer located in.' I'd ignore this problem, but some software I've got throws up an error when it scans the directory, and finds these 'phantom' folders.
There are certain folders in my hdd that I am unable to delete. When i click on delete I get the deleting window and it keeps showing deleting for hours together. I tried to delete it using dos commands but it was useless. Incidentally all these flders were in my torrent download location. I have a windows 7 enterprise x86 os. Do I need to post more information?
I am usubg Windows 7 home basic.I am trying to copy some folders from my pen drive to desktop.I have some problems while doing this task.1.It ask permission each time while copying the folder.( What settign have to made so it should not ask.)2.from recent time I unbale to see folders of pendrive. If I search by folder name in that pendrive then it shows but,I open pendrive normally it doesnt shows folders ( just shows the file. )Now same problem occurs while I am opning that pend drive on another machine where I have installed XP. It doesnt shows the folders too. What shoud I do?
I'm really hoping I find an answer to this question besides the one I've found on the internet a hundred times over (That's not a good idea, you shouldn't do it).
My question is: Is there a way to allow a user to create/edit files in the C drive (system drive), and in the Program Files contained there? Let's assume that this user is not only a local admin, but a domain admin as well.
The reason for this is I work for a company that does a lot of editing within these areas of Windows. We need to be able to create and edit files where they are stored. I know one way around we've found is to copy the item out of the folder, edit it, and put it back, but this is a pain in the butt.
I also know that most program need to "run as admin", so that's not the problem either. I've given this user every right and permission in the Security tab of the C drive, and had it propagate down through all files, folders, and sub-folders, and still I'm hit with an error that says "Access is Denied" or another one saying that I don't have the right privileges.
Please, if anyone knows how to change this in 7 it would be much appreciated. I know that this worked in XP, and I'm not looking for someone to tell me "this is a bad idea so don't do it", or "maybe it didn't work right in XP". I have seen enough of these.
UPDATE: I have been playing around with saving office and wordpad documents into the C drive, and into the Program files. It seems that I'm able to do both now (for some odd reason), but I still receive intermittent errors when trying to edit or copy/paste or cut/paste from one location to another.
