Aug 5, 2011I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate. I've been using it for some time without problems, but this morning I was unable to get on the Internet. Yesterday I'd installed an update for ZoneAlarm which I thought was probably the problem, so I uninstalled in and downloaded and installed PC Tools Firewall Plus instead. no my computer will connect to the Internet OK, but whenever I try to open most programs, I get the following error:"The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application."The only two exceptions I've found are Microsoft Security Essentials and Internet Explorer which both work fine.

I clicked ok but the error message box keeps returning back.If i remember properly, this happened when I tried installing some wallpaper.system seems to be working finw with all applications, but this message box is quite annoying.

Aug 16, 2011I have a problem that occurs only during shut down only. When I select Shut Down I soon get a pop up that says....the application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142) Click OK to close the application. the label on the window is cmd.exe. Whether I click on the window or not, the shut down proceeds and eventually after say 30 seconds the alert disapears and the laptop shuts down. clicking on the alert simply brings up another alert. All this only occurs during shut down only. Also, I have no problem running cmd.exe during normal operation, or any other program run from the command window. I have read a number of posts but do not see anything exactly like this, that is happening during shut down.

Aug 15, 2010I tried to replace 3 files in the system 32 folder, and must have made a mistake along the way leaving my laptop inaccessible once logged on. The three files were:

themeservice.dll
I received these error messaged when logged on:dwm.exe - Application error the application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click ok to close the application.explorer.exe - Application error the application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click ok to close the application.Can system restore revert back the files so it was like i never attempted the patch?

Jan 6, 2012The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142) Click on OK to terminate the application.The only option is to click ok. I am deathly afraid to turn off my computer because my brother recently did and that caused it to freeze at the blue HP startup screen, but thats another thread. I get this error whenever I launch anything. I can't even open up the task manager. I really need help. I don't currently have a way to back up my stuff either but I am working on it. By the way, I don't know that my brother was having the same error message as i was or if he was having any error messages. I use zone alarm full security suite if that helps at all, I don't know if it deleted a registry file or something.

I am able to use safe mode fine (which I'm using now) and have tried doing numerous scans and fixes such as SFC-Scannow, Norton Antivirus and System Restore but each one cannot find any threats. Close to the time this started happening, I turned off my laptop by the power switch instead of using the "Start" menu as it was taking ages to switch off.

Feb 2, 2012I've been googling and browsing forums for the last several hours and have not found my exact error. The only time I'm getting the error svchost.exe unable to start error 0xc0000142 error is when I'm trying to shutdown and reboot. Windows 7 will force a restart, and after a while will eventually close the error window (x'ing out of it does not work, nor does clicking ok), and reboot, and all seems fine otherwise, but it's beginning to really bug me. I've tried just about all the fixes suggested, and have cleaned and recleaned my registry and run other diagnostics, and everything looks okay.
