View 2 RepliesI have a Windows 8 laptop. Earlier today I uninstalled AVG free. I declined to restart, deciding I'd restart later. I then installed Avast Antivirus - and when I tried to run Avast, everything froze, and I had to turn the laptop off. When I logged back in to windows, I'm met just the mouse on a black screen. If I log into safe mode, there's the outline of my desktop, and I can run some programs, but most files are inaccessible & I can't get online, the windows taskbar won't open etc, and after a while a blue screen with text appears and the computer restarts.I can't think of any cause other than the antivirus installation. My question is, can you think of any way to undo this without just wiping the computer? I've managed to burn some personal files to a DVD but would still prefer not to go back to square one.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAs I shutdown/restart my laptop, I notice it switches to a secondary desktop that has been running programs.A good example would be trying to open my Task Manager, I can Ctrl-Alt-Del and it will allow me to open Task Manager - however when I click on Task Manager, it opens on the Desktop running in the background. I can't even access the Desktop in the background, it only shows up as I'm shutting down - closing programs that I tried opening awhile ago.

Nothing I do has any effect. According to the Task Manager Backup is not running. Rebooting doesnt help. I am running Win 7 Ultimate (64) on an ASUS computer, 8 Gb ram, AMD Athlon II X2 2.80 GHz processor. This is not the first time I have been backing up to this external drive for about 6 months and I have had no problems.

I am trying to setup a Win7 Pro PC backup so that the primary user does not have any admin rights. Setup Standard user login and then another separate login for file backups.
Created a new login called Backup1, and assigned this User Account to the Backup Operators Group, and Users Group. Rebooted, and logged in as Backup1. Attempted to run Backup.
I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that keeps giving me a message stating "The following programs are still running...." My issue is the list of programs is empty. So, if nothing is running why am I getting this message?I just need to figure out how to get my computer to shut down without having to go through all the annoyance of having to keep sitting at my computer once I tell it to shut down.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am Every time I need to redo my system, I totally reformat my hard drive, re-install the OS and then re-install all my software. Maybe this is the only way to do it but is there a way to re-install my OS (Win 7 Pro) and not have to reinstall the software? In other words, I guess I am talking about a partition for the OS and the rest for the software? If this is possible, then by only installing the OS, how will my programs show back up? Maybe I am not getting the picture but someone told me this can be done, thus saving me much time.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI know how to clone my entire system by going to Control Panel, Backup and Restore, and Create a System Image, but this ostensibly creates a duplicate of OS state, and the entire drive, data and all (for me around 500 GB).I also know how to just backup data alone, but what I don't know how to do is backup just the OS and all installations (separate from raw, individual data and media files), so in the event of disk failure, I can simply reload the old system and programs (but not media files).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to be able to restart Windows, by choice, either without startup programs running, or with startup programs running. The reason is that I have an old (~2001) Palm m105 PDA handheld that updates using Palm HotSync Manager via a USB/serial port cradle (Serial Port 6). It works very well and I don't have a need to replace it with something more up to date, but the problem is, when I try to run the hotsync while other programs are running, I get a Windows BSOD at some point before the hotsync finishes, I have to reboot every time, and the hotsync never finishes. However, I find that if I shut down almost every optional running program before running the hotsync, then I can run the hotsync to completion without the BSOD happening. As a workaround, to simplify things, I figure that when I'm ready to run the hotsync, if I reboot Windows to a state where no applications are running, I can run the hotsync and then reboot Windows back to its normal startup state, with all the normal startup programs running. This all seems very labor and time intensive regardless of how I do it.One way I thought of doing this more cleanly (though probably not saving any time) is to create another user account, with no startup programs, and run the hotsync from there, and switch between the two.
View 14 Replies View RelatedSo I downloaded a bunch of wallpapers to get a nice shuffle going on. Went into personalization and checked everything I wanted to get shown in the shuffle and saved it as its own theme.
The problem is that after I run programs (games, mostly - usually L4D, but just five minutes ago, Oblivion as well) the theme will have somehow switched to a new, unsaved and modified theme that is just fixed on whatever background I had up before running the program.
It's really just a minor annoyance, as I I just have to right click->personalize and select my saved theme again, but still - anyone know why it would be messing with my shuffle custom theme?
I'm looking for a way to keep my computer from sleep when I have certain programs from running.I'm most likely looking for an application that runs in the background with a list of some sort, and if a program on that list is open, the computer will not sleep after the "1 hour" of inactive mouse use, that I have set in power options.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running 64-bit Windows 7. Last night my computer was fine, and I just booted up today to find that whenever I run programs, they don't show up on the taskbar. I have two monitors, one is my laptops screen and the other an external one. If I drag the applications to my laptop screen, they show up on the external screen, but if they are on the external screen, they don't show up at all.
The external is set to my main display.
Any ideas on what's going on?
I have a computer based training program that is designed to run on older Windows versions. The last version that I had it working on was XP. I took the laptop apart and noticed the fan wasn't working so I ordered a new one and installed it. Now the fans working great and the computer runs, however, the processor seems to be idling high. It seems to constantly increase processor usage even when no programs are running and back again to a base line in a constant pattern as can be seen from the attached cpu usage chart. I have disabled pretty much everything from starting on windows start up and have scanned for viruses and defragged my disk but to no avail. My laptop has a core i3 processor.

Aside from the surge itself, what other negative effects could arise from experiencing an outage while multiple programs are open and running? For example, if I lost power while regedit was open, could it change or possibly cause damage the registry itself? The machine in question is currently running Win 7 SP1 64-bit.
