Running Laptop Without Battery Reduces Chances Of Overheating?

Apr 14, 2011

Ever since I bought a new laptop, people kept telling me to take off the laptop battery once in a while and let it run solely on the charger/cable. They say that this could reduce the chances of overheating and could maintain a longer battery life. However, there have been others who say that it's actually bad to do so. Is it best to keep the laptop running with battery or not?

Plugged In But Running Off Battery

Dec 30, 2012

Every 10 seconds or so, Windows will think my charger is unplugged. Then, it will proceed to switch back and fourth between plugged in and not, forcing my laptop to switch between power modes. (I'm guessing this is stress on the CPU and I do not want it to have to do that all the time)It's getting annoying having to deal with my laptop getting hot and such because of the switching power modes.

CPU Usage Is Below 40%, But Laptop's CPU Is Hot Or Maybe Overheating?

Dec 23, 2012

specs: core i7, windows 7, 6 gb ram? Before, my laptop can last for 4+ hours with 100% battery. But now, it can only last for about 1 and a half hour with full battery.I'm pretty sure that the battery isn't the problem because when i start up my laptop, the battery displays "100% available 4 hours and 20 mins."Then suddenly, 2 mins after starting up, my laptop's fan is spinning too fast that i can hear it 2 feet away. And, not only spinning too fast, but also releases hot air.and BTW, even I'm not running at least 1 program, and my CPU usage is 30% or less ... the CPU or fan is hot.. and that's the problem.

Overheating Laptop, GPU Temps At 130C

Jan 6, 2012

Alight, so my ASUS G60JX has an overheating problem. A bad overheating problem. I created another thread a while back, but do to me getting busy( and ultimately forgetting about it) I marked it as solved.

Recently, I purchased Need For Speed: The Run (Limited Edition). It uses Frostbite 2, which is the same graphics engine as FIFA 2012, Battlefield 3, and some others . The requirements said that the game should work on my computer. It called for a 3.0GHz Core 2 Duo and a NVIDIA 8800 GT (a 512MB card). My specs being an i5 430M clocking at 2.66 GHz (dual core, quad threading), and a NVIDIA GTS 360M (a 1GB card), it SHOULD work.

However, after playing for about 2 minutes, the frame rate dropped to about 3FPS. I flipped over to HWmoniter, to find that my GPU was stressing out at about 125C, and my CPU at about 100C. My RAM wasn't maxing out, the CPU was at 70%, and the GPU was also at about 70%. So basically, I pretty ticked off that I spend $40 on a game that should have worked, only to find that it's destroying my GPU.

I tried cleaning out my heatsinks/fan, using a laptop pad, using a laptop cooling pad, and using a huge 25" vornado industrial fan. Placing the laptop directly on top of the vornado was the only thing that worked. The Vornado tactic kept everything running at full FPS, while pumping 1366x768 through a 36", and the temps never went beyond 64C. Obviously, it is not optimal to have my laptop in the middle of the room listening to that huge fan scream. It's loud. Like really loud.

I have come to the final conclusion that I'm 100% fed up with this. I have an idea of putting a small desktop GPU fan inside my case to replace the stock fan, along with some more heatsinks. Here is the fan I was thinking of using: Newegg.com - EVERCOOL VC-RF Ever Lubricate VGA Cooler

Laptop GPU Overheating GPU Fan Speed Inconsistent?

Jan 15, 2013

Haven't had a problem with my laptop in a long time, but having an issue. Specs in "My specs"My computer was getting real sluggish and I realized it was quite hot.Usually, my laptop blows out hot air as it is a gaming laptop, but it doesn't seem to be doing that. I looked in speedfan, and couldn't see any speeds for my computer, but the gpu was hitting 80C. topped out at 82C and I turned it off. Fan was not blowing out air at all...So I took of the bottom panel of the laptop so I could see the fan and the fan was moving every now and then. at 70C, the fan was not even moving and it started heating up again.... the fan didn't turn back on while it heated up to 75C so i turned it off again. The fan is moving slowly when it moves, but it is like it isn't being controlled as it should.

Also tried to blow out dust, took off heatpipes/heatsink and reapplied. I am travelling so I don't have thermal paste, but thermal paste looked good still. I had reapplied thermal paste recently so it still is in good shapeDownloaded MSI Afterburner and it seems the Fan speed is not changeable in there... its up to 75C again Any suggestions on what I can do to check the GPU fan speeds or reset the control for it so it spins back up as it should?

Prevent Program Startups If Running On Battery?

Mar 22, 2011

Is there a way in Windows 7 to have some programs run on startup, and some not based on if you are connected to an outlet or using a battery? For example, when I am running on battery for the day, I want to conserve battery life so it would be convenient to have only the bare essentials startup that are necessary for the laptop to work normally.A couple of years ago, I used a program that delayed startup applications but I am looking for a way to have different options based on battery or outlet use, Like how the Power Options allows a a few different tweaks based on battery or being plugged in.

Overheating Laptop And New Laptop Advice

Jun 27, 2011

just a quick thread about my current laptops cooling problems because it constantly rises to 90C Degrees, when doing the simplest of tasks such as web browsing. I have a cooling stand for it, and it hardly ever is moved because I know how hot it gets - its more like a desktop now. I've heard it is because of a bad heat sink design in the DV6 Series, but was wondering whether replacing the current thermal compound with something such as Arctic Silver would help at all? I am buying a new laptop in the next few months, but I cannot decide on the best laptop to buy. I have been interested in a Dell XPS 15, which has the i3-2310m processor and the Nvidia 525M GPU. I don't playing any FPS games, but do play some browser games (or did play, but I would rather have the option there). Would this be adequate for games like RuneScape and such?

I've noticed that particularly after installing a batch of Windows Updates that require a boot, the screen after boot frequently appears with a significantly lower resolution. Although a normal boot will sometimes reload with the correct resolution, only a cold boot will ensure this.

Laptop Battery Overcharged?

Well I just had the first bsod from my laptop and after the reboot it got stuck -> reboot and select a proper boot drive.I checked the bios and my hard drive was still being recognized. After it I turned the laptop off I took the battery out and I turned on the laptop. The laptop would run normally. Then I ran safe mode and it worked fine and normal mode too. So I'm wondering if it's something wrong with my laptop battery or just really bad luck. I still need to run it again with the battery.

ATI Reduces Support For Older Graphics Cards

Mar 5, 2009

As time goes on and a product catalog grows, it's not unusual for a company to reduce and eventually eliminate support for older products. In the case of ATI, AMD's graphics division, a new decision to reduce support for older graphics chips is about to take effect. To date, ATI has provided a new WHQL certified driver every month to nearly every graphics card capable of DirectX 9 acceleration. That includes cards all the way back to 2002's Radeon 9700 Pro. After this month's Catalyst 9.3 release, that will not be the case.

After Catalyst 9.3, products prior to the R6xx generation of graphics cards (that go by the Radeon HD 2000 series brand names) will be changed to "legacy support status." This means that these products will get quarterly WHQL driver updates, instead of monthly updates. AMD assures us that these products will still receive critical "hotfix" drivers if high-priority fixes are needed.

Laptop Sleep If No Battery But AC Plugged In

Nov 16, 2009

I haven't verified this yet, but I wondered if it's a possible bug?

I bought a Dell XPS M1330 over a year ago and it came preloaded with Vista Home Premium. Since I want to keep the batteries in good condition I run the laptop with no battery connected and AC plugged in whenever it sits on my desk at home.

However, in Windows 7 it seems that Windows wants to put the laptop to sleep after 10-15 minutes if I do this. Since I have various USB devices plugged in, especially external storage, this is a problem. It goes away if I run with the battery plugged in but like I said, not verified yet.

Asus Laptop Battery Won't Charge

May 22, 2011

We have an ASUS K52Jr purchased in April last year. At the start of this year the hard drive packed it in while I was trying to download something on ITunes and it would not start up again. We were moving and so didn't get around to taking it in for a couple of months. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago we went it in to ASUS and the hard drive was replaced under warranty (2-year warranty). The laptop is working fine now on AC power but the battery will not charge. I've tried shutting it down, taking the battery out, restarting it and putting the battery in while it's on, but no dice. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the power management driver from "Device Manager". It was saying "plugged in, charging" on the battery icon but the "power bar" on the icon would stop moving within a few seconds of putting the battery back in and the power level would stay at 0%. Yesterday it started saying "plugged in, not charging".Is this because the battery was left in the laptop while it wasn't working? Is it just coincidental that the problem started after the hard drive was replaced?

Laptop Does Not Recognize Non-OEM Replacement Battery

Jun 17, 2012

The following text is the culmination of information from a failed attempt to get qualified advice via the Yahoo Answers route. This is why the text is not in a strictly narrative form. I thought it best to provide the accumulated data as is:I recently purchased a replacement battery for my Acer laptop (Acer Aspire 7740-5029). The battery is not a "manufacturer" replacement battery, but is of third-party manufacture. When I turn on my laptop (windows 7 HP 64bit), the laptop does not recognize that the [new] battery is inserted, even though the new battery is inserted. The laptop does function with the replacement battery, but it does not report to Windows the remaining charge, or even that the battery is even there. So, this being the case, I have no idea of the charge/time remaining as I use the laptop and is of no use to me because of that fact.

Technical information: *The factory battery (OEM) is a Sanyo AS07B31 (lithium Ion, 4400mAh, 48Wh, 10.8V, 6 cell). *The replacement battery is a Famis FAM18674 (Lithium Ion, 5200mAh, 49Wh, 14.8V, 8 cell)

Additional Details:For anyone who advises that I seek out and download/update drivers for the new battery, I cannot "download the driver", since in the Device Manager does not even recognize the new battery as being there as an unknown device or otherwise. I cannot update or install a driver for device that Windows doesn't know is even there.

Additional Details:One other person has submitted that the original battery that came withthe laptop contained DRM electronics, so that one cannot replace the OEM battery with a non OEM model.

Additional Details The battery status/plugged-in status icon is on the taskbar and is not hidden. I have always had my taskbar set up to show all icons and to hide none of them. With the laptop not plugged into the AC and the new battery in place, the only icon that is showing is the "no battery detected" icon. Even though the laptop is drawing power from the battery, Windows does not "see" that there is a battery and therefore cannot provide battery usage/time remaining, etc.

Why Is Laptop Detecting Battery As A Charger

Oct 10, 2012

Windows 7 ACPI Doesn't Detect Battery But Battery Is Working?

I have an ASUS K50IE laptop that i had for 2 years now. been working fine until 2 days ago.this problem has been bugging me for the last 2 days. here's why.my laptop suddenly didn't detect my battery. thought it was because my battery was dead. I searched the net on things to do before "throwing in the towel" on my battery and today i came across a blog where the instruction was to uninstall the Microsoft ACPI compliant control method battery driver. I did just that and my battery suddenly worked! well sort of. now here's where it gets all weird.every time i open my laptop i do the following:1. plug in AC to laptop.. turn on laptop.3. unplug AC.3. laptop runs on battery.4. log on to windows.5. battery icon shows up as an empty charging icon then shows the "Battery is not detected" icon again.please take note that my laptop is still ON and WORKING. so this means (MAYBE?) that my battery is working.
