View 2 Repliesi downloaded a video file and when I checked the folder it was downloaded to it was not there. I then used windows explorer to locate the file and it found it. However, I got this error message "this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shorcut will no longer work properly."
View 8 Replies View RelatedI think I may have screwed up royally with my still-new computer. Essentially, my problem is two-fold:
1) The shortcut icons on my desktop no longer work. I'm pretty sure I deleted the files from my computer (I'll explain in a little bit). Ex: I try to click on Mozilla, and nothing happens. If I attempt to send the same icon to the Recycle Bin, it will tell me that the file no longer exists. It says: "This is no longer located in "C: UsersKevinDesktop"
2) I am no longer able to access my Gmail. I no, I know that isn't a Windows 7 thing, but let me explain. When I go to Google in Internet Explorer and click on Gmail, I get a message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click on the "Diagnose Connection Problems" button, a box that says "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting" appears.
So those are essentially my issues. Essentially, everything was working fine before I started messing with my files. Here's the scoop: This is the first computer I've ever had that had a split hard drive (C and D). I noticed that the D drive never had anything saved to it, so I decided that I would move my files that began with the pathway "C: Users" over there. I literally just clicked and dragged that over to the D drive. Then...I noticed stuff was wrong. The issues I mentioned before (shortcuts and GMail) and also that what little music I had on my iTunes was unable to be located.
I realized that it was probably that the shortcut icons, the iTunes songs were looking for files that had been moved...I decided to move them back. So I clicked and dragged the folder in D back over to C. It told me that some of the files already existed in C, and it asked if I wanted to merge them. I said yes. So. Problem still persists. I have figured it out with my iTunes and have got the program to locate everything, but I am still unable to fix the other issues. I can't find those files for the desktop anywhere, and I can't even begin to figure out what to do with the GMail issue, but I feel it has to be linked, right???
All I have a dual boot Win 7 and XP, I want to remove the XP as I no longer use it. Both are active and on seperate discs, can I just format the disc? I have used easy BCD to edit the boot menu so only Windows 7 default yes.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've seen solutions posted all over for removing the desktop icon from appearing in windows 7 when you press alt+tab, but this does not seem to aply the change to the win+tab shortcut.I added a DWORD called 'AltTabSettings' inKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer and set the value to 1, is this supposed to work for both alt+tab and win+tab? If not, anyone know how to do this? It would make win+tab (which is much prettier of an effect than alt+tab) much more effective.

View 0 Replies View RelatedI'm using Win 7 64 bit on a Vaio laptop that's less than a year old. Recently I'm having problems safely removing flash drives, portable drives and other devices. The SRH icon appears in the tray, but nothing happens when you click on it. Trying to eject from My Computer often doesn't work either, as the "eject" option is simply missing from the context menu.I tried an idea I found on the MS forums, of creating a shortcut to the Safely Remove dialog, but that doesn't work either.(Shortcut to: C:WindowsSystem32 undll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll) -- on at least one device, it claims the portable hard drive is not a removable drive.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm using Windows 7 x64 SP1 Pro on a HP Compaq notebook. Since I installed Windows and all those HP apps (some of them apparently required to access BIOS) I got this shortcut on desktop and I cannot remove it. Deleting it manually does not work and the shortcut does not appear in User/Desktop or Public/Desktop folders. Right clicking it does not show the usual menu but this so I cannot get the location of the file. Also, the Remove Icon option does nothing not even in Safe Mode. How to get rid of this? Some suggested to reinstall the app however this also does not work.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently reorganized my computer and this included a fresh install of Windows 7 on a new disk. I backed up all my data on the old disk so that I could make sure I wasn't losing any important documents or whatever.I'm now sure I've got everything off the disk that I needed and am using the disk as a storage disk for media. However, there are still folders that I can't seem to erase in the Program Files, Program Files (x86), and Windows directories. Most of the files are gone but about 12GB of junk remains that I no longer need. Whenever I try to delete what is left, it says I need permission from TrustedInstaller and it won't let me delete these files. Is there any way to blow these directories away without having to format the disk? I really can't format because the disk is almost full with data that I need to keep and I don't really have any other disks to temporarily back these files up to.

View 0 Replies View RelatedI was trying to reduce the amount of times system restore was occurring on my PC, so I accessed System Restore in the 'Task Scheduler' and changed the 'trigger' from daily to monthly, and I changed the date to the 12th of each month and changed the time to 6am too. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but at the time, windows was also installing updates, which were lots of security updates for Microsoft . NET Framework 4 Client Profile. After the updates, and the changes I made in the 'Task Scheduler,' I restarted my computer, and now when I access Task Scheduler, the sign 'The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click refresh.' comes up... But this only comes up once, and then again, when I click on the 'system restore,' file, which now has no information displayed about it, so I can't access it, so obviously something is wrong with this 'system restore,' file in the task scheduler.... I have tried using the system restore option to a previous point, but that just makes things worse, where I can't access 'Task Scheduler and Event Viewer.' So I undid this system restore, and am left with the problem described above, where it says 'The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click refresh
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus 1215n netbook. It came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed. The drive came with the following partitions:
100 GB Windows 7
15 GB Asus Expressgate (a quick-boot minimal OS)
118 GB Empty partition
15 MB (unknown)
I had been using TrueCrypt to encrypt the 100 GB system partition, which required that I enter a password before booting into windows.Other than that I never touched it until now. Today I decided to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate, so after making sure everything I wanted to keep was on the 118 GB partition, I booted into the Windows 7 setup, formatted *only the 100 GB partition* from within the setup, and selected it as the volume to which to install.Upon restarting, the third partition wasn't shown in My Computer. I went to Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management, which shows the following partitions:
100 GB Healthy
15 GB Healthy
118 GB Free space
20 MB Healthy
I've done these exact steps in the past with similar configurations, and have never had this happen to me before. I can only surmise that this is due to having had a TrueCrypt boot manager, but beyond that I am uncertain. how I might be able to recover this partition?

The problem started with my mouse not working well then my keyboard so we replaced them (that was a month ago). Then strange thing started to happen, a ticking sound started to sound every few minutes. Apart from that, the computer seems well and functions properly. Then one day when I tried to turn it on, the screen looks different. I am referring to what I usually see on my screen whenever I turn it on. My pc is running on windows 7 but right now it looks like its on XP. Plus I cannot connect to the internet. The icon is no longer on the systems tray and when I tried to do the following:
System restore
Network troubleshooting
It wont allow me, when I do system restore it will say A volume shadow copy service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the application event log for more information (0x80042302).

I thought if I could find the exe file, I could create a shortcut from there and guessed it`d be in C/Windows/system32 but unless it`s camouflaged, it doesn`t seem to be there.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed a 64bit version of Windows 7 on my computer without removing the old one(32bit). The reason for not removing the old one was that my DVD writer broke so I had to install the 64bit version while still using the 32bit version. I borrowed a friend's memory stick, put the window 7 disc's contents on the USB. I then made it into an image and mounted it. The installation was perfectly fine, got new drivers and all, but when I tried to format(or delete) the C partition on which I have my 32bit windows installed it displayed the following error message http://puu.sh/1YRwa I then stopped the old OS from booting, but I'm stuck here. I still can not format the partition, as it's still a system partition.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat I'd like to do is locate some piece of software on the Internet that would clean all the crap off my computer without specifically having to go through file by file to do it all myself.I could reformat, but then I would have to back up everything I want to keep. It's funny how I can reformat my computer, re-install the stuff I need, and then everything is working spectacularly again. Why is that?I basically want to remove everything that's clogging system resources, remove services that are installed on my computer but are not being used, or not needed, duplicate files that are just taking up system space, invalid, corrupt, duplicate entries within the Registry, etc... But I need to do that without harming my computer.
