Has anyone run across this? Whenever I install a program via the DVD drive or from a mounted ISO the install is painfully slow. The system them responds super slow. This also happens when transferring files from multiple drives. I understand there will be a lag when the hard drive is in use, but this never happened under the same setup in Vista.
View 2 RepliesI've just done a clean install on a blank hard drive of windows 7 ultimate x64. I had this exact version of windows on another hard drive but I did something and now I can't boot into it any more. So I want to transfer all my files and stuff - I can link up and view everything on my old hard drive, it just won't boot - is there any software or any easy way to transfer my program files so that I don't have to reinstall them all? Also, I'm not sure how to transfer all my windows settings - is it just a file somewhere that I copy across? I've had a look at 'windows easy transfer' but it looks like it only works if you can boot into both operating systems - which I can't.

My old computer is an XP home machine but I don't want to give up my software that I have installed on it It is all 32 bit the file system is FAT 32 and I want to transfer it to my new computer's harddrive. I have both computers and an external hard drive large enough to hold the data from the old computer. Of course I don't want to transfer the OS!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a decent machine with a fresh install of Windows 7 32 bit.* Everything seems to working fine, but I notice that, just like with my previous XP system, transferring files from one storage drive to another (even internal to internal) bogs down the entire system quite a bit. This has always been the case, but I was hoping it would be better under Windows 7.I'm talking about moving files from one logical data storage drive to another, without involving the C: drive and OS (directly, at least). Going from an internal drive to an external drive is even worse. The system doesn't slow to a crawl or lock up but I notice a considerable drop off in all the other functions. Is this typical for everyone? It just seems that with hardware improvements in drives and motherboards, this would get better with time.BTW, we're talking about a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P mb with a Core 2 Quad 2.67ghz processor and 4 gb DDR2 ram. Not blazing by any means but respectable for everyday work.

Whenever I am transferring a large number of small files of maybe when I am installing a game, for example, my system starts hiccuping and fulfilling simply tasks such as opening Microsoft Word take a lot longer. The processor usage remains pretty low, and it hardly uses more than 50% of my available memory.I have bought two 1TB Seagate HD's two days ago and mounted them under RAID0, for I was considering the problem was a faulty HD. The performance of the RAID is where it should be according to HT TACH, but today after installing Armed Assault 2 the same problem happened again.My system is overclocked to 3.7GHz, and I've tried running everything under vanilla BIOS configuration and the problem still persisted
View 5 Replies View RelatedIt was all fine until yesterday. I copied over a game from my laptop the night before (I just installed 7 on this computer recently, was copying over stuff from my laptop) and also finished installing World of Warcraft and not long after I turned off the computer.
The next day I switched it on and didn't notice anything at first but some programs wouldn't run (Winamp would have a blank space where the music list normally is).
I tried installing some virtual drive programs such as magic disc and power iso which I usually use for isos I rip onto the computer (I lost some discs before so I've been doing that recently) but the magic disc programs wouldn't run properly and power iso wouldn't progress during its installation.
I tried installing some anti spyware like AVG and Avast (Spyware doctor detected 300 odd tracking cookies that appeared in the past week I installed, way more than it did with my vista laptop) but they would just either not respond (and then pop up with a message saying it took a while and wouldn't respond) or just not even progress when it was installing (on the part where it begins putting down files)
Explorer itself is slow and takes a while to load when on "My computer" and usually wouldn't display USB drives. Once it did but it didn't actually open it up when I clicked on it and prevented the window from responding.
I have used task manager to close all these down when they wouldn't.
When I tried switching off my computer it just stayed on the logging off/shutting down screen. I tried leaving it overnight, expecting it to finally switch off but it only ende up going into sleep mode (and popped up with the log in screen when I waked it up)
I have switched the computer off and on a few times but its still the same.
I also got the disc I used to install and tried to repair it but it wouldn't boot from the disc when I switched on the PC and when I opened it up and ran the setup file, it came up with the usual "are you sure you want to run this" dialog and didn't do anything.

I've been using win 7 ultimate (64bit) for almost week now. In that period I had one serious problem repeating 5 times if I'm not mistaken.
Message: "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume Data."
Volume Data is logical drive. Lots of personal data is stored there using WindowsXp. As soon as I installed win 7 and tried to move some data from System partition to Data partition my PC started having these issues. I've run some diagnostic tools that win 7 offers and learned that Dirty Flag bit was raised on logical drive. I've run chkdsk utility along with checking bad sectors and problem was fixed but only for a day. Problem usually arises when I try storing data on that drive. Chkdisk fixes this but on very short period of time. PC is year old and in that period I have never experienced any kind of trouble with HDD.

I have installed Windows 7 on several computers, both laptops and a desktop, and I am having real trouble with extremely slow copying, transferring and deleting files and directories. What used to take minutes in XP, now takes hours, particularly the "preparing to copy" phase.

I can't do an upgrade because I'm upgrading from 32 bit Vista Ultimate to 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate. This means re-installing masses of software and patches and updates. The last time I did this, from XP to Vista, it took weeks to finally complete the process.
I have found this application Laplink PCmover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant that purports to move your existing applications from Vista to 7 on the same PC. The company has a good reputation and for about £10 it doesn't seem bad value (1 migration).
Anyone know anything about it?

I opened up command prompt and ran SFC/ SCANNOW and received a message about corrupt files.
Hard drive in 2009 Satellite P500 series notebook, Windows 7 Home Premium X64, is pre-Advanced Format Drive. The 2008, 500 GB Hard drive failed with SMART warning at every boot. (Pre-Advanced Format Drive) Replace with new 500 GB HDD (AFD) Advanced format. Repair with Toshiba supplied 3 Disc set "Recovery Media Satellite P500 series"... Boot okay, no network, Device Mgr shows 6 yellow exclamation marks, but properties all show "The device is working properly". Download latest drivers and install... no change in symptoms. Scrounge up another 2008 (320 GB) Hard drive, and the Recovery Media installs fine. System boots and everything is working great.Image Backup with three different programs, (PQ Drive Image (GHOST), Acronis, Active@Disk Image)Restore to new 500 GB (AFD) hard drive Continue to configure and customize system, and install all the latest updates. Install again, the new AFD hard drive into computer. Machine seems okay.. Use it for a couple days. Discover that Windows Update does not work. Says service is not running. but it is. I spent most of a day trying to resolve. can't fix it. Download an install a stand-alone fix does not work either.

The main on has windows 7 32 bit installed plus several programs. The new computer will have windows 7 64bit. Is it possible to install the old hard drive and access all the programs and files on it even though it has an operating system on it? Can I just transfer all those programs and files from the old one and reformat it to free space or is there a way to just remove the operation system and still access the the files and programs?

I cannot transfer files to an SDHC mini card when connected to my Windows 7 computer; no problem on my Windows Vista computer. I've tried changing the drive letter because the drive shows "unallocated", but that didn't work. The drive is showing up in My Computer. I get an error message, "Cannot read from source file". I've selected to give administrator options and everything I know to do to no avail.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Desktop running Win 7 Home premium and have recently installed Win 7 Professional on my laptop. I want to transfer the desktop and other settings (MS Office) and files from the desktop to the laptop. The desktop has 2 drives, one with Windows and program files and the other with User Data. My laptop has one drive partitioned with a similar setup, Windows and Programs on the C: partition and User Data on the D: partition. When I try to transfer I get the message the transfer cannot take place because there is not enough room and to delete some files to make room. The problem seems to be that the transfer wizzard is trying to transfer everything from the Desktop to the C: drive of the laptop, rather than C: to C: and D: to D:. Is there a way around this ? I have tried to map the drives but it won�t let me do that!
Secondly, if I only try to transfer fewer files, I am told the Desktop is not connected to the domain, but I have not set up a domain and when I try on the desktop, the option is greyed out.

View 2 Replies View RelatedEvery time I start up normally into Win7 everything is fine for a couple of minutes. I'll open a few programs, then after a few minutes of them running they'll hang and enter the 'not responding' mode. (firefox, steam, IE). If I don't already have task manager running the system will basically be unresponsive and the only thing I can do is reboot manually. If I have task manager running I can sometimes end a process or two but some will remain open & unresponsive. Any programs that are working (including task manager) disappear when I minimize them and no programs appear on the task bar, (though they can be retrieved with alt+tab).
McAfee also has 'real time scanning' permanently disabled.
This is all very strange as there was nothing wrong four days ago when I was away, and the symptoms occured within 2-3 minutes of booting up this evening. The system runs in safe mode.
I have a friend with a mac laptop that I need to transfer roughly ~110 GB from. I have a laptop that dual boots Windows 7 and Kubuntu 12.10. Does anyone know the quickest and easiest way to directly transfer these files between our computers? Neither of us has a large enough external hard drive.

Slow meaning that to open the web browser it struggles and while typing search terms in google there is lag. That's just one example, other's being opening programs.Last night I reformatted my computer because I thought maybe it had something to do with it. But no luck because after the clean install was complete I transferred about 600gb back on the computer and during this process tried to view the properties xpadder (Right click-> Properties) and the entire system froze. A hard reset and I started the process all over again, tried watching tv using windows media center and it worked but flipping through channels was extremely slow and it is not usually.

When I copy an file from External Hard Drive to my SSD, there is no lag/freeze. But the speed is slower. When I copy an file from SSD to External Hard Drive, the speed goes up to around 200MB/Sec, freeze/lag, then continues and sometimes the speeds drops, and then continue, and then lag/freeze, and then drops. Always around the 5-10 second mark, the status bar freezes and finishes it off.I tried copying the same 4.86GB file to the External Hard Drive (WD 500GB My Passport and Hitachi 500GB HDD with Enclosure, both USB3.0) to another laptop with USB3.0 and there is no lag/freeze, but the speed is slower..
I run an ACER Aspire X3950 with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I purchased a "RAYGO eXtreme Hard Drive enclosure (SATA to USB)" and installed within it a 1 Terabite HDD that was working (and can work) flawlessly in a different PC. The HDD is about 85% empty. For no apparent reason, most of the time when I (try to) transfer large files to the external HDD, the latter stops working. However, I've been able to transfer (blocks of) files of more thann 30 Gb without a hitch.
When the external HDD does stops working, Device Manager shows "Unknown device". When it works, Device Manager shows two instances of "USB Mass Storage Device". If I restart the PC, most of the time the external HDD is ignored and not even the "Unknown device" entry appears. The closest thing to a solution I found at "Problems may occur when you try to transfer files to or from a device that is connected to a USB 2.0 hub", where they state:

Currently I am using 80 GB SATA Seagate HDD as my system drive and would like to purchase a bigger drive. In this Seagate HDD I have 2 partitions, C 40 GB and D 40 GB.Suppose I purchase a new drive and make a 200 GB C partition, is there a way to successfully transfer everything including the settings and Windows from the old 40 GB on Seagate to the new 200 GB partition?I'm thinking about Norton Ghost but have never had any experience of using it for this kind of scenario.

Transferring large files takes a long time when you have to copy it to an external HDD and then back again onto another PC so i am hoping that if i get this working it will solve my problem.I have tried multiple things like Homegroups and setting the sharing permissions on files to allow me to access them but neither of these options work, i even followed the guide for the later attempt that is posted in a thread further down on this forum.When it comes to the homegroup i set up the homegroup on my laptop (by following a guide someone wrote on this forum) but when i go to access the hoemgroup on my desktop it does not say that there is a homegroup already on the network to access, and yes both computers are on the same wireless network.When it comes to the sharing permissions i follow the PDF also found on this forum to the letter but when it comes to going onto my desktop, opening the network screen my laptop is just not there.

- then i use my ipad (the device i want to transfer files from my pc to) and connect it to that virtual hotspot
- i use the program Phone Drive on my ipad, it has wifi sharing feature, it gives me the http:// and ftp:// addresses. i know these things, i can either use http:// address in my browser or ftp:// in any ftp clients, then i transfer files easily,
- when i copy files from my ipad, my pc actually downloads the files, not copies the files, likewise when i copy files from my pc to my ipad it actually uploads the files, not copies. and this is why i disable internet access before i create virtual hotspot because i don't want it to use my bandwidth (or data).
- and HERE'S MY QUESTION: does it actually use bandwidth when i upload or download, if it does not, then i wouldn't need to create a virtual hotspot and disable internet, i just need to connect them directly to my real router hotspot and use. and how do i know/how can i check?
the transfer speed is actually very slow, like 2 MB/s, i thought this is normal since when i download files from internet it's about 2 MB/s too, but then i see many people on some websites say their speed is 10MB/s (they say this is slow, i think this is fast), or 80 MB/s, so i wonder why is my speed so low? and this is not a real wifi hotspot, it's virtual, so it should be fast, is there any other software that can make a virtual wifi hotspot that has fast speed? and why are other people's wifi transfer speeds so fast but mine is slow?
