OS On SSD - HDD Used For Programs Storage Keeps Disappearing
Dec 18, 2011
To keep it short I do have an ssd and hdd I'm using the ssd for os only and the hdd for programs storage and documents (two partitions) one of them keep disappearing for some reason the one I use for programs storage. I'm using Windows 7 64.
Every time I start up normally into Win7 everything is fine for a couple of minutes. I'll open a few programs, then after a few minutes of them running they'll hang and enter the 'not responding' mode. (firefox, steam, IE). If I don't already have task manager running the system will basically be unresponsive and the only thing I can do is reboot manually. If I have task manager running I can sometimes end a process or two but some will remain open & unresponsive. Any programs that are working (including task manager) disappear when I minimize them and no programs appear on the task bar, (though they can be retrieved with alt+tab).
McAfee also has 'real time scanning' permanently disabled.
This is all very strange as there was nothing wrong four days ago when I was away, and the symptoms occured within 2-3 minutes of booting up this evening. The system runs in safe mode.
This may have been reported earlier and has been happening on Vista and XP to some people (albeit not REALLY the same), but I'm seeing my entire programs list in "All Programs" disappear after every installation of any software. It seems adding to the list makes it disappear. The funny thing is that the actual files (shortcuts, etc.) are all in place in their proper folders and don't get removed. It's just the start menu which stops showing them. A way to fix this, for me, is to MOVE the entire contents of
contents) After this, it all comes back, but only until I install something new.
Does anybody have any such or similar problems?
Also, I have a different user account on this computer (for my wife) and none of this happens there, even if I perform an installation from under that account!
I should also say that this window install (currently build 7077) has been upgraded from 7048 (i.e. 7048 -> 7057 -> 7068 - >7077). I have AVG antivirus + firewall installed (the problem happens with it disabled and has started long after AVG's been installed anyway).
This did not happen on any provious builds (and started relatively recently but for the life of me I can't remember when exactly since I don't really use the programs menu that much). The first time it happened I did a restore which brought back the contents but again, until the next install after which it all disappeared again.
It seems to have something to do with the way the start menu finds its contents...
I posted a thread about this problem last week in this thread: Problem installing MyDefrag 4.1.1
Basically the problem is that after installing some programs, the "All Programs" list in the start menu disappears and is just blank. At the time I thought the problem was only with MyDefrag but today I installed the microsoft Intellitype 6.1 software for my keyboard and the same thing happened. Has anyone else had a similar problem.
I have a really weird problem here. Pinning certain apps to the superbar causes them to stop appearing in the 'frequently used programs' list - but only for certain programs; currently I've noticed it with DestroyTwitter (an Adobe Air app) but more puzzlingly, with Winamp and VLC media player.
DestroyTwitter is set to minimize/close to systray and Winamp is docked but not set to appear in the superbar at all - so its icon is always in the systray even while it's technically not 'minimized' but hidden at the top of my screen.
On the other hand, VLC doesn't have any special tray settings. Also, Digsby works fine pinned and in the recent menu, and it's set to close to systray (though it minimizes to taskbar).
I know opening an app from the pinned apps doesn't 'count' towards the use count that the frequently used programs list is based on - but even opening them from their start menu entries doesn't make any difference until I manually unpin the app. The rest of the frequently used programs list works fine.
I can't figure this out. Anyone have any thoughts? (I've tried changing the minimize-to-tray settings, with no difference).

how to handle USB removable media inside camera. With camera there is no "Safely remove hardware and eject media" option. When Photo camera is connected, a new camera device is installed and GUI window is opened with option to browse or copy photos. But there is no removable storage devise eject button on notification area. The USB removable Storage devise is also present on File Manager Computer left panel but again, there is no mouse right button eject option as normally with removable storage devices. I have checked in on several computers. How to understand. I don't believe that it's camera specific but Camera is Canon S95.
Has anyone experienced the syndrome of files and or complete installed programs simply disappearing after a reboot. I have had many instances of that occuring and when I reinstall the missing program, it picks up all the data that was created ( database files, confg, serial, etc) . I see lots of items in GOOGLE,<DISAPEARING FILES IN WINDOWS 7> but surprisingly , none here on Windows 7 Forum.
I was running Windows Vista 32bit on my Dell Inspiron 1545. I then decided to install Windows 7. I installed the 64bit version. Everything seemed ok apart from my CD/ROM drive. It works now and again but will suddenly disappear. I have seen people saying clean it but I dont think this is necessary as it worked a treat on Windows Vista. I tried to burn a disc in Windows Media Player but it says "connect a burner & restart the player". I have tried deleting the filters in the regedit. I have this morning re-installed Windows 7 but instead installed the 32bit version
I'm having trouble with my start menu retaining Pinned items. They Pin/Unpin fine but disappear after restart or shut down. I'm getting nothing to identify what the problem might be
Shortly after a program icon (some, but not all) is placed on my desktop, the face of it disappears and I'm left with a generic Windows icon. It still functions, but there is no face to show what it is.It appears to be a problem on my system install disk, since formatting makes no difference. In fact, I just clean formatted an hour ago and the first program I downloaded was Firefox, and the Firefox desktop icon is already missing its normal appearance.
I am an IT tech in a school and we currently have a problem with mice pointers disappearing on the screen.connected to an interactive whiteboard (not brand specific)left until the screen goes black (10 minutes)while people are working on them (on SIMS)all said work stations are on the domain Update on mouse drivers disable screen dimming after 10 minutes (doesn't go off)updated graphics drivers enable mouse trails and set to minimum Swapping from duplicate to extended or computer only.
Mouse is still visible on the whiteboard projection, but not on the monitor in duplicate mode.It not confined to a type of machine or brand.Over the summer holidays a new image was applied, win7 32bit.
I have recently downloaded 'paint.net' to windows 7 and the icon keeps disappearing. Not necesarily on a restart but just over night or during the day at random. The program is still listed and works and it is on my start menu when I click on the windows icon in the bottom left corner. I have tried refreshing and still can't keep the shortcut on the desktop.
I have several users running Windows 7 enterprise, and every so often their desktop icons disappear, that is the icons they have created (shortcuts, and various MS office files) I have googled this, but the solutions offered never seem to work. They only solution I have found is to disable the UAC, but that is not really a good solution in my opinion. I am running Windows 7 professional and I have some strange happenings as well, although I have never experienced the disappearing icon issue. My issue is mostly with Adobe acrobat. I have acrobat 7.0 professional, updated as far as I can without purchasing a newer verion, and I'll be in the middle of viewing a pdf and I'll get a message that my configuration has changed and I need to re-activate my copy.
I was wondering if any tells solution to dissappearing threads/ half composed emails, in relation to a connection dropout? This has happened to me here a few times and also at another forum I am a member of. Usually with email the half composed mail will be sent to draughts in various emailing facilities, however I was wondering if anyone knows of any third party software or other solution which may be appropriate in alleviating this problem.
Now I didn't know if this was the correct place to post this but I have a strange problem with my desktop icons in Windows 7 RC (build7100). Everytime i reboot the PC my desktop icons disappear, so i right click the desktop and go>view>show desktop icons but its already ticked. If i disable icons and re-enable them they come back but when i reboot they are gone again and sometimes when i close apps
I have been running 6.1 (7600) for some time now, and in the last week or two I have been getting some bizarre behaviour. My desktop has around 50 icons, I have always had lots on my desktop. Over the last 2 weeks, I find 5 of them (always the same 5) disappearing. 1 is to a hard disk, 3 are for DVD drives and another is a game. The devices themselves never disconnect or become unavailable...I know this because I was watching a DVD full screen, and when it finished...the icons had disappeared again (including the drive I was watching).Restarting doesn't cause this to happen. When I replace the icons and reboot, they are still there.
Dell Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E7500 Computer Inspirion 545s 00 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 6GB Memory 750GB Hard Drive The icons that I put on my desktop for 3 of the Games shown on the startup menu will not stay on my desktop. I have done "Create a Shortcut" for Hearts, Freecell, and Spider and they will stay until shutting down. When booting up the next day, they're no longer there. These are the only icons that I have this situation with. The others are fine and do stick around for me, which I'm glad.Is there a trick to getting the games icons to stay put? Is there somewhere I need to change a setting for the icons to be cleaned up like I did in XP?
While in IE my mouse pointer will disappear. I unchecked "hide while typing" and it still disappears. I'll be reading a web page and the pointer disappears, I then have to shake the mouse so I can see where it is. Is this a new "feature" in the latest version of IE. If so, how do I turn it off?
I have 3 drives in my system.Boot Drive2TB WD Black Caviar3TB Hitachi DeskstarThe 2TB will come & go. Sometimes its there, sometimes it's not. I have replaced the HD (it used to be a Hitachi), replaced cables, changed drive letter and even replaced the motherboard to no avail.
Ok I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 and my dvd drive keeps coming and going. The drive is a TSST TS-L633B 12.7 SATA Trayload 8X DVDRW. The pc is a dual core pentium with 3gb ram. When loading a dvd the drive will show up and then shortly disappear. Sometimes it will stay longer but if i pause a dvd it will disappear again and i have to either reboot or open and close the tray to get it to recognize again. I have removed the driver from device manager and i have tried updating the driver with the latest windows 7 drivers from dell with no luck. When i try to flash the drive with the latest the driver it will be there but when opening the flashing program is disappears again. I have even gone the route of getting a replacement drive from dell and it does the same exact thing.I have gone and tried the upperfilters and lowerfilters and that did no change either. I have checked the bios and the drive shows up in the bios.
One of the staff members here is having problems with network shortcut icons disappearing at random. This is what appears to happen, User creates shortcut of network drive and copies it to her desktop. This can be accessed through Office and other programs and the link can be seen on the desktop. After a time the links vanish, even when the machine is on and not rebooted or logged.
Not sure what is going on, but 75% of the time when a user logs into any of our machines that have Windows 7 the ports disappear and they can't print. The spooler is running. If I restart it, it seems to fix it, or reboot sometimes it will fix it. I have been fighting this for over 2 months and can't figure it out. I have loaded the latest drivers I can get for the printers. I also turned off the Print services under Windows features. I adjusted the Print and Point info in gpedit.msc. What else am I missing here? This is causing major issues at my work that people are starting to get frustrated. There has to be a fix for this.
So Lately I been getting this problem where I put my computer to sleep and then turn it back on it loses its sound, its saying there is no driver installed, I have to reboot the system and then go to the bios to turn off the integrated sound and then turn it back on and sometimes after it doesn't even pick it up. Also when I turn it on the driver isn't even red or yellow in the device manager.
I have a folder that that no longer shows any files in explorer. I right click on this folder, click on properties and see that there 171 MB of 59 files in this folder, yet in the explorer view it says there are none. Properties says that these files are not hidden. So how can I see and access my files?
I am on Windows 7, 64 bit> Microsoft Outlook 2010 Last year, I saved a number of files (word, xls, pdf) in a specfic folder. I have done this method for a number of year. In feb 2012, I checked in a file, under last years folder, and all good. However, last week, I went to check on a couple of files, and noticed that the FOLDER icon had a padlock on it. As i have no idea how to put a padlock on. Then an IT man told me to follow the web, regarding unlocking the folder, which I di. To my horror of all horror, every file under that specif folder has disappeared in the blue. My Computer person, has checke d my desktop PC thoroughly, all avenues, including trwling through my hard drive, for the files and also in case it had 'self deleted'. Not a trace anywhere>
These files are extremely important to me> How can I recover (apart from system restore) these files> Is this a WINDOWS 7 issue & how widespeard is this.??> Ni viruses.
now I dont feel happy about saving docs onto my computer. My back-up overwrites each file update each time, so not showing here either!!
So my cursor keeps disappearing ever since i got an update for windows 7. I don't think there is anything wrong with this computer because my laptop is doing the same thing after i updated it. I have went into my mouse settings but nothing has fixed it.
