View 5 RepliesThis may have been reported earlier and has been happening on Vista and XP to some people (albeit not REALLY the same), but I'm seeing my entire programs list in "All Programs" disappear after every installation of any software. It seems adding to the list makes it disappear. The funny thing is that the actual files (shortcuts, etc.) are all in place in their proper folders and don't get removed. It's just the start menu which stops showing them. A way to fix this, for me, is to MOVE the entire contents of
"[startup drive]:Users[username]AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms"
to a different folder and then MOVE it all back (same goes for the
"[startup drive]ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms"
contents) After this, it all comes back, but only until I install something new.
Does anybody have any such or similar problems?
Also, I have a different user account on this computer (for my wife) and none of this happens there, even if I perform an installation from under that account!
I should also say that this window install (currently build 7077) has been upgraded from 7048 (i.e. 7048 -> 7057 -> 7068 - >7077). I have AVG antivirus + firewall installed (the problem happens with it disabled and has started long after AVG's been installed anyway).
This did not happen on any provious builds (and started relatively recently but for the life of me I can't remember when exactly since I don't really use the programs menu that much). The first time it happened I did a restore which brought back the contents but again, until the next install after which it all disappeared again.
It seems to have something to do with the way the start menu finds its contents...
I posted a thread about this problem last week in this thread: Problem installing MyDefrag 4.1.1
Basically the problem is that after installing some programs, the "All Programs" list in the start menu disappears and is just blank. At the time I thought the problem was only with MyDefrag but today I installed the microsoft Intellitype 6.1 software for my keyboard and the same thing happened. Has anyone else had a similar problem.
I found all of a sudden I had lost the function to Right click on a Folder and Select "NEW" Text Document. So I googled it and landed up here and found some .reg files to restore the .txt option in the Context menu and ran it and it worked Till the following day, then it was gone again?? I tried running the .reg again but this time it didn't do anything.I like trying out all sorts of Programs and open source stuff but with the result I end up reloading Windows every 6 months and I have a shed load of stuff on this small business PC of mine and don't really want to do it again for a while. (Yes I have Daily and Weekly Backups on a 3Tb Drive but it's a lot of work to restore it all)

When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire M5811 running Windows 7 - 64 bit. When I tried to start my pc tonight I ended up with just the desktop wallpaper with no icons or start menu.
I tried to reboot in safe mode but the pc became unresponsive. I also tried using the system restore disc but again nothing.
Every time I start up normally into Win7 everything is fine for a couple of minutes. I'll open a few programs, then after a few minutes of them running they'll hang and enter the 'not responding' mode. (firefox, steam, IE). If I don't already have task manager running the system will basically be unresponsive and the only thing I can do is reboot manually. If I have task manager running I can sometimes end a process or two but some will remain open & unresponsive. Any programs that are working (including task manager) disappear when I minimize them and no programs appear on the task bar, (though they can be retrieved with alt+tab).
McAfee also has 'real time scanning' permanently disabled.
This is all very strange as there was nothing wrong four days ago when I was away, and the symptoms occured within 2-3 minutes of booting up this evening. The system runs in safe mode.
I was wondering what could be causing my start menu to look so washed out. It's also too far to the left and down. I've attached a picture of what it looks like.

View 5 Replies View RelatedKeyboard shortcuts are very important to my computer use, which brings up a small but annoying problem I've been having in Windows 7. In XP I was able to place a shortcut to a program or even to a particular file on my Start Menu. If I then renamed the shortcut on the start menu with a unique initial character, I could start a program or access a particular file simply by hitting the Start key and then an initial. For example, for my most common Microsoft Word file, I need only hit Start and then the letter x, and up pops my most commonly used file. In Windows 7 when I try this I am delayed while Windows performs some sort of search for items starting with an x. In a moment or two, it discovers there is only one such item, and it offers me this item in a list and I must hit enter to get the item to come up. The negative effect of this is still more pronounced when I start a new session and I know how want to open say three separate files/applications. In XP I can do this very quickly if the names I gave the shortcuts are unique. (And even if I have multiple items, say starting with the letter m, the Start men lets me essentially choose which m item I want by repeatedly hitting m. Very quickly, I learn that such and such file is: Start>mm>enter.) is there a way to tell the Window 7 Start Menu to behave like the XP Start Menu?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI unfortunately used Perfect Uninstaller to remove SQL Server 2008 R2 and Visual Studio 2010. After reading the forum I know it was a mistake to use this as it probably infected me.I used Avast to locate the viruses on my HD and then removed them with their program. So, then I tried to re install the SQL Server and it installs successfully but when you go to the start menu, then click to expand the folder it says (empty) under the folderI also re installed Visual Studio 2010 which also completed successfully and when you click on that folder in the start menu, there are items there but they are shortcuts that look like documents (have the document icon), and you cant launch Visual Studio.I so do not want to reformat my hard drive for this to work.
I also ran the unhidefolders.exe from this site but it did not correct the problem.
Any one have any ideas how to fix this? These are the only two programs that are like this on my start menu, the others are fine and work correctly.
Since about Window 95 I've been able to right-click on the start menu and 'explore all users'. I use this to then go into the start menu for all users and organize the crap out of it into folders. In Windows 7, it's gone. OK, so I found where the start menu items are stored in: C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms, I can move items around to existing folders with 'administrator permission', I can create a new folder, but not rename it. There error I receive is something to the effect of 'The action can not be completed because the folder or file is open in another location'

It's becoming very annoying.Family safety does have Program protection enabled with specified programs.I'm also running Program control within Windows 7 itself.I think it has something to do with Family safety but I went thru all the options and I couldn't figure anything out. I wonder if Family safety has issues dealing with 2 PCs, but I did notice that in the settings it recognized both computers.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed Windows 7 on my laptop and want to customize the Start Menu's All Programs window. I normally consolidate like programs/folders into one common folder to minimize the number of items on the All Program window (i.e. all Microsoft related items in one folder called something like Microsoft Programs). I can't seem to figure out how to do that in Windows 7.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if anyone else has my problem. When I click on the start menu and then all programs, the list freezes while trying to load, but in actuality one of my dual cores goes to 100%, then the second one maxes out after a few seconds.
To get rid of it, I have to click somewhere on the desktop and try to open something else until it can somehow let the start menu minimize. I tried to search this problem in the forums, but I didn't come across anything. I also hope that this thread could be posted in this topic.
I am using the 7048 Build, downloading the 7057 one thinking it may solve my problem.
