View 0 RepliesRegistry Hacks To Customize Windows 7 & Vista Start Menu & TaskBar Useful links: Ultimate Windows Tweaker - Features PC Tools Registry Guide Back Up, Restore, aintain the Windows 7 & Vista Registry While there are several freeware Windows Tweaking Utilities , like the freeware portable Ultimate Windows Tweaker ,available, there are some who just love to tinker with the Registry. This article is for those such. Most ot these tweaks are applicabe to Windows 7 too. Do remember that it is risky touching the registry and as such do back up the registry and / or create a system restore point first. To customize your start menu options, you have to modify the DWORD value data and set it to either 0 or 1. To modify the value data, you rt click on the name and select modify.
Then in the value data box, you set its numeric valueetting the value of respective DWORD to 1, means that it will have the effect as described in the Value NameSetting the value of respective DWORD to 0, means that it will have the OPPOSITE effect as described in the Value Name.If the DWORD ValueNames do not exist, you will have to create them. To create them, rt click in any blank space in RHS Panel > New >Dword value. The following are some of the recognized DWORDValueNames.NoTrayItemsDisplay : Hides the Task Bar notification areaNoToolbarsOnTaskbar : Do not display any custom toolbars in the taskbar QuickLaunchEnabled : Enable QuickLaunch bar display in the TaskBarNoSimpleStartMenu : Disabling it will force the Classic Start Menu NoStartMenuPinnedList : RemovePinned Programs list from the Start Menu NoStartMenuMorePrograms : Remove All Programs list from the Start menu NoStartMenuMyGanes : Remove Games from Start Menu NoStartMenuMyMusic : Remove Music from Start Menu NoStartMenuNetworkPlaces : Remove Network from Start Menu NoTaskGrouping : Prevent grouping of Task Bar items HideClock : Hides from the Task Bar notification area NoSMBalloonTip : Remove Balloon Tips on Start Menu items NoAutoTrayNotify : Turn off Task Bar area cleanup notification LockTaskbar : Lock the Taskbar and prevents the User from moving or resizing it NoSearchCommInStartMenu : If enabled Start Menu search will not search for Communications. NoSearchProgramsInStartMenu : If enabled Start Menu search will not search for Programs. NoSearchInternetInStartMenu : If enabled Start Menu search will not search for Internet History NoSearchFilesInStartMenu : If enabled Start Menu search will not search for Files This list is not exhaustive. You can simply study the registry key's DWORD's, illustrated above and see that there would be many more such tweaks or hacks available. The ValueNames are roughly indicative of what they would do.
Take the example of NoRun. Its value is set at 0. If you open Taskbar & Start Menu Properties > Star Menu Tab > Start Menu > Customize. You will see a checkbox to Add Run command to the Start Menu. But if you now go back to regedit, and change the DWORD of NoRun to 1, and now go back to the Start Menu properties box, you will see that the item to Add Run itself will be missing ! So, enabling or disabling such options through Vista Registry, will allow or prohibits users, from executing such actions through the Properties box. Incidentally, there used to be a Registry Restriction Tool from Microsoft, which went on to become a part of the Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit which went on to become Windows SteadyState. You may find SteadyState of interest. If you are interested in such Registry Hacks you may find this Registry Guide for Windows of immense interest. It provides an extensive range of registry tweaks, tricks & hacks for optimizing, enhancing and securing the Windows operating systems including Vista.

View 0 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to find the way to customize the Menu Bar, the one right above the Command bar. When I right-click on it, it gives me only the "lock the toolbar" option. It has the usual suspect buttons now, "File, "Edit", "View" etc, but I want to add Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete etc.

Here's what I want to do: I probably type my email address 50 times a day (kind of long address) to log in to email, online shopping log in, forums, etc. Is there any way to simply click in the box where it wants my email address and do a right click (or something quick like that) and be able to create a selection list with email addresses or login names and I simlply just click on it to fill in the email address/login field? It doesn't have to be exactly that method, I'm just looking for some way to keep my email address on a permanant clipboard so I can just select it or do a keyboard shortcut to fill in email address fieldAnyone have any ideas? Seems like a fairly simple request so I have to believe there is someway to do this.

When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.

View 5 Replies View RelatedKeyboard shortcuts are very important to my computer use, which brings up a small but annoying problem I've been having in Windows 7. In XP I was able to place a shortcut to a program or even to a particular file on my Start Menu. If I then renamed the shortcut on the start menu with a unique initial character, I could start a program or access a particular file simply by hitting the Start key and then an initial. For example, for my most common Microsoft Word file, I need only hit Start and then the letter x, and up pops my most commonly used file. In Windows 7 when I try this I am delayed while Windows performs some sort of search for items starting with an x. In a moment or two, it discovers there is only one such item, and it offers me this item in a list and I must hit enter to get the item to come up. The negative effect of this is still more pronounced when I start a new session and I know how want to open say three separate files/applications. In XP I can do this very quickly if the names I gave the shortcuts are unique. (And even if I have multiple items, say starting with the letter m, the Start men lets me essentially choose which m item I want by repeatedly hitting m. Very quickly, I learn that such and such file is: Start>mm>enter.) is there a way to tell the Window 7 Start Menu to behave like the XP Start Menu?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was recently the victim of the dreaded windows recovery virus. That was fine I have removed the virus from the box no problems, However it managed to corrupt the Start Menu. The Start menu contents is gone never to be seen again, I have checked every where. View 6 Replies View RelatedI unfortunately used Perfect Uninstaller to remove SQL Server 2008 R2 and Visual Studio 2010. After reading the forum I know it was a mistake to use this as it probably infected me.I used Avast to locate the viruses on my HD and then removed them with their program. So, then I tried to re install the SQL Server and it installs successfully but when you go to the start menu, then click to expand the folder it says (empty) under the folderI also re installed Visual Studio 2010 which also completed successfully and when you click on that folder in the start menu, there are items there but they are shortcuts that look like documents (have the document icon), and you cant launch Visual Studio.I so do not want to reformat my hard drive for this to work.
I also ran the unhidefolders.exe from this site but it did not correct the problem.
Any one have any ideas how to fix this? These are the only two programs that are like this on my start menu, the others are fine and work correctly.
Since about Window 95 I've been able to right-click on the start menu and 'explore all users'. I use this to then go into the start menu for all users and organize the crap out of it into folders. In Windows 7, it's gone. OK, so I found where the start menu items are stored in: C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms, I can move items around to existing folders with 'administrator permission', I can create a new folder, but not rename it. There error I receive is something to the effect of 'The action can not be completed because the folder or file is open in another location'
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter new Windows 7 installation I installed Family Safety Live on 2 of my computers (I have a 3 pack Windows 7 Home).Every since installing Family Safety, when I click on Start menu it stays up for 2 seconds and disappears, which disables me (Admin) and all users from being able to use it all together. It's becoming very annoying.Family safety does have Program protection enabled with specified programs.I'm also running Program control within Windows 7 itself.I think it has something to do with Family safety but I went thru all the options and I couldn't figure anything out. I wonder if Family safety has issues dealing with 2 PCs, but I did notice that in the settings it recognized both computers.
