I'm looking for help in building a new Windows 7 HTPC. What components are you using? All I would like to do with mine is be able to use MCE and record HD, playback movies, maybe bluray (I own a stand alone for that)...No games just home theater.

I am going to build a complete new system. Can I install windows 7 64bit from the same windows 7 disc? Or do I have to buy a new windows 7 disc? Is there a way around buying a whole new disc?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently replaced my Win7 (7100) x32 with the x64 version in order to make use of more memory (not yet installed). However, although the rig I'm using had no problems in x32, it keeps BSODing in x64. Are there any commonly known reasons for BSODs in x64 when not in x32?
I have all drivers installed, updated and seemingly working. I get a BSOD within about 20 mins of booting usually. No temp issues with CPU - all under 30 idle and BSOD isn't necessarily when the CPU is stressed.

I'm looking for a soundcard driver for my older Audigy SB 1394, using Win 7 Build 7100. I was able to get the sound working using Build 7000, but have been unsuccessful with the latest Win 7 Beta.
I think I've tried five or six drivers, and none have worked.
It doesn't appear that Win 7 is even recognizing that I have a soundcard, which could be the real problem. I tried moving the card to a different slot and running a hardware search, but nothing has worked.
I need thinkpad T60 bluetooth driver in Windows 7 build 7000 (the auto update one via windows update, not the levono website vista driver).

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have built a computer almost exactly to the one that they had built for Jeff on Tested.com. Everything seemed to install fine and run smoothly. Recently, I have been getting BSODs and they seem to be somewhat random. Usually when I am watching movies/streaming online/listening to music in Zune or iTunes. I don't really understand why this is happening. I have been looking around the internet and many people say that memory could be the problem but I have tested it with the windows memory test tool, all results have come back with no errors. I for some reason cannot Memtest to run.

AMD was suggested to me and it sounds good but I have no source of information except from you folks.Could you help me find an inexpensive motherboard for this CPU? On board audio and video would be ideal and USB 3.0 and maximum of 8Gb of memory is a must. What confuses me is that the CPU calls itself AM3 but when I do a search I only find AM3+. View 7 Replies View RelatedI just built a new computer for my inlaws and had several BSODs with different bccodes (1, 1a, a). I formatted and reinstalled the OS, updates, as well as clean installs of all recent drivers downloaded from the manufacturer websites. I have had several BSODs after this and I am worried that it may be related to the memory I have installed.
I ran a full disk scan, as well as SeaTools short and long tests. These were all passed with no errors. Also, I have updated the bios to the most recent, reseated ram, unplugged/replugged all sata and power cables inside. Specs are as follows:
Windows 7 Home Premium x64
CPU: AMD Phenom II 555 3.2Ghz Quad Core
Motherboard: Asus M4A785-M onboard sound, video, wired lan
Memory: G.Skill 4GB DDR2-800 (2x2gb) F2-6400CL5D-4GBNT
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 320gb SATA2
I just put together my new computer and I started getting a few different BSOD's. The mostrecent was a Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area. A memory management one happened yesterday also. I'll include the dump files so someone can check them out

i went to the specified folder and the file opens OK from there.
also it's associated properly in the default programs control panel.
i must mention the i upgraded to this build from build 7000.
I was told that I need to have my event log cleaned up (those that show crtiical error more than anything else) so that it would not fill up and cause a computer crash? I have never heard this before for a home computer.

After that I would do a fresh install of window's 7 go into your BIOS select you dvd drive as first boot choice save and exit .put the cd in the drive and restart your pc don't forget to press enter !

I realize that October is fast approaching for the RTM but I plan to keep running the Beta for a couple of months past the Grand Opening.
Is it possible that all the updates that I have received equally add up to the newer build?
Should I install Windows 7? If so, which build, and does it have any bootable ISOs? I would preferably like to install something that I won't have to replace with a newer build later, but I see that probably won't be possible unless we get an official update on the RTM soon.

View 5 Replies View RelatedLenovo 3000 N100 laptop with Vista on it had all sorts of issues. I cleaned them all up, but couldn't stop it from hanging. Seemingly random. Complete and permanent freeze requiring 10 seconds on the power button to restart.
Eventually decided to move to Win 7 RC. Formatted hard disk completely (with BootIt NG) before installing. Still having the same problem.
Memtest86 reports no issues (after 47 hours).
Chkdsk no errors.
sfc.exe no errors.
Hitachi dtf no errors (although it's a Toshiba drive).
All the regular spyware, adware, malware programs - no issues.
Interestingly, the problem doesn't seem to occur in Safe mode or when performing chkdsk, installing Windows, or anything else outside the main windows environment. This leads me to believe it's not hardware, but some system/software element common to both Vista and Windows 7?
I'm using a Lenovo 3000 N100. 1.73GHz, 1gig ram, 32 bit Win 7, version 6.1, build 7100.
Also, I'm currently trying to run a Windows Update from within Safe Mode With Networking, but it's not working. Should it be?
Having troubles setting this up.
Windows 7 computer working fine - printer working fine (it's a canon ip5200). On Windows XP machine (SP3), I am trying to access the printer. I've tried this a couple of ways and it fails every time.
1) Drill down to printer via the Add Printer searchj for a network printer action. This eventually will ask me to point to an INF file that I don't have (unpacking Canon's printer driver installer to get to the 'ip5200.inf' file will eventually get me a 'Invalid printer file' error even though I can see that the inf file looks like an inf file.
2) Try to add it as a local printer, pointing to the network path (etworkprinter). That installs OK, but it doesn't work.
3) Try to install a network printer giving it a network path. See #1.
What in the heck am I doing wrong? I cannot get Windows7 to add the Windows XP drivers to it's list so I can install it via the network.
First off, I apologize if this has been asked. I tried searching, but didn't find anything that I was looking for.
I installed Windows 7 64bit onto my computer yesterday which was running Vista 64bit. Everything seemed to have worked okay, until about 10 minutes later, the computer shuts off as if it loses power. When I went to turn it back on, the fan is extremely loud and it sounds like one long beep and two fast after it.
There is also no signal on the monitor and nothing shows up. I have made sure many times the wires are plugged in. I tried flipping the power switch on the back of the computer as well, and that still failed to work.
If it helps, I own a custom built computer. But I know nothing about computers, so please try to explain as though you were talking to a five year old.

My laptop has INTERNET access from the wireless card to the router attached to the desktop, but I can't get the laptop to "recognize" the desktop computer. When I type in computer name, it tells me that it can't locate that computer.
So I can't print from my laptop, because the printer is attached to the desktop. I've tried everything I can think of -- renaming networks, etc. -- nothing has worked. The weird thing is that the laptop could find the printer last week, and I don't remember changing anything. Advice???

I sucessfully upgraded from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32
Then I upgraded my hard disk (140Gb 500GB) and RAM (3GB to to 4GB)
Now I would like to go from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit
When I try and run the Windows 7-P-retail-en-us.x64.exe file it upacks the box then stops with this error:"We are unable to create or save files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write flies and that that folder is not read only".
I am the System Admin and I have full rights, and have moved the exe and the setup box files to My Documentsand I have modified the directory properties/attributes but I still get the same error over and over.
I searched the posts and some people stated one needs a clean install others say you can upgrade from any version so I am trying the upgrade here especially since the upgrade from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32 was smooth and did require all the extra work of a reinstall.
out I have tried the (cmd) method all to no avail is telling me that "is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file"
