Networking - Where Is The Password On Vista ?
Jun 18, 2009
I do try to network my files over a wifi connection but can't access to all of them...
PC1 Vista: Sees all the others
PC2 XP home: Sees the same
PC3 Win 7229: Sees the same
1) I can't find where is the password on Vista!!
2)Vista won't accept my user-name and password for Win 7
Vista won't access to XP Home
3) Xp won't accept my user-name and password for Win 7
First can someone indicate the way to find the damn password on vista, please!
I can see all the computers and their nicknames through the network on the three on them...but nothing work even with WMP who sees the others WMP shared on the three computers.

So I want to network my OLD Vista laptop and my NEW 7 desktop. Both are named Chase-PC. I open Networks (on the desktop) and open Chase-PC and it opens my desktop files, not the laptop. If I go to my mothers vista it opens my vista laptop..

I've been wondering if it's at all possible to network 2 machines, 1 running Windows 7 (build 7057) and the other, Vista??
Also, is it possible to create a network connection over long distance??
E.g. We live a few miles from my girlfriend's Mum & would like to network ours & her laptop if it's possible.

Can someone please help me or point me to a guide on how to enable/share a printer between a Windows 7 RC and a vista system?
I have a HP printer connected to my Windows 7 RC x64 system and it prints from my computer just fine. I pulled up the settings and told it I wanted to share the printer as "Win7HP" to make the name easy. Anyway when I went down to my roomates computer I didn't see the printer and if I try to click my computer name under his network window I get a pop up asking for a user name and a PW. What am I doing wrong? I would hate to have to install another partition of Vista x64 just so he can print using my printer.
When we had things set up before he never had to "log in" from his computer to access my printer.

I have an external Toshiba cable modem -USB - attached to my computer for Internet access and I am using the Windows 7 Ultimate OS. I then have a Vista Ultimate 64 bit machine connected to a Wired Router. The Vista Machine can access the Windows 7 machine through this network but not the internet. In the Windows 7 Network dialog box it shows the External modem as a Home Network but it shows the Vista machine's ethernet card as a Public Network and it will not let me change this setting at all.

The problem I have is that none of my computers can access either of the Windows 7 computers. The Windows 7 computers can access the Vista and WinXP computers, but not the 2nd Windows 7 computer (asks for a user and password).
When trying to access the Windows 7 computers all ask for a user and password, I had set the Windows 7 computer to be open access for networking, but this does not seem to of happened (I've done something wrong).
I had installed Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on my XP machine as advised but I got an error message saying I had a newer update so this was not installed.
I am now at a total loss as to where to go now, I have done heaps of google searches and these tried to help but still did not slove my problem. (I'm not computer dumb, so do understand 90% of what is required).
I have the following setup.
2x Windows 7 RC systems, hardwired.
2x WinXP-Pro systems, hardwired
1x WinXP-Pro Laptop, wireless
1x Vista Laptop, wireless.
No home server installed.

Windows 7 desktop (computer A) *Home Premium
Vista desktop (computer B)
Need step by step outlined / understanding how to get windows 7 to not only see but connect to Vista desktop.
note1: both computers are on same work-group (MSHOME).
note2: attempted from either station to connect A -> B or B -> A and was
unsuccessful each time (access denied).
There appears to be some permission issues preventing this from working. I need to understand how to be at root (top) level to allow for steps you outline to work.
**Please don't spare any details in describing how this can work.

7 put up a network wizard as soon as I started the machine and I answered questions as best I could. I had trouble renaming the work-group but think I've done that ok and was connected to the Internet immediately, but wouldn't argue if you told me I had created a problem somewhere along here.
Our setup is:
Desktop running XP, which is connected to the wireless router by cable
Laptop running Vista
Laptop running 7
The problem is mainly on the (new) 7 laptop. When I go to network, only the Vista laptop appears above the line (not even the 7 laptop itself!) and below the line are media devices with the name of the 7 laptop and the name of the XP desktop.
When viewing the network map I see the 7 laptop connected by solid lines to a large question mark named "Unknown", which is in turn connected by solid lines to the router, which is connected by solid lines to the Internet. The Vista laptop is connected by broken lines to the router.
The XP desktop has no trouble seeing both laptops and the Vista laptop has no trouble seeing the 7 laptop and the XP desktop. The problem is only with the 7 laptop not being able to see the XP desktop.

I just bought a laptop with Win 7 Home Prem 64 bit installed that is wirelessly connected to my router. I have another desktop with Vista Home Prem 64 bit wired connected to the router. I was trying to set up home network from my laptop and it gave me a password. After that I could see my desktop in my laptop under Network but whenever I click on the desktop, a popup asks for user name and password.
The password that my laptop provided doesn't connect to the desktop saying "wrong pass". I can also see my laptop from my desktop but can't communicate. Both the comps are running under Administrator accounts and doesn't require any login/pass to log into them. Please note that I don't have any problem with accessing the internet. I would appreciate it very much if someone could tell me how I could set up a home network between the two to be able to share files.

I landed here because of a weird issue with my recent upgrade. Once my vista to 7 upgrade was complete I was brought to the user account log on page. One problem. The only account listed is one called "other user" that I never created on vista or 7. Further more it's requiring a user name and password. I had two accounts on vista that don't even exist on 7. I never had a password to any account. I now have a fresh copy of 7 that I can't log on to. Any thoughts?

Sitting here in class and our professor was telling us admin it disabled by default in Vista/Windows 7 now for security reasons. I mentioned you can access it from a command prompt based program that comes in a bootable iso format you burn on disc.
I can not for the life of me remember what the name of that program was but a couple years ago I was working on a Win Vista system that got a virus that locked out the user by changing the user account passwords.
We Googled, found this program you burn on a CD and it brings up a menu that will allow you to reset the user account password, or log into the admin account.

My system dual boots to either Windows 7 or Vista Ultimate, or, at least it is supposed to. Something happened and now the system just boots to Winodows 7 without giving me the choice to boot to either. When I use F6 I find that only Windows 7 is listed in the Operating Systems box.

New laptop has Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I have two business programs that won't run on a 64bit system. Partitioned the hard drive to install Vista Home Premium 32bit to create a dual boot system solely to run these two programs. Can't get Vista to load. Followed tutorial meticulously. All goes fine until the "Vista will boot for the first time" step. After this first boot, the screen returns to the "completing installation" page. However, the process dies here and the progress bar across the bottom of the screen never moves, even after an hour. Reformatted the partition and started over with same results. Multiple attempts always die after the first boot.

I have two drives (C and D) with Vista on one and Win 7 on the other (not sure if they're actual drives or partitions of a single drive, how do I tell?). I am dual booting and never use Vista. Starting to need the disk space and want to delete Vista. Is this difficult in this scenario?

I had recently installed windows 7 on my laptop running windows vista. I did not remove the existing windows vista installation, and thus win 7 was installed in a dual boot combination. Now, i want to remove vista from my laptop and use windows 7 only. The problem is that during installation, win 7 was installed on logical drive and windows vista was on the primary drive. Thus, i cannot delete/format the windows vista partition. Also I cannot transfer the boot drive to the partition containing win 7 because the vista partition is the active one.

I have a legitimate copy of Windows Vista with key codes etc and I have a legitimate upgrade disk for Windows 7. I had Windows 7 installed on a previous system build which had a HD crash and now I am starting again from scratch (wiyh backed up data).
Like a dolt, I installed Wondows 7 before I remembered it was an upgrade edition. I've looked all over the MS site and don't see a method I can use to Activate Windows 7 from this point. way to use my legitimate Windows disks and keys without having to wipe the drive, install Vista and then install Windows 7 yet again.
It's aggravating to have legitimate software and not be able to use it without needing to trick the system - surely there is a way to not have to start all over?

I set up my 7 machine on an XP network. The 7 machine sees the shared folders, and I can get to them with no problem. When I try to look at the 7 machine from the XP side, it asks for a user name and password. I never set one up, because I would like to run an open network. (I live a mile down a limerock road with no close neighbors.) Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Why in the world did Microsoft change the default network name?

I have a new PC running Windows 7 RC, but I can't get it to find the shared folders on my Macs, nor can my Macs see the shared folders on the PC. Any ideas how to get at least one way working?
I'm running 10.5.7 on the Mac, and if I "Connect to Server" and dial in smb:// and the PCs IP address, I get a login window, but it won't let me log in. It says I have incorrect user name or password. But I have no password on the PC.
Also, I followed the advice in another post, Accessing Mac and windows 7 on same network - Mac Forums), but it didn't make any difference.

Right. First off i admit to not knowing a lot about networks but im sure this isnt right. I have a wired network at home and on it i have a Popcornhour media streamer.
With XP as soon as the OS has loaded i can go to the Network browser on the PCH and it sees my work group and the PC and i can access my shared folders. Same thing the other way around. If the PCH needs a re boot its all up and running agin within a min or so.
With Windows 7 7068 i have to wait anything up to half hour before my PCH can see my work group.
Same router, static IP addresses and DHCP server turned off.
Any ideas guys?

I recently suffered a trojan virus attach and ultimately have changed my password on my email server.I have tried to reset it to the new password in Windows mail multiple times. It keeps reverting to the old password as the saved password, and I continually have to retype in the new password. I tried resetting the password to nothing, and rebooting, and the old password comes back again. There must be a preference file or an ini file that I can edit. Can I do that without loosing my address book, etc.?

They have a peer to per network, formerly with two windows XP computers. On the main computer, they have their main accounting program, which runs on a DOS version of Lotus Works. It's old, but she knows it so well, and it does everything they need. She recently upgraded her main computer to Windows 7, and was able to get Lotus Works running, and, with the LW folder shared, they can actually open Lotus Works from a second computer (running Windows XP) just fine. There is no local copy of Lotus Works on the Windows XP computer, it simply starts the program from a shortcut targeting the LW.exe file as mapped. This has worked fine for quite a while.Over the weekend, they wanted to upgrade the Windows XP computer to Windows 7, (replacing it with a new computer) I was able to set up their peer to peer network, mapped the second Windows 7 computer to the LW share and tried to make a shortcut to the LW.exe file. (both computers are now running Windows 7 Pro, 64bit version) I realize I'm going to have to change compatabilty mode, but the problem is getting a working shortcut on the desktop. UAC is off on the second computer, but I get the following message when trying to make a shortcut.:"Windows cannot create the shortcut check to see if the disk is full" The machine where I need the shortcut is running AVG 2012 Free edition and Windows Security Essentials. What would be preventing me from being able to create a shortcut?

I have three PC's all on Windows 7 running on a home network. I have a good PC which has been replaced, which I would like to put on the network with four hard drives, I would like to backup the data from each PC onto its own HD in the PC.
I have looked at several programs to effect a real time backup system but need some advice at to which to use. (preferably a freeby as being retired money is short) If possible I would like to be able to restore each program data seperately if required, rather than have to restore all the backed up data to a certain PC as one file. Any help gratefully rec'd.
