Moving Programs Out Of The Windows.old File?

May 31, 2011

I just installed Windows 7 Starter on my laptop (I had Windows Vista) and I am wondering how I cam move programs from the Windows.old folder to the actual laptop? I know I can move personal files, but I don't know how to move the actual programs.
If I can't then, I have Windows Office 2007 installed on, so when I go to install Windows Office again will I be able to use the same serial key as before or will I have to get a new serial key?

Moving DLL File Require Permission To Make Changes?

Aug 26, 2011

I am trying to move a .dll file from one of my folders in Downloads to Program Files (x86)/some_folder, but it keeps showing "you require permission from my_machine/Owner to make changes to this file", so I can't finish the job; I tried take owner ship of the dll file, but it didn't work.

Here is what I tried: First of all, I changed the own ship of the .dll file located in Download folder to my_machine/Owner(full control), and then i changed the own ship of program files(x86)/destination folder to my_machine/Owner(full control) as well; then tried to move the dll file to the destination, failed. Then I turned off the UAC, tried but failed again. The error msg is still "you require permission from my_machine/Owner to make changes to this file".

Windows Does Not Remember Programs Used To Open A File

Sep 7, 2009

I have some .mkv files on my system.

Windows 7 does not seem to remember the programs that I used to open those files with.

I keep getting the default open with menu option without any available programs and then select a default program.

Even if open the file with WMP64, Winamp, BSplayer or Media Player Classic, those programs do not appear in the open with context menu, and I cant quickly open the file with those programs.

Is there something wrong which I can fix?

List Of Associated Programs For File Type

Aug 30, 2010

On XP there is a facility to add programs to a file type - you can add more than one program, and each one has a name (which appears in the pulldown list), and a program location, which can have options added to it, e.g. an html file could have a browse function, and an edit function (I want to use SeaMonkey with a -compose option, assuming I can do this). I don't want to have to pick one program as the default unless the other one is easily accessible. I'm sure Windows 7 wouldn't kill a very useful XP facility... would they?!

Some Programs Unresponsive After Certain File Operations?

Aug 5, 2011

have following problem. I started to notice a long unresponsiveness or even complete freeze of some applications after performing certain file operations. These are the issues:

- In Torrent if I delete a task only, it continues operation instantly. If I delete task+associated torrent file, it becomes unresponsive for unusual period (mostly 30-60sec.). If I delete task+torrent file+torrent contents, it even freezes completely (didnot confirm if it only is a too long delay or complete freeze but after about 5 min I have given up and killed the application)

- In Corel PhotoPaint if I save a large image to disk, after confirming the filter settings the application becomes unresponsive for about 30-60 sec. and during this period I get continuous system dialogs about application not being ready, Switch To.../Retry/Cancel.

- In Win Explorer if I delete file, it becomes quite long before the confirmation dialog appears and it also takes quite a long the deleting operation self. This doesnot happen always.

I thing all issues are related, not seen these delays on other applications yet. How do I locate the culprit and fix the problem? I didnot have these delays earlier.

Change USER And Programs File Location?

Aug 21, 2010

I performed a successful clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I installed the OS to a 100gb volume with the intention of using that only for the OS. I, without thinking, allowed the setup to name that drive C. Further, without noticing I allowed the Programs folder and the Users folder to go into this volume. I intended for everything but the OS to go into a large second file named E. My thinking is that the only way that I can fix this situation is to do a new clean install and get it right this time (as much as my limited knowledge will allow. how to rectify this. ntel e6600 Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz Noctua NH-U12P CoolerASUS P5QOCZ Reaper 2X2GB DDR2 800 (PC 6400) EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640 MB WD 250GB GB SATA II Corsair CMPSU 550W

How To Code A Bat File To Restart Explorer And 2 Programs

May 22, 2012

hat am I doing wrong? The code stops after explorer.exe is restarted. I know this because the command prompt does not show the echo "-explorer restarted". When I look at the command prompt, the cursor seems to be on the next line, but without the normal C:UsersJohnSmith> in front of it (there is nothing in front of the cursor).
Also, if I include the command "exit" at the end of my .bat file, it doesn't seem to work. Even though if I type in exit into command prompt, the window closes.

Ensure That All The Short Cuts For The Programs And Data For The User File Will Run Smoothly On The Fresh Install?

Jan 17, 2012

I'm reinstalling Windows 7 onto my 32GB OCZ SSD boot drive. In addition to that drive, I have a 1TB media drive and a 1TB drive that holds my user files as well as all my programs. I can't seem to figure out how to ensure that all the short cuts for the programs and data for the user file will run smoothly on the fresh install. Is there anything I should do before nuking the SSD and anything additional that I should do after the install or just treat it like a fresh SSD/HDD install but use the already existing user data? tl/dr: Reinstall windows on boot drive (SSD) and retain users folder/program files on separate HDD? edit: creating a clone image and using that won't work here, the actual OS files are bad

Moving Windows 7 Files

Sep 18, 2011

I had to do a reinstall of a Win 7 32bit pro OS for a user, but before I did, I moved her data to my machine, did the reinstall on her and then moved her data to her profile.

I logged in as her, and verified that her "my docs" and favorites were there and that I can access them. However, all of the data icons are transparent (folders on her desktop and the actual data in her mydocs).

Most of it is pictures and movies and I can access them, but everything is clear. I did notice that even the favorites are transparent and they do not show in the browser (IE) even though the link is in fact in the Favorites directory in her profile.

Windows 7 Won't Hibernating After Moving To SSD?

Aug 14, 2011

I moved Windows 7 from a partition on a physical hard drive to a new SSD. It was pretty easy, and everything works great except the hibernate function. The screen goes blank for about two seconds and then comes back on. Nothing power-related appears in the Event Viewer. The PC restarts, shuts down, and even sleeps with no trouble. I ran powercfg -h off and then powercfg -h on to delete and recreate the hibernation file,no offense, but no lectures about how a "clean" reinstall is required or even recommended when moving to an SSD. That's just not true. Similar to upgrading to a larger physical hard drive, all you do is copy the partition to the new drive and continue on your way.

Moving Windows 7 Ent OS Drive To Another PC?

I'm avoiding reinstall since I really want to preserve my settings.
